Rabbit Hunt at the Petting Zoo
I'm trying my hand at writing a thrilling drama of cat and mouse. Comments and criticism are very welcome. I've been working on my paragraphs to not make them a walls of text.
Kyle the Rabbit liked to play dangerous games at the petting zoo on the bad side of town. The former human was always a thrill seeker. Transforming into a non-anthro rabbit was synonymous with victimhood to him. It was the ultimate risk and he loved every second of running for his life. The other former humans that now worked as non-anthro animals at the petting zoo were happy to oblige his suicidal urge to be hunted.
Sugar the White Wolf announces, "Today's game is rabbit hunt! Kyle here, is today's prey. The rules are simple, Kyle gets a 15 second head start and then we chase him down. He has to get from this corner of the park to the attendant on the far side. He will collect a ribbon and then make his way back here. No guarding the attendant or the finish line. All you have to do is steal one of the ribbons around his neck. You can grab a ribbon or corner him to force him to give one up. Winners get steak dinners! Try to be mindful not to knock down any guests during the event."
The dozen gathered predators chuckle remembering the time Dave, the Coyote, crashed into a guest. Dave stands next to Kyle, his mouth drooling with a crazy look in his eyes. He whispers, "You're not getting away from me this time my little steak dinner." Dave reaches his long coyote tongue out to lick the rabbit from it's head down to it's tail. Kyle is thoroughly spooked by how serious Dave is taking the game.
Kyle's adrenaline levels spike at the fear of Dave taking the chase too far. The brown and white rabbit tries to shake himself dry from the drool covering his body. He thinks 'at least the dirty coyote's mouth has covered my scent a little.' The faster animals push through to the front of the pack to get a better chance at catching up. The slower predators hang towards the back with the strategy of ambushing on the return portion of the journey. The harder Kyle runs to the checkpoint, the slower and easier he will be to catch on the return. Both groups have their parts to play.
Standing at the front, Dash the cheetah does stretches to warm up. His best friend Spotty the leopard extends and retracts his claws. Dash says "I'm hoping he will take a straight line towards the checkpoint this time." Spotty says, "He's not that suicidal. He's gonna have to stop somewhere to catch his breath. I think I know a tree I can climb to ambush him."
Philthy the Polar Bear, sits at the back. He's not particularly fond of this game but participates because Sugar talked him into it. Looking at an info kiosk, he studies a map to determine the best choke point to corner the rabbit.
Scotty the Komodo Dragon sits at the back of the pack with the ambush team. He's glad to just get invited to these sorts of things.
The sisters, Sheree the lioness, and Tina the Tigress discuss strategy. Tina says "We have a good chance of catching him if we hide behind some herbivores. They always try to help him. So he's gonna run straight towards them." Sheree smiles in agreement with the plan.
Cody the Hyena stands beside Sugar. He's excited to participate in his first hunt.
Blade, the raven, is assigned to a special recon unit. His job is to circle overhead and give updates to the hunters.
A few other predators round out the hunting pack.
Sugar stands at the starting line and looks at a clock. He asks, "Alright Kyle are you ready?" Kyle says, "Yes", as he walks between all the hungry animals. They eyeball the three ribbons hanging off his collar as if they were the promised steaks. Before Kyle can make it between all the animals at the starting line Sugar slams a paw down on the timer and quickly says, "Your time starts now!" Kyle swears under his breath and bolts between the legs of Dash the cheetah.
Sugar laughs and says "He said he was ready" The rest of the animals give barks and roars to pump themselves up. A loud buzzer echos through the park to signal the predators start. The chase team sprints away. As Sugar and Cody run they watch Dash rocket away toward the checkpoint. Sugar asks "Do you still smell his scent?" Cody says "No."
Sugar yells to the animals behind him "Spread out! He's already taken a detour." Sugar yells to Blade, the raven flying above them, "See anything up there?" Blade yells down "I think I see a commotion over this way." He turns to fly towards it.
