#15 of The Great Balancing

The remnants of the Alliance fleet hung in the murky depths of hyperspace just out side the Capitol. Tarn, Kitt and Alec stood on the bridge of the Hun-Son, looking at the masses of Dominion ships around their planet.

"Fuck, what are we supposed to do?" one of the admirals exclaimed.

"Send out a broad band communication to all Alliance ships to head to the Orris belt, we'll setup a staging area and find out what our options are." Tarn ordered quickly.

The briefing room was littered with angry, confused shouts all wanting to know what they were going to do.

"We need to keep a cool head hear. Nothing will be solved by yelling." Tarn bellowed.

Slowly all the commanders lowered their voices and quieted down.

"Alright good, this is what we know; all three of the Alliance capitols have been taken, Lion, Vulpine and Lupine home worlds. From data collected so far they are merely holding them and minimal civilian casualties have been suffered. However this won't last long." Tarn explained. "Our goal should be to pick away at their strangle hold, and our highest probability for success is to start with the Vulpine home world, also with it's state of the art ship construction yards it will afford us time to rebuild our forces." Tarn gestured to Kitt, whom stood from his seat.

"We will organize several hit and run strikes for a week straight to distract the Dominion from surveillance wings. With full knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses we hope to have feet dry on Vulpine in no less than two weeks, any questions?" Kitt looked about the room. "Good, report back to your battle groups and await specific orders. Dismissed!"

The meeting broke up empting the briefing room except for Kitt, Alec, Tarn and the otter high admiral Ben.

"You really think two weeks is enough time to pull off an attack like this with the fleet we have?" the chestnut brown admiral asked.

Tarn looked to Kitt. "I believe so Ben, but what we really have to do is crack the super soldiers. Which is where General Stracarrius comes in" Kitt continued as the elderly pale black wolf stepped up.

Kitt and Alec stood across from each other in a cargo bay aboard the Hun-son, both with their eyes closed meditating.

"Begin!" a voice echoed throughout the steel room and their eyes shoot open as both wolves throw their right arms out connecting at the wrists; the two twist their arms around each other jockeying for position. Kitt spun around sweeping his leg out Alec he reacted by simply raising his leg Kitt's then vaulted into the air, flipping over his mate.

They were about to continue when they heard. "That's enough." then the elderly wolf stepped into the bay, dressed in his high ranking green lupine military uniform. "We've got enough data for the moment. And I must say that you both have exceeded everything we projected."

"How long until the data is compiled?" Alec impatiently asked.

"Don't know, we've been recording your energy patterns and life readings for eight hours, that's a lot of information, best guess...two days." The brown wolf general answered.

Alec growled a little bit under his breath.

During the night Alec didn't sleep, he simply stared out the thick armored glass of the Hun-son into the cluttered asteroid belt with hundreds of Alliance ships floating within it.

"Still awake hon?" Kitt said softly as he entered the cabin.

"Can't sleep, I want to but I can still feel him...." Alec responded distantly.

"Who? Caster?"

"I don't know how to explain it, guess it's some sort of IFF system, so the super soldiers can fight at their max and avoid getting any other in the way." Alec explained.

"Ah..." Kitt uttered wrapping his paws around Alec's waist.

"Any reports from our hit and run ships?" Alec said changing the topic.

"The first attacks went as planned, the recon is still being analyzed but it looks like it'll be a blood bath when we go in..."

"Figures..." Alec sighed.

"We'll know for sure tomorrow though." Kitt said back calmly.

"Kitt...how do you do it?" Alec said turning around to face his dark furred mate.

"Do what?"

"Live knowing that you, with the snap of your fingers could destroy a city block?"

Kitt shrugged a bit." Fate...as much as we'd like to believe we're in control of our lives, the basic fact of it is...we've chosen to be who we are because no one else could."

"So you are an ascended being because no one else could handle it? What about Tarn, he's ascended too."

"But we're not the same he's a completely different person than I am." Kitt explained.

"Alright, so I decided to have these devices put into me because anyone else couldn't do it?" Alec asked.

"Exactly" Kitt responded with a smile.

"That's eerily comforting, if not egotistical." Alec joked.

"Yeah but it works." Kitt gave Alec a big loving hug.

"We have managed to analyze various aspects of the system the super soldiers utilize by combining data from the early Blazer Objectives, the numerous encounters with Hun-gar Alistair, the disc brought to us by the defectors and tests done on Hun-gar Alec Drominaz..." General Stracarrius began speaking to the briefing room filled with the top ranking fleet officers. The General displayed an image of Alec while fighting. "The system works as follows; a multitude of nanites are injected into the subject's body, these tiny machines act as energy collectors, drawing in natural energy around them. These..." the picture over lapped with several green spheres on Alec's body. "...are what convert that power into what is known in the martial arts circles as 'ki' in a fashion, super charging the body. With the alpha and beta classed soldiers this process acts rather slowly so they tire and become weak quickly. However with Omega series such as Alec the conversion rate is much faster so the energy is near unlimited."

