Chapter 5: Learning to Hunt

Seth had spent the next 3 days practicing his flying, and exploring the jungle. He was getting good enough at making sharp turns that he could fly through the jungle with relative ease. He had eaten the last of the dog like lizards legs the day before which had been getting a bit ripe in the hot and humid air, and he felt much better on his new all meat diet. He doubted he could eat another fruit or vegetable even if he wanted to, especially after the way it had made him feel before.

He hadn't completely wasted the past five days just flying around. He had also been thinking of how he was going to get his next meal. He knew he would have to intentionally find and kill something if he was going to continue to eat meat, and to survive. Even though he had a body made for hunting and killing, he still didn't know the first thing about hunting. But he did have one idea that he thought might be worth trying. He remembered how the smell of fresh fruit had attracted that large animal out of the jungle, and he decided to give it a try.

Seth sat motionless on the top of a tree branch about 100 feet off the ground, looking out towards the long sandy beach; towards the ocean. He had broken a melon, and scattered the pieces along the edge of the water. He could smell, the sweet smell of the fruit in the air. He knew all he had to do was wait, and eventual something would smell it, and come to eat the broken pieces.

It was maybe only half an hour before he started to see movement coming from below. He sat motionless, not wanting to scare the animal away. He watched a green, two legged, reptilian animal emerge from the forest. It was almost as tall as he was, and looked to weigh about the same. It had horns covering it's head, and thick scales covering it's back, and the claws on it's feet were short and stubby. It had two arms, but the claws on it's arms were long and curved, and looked sharp. He would have thought it was a predator from the size and shape of the claws on it's hands except that he could see it's head was build for eating plants. It's head had a flat broad shape, and it's lips were to large to make it a predator.

He sat, and watched as it made it's way away from the safety of the forest down towards the shore. As soon as the animal dropped it's head and started eating the pieces of fruit Seth quietly leapt from his concealed position high up in the tree. He glided down towards the unsuspecting animal without flapping his wings, so as not to make any noise. When he was almost on top of it he thrust his legs forward, and spread his taloned feet wide.

As he hit it, he clamped down with all of his might, but his claws couldn't penetrate its thick hide. The animal jerked upright from the unexpected contact, and they both fell onto the sand. Seth was on his feet before the creature was. As it struggled to get onto it's feet, he quickly grabbed it around it's shoulder and neck. He jerked his head back just in time to avoid it's claws from slashing across his muzzle. He wasn't sure what to do next, and was beginning to feel like he had just gotten more than he bargained for. The animal swung at his face again, and again he pulled his head back just in time.

Things seemed to slow down, and he found himself looking at the exposed underside of the creature's neck. Without even thinking about it, he spread his jaws as wide as he could. He lunged forward, and bit down as hard as he could. He then grabbed the animal's arms, and held them away from his face. He could hear the animal's high pitch screams as his razor sharp teeth sank into it's neck. He applied more force to his bite, until he heard the loud crunching sound of breaking bones. As soon as it's neck broke it's body went limp. Seth could feel himself being pulled down to the ground, and he released his grip at the last second, as the creature fall to the ground.

He looked down at the gaping wound he had just created in the animal's neck. He was breathing hard, and he looked around quickly for any signs of danger, but he didn't see any. He turned his attention back to the dead animal at his feet. 'It's to big to carry back to the island,' he thought to himself.

"I'll have to cut it up and carry it back in pieces," he said to himself, as he rubbed the end of his muzzle. He didn't waste any time, and began to butcher it as quickly as he could. He managed to get one front arm and two rear legs back to his island before a large four legged animal about the size of a car chased him off. He wasn't really that pissed at being denied the rest of his prey, because he doubted he could even eat what he had already taken before it would begin to spoil.

Seth threw the second severed leg to the ground, and leaned against a tree to catch his breath. The fight was over, and he knew he was safe, and only now could he feel the adrenalin and excitement beginning to slowly fade.

