Honor Above All Else
#8 of The Great Balancing
Soaring through a blue gaseous nebula, dotted with distant stars, the saucer shaped forward section of the Whiterunner followed by the rectangular aft sections connecting the cylinder like engine nacelles.
Kitt, the dark blue gray wolf sat in the command chair in the center of the circular bridge, his crew spread out at their respective stations.
"Sir, all systems report green. We should reach TacPoint in about fourteen hours." Samuel the pure white furred mouse helmsman reported from the forward panel just in front of the four meter wide view screen.
Kitt adjusted himself in the chair, tapping his fingers anxiously on the keypad connected to the arm of the chair. "Good... Goddamn I wish they could put hyperspace buoys in the area. I don't like long trips."
"Yeah no kidding Captain." Samuel responded with a chuckle.
"Mind holding down the fort while I grab a coffee?" Kitt asked.
"Sure thing Cap'n."
Kitt sauntered down the gray paneled hallways, quite boring too look at; when he passed the gym and peered in seeing his dirty white lupine mate exchanging sparring blows with the large purple Black Panther tactical officer.
Drek the panther, near seven feet tall and built like a brick house but nowhere near slowed by the muscles tried desperately to land a hard blow on the smaller toned wolf as he dodged and blocked. Eventually Alec got a hold of Drek's arm, flipping him gracefully into the air and then crashing down to the mat.
Kitt laughed out loud. "He's still too fast for ya, eh Drek?"
The defeated panther looked towards his captain and growled. "Alec just got lucky..."
Alec smirked. "Thought the feline consortium trained their people better?"
Drek stood, brushing off his pants and shirt. "They do but they never anticipated us fighting decedents of magical legends."
Alec snickered "Please, Kitt's the ascended Lupine, I was just trained better, speaking of you hon, aren't you supposed to be on the bridge with Sam?" he said grabbing a towel from the bench along the side of the mat.
"Yeah, I was just going to grab some coffee." Kitt said.
Alec turned and leapt into Kitts arms, kissing him on the muzzle. "I figured you'd get antsy, you always do when we have these long trips."
Drek sighed and padded towards the exit. "I'll go up there and make sure Sam doesn't fly up into a black hole or something, you two have fun heh."
Alone in the gym, Alec and Kitt passionately locked muzzles, Alec's paws running through Kitt's long auburn hair.
Alec began unbuttoning Kitt's gray shirt when the intercom chimed. "Kitt, Alec, please report to the bridge we're receiving a distress call." Sam's voice urgently said.
Both of the wolves growled a bit, Kitt let Alec out of his arms and they both charged their way to the bridge.
"Sorry to interrupt sirs, but this just came up." Sam tapped a few buttons on his control panel projecting a crackling transmission over the bridge speakers.
"We are under attack! Any alliance vessels....please....help....they're killing us..." the message repeated over and over.
Kitt took his seat in the command chair, pressing the intercom button. "All staff to duty stations."
A few moments passed when the tall, silver furred Goth looking fox communications officer stepped out onto the bridge, in her black torn dress pants and tank top embroidered with a flaming skull. "Shar, we received a distress call about 5 minutes ago, get a lock on its position." Kitt commanded, instantaneously sending the fox into work, placing a headset into her big sensitive ears.
"Tracking Kitt..." Shar's paws danced over her keyboard taking the well experienced fox only moments to find out where it was coming from. "Got it...it's a civilian research outpost called Daven IV on the border of Hyena and Leone space, only two light years away."
Kitt looked to Alec, only getting a slight nod as a reply. Kitt swiveled his chair around to Sam. "Set a course maximum burn, Drek, charge shields and weapons."
The Whiterunner's engines roared as it flew towards the green speckled world of Daven IV. "Planet profile captain, Class M, breathable atmosphere, dense forest. The main research facility is located along the equator. No life signs as of yet sir. The registry says that there's a compliment of five thousand scientists, laborers and other civilian, virtually no defense except a small garrison of Alliance volunteers." Alec reported from one of the computer consoles along the back of the bridge.
"What were they researching?" Kitt asked.
"Says it studied genetic manipulation for agriculture"
"Alright, helm, set a standard orbit over the main complex. Drek, Shar, Andre, report to the shuttle bay for dust off, heavy arms." Kitt ordered standing from the command chair. "Alec keep your eyes peeled."
"Kitt, do you sense anything?" Alec inquired.
"Dunno, it feels weird down there, but the system is clear."