Cassandra the Kangaroo heard the buzzer signaling the start and waits around to see if Kyle decides to come her way this time. After a minute she see's him sprint towards her. She holds her pouch open and says, "Need a place to catch your breath?" He quickly dives in and she tries to look like she is watching something that ran past her as a few hunters run by.
Kyle tries to slow his breathing to regain some energy. After thirty seconds she says "Coast is clear!" He pokes his head out to look around then climbs out. Kyle gives his thanks and heads off at a right angle from where the hunters ran.
A minute later Dave has his nose to the ground sniffing out the trail. He walks up to Cassandra and asks, "What's in the pouch, darling?" Cassandra quickly says, "Nothing." Dave spits back, "For some reason, I don't believe you." Dave reaches a paw up and pulls open her pouch to look in. Cassandra blushes as the coyote's nose reaches in to sniff around her intimate area. Dave calmly says, "You've been a naughty girl. Tell me which way he went and I won't tell anyone you helped him."
With shame at betraying Kyle, Cassandra points in the direction he went. Dave trots off continuing to sniff the ground.
Spotty the leopard, climbs a tree to get a good view. He settles down between two branches and surveys the area. With excitement he spots a brown blur in the corner of his eye. Turning to get a better view of the approaching target between the leaves, he sees that it is a child in a brown hoodie. The child looks up and asks, "What you doing up there?" Spotty rolls his eyes at his now blown cover. Spotty replies, "I'm trying to find my friend Kyle the rabbit. Will you keep an eye out for him and get him to come over if you see him?"
The child says, "Okay!" and starts looking around for any rabbits. After a minute the child finally spots a rabbit running across the path. The child calls out "Kyle!" and waves his hand. Kyle falls for the bait and approaches thinking this was someone who wanted to help. Spotty gets in a position to pounce down. The child says "Hi, your friend was looking for you!" Kyle asks 'Which one?"
The child points to the branch above him and says, "That one!" As Kyle looks up to make eye contact, Spotty says, "Freeze! I don't want to hurt you or the child pouncing on you from this height. So just pull off a ribbon for me and get on your way." Kyle knows when he is beat. He steps on a ribbon and raises his neck to detach it from his collar.
As Kyle hops away, Spotty calls down to the rabbit, "Sorry, using the kid as bait wasn't in my plan. It kind of just happened."
Kyle sees the raven flying above the predators further ahead of him so he does a lateral across the park so he can approach the checkpoint from a better angle.
The move takes him through the limited touching area of the petting zoo. A few people are standing beside the fence, reaching over to pet the employees. The low metal fence on either side will limit his escape if a hunter showed up on the path. Willing to risk it, he dashes down the killzone. Halfway down the path he hears a bark behind him. Kyle turns to look over his shoulder and sees Cody the Hyena has spotted him. Kyle turns a corner and spots Christmas the Reindeer and Bucky the Whitetail deer. They are talking with a guest. Running up to the guest he asks the human to place him on the other side with the deer. The deer sit side by side as Kyle uses them to shield him from view as the hyena runs by.
Kyle sighs with relief and says "That was a close one. Thanks guys!" Chris replies, "No problem little buddy." Bucky asks "Want us to block the path for a few minutes if anyone else comes by?" Kyle says "Please! I just need a few minutes to cut across this way. All the hunters are back the way I came." Bucky and Chris hop over the small fence and lay down in the path. They are prepared to lower their antlers if any animals came this way.
The guest places Kyle back on the path and the rabbit hops off to follow where Cody went. A minute later Dave comes sniffing by and gets stopped by the deer in the path. Bucky says "Sorry, someone pooped on the path and we wouldn't want anyone to step in it." Chris says "You're gonna have to go back and take the long way around."
Dave tries to push past but Chris pokes him with an antler and repeats "Go around." Dave sighs and turns to run around the long way to catch up with Kyle's scent.