"How does this help?" One of the lion admirals asked.

"The average duel between Kitt and an Alpha or Beta series lasted a mere five minute that tells us that if we can put consistent fire upon them for that period we can over take them. Also knowing that they draw energy from the area around them, means certain magnetic weaponry may be able to interrupt their charge up making them no faster, stronger or smarter than an average foot solider." Stracarrius explained.

"I'm not familiar with this whole concept of 'ki'. I get the faster and stronger bits but why are they smarter and able to defy the laws of gravity?" Another officer asked.

"I believe Hun-gar Alistair would best answer this...Kitt." the general said gesturing to Kitt.

"The soldiers and myself aren't so much intellectually smarter but 'ki' in scientific terms causes Nero receptors in the brain to work faster, we intake information our scenes give us and process them much faster. As to how we defy gravity, just like a particle cannon draws in magnetic waves to drive the projectile out of the barrel, Ki is used to drive our bodies into flight, seemingly impossible hand to hand movements and even create destructive energy weapons out of thin air."

"Thank you Kitt." Stracarrius said. "We will begin adapting our weapons and deflector shields to create this null field; and begin finalizing the battle plan for the vulpine home world. We will hold feet dry in the capitol Vulcape in t-minus five days, start preparing your crews, Dismissed!"

As the meeting breaks up Tarn came up to Stracarrius, Kitt and Alec. "Will Alec be able to function if we use these new weapons?"

Kitt and Alec look to the General. "Absolutely, I didn't want to make it public knowledge that the Omegas series aren't bound by the need to draw power."

"Then how do they do it?" Tarn asked.

"With Alec series of nanites they have no need to convert all types of energies they draw right from ki itself. It is self perpetuating just like Tarn and Kitt."

"So basically the Dominion has simulated down to the letter an ascended being?" Tarn inquired.

"Not exactly, they can only go so far. Alec's current power level is roughly ninety four million and Kitt is standing at a hundred, twenty three million, but the difference is Alec will not be able to increase his levels without overhauling the entire system, while Kitt and yourself expand the more you train or fight."

"That gives us a definite advantage then..." Tarn exclaimed excitedly.

Kitt sighed. "I know this keeps getting better and better but, Caster is different he is an Omega super solider, but I think he was also on the verge of ascending on his own before he underwent the enhancements, I don't think I can beat him..."

With a mighty roar the Alliance fleet flies at the Dominion defenses. Small bird like fighter craft zoom around, dodging left and right as the massive cruisers launching volleys of missiles and particle beam blasts at each other.

Kitt sat in the command chair aboard the bridge of a fast attack gunboat as they pushed through two Dominion carriers flying through clouds of exploding gas and pieces of their hull plating that was sheared away. Kitt shouted out several orders to the pilot and weapons officer while in direct telepathic contact with Tarn and Alec. "Tarn, bring your fire to barring four, seven, nine" Kitt's ship twisting upwards heading directly towards a battleship near four kilometers in length, dipping dangerously low along the blocky hull, the ship narrowly slipping by several thick orange energy streams from the Hun son that impact on the battleship's skin.

The battleship's hull buckled and cracked as it explodes with Kitt's ship just barely clearing the shockwave. "Alec, how's you're approach?"

"We're five by five Kitt if you keep their fire drawn we should have feet dry on the Angolas defense platform in five minutes, copy?" Alec responded from his group of five space marine landing craft.

"Confirmed Alec" Kitt swiveled his chair to the weapons officer. "Let's give'em hell, attack wings gold and blue, switch to pattern beta."

Kitt's sleek purple and blue skinned ship spun on its axis, followed by a dozen similar looking ships towards the planet and the spherical shaped space station. "Concentrate all your fire on the lateral stabilizers, we have to disrupt there defense shields." Kitt ordered, soon after all the ships in the formation open up with every weapon they have, dozens of red beam weapons and missiles strike the bubbling shields of the station all in the same spot causing the blue hued energy barrier to phase and crack.

Alec's landing craft flew through the failing shields and latch themselves to the light gray steel outer skin of the station, lowering tube that connected the bottom of the ships to the station. "Kitt, we've made contact, break off."

With a snap and a bang a circular section of the station's hull fell away, pouring through were the marines and Alec with the lead, near instantly engulfed in a heavy maelstrom of gun fire from the occupying Dominion soldiers.

