#8 of Fire Branded Leather

Will has enough in his life to be happy. A stable job as assistant fire chief, good friends, and enough money to keep his food bowl full. What more could a dog ask for? Expect perhaps someone warm on those cold Vancouver nights.

It all came from an ad in the newspaper, "Are you willing?" He was.

Fires are breaking out all over the city and Will is run ragged. His days are soot stained as he fights to keep the city from burning to the ground and his nights reek of sweat and blood as he learns the ways of a new passion.

The flames burn higher as Will discovers there is more to this life then being a dutiful mutt who follows the orders of his superiors.

And then she places a collar on him.

Chapter 8: The Cracks Begin to Show

When next Will opened his eyes sunlight was streaming through the window. He looked over to his alarm clock.

A split-second of horror ran down his spine when he realized he'd never set it.

Then came the ice cold comfort of knowing he had no reason to.

Laying on his back, Will looked up at the whitewashed ceiling of his condo. It was neat, clean, and almost completely devoid of soul. He wondered what Anne's home looked like...

An idle finger slid up to brush against his collar. Will smiled.

An hour later he finally slid from bed to take a morning shower. He was loath to remove his collar to get clean, but it would do him no good to get water trapped under it.

A quick glance in the mirror, Will saw the same dalmatian that looked back at him every day, gut and all. But there was something new...

Pausing, Will ran his hands down his chest, cupping them under his belly.

"You only wish you could look this good..." he whispered.

For the first in a long, long, time, Will believed the words.

He looked good enough to catch the eye of the only woman in the city who mattered.

Will's lips rose in a grin that quickly turned into something more. You only wish you could look this good...

He stepped into the shower, whistling a happy tune.

Another hour and Will was clean, his coat brushed. He was in the middle of his morning exercises when there was a knock on the door.

He cocked his head. It didn't sound like a solicitor.

The knock was soft and timid, almost as if they hoped he wouldn't be here.

Stifling a growl, Will let his weights drop to the floor with a heavy thunk. Wiping the sweat from his forehead with a towel, he walked to the door.

"What?" he had to fight to keep his voice civil.