On the surface Kitt and his landing party moved through the masses of scaffolding towards the large complex of offices and labs, it was quiet, dead quiet other than the crackling of fires and the wind through the trees. The entire area riddled with craters and blast holes, bodies strung about everywhere. Kitt took the lead followed by his chief engineer an averaged height human, rusty blonde hair, dressed in a brown leather bomber jacket and blue jeans. Drek and Shar followed up the rear with heavy caliber assault weapons in paw.
"What's it like down there?" Alec asked from the bridge of the Whiterunner.
"Dead hon. Look's like it was one hell of a slaughter too." Kitt spoke into his microphone headset.
The landing party moved quickly through the vast network of steel walk ways leading up to their objective, a huge fifteen story central building covered in gold tinted windows. They approached the main security doors seeing the eight meter tall thick steel blast doors blown clean off its hinges. Inside it was like outside, dotted in bullet holes and hallows from explosions lined the concrete walls. In the main computer room several security agents lie dead on their panels, bullet holes straight through their heads. Andre quickly moved one of them from his seat and went to work bringing the main computers back online.
"Kitt, it's pretty fucked up in here, it's going to take awhile." Andre reported.
"Alright keep at it." Kitt turned to Drek and Shar. "Recon the area, see what you can find out...there's no one alive down here, but still watch your steps."
An hour passed when Andre clapped his hands together and yelled. "Yes! We're in, I have to download the whole database to reconstruct it though, seems like someone really wanted to get in here, it's fragmented to shit. About twenty minutes tops."
Kitt stood up from his chair he was sitting in with a worried look on his muzzle. "Hurry, we've got company."
Within a second the com units piped up with Alec's voice. "Look alive people, sensors are tracking four alliance battleships on fast approach."
"Confirmed Alec, all units meet at the central landing grid" Kitt commanded charging out the security room. "Andre, stay here and get the data ASAP."
Kitt and his landing party stood at the edge of the mammoth concrete circle, watching several huge heavily armed troop transports descend from orbit, one touching down a few meters from them.
A moment later the loading ramp lurched towards the ground, pouring out about fifty armed troops. They fanned out quickly around Kitt's group, ordering them all to drop their weapons. Kitt's crew all looked to him for instructions.
"Everyone be cool, we're on the same side." Kitt looked out to the soldiers. "I want to speak to your commanding officer"
Off of the ship marched another solider, a Lion male dressed in the same green and brown armor, with captain's stripes on his shoulders. He walked right up to Kitt, looking him up and down assessing the situation. "Captain Xavier Grier, alliance deep space marine corp. What is your purpose here?" he said extremely bluntly.
Kitt cleared his throat. "Captain Kitt Alistair, independent starship Whiterunner. We received a distress call from this planet and responded; when my ship arrived we scanned the planet and uncovered no life signs."
"Thank you for your assistance Captain Alistair...we'll take it from here." The lion said barely listening to anything Kitt said.
"Captain, don't you even want a more in-depth report?"
"I'm sure we'll come to the same conclusions you might have. But send any of your data to our command ship."
"But..." Kitt continued.
"Sir, I'm trying to be civil. I don't want to have to hold you and your ship for questioning, good day sir "The Captain turned away signaling for his troops to spread out through the complex.
"Kitt, you're not going to take that are you?" Drek whispered into Kitt's ear.
"Not worth it Drek, let's go." Kitt tapped the speak button on his headset. "Andre, meet us at the shuttle we're leaving."
Back up on the Whiterunner, Alec met the shuttle in the bay. "What the hell is going on? We were just given an ultimatum to leave the system or be arrested." Alec asked nervously.
Kitt looked to Alec and shrugs. "You know the military; they want to do it themselves. Let's be on our way, we still have cargo to deliver."
At TacPoint station the crew of the Whiterunner quickly offloaded their cargo of atmosphere filters and with no other current contracts Kitt gave everyone a couple days leave.
Kitt took one of the shuttles down to the planet's surface, a rocky world, near no vegetation and near ninety percent covered in water. Standing atop a tall rock cliff over looking the ocean he slipped himself into a meditation trance; the scene of Daven IV playing through his mind, something about it just didn't seem right, it almost felt like his old teacher Ven, but much more powerful. Kitt's eyes flipped open; he hadn't felt anything like this for three years, when he was fighting Tarn on the lupine home world.
"What is it Kitt?" Alec said coming up from behind.
"Can't be sure right now but I think there's other ascended furs out there. It's got to be."
"What are you going to do?" Alec said softly.
"Don't know yet, but I got a feeling this is going to get really messy." Kitt balled up his fists, a faint white aura forming around his body.