Alec followed through with several more teams of soldiers, making their way through the corridors, then suddenly stopped, raising his paw, then stepping around a corner meeting a black military uniform wearing hyena, instantly sensing he is a beta series super solider. "Go on a head, I'll take care of this, watch your steps there's a detachment of troops on the next level." Alec cautioned his troops as they moved by.

The hyena grinned and drew his side arm, firing off several lightning quick shots. Alec responded dipping backwards the bullets soaring past his body then Alec rushed up to the hyena taking two steps up a wall and flipped over his head. The hyena turned swinging his gun around, only to have to caught by Alec who delivered a vicious side kick to his ribs but where a kick like that would have sent his body flailing away, Alec's grip on his wrist served as an anchor and jerked him harshly into the steel paneling of the floor; Alec stepped through with a soccer kick to the ribs simultaneously letting go of his dislocated arm sending him screeching into the wall.

"Kitt, the Northstar is pulling out, we have to hurry this up!" Tarn exclaimed from the bridge of the Hun son.

"Five more minutes, Alec is almost at the command center!"

The armored blasted door bent and buckled as the breeching charge blasted it off its hinges lead by Alec the marines quickly take command of the station, forcing the Dominion crew to their knees.

"Alliance fleet, final stage positions" Alec commanded through the com system of the station as the soldiers quickly took command of the consoles. "Ready weapons from all platforms and fire at will!"

As the Alliance ships race to safe distance the hundreds of satellites as well as the massive array of weapons aboard the station spark to life, showering the Dominion ships with an explosive fury.

"Targeting sensors realigned, all ships move in and cut off any Dominion ship's escape." Alec ordered from the command deck of the station.

Under the cover fire of the station, the Alliance ships dive back into the fray, demolishing the Dominion fleet and within five minutes of intense combat the Alliance reassumed control of the Vulpine home world. Quickly routing out the last Dominion soldiers on the planet, Kitt, Alec and Tarn along with the other top ranking officers begin rebuilding their tattered forces.

"With the easy part out of the way..." Kitt sarcastically said as Tarn, Alec and himself watched surveillance tapes of the Dominion forces around the Lupine and Lion home worlds.

"From current data, we're looking at fleets at least twice the size of what we encountered here." Tarn said solemnly.

Kitt sighed and shook his head. "We can't win..."

"What?! We have too..." Alec exclaimed.

"It's not possible this time. Look we've been pulling lucky strikes this entire war, and I don't want to say it but it's true..." Kitt said turning off the display. "With that kind of fleet and ground forces, they'd pummel us to dust before we even got clear of the jump gate."

"Then we don't use the jump gate." Tarn suggested. "We reverse engineer the portal technology and tweak it with our own research."

"We don't have a year to wait around for that. At best we have a few weeks before their strangle hold becomes solid and then it won't matter what technology we come up with." Kitt fired back then walked right out of the room.

Alec watched Kitt slink out of the room, then looked to Tarn only giving a nod before chasing him out into the hall of the Vulpine parliament building "Kitt! Wait, what gives?"

"I'm tired Alec, I don't want to fight anymore..." Kitt said softly not turning.

"So what, we just pack it up and call it even?!" Alec shouted sliding right up in front of the sulking black furred wolf.

"I don't know Alec, I can't think straight anymore..."

"Look I know this is growing old but we need you now, more than ever." Alec pled placing his paws on Kitt's shoulders.

Kitt didn't even make eye contact with his mate. "Let go, please."

Alec lowered his paws and stepped to the side. "Fine, listen we have a lot of work to do, so settle your issues fast."

Kitt moved past Alec, walking away.

Alec came back into the meeting room where Tarn leaned over the table leafing through reports. "So? What's wrong?"

"Kitt's just burnt out he's been pushing himself for what, a year? He just has to blow off some steam, give him a day or so." Alec said plopping down in one of the chairs.

"How about you?" Tarn inquired nonchalantly.

"Me? I dunno. I just want this over. Getting frustrated." Alec said putting his feet up on the table.

"Tell me about it...feel like working some of it off?"

Alec's ears perked and he grinned. "Hope you can keep up."

Tarn's eyes dart left and right through the trees trying to locate his target. Suddenly Alec appeared right in front of him throwing out his fist, Tarn quickly blocks the blow of to his side curling his wrist around Alec's and thrusting his powerful leg into Alec's ribs then flipping him over towards a tree. Alec grunted and stopped himself mid air a mere inch from the tree and rubs his side. "You're just lucky I'm worried about Kitt."

Tarn nodded "I'm sure if this was real you'd have mopped the forest with me...but since I'll never get this opportunity again..." he smirked and lunged at Alec.