Only after he had returned with the last leg did he finally realize what he had just done. When he had accidently killed that other creature days earlier it was nothing more than an instinctive reaction, and the only thing he had felt was a lingering fear. Even though he had killed both with his bare hands, it still felt much different than what he was feeling right now.

As his chest heaved in and out he replayed the fight in his head. He could feel his nervousness when he first landed on it's back. As it swung at his face he could feel himself beginning to panic. He quickly over came it in that split second when he saw it's exposed neck right in front of him. He then made the choice to attack, and that choice stood out in his mind. He could remember being rewarded as his jaws closed around it's neck. He could feel his teeth sinking into its flesh. He then remembered grabbing and holding it's taloned hands safely aside so it couldn't swing at him. As the creature struggled he could feel the weight of it's body against his, it's strength against his. He could feel every muscle in his body straining against his prey. The powerful emotions confused and consumed his thoughts for the remainder of the day.

Seth spent the next three days not having to worry about food. He still had a lot of meat leftover, but by the third day it was starting to get spoiled. He figured it would be good for one more day, but after that he would have to throw out what was left. But he wasn't about to wait until he was completely without food before he went looking for more. So he decided he would try baiting another animal.

He knew he was inexperienced at hunting, and had no choice but to teach himself. He had a lot more common sense than most people, and the fact that he was still alive was prof of that. One thing he did learn was that he had a vicious bit. Hunting and killing with your bare hands was something he never could have imagined when he was human. At least he now knew what he was physically capable of. The hardest part was to overcome his past life as a human. He knew what he had to do, but his inexperience still made him feel nervous. To him, his nervousness felt the same as if he were about to make a speech in front of a large crowd of people for the first time.

He put out more bait as he did before, and eventual after a rather long wait he spotted an animal slowly walking out from the jungle below him. It was brown, and walked on four, short, and stubby legs. It was about half the size of a cow, and it's back and tail were covered with spikes.

The thing stopped at the edge of the jungle. It walked back and forth a few times, and looked like it was going to turn back towards the relative safety of the jungle. The sweet smell of fresh fruit must have over ridden it's sense of caution because it started walking towards the sweet smelling fruit.

Seth could understand why it was so cautious, and spent so much time looking around, because it was incredibly slow. It wasn't much faster that a turtle, and on the open beach it would make for easy prey. He was starting to get impatient as it finally made it to the broken pieces of fruit. As it started eating, he leapt from the tree, and glided down towards his completely oblivious prey. He decided it wouldn't be a good idea to land on it's spick covered back, so he landed a short distance behind it. As soon as he hit the ground it spun around with fruit still hanging from it's mouth. Even though he was planing on biting it, and had convince himself he could do it, he could see that it might not be a good idea.

The creature's neck was short, and was covered with spikes on the top and sides. The animal turned, and started to frantically walk back towards the jungle. Seth tried to think of a safe way to kill it. He could only see one option, and he quickly walked up along side it, and using his claws he slashed the tendons of it's right rear leg. It yelled in pain, and spun around with jaws snapping, but Seth gave one powerful flap from his wings, and hurled himself safely out of range. With it's rear right leg paralyze, and hanging limp, the creature went on the defensive, keeping it's head pointed at Seth at all times.

With the creature's head pointing directly at him, Seth ran towards it then leapt into the air and flapped his wings at just the right moment, and sailed up and over it's back. The second he hit the ground he spun around, and slashed the tendons on it's other rear leg. It yelled in pain again, and now both of it's rear legs were useless. It tried to spin itself around to bit at him again, but it was struggling to lift itself. It was bleeding profusely, and the sand was quickly turning red.

Seth could have simply waited for it to bleed to death. But it wouldn't take long with the smell of fresh blood in the air to attract other predators. He cautiously walked up from behind it, and quickly reached down, and racked his claws across it's throat with such speed that it didn't even see him until it was to late. He could hear a loud gurgling noise as it struggled to breath. After a few minuets the noise stopped, and he knew it was dead.