Spotting the hyena, Kyle decides to cut behind a building to get around him. Looking around the alley Kyle decides that there probably hasn't been enough time for the ambush team to get into position. With caution the scared rabbit hops towards his goal, looking into the recessed doorways. He reachs the end and sees Franklin, the park attendant, sitting on a bench talking with park director Swanson.
Kyle hops over to Franklin, "Hey Kyle, you're doing pretty good if you still got 2 lives left. Who got you?" Kyle answers "Spotty ambushed me from a tree." Mr. Swanson says, "That's too bad, I know how you enjoy getting the perfect bonus on your score."
Franklin clips the extra life onto Kyle's collar. He looks up to see Dash and a few other hunters watching them from 30 feet away. He calls out, "You know the rules! No guarding the checkpoint. Now, lay down, cover your eyes, and count to 15." Dash begrudgingly complies.
"Good luck!" Franklin and Mr Swanson call out as the rabbit sprints through the pack while they count out loud.
Deciding that the path he took was his best option, Kyle runs past the doorways again. Philthy the Polar Bear steps around the corner of the building to face him down. Kyle crashes to a stop. Philthy's deep voice says "I don't think it's a good idea to risk going back. Giving me a ribbon to pass is better than risking them all."
Kyle hops up to the bear in defeat and Philthy plucks off a ribbon with his teeth. Philthy smiles and gives the rabbit a tip for his cooperation, "I heard Scotty talking about laying in the ditch to watch the drainage tunnels by the snackbar. You could trade that other ribbon for safe passage. They go all the way to the finish line."
He considers the plan. Since Philthy works with the maintenance crew as their mobile toolbox, hauling equipment around the park, he knew more about the park than any other animal bothered to learn.
Kyle runs off and Philthy waits ten seconds to let out a roar of victory that echos through the park. Sugar hears the roar and thinks 'I can't get outdone by that bear."
Blade is circling around looking for anything suspicious. He see Sheree the Lion laying against Frank the Camel in the grass. Her paws are resting on either side of his hump as she peeks over to survey the surroundings. Tina the Tiger is hiding behind a Zebra, her orange fur makes a poor camouflage.
Blade spots the rabbit running towards them and gives a caw to announce he spotted the target. Sheree and Tina hunker down to surprise the rabbit. They hear him coming and Sheree uses Frank as a spring board to leap towards the rabbit. Kyle manages to zig out of the way of the flying lion. He knows her sister has to be close by.
Seeing Zachary Zebra laying in the grass looking at him with a scared expression on his face is a dead giveaway of were Tina is hiding. Kyle does the unexpected and jumps on Zach's back to springboard over him. Tina is surprised by the bold move and gets a late start at chasing him.
Tina and Sheree continue to give chase but the rabbit is too agile for them.
Kyle thinks 'I'm halfway home. Maybe I won't need the tunnels.' He finds a place to hide to regain energy. Shelly the giant tortoise walks over to greet Kyle "Hey Kyle, How's the hunt going?" Kyle pants and replies "Two lives down and I'm almost home." Shelly says, "You better be careful Sugar is planning an ambush up ahead."
Kyle frowns and asks "Have you seen Scotty the komodo dragon?" Shelly says "Yeah, he was hanging out by the snack bar. They look towards the snackbar in the distance. Sugar and a few others are drinking from buckets of water waiting for the action to come their way. Kyle looks around in the sky for Blade. The skys are clear.
Kyle asks, "Shelly I need you to act as my mobile cover. Just walk towards the snackbar while I take cover behind you. Make a slow turn to walk to the counter when you get close. Kyle was glad the low employee tables were on the other side to where he needed to go.
Kyle's heart raced as Shelly set out to towards the enemy team. She tries her best to stay low to the ground as she walks. The animals all turn to look at her as she walks towards them. Shelly is glad she's cold blooded and didn't have to worry about sweating bullets. She tries to remain calm under the burning stares of the hunters.