Kitt sat at the end of a bar, with the release of the planet from the Dominion then place was rocking busy with celebrating furs but Kitt just sat there nursing his beer and pack of cigarettes. It wasn't the fact that the odds were astronomically against them it was he was so tired, he couldn't focus anymore.

"Hey! You're Kitt Alistair, aren't you?" Kitt heard someone calling to him.

Looking around Kitt saw a reddish orange fox waving at him. Kitt simply nodded and tipped his drink to him.

The fox bound up and quickly shook his paw. "Oh my god, I can't believe you're in my bar! Thank you so much." He exclaimed.

Kitt smiled a bit. "I really didn't do much you should be thanking the Alliance."

"Still from what we've been seeing on the news, without you we'd be totally fucked!" The fox said picking up a microphone from behind the bar. "Hey everyone, listen up. We have a guest of honor among us tonight..." The mass of furs slowly quieted down. "Put your paws together for a true hero, the fur sitting right here at the end of this very bar. Kitt Alistair!!" The crowd erupted into a mighty roar of cheers and hollers.

Kitt blushed a bit as the bar owner passed Kitt the microphone. "Thank you everyone, really I'm just doing my job." The owner handed Kitt a fresh beer. "I really think the thanks should be going out to all of you for your support and your courage through this dark time..." Suddenly as Kitt looked out over the hundred or so Alliance citizens realizing why he started do this in the first place. "...I promise to all of you, we will win this day!"

The noise in the bar was almost deafening of hopeful cries, Kitt slammed back his beer.

The next morning, Alec, Tarn, General Stracarrius along with the other Generals and Admirals sat in one of the conference rooms being briefed by several technicians when Kitt crept into the room with heavy dark sunglasses on.

Alec shook his head seeing his mate standing there. "Have fun last night?"

"Ugh yeah, just about every fur on the planet bought me a drink." Kitt slowly sat down. "Please continue."

One of the technicians cleared his throat. "As I was saying sirs. It'll be near impossible to out fit any of our ships with a portal drive within the time frame due to conflicts with current deflector system because of the radically different energy frequencies it would tear any ship to pieces. And it would take months to adjust the hull plating of a ship to generate a similar field."

"What kind of frequency are we talking about?" Kitt inquired softly rubbing his nose bridge with his fingers.

"A trilinier field rotating in the 36.47 terahertz range..."

Kitt instantly looked at Alec. "The Whiterunner, my ship's hull plating is outfitted with a cazium core, its deflectors run at forty one terahertz."

"Uhm sir, I don't mean to be rude, but that's not possible, there's no metal in the alliance that can handle that type of power and certainly not cazium." the tech informed Kitt somewhat smugly.

"It is if the structural integrity field is twice the power and since cazium absorbs energy it only makes it stronger. Funny what you can find out on the galactic rim eh?" Kitt fired back, shooting the technician down.

"Alright fine...the Whiterunner, where is she?" Tarn asked.

Kitt again looked at Alec, as he adjusted in his seat. "Uhm, we don't know, I kinda sent them on their own."

"What?!" Kitt blurted out.

"Look I'll explain later, we can still track them with the one Lupine transponder we couldn't remove. Hopefully they're willing to help." Alec said quietly

The slim gunboat zips up to the Whiterunner. "Hey Shar, what's going on?" Kitt said with a smile to his former sensor officer.

"Kitt! Oh you're alright, we were getting worried. You coming aboard?" the silvery furred female fox responded with a giddy tone.

"Yeah we'll be over in a minute."

Kitt padded off the shuttle right up to Shar giving her a big hug while Alec simply stood off to the side silently.

"Hello Alec..." Shar said softly giving him a hug. "We were worried about you as well you know."

"Thanks Shar, but I'll bet Drek isn't in that 'we' part." Alec uttered.

"He'll get over it. Now, I'll assume you both want your commands back." Shar asks quite professionally.

"No, no..." Kitt interjected. "The ship is still yours...we just need to hire you."

"What do you mean?"

Kitt and Alec brief their former crew on the situation and the battle plan. Drek, the purple largely built panther sits at the end of the table with his arms crossed over his chest. "This is insane, you want us to out fit this ship with an inter-dimensional drive, which you're not sure will work. Then take us into the Alliance capitol to take out the early warning systems and defense satellite control bases so what's left of the Alliance fleet can make a last ditch effort to retake the planet. Oh and don't let me forget, Caster is probably already there waiting for you. Did I miss anything?"

Kitt gave Drek his usual cocky grin. "Nope, that's about it, you in?"

"Fuck yes!" Drek exclaimed.
