Chapter Eight: Getting to Know
I opened my eyes. I heard movement near me, but it was still dark and I could not see anything. I saw a shadow, it would of had to been Alexis. Damn she gets up early I thought to myself. I rolled over to try to go back to sleep but found that there was something next to me. I could hardly make it out but, it was Serra. She was fast asleep, though I thought she had gotten up and went to her tent last night. I remembered my dream that I had, it made my cheeks redden. I rolled back over onto my back to try to go back to sleep again. As I rolled Serra's sleeping body did as well, her arm ended up across my chest, I did not want to wake her so I left it there. She had moved close to me, now laying on her side facing me. For about an hour I laid there like that, the sun started to rise so I slowly moved Serra's arm from around me and got up, trying my best not to wake her. I looked over and saw that both the tents had already been packed. Maybe Serra packed her tent up laid down to rest and fell asleep I thought to myself.
"Hey, morning love bird." Alexis said.
"What?" I asked her.
"Well, I will say this that it is clear that she likes you. Look she came out in the middle of the night and laid next to you. Sure maybe she just wanted some fresh air or something and fell asleep, but why would she have laid next to you to do so?" She said.
"Uh, well I don't know." I said, I could feel my cheeks getting red.
"Come on, don't blush it's nothing to be ashamed of." Alexis said smiling.
"Yeah well, maybe for you, but it is for an assassin." I said
"You don't seem like an assassin to me, you seem nice." She said putting her paw on my shoulder. "You are a good person, who was just put into something bad."
"If you say so. I believe there is nothing else I can do." I told her.
"You can do anything you want. You just have to put your mind to it." She said.
"It's hard for me to believe that." I said sighing.
"You like her don't you?" She asked.
"I...I don't know. I was taught not to have feelings for the target." I told her.
"So that's all she is to you? A target? Money?" Alexis said. "Maybe I was wrong about you."
Alexis turned and walked off into the woods. I stood there for a while looking at Serra sleeping. I could not lie to myself that I was attracted to her. She was beautiful. Plus, why would she like someone like me I asked myself. I'm nothing more than a tool. I sighed and sat down next to the fire pit. I put a few more sticks of wood onto it and started to fire back up. I heard someone moving so I looked over, Serra was getting up.
"Oh, I feel asleep out here." She said. "Forgot about that."
"Yeah." I said, it was all I could get out.
"Oh, uh, sorry about that. I didn't mean to fall asleep here next to you." She said. I could see a small hint of a blush in her cheeks.
"It's fine." I said.
"Well, I'm going to get Blake up and then we can eat and get on our way." She said.
Serra got up and went about her business. After about an hour we had a meal to eat. We all ate sitting around the fire. Alexis Blake and Serra all shared stories. I sat and listened eating quietly. After we finished eating we all got up and started to walk. We had no idea where we were going, or what we were going to do when we got there. We just walked.
"So, Drake, what is your story? How did you end up here?" Alexis asked me.
"Why do you want to know?" I asked.
"I want to know the story behind everyone. Other than being a mage I am a scribe. I want to write down everything that happens." She said. "And I want to know what has happened."
So I told her. I started from when I got the contract from my master to kill Serra. I told her about how it all went south when Blake and the guards showed up. Described to her how we got from Serra's home to the town.
"And then we met you, and now here we are." I told her.
"That's interesting. A nice change of events." She said.
"Yeah, I guess so." I said.
"You know, it was a touch of destiny that brought me to you two." Blake said.
"Yes, you could say that it was." Serra said.
"I mean, if I would not have came to you, I would have been killed, or put in jail." Blake said.
"That is the possibility." I said.
"Well, it looks like we're all friends now." Alexis said. "An adventure group. Serra is the warrior, Blake the hunter, Drake the assassin, and I'm the mage."
"Yeah, and one heck of a group we make." Serra said.
"So where are we going?" I asked.
"Let's go on a quest." Alexis said with a big smile.
"We can do that after we find out why we are wanted dead." Serra said. "Until then, we are heading for the town Orion. I know someone there who knows where we can find Drakes master."