When she reaches a close enought distance she attempts to make small talk. "How is the rabbit doing out there today?" Spotty says "I caught him stopping under a tree." Kyle tries to control his breathing as he feels his heart beat pound in his ears.
Shelly turns towards the counter and says "Let me order a drink and you can tell me all about it." Kyle pivots with the turn trying to keep Shelly between himself and the hunters. The balding snackbar attendant watches with amusement at the ruse happening in front of him.
When they are out of sight of the hunters Shelly orders a pineapple juice. When the attendant reachs down to scan her microchip Kyle jumps in the way. "It's on me", he whispers.
Walking around the other side, he sees Scotty the Komodo Dragon guarding two 12 inch diameter drainage pipes in a ditch. Kyle gathers his courage and attempts to persuade his way past.
Kyle whispers "Hey Scotty, don't make a sound." The dragon looks to the voice and spots his prey. He whispers back "Why would I do that when there is a steak dinner in front of me?" Kyle's mind races at the answer. "Because one whole steak is better than having to share between the group that would come running to catch me. Let me into the tunnel and you can have a ribbon all to yourself."
Scotty considers the pros and cons. The choice is between not having to share a steak and having Sugar like him more for catching the rabbit for him. Food is greater motivation and Scotty motions into the tunnel with his scaley claws. Kyle holds his neck up so Scotty can pluck off a ribbon and then scampers into the pipe. Kyle just hopes there isn't anyone waiting for him at the other end.
Dave continues to follow the trail past the camel and zebra. Through some bushes and up to the snackbar. He finds the rabbit's scent inside the tunnel and races off to where he thinks it will come out. Stopping every now and then at the various grates that feed into the pipe Dave finally finds the rabbit crawling past one.
Dave says in a menacing sing song voice "Kyyyyle, where is my little steak dinner going?" Kyle tries to bluff his way out and replies "I'm going to win. There are so many exits that you can't cover them all." Dave thinks for a moment and says, "I could if I howled for backup."
With a smile Kyle says "Do you want to risk someone else catching me?" With despairation Dave says, "Surrender now or I'm not going to go easy on you if you choose the wrong exit." Dave gets that crazy look in his eyes and chomps his teeth at the steak dinner taunting him from behind the metal grid.
Kyle looks around and spots a dirty quarter that rolled down the drain. He grabs it between two front toes and launches the metal disc out the grate to hit Dave in the face. Rage overtakes the coyote and he starts barking incoherently at the grate as Kyle crawls off.
Kyle searches for the exit and finds one. He can still hear Dave's barking echo through the pipes behind him as the coyote searches for the path Kyle took. Willing to risk it, Kyle pokes his head out and looks around. Seems clear. He places his paws on the tunnel to peer above it. He can see Dave searching the wrong tunnel outlet in a rage.
Kyle shakes the dirt out of his fur and sprints to the finish line. A few humans give an applause as Kyle jumps on the button for the ending alarm. He looks at the score board, it's not close to his best but at least he finished this time. A few howls of anguish echo through the park.
After ten minutes all the hunter animals assemble for the award ceremony. Scotty, Spotty, and Philthy sit off to the side, safe from the punishment. Mr Swanson announces "Since the rest of you, failed to get steak dinners, Kyle is nice enough to share his reward."
Franklin holds up a fresh head of lettuce. He peels off a large leaf and folds it into a square. He holds it out to Sugar's mouth. Begrudgingly Sugar the wolf opens up and Franklin stuffs it into his mouth. He goes down the line of losers giving out the 'reward'. Cody the hyena eats his leaf happily, enjoying the refreshing taste. Tina and Sheree have enough class to accept the gift without making faces. Franklin even picks off a small square for Blade. Dave the coyote angrily chews on the leaf and quickly swallows it. He stares daggers at the rabbit.
Franklin places the rest of the lettuce on a plate in front of Kyle and he happily eats his prize. He can't wait for next week's game.