Seth had kept his eyes on the jungle while he waited for it to die, and he had yet to see any sign of danger. He quickly started to cut away one of it's rear legs as quickly as he could. He got one leg free, and quickly got to work on the other. After severing both rear legs he carried them back to his island. He used some vines, and tied one leg in the same tree he had used before, and he threw the old spoiled meat into the ocean. He carried the other leg up to his perch at the top of his island.

He thought it was almost comical, as he held the huge leg in his lap, like a caveman. He could have cut off smaller more manageable piece, but he didn't feel like it. He sat holding the leg in his lap, and took slow bites out of it as he watched small animals come out of the jungle, and begin to rip into the animal he had just killed.

Several weeks had gone by, and Seth had gotten some more experience at hunting using his baiting technique. He was starting to feel confident in his ability to hunt using nothing more than his teeth and claws. He also didn't feel nervous when he was hunting anymore. Getting more experienced helped him to make his kills more quickly, and with greater speed and accurate, but that wasn't what stopped him from being nervous He found that the more he hunted, the more he was starting to like it.

He still had some more meat back at his island, but today he wanted to try something new. He wanted to find and kill something without having to bait it with fruit. He was starting to enjoy the thrill of the hunt, and for some reason he found it wasn't much of a challenge baiting his prey.

He left his island, and flew down the cost from early morning until sometime in the afternoon. He had seen plenty of animals of all shapes and sizes, but nothing that peaked his interest. He continued following the cost line until he saw a wide river which emptied into the ocean, and he flew down for a closer look. The river was shallow and rocky, many of which were covered with moss. There were more of the huge skyscraper size trees lining both sides of the river.

He had never been this far from his island home before, and he was feeling excited all over again at the opportunity to explore some place new. He flew down and landed on a large tree branch a few hundred feet above the river.

The air was filled with the sounds of hundreds of flying reptiles. Off in the distance he could see a herd of large bus size animals, eating plants that were growing in the river. It was a sight like nothing he had ever seen before. It was so different that it made him want to explore more of this strange world.

He continued to sit and stare at the seen around him until something caught his eye. He could tell it was an animal of some kind. It was laying on a rock sunning itself by the look of it. It was green and brown, and was about six feet long most of which was tail. It looked like a giant gecko, except that it had six legs. He got an idea as he stared at the strange creature. He stood up, spread his wings and stepped off the branch, and he steered himself towards the giant gecko. When he was right on top of it, he thrust his legs forward, and caught it with his taloned feet. He began flapping his wings trying to gain some altitude, and he could feel it thrashing back and forth. When he was a few hundred feet up he lost his grip on it, and he watched it fall.

For a minuet he thought it was going to get away, then he remembered he had wings and it didn't. He watched it hit the ground, and bounce a few times before landing in the river. He soon floated down after it, and landed on a moss covered boulder. Fortunately the water was only a few feet deep, and it wasn't flowing every hard. He climbed off the boulder, and onto a shorter rock, but his foot slipped on the slick moss. He was stuck with one foot on one rock, and the other foot on the opposite rock. He could feel his legs spreading wider the further down he slipped.

The moss covering the rocks began to peal away, and he slide further down the two rocks until he was doing a perfect split. He gave a low grunt, and quickly brought his legs together, and fell the remaining ten feet and landed in the shallow water. He had never done a perfect split before. He guessed he was either naturally limber, or double jointed. It surprised him that he hadn't discovered this until now, and that he was still discovering new things about his dragon body.

He found the dead animal, and it's ribs were protruding through it's scaly skin. It wasn't very heavy so he picked it up, and flew off with. When he was up high enough he brought it up to his face, and looked it over. He thought about finding a place to land to eat it, but he decide he would try eating it in the air. It wasn't very muscular, and he found himself merely nibbling at it. He ate everything except for it's head, feet, and guts. It was enough to satisfy his hunger, and he let the rest of it fall back to the ground.

He didn't bother flying back to his island that night, instead he slept on one of the highway size branches on one of the enormous trees. He found a bunch of giant leaves, and covered the branch which he hoped would help keep the bugs that lived in the thick moss off him while he slept.
