Solace in Misery - Part Two

The next part, which I accidently didn't upload for a week or so after if was finished. I hope you enjoy it, though it may not be what you expect, and if you're disgusted by it, I am sorry.

I woke with a pain all but literally splitting my head in a million pieces. I tried to sit up but was forced back down. I decided to just stand up from the bedroll I was on, but my knees were too shaky to support my body, so I fell to the ground.

"God damn it!" I yelled, using the wall to shift my way around the room to the door. I got out and found I was still in the bar, but only that mouse and the bar tender were there. I shut my eyes to try and stop some of the pain before stumbling out to the nearest barstool.

"You, I want two shots and-"

"No, I'm not getting you anything alcoholic!" He said, slamming his fist down.

"Please, if I may ask, could you stop drinking so much? It's just that, um, you almost hurt yourself real bad last night..." I turned to the quiet voice that spoke and saw the mouse a few feet behind me.

"And why the hell do you care if I hurt myself or not?" I yelled, snorting at him. He turned around and cowered, as if I threatened to kill him.

"Hey asshole," The bartender said, grabbing the collar of my shirt with both hands. "That is no was to talk to him like that!"

"Why, it's not like he's done anything for me!"

"Bullshit! He followed you from the last bar to here making sure you didn't walk into the street by accident, then when your drunk ass broke my pool table, he washed dishes till midnight to pay for it, then worked another four hours so I'd let you stay in the spare room! So you owe him a god damn apology you scumbag!" I turned back to the mouse, who was avoiding eye contact and idly kicking at the ground.

"I-I... I'm sorry. I've been through a lot in the last day. I didn't mean to be so ungracious. Thanks for helping such a jerk like me, even though I probably don't deserve it." I said, putting my head down on the counter. He came up next to me and sat down.

"That's not true..." He said in a timid voice.

"What's not true?"

"You do deserve it, it's just that, oh, um, never mind..." He said, his voice getting progressively quieter.

"I- um, ok."

"So, are you gonna order anything or do I finally get to throw you out of here?"

"I'll get a shot of-"

"One breakfast sandwich, coming up!" The bartender said, turning around and heading into the kitchen.

"But I-, what?" I shook my head, realizing that I was actually quite hungry at the moment. "So then, whats your name?" I asked the mouse.

"I, um, it's Jason."

"Well, I'm Jeremy."

"I know..." He mumbled, hardly audible.

"What was that, I didn't hear you."

"Nothing,"

"Ok then, well, what do you do?"

"Nothing..."

"So, you don't have a job?"

"Nope,"

"How do you pay the bills and keep a house or even an apartment?"

"I don't live in one..." I almost had to strain to hear him as he kept getting quieter.

"You, don't? Where do you live?"

"Well, I um, I do odd jobs for food and rooms, like washing dishes and other things like that." I suddenly felt really bad for him, more so because I was being a complete asshole to him for no reason a few minutes ago. The bartender returned and slid a plate in front of me before going back to clean up a few things.

"Well, how about you come back to my apartment and stay for a while, it won't be a problem."

"Really?" He said, his eyes almost glowing.

"Yea, sure. Just after I finish this we'll head over there."

A short walk later we had arrived at my apartment.

"So, why did you help me yesterday?" I asked while I unlocked the door, pushing it aside.

"Well, um, it's just that I thought that maybe you kinda deserved better than her..."

"Well that's, wait, what? I'm confused right now. Better than who, Genny?"

"Yea, you loved her but she didn't care for you, and that made me sad..."

"Why would that make you sad, that happens to people all the time."

"But you loved her a lot and cared for her, and-"

"Wait a second, how would you know all this? You haven't been following me, have you?" He shifted nervously where he stood, avoiding my gaze. "Then, hang on, that was you on the train a month ago, wasn't it?" He nodded, still looking towards the floor. "Why would you do that?" I asked, sitting on the couch.

"Because I saw how much you could love and, and..."

"And what?"

"And I, I wanted to be loved that way, but I wasn't going to hurt you to get that. So, I did the next best thing I could think of, by being near you, even though you didn't notice me." He said, sitting next to me. "Y-you're not mad, are you?"

"No, no I'm not. Actually, I'm sort of flattered by that. I was beginning to think I'd never find someone who'd love me. It's really reasuri-" I was cut off mid sentence as the mouse pulled me into a kiss. I was totally blown away by the unexpected advance. Suddenly he pulled back, jumping off the couch towards the door.

"I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I'm just going to go. Sorry." He started to whimper as he walked towards the door.

"Wait!" I shouted, getting up from the couch. He stopped but didn't turn around. "I don't know you that well, and I know this sounds crazy, but I don't want you to go. I-I feel different around you. I feel... loved and complete."

He turned around, a glint of hope shimmering in his eyes. "D-do you really mean it?"

I walked towards him and put my hand behind his head. "Does this answer your question?" I pulled him into a deep kiss, one that took both our breaths away. A kiss that could mean one thing and one thing only.

Love.
