Chapter Nine: Rest first
We had been walking for a while, and finally we could see the town in the distance. The sky was slowly getting dark and we were all tired. My legs felt like they were going to fall off from walking all day nonstop other than an hour brake to eat dinner. Serra did not seem that tired, nor did Alexis. But Blake seemed the most tired, he would not shut up about his foot paws hurting.
"Oh, come on guys can't we stop for five minutes?" Blake begged.
"You can stop, we will continue on to the town." Serra said.
"I don't want to be alone in the woods with assassins after us." Blake said.
"Fine, then keep walking." Serra told him.
"God, I will stay back with him." Alexis said.
"Fine by me." Serra said and kept walking.
"Hey Drake." Alexis whispered to me. "Now is the time to find out."
"Find out what?" I asked, but she had already started to walk away.
I turned and walked following Serra. I caught up to her and walked next to her. She looked over and smiled at me. I smiled back, and I could feel my cheeks redden some. Why am I so shy around this girl I asked myself. She is just another person in the world nothing else. Right?
"Your not tired are you Drake?" She asked me.
"No, I'm fine." I lied.
"Good." She said with a bright smile. "I hope we can get all of this assassins wanting us dead thing fast so that we can go on to other things?"
"Well, what about Alexis, she may decide to leave once we do that." I said.
"If she dose then that is her choice, she is free to." Serra told me.
"Well, what if I want to leave? After I save your life I am free to do so by the assassin's oath." I said.
"Oh, well, if you wish to leave after you save me, that is your choice. I will not stop you." She said, I could hear a hint of sadness in her voice. Was she saddened by the idea of me leaving?
"Well, I might stay, this is much more fun than being an assassin." I said.
"Really? I mean, uh, yeah." She stuttered.
"Yeah." I said.
I had never heard her unconfident in her word choice. Did she really like me? Or was it just my imagination? I was most likely just imagining things. Why would someone like her want someone like me anyways? I'm nothing special, unlike her. She was beautiful, smart, and funny. I was none of those things.
"So, what do you think of Alexis?" Serra asked me.
"Uh, what do you mean?" I asked.
"I don't know, but Blake told me earlier when we stopped that he thinks he is in love with her." She told me.
"I think he is in love with her looks not her." I said blankly.
"Maybe, but it's something." She said.
"Yeah I guess so." I said. "Don't really need a couple of love birds in our group though."
"Uh, yeah I guess not." She said. I could hear that same hint in sadness as before.
"Well, it wouldn't be all that bad, as long as it didn't interfere with the groups safety right?" I asked.
"Yeah exactly." She said with a smile. The sadness gone from her voice.
I returned the smile and we continued to walk. The town was just a few minutes away. We walked into the town there were a few guards that were standing at the entrance, they did nothing to stop us, and I knew they saw my assassin's mark so I figured that we were welcome there.
"Drake you wait here, I will go get us some rooms at that Inn over there." Serra said pointing at a large two story building.
"Ok, I'll be here." I told her.
"When Blake and Alexis come through, meet me in the Inn's main room." She said,
"I will." I said smiling.
She smiled back and walked off to the Inn. I stood for a few minutes then sat down. I waited about ten minutes longer before they showed up through the gates, they were talking about something but I was not paying attention. I stood up and walked over to them.
"Come on, Serra got us rooms in the Inn over there we are going to go meet her in the main room of the Inn." I told them.
I turned and walked off towards the Inn without another word. I stepped into the Inn and looked around. Seeing Serra sitting at a table drinking I walked over to her and sat down at the table. Blake and Alexis followed me and sat as well.
"Order some drinks if you want." Serra said.
"I would like some rum." Blake said to a bar maiden.
"Just some water for me." Alexis said.
"Ok, so we have a bit of a problem." Serra said, "There are only two rooms open right now, so we are going to have to share."
"Well, I could room with Serra, and Blake can room with Drake." Alexis said.
"Um, no offence or anything but I would rather not room with another girl. Mainly seeing how there is only one bed per room." Serra said.
"Fine, I'll room with Blake, you can room with Drake." Alexis said.
"Uh, that, uh, sounds good to me." Serra said. I saw her cheeks redden a bit.
"You can have the bed I'll sleep on the floor." I told her.
"Really? Thanks." Serra said with a smile. "It's best that I go to bed now, I'm tired from all the walking."
"Same for me." Alexis and I both said.
"I will stay here for some more drinks, then I will go to bed." Blake said.
Serra Alexis and I got up and went up stairs where all the rooms where. Serra handed a key to Alexis and then opened the door to our room. She laid down on the bed right away. I grabbed a pillow off the bed and a blanket and laid down in the floor.
"Good night Drake." Serra said softly.
"Night Serra." I replied.
"Hey, Drake." Serra said.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Um, if you want you can sleep in the bed as well. You know if you don't want to sleep on the floor that is." She said.
"I, uh, I'll be fine here." I said, I could feel my cheeks burning red again, but it was nearly pitch black in the room and I knew she could not see me.
"Oh, ok." She said, once again I could hear the slight amount of sadness in her voice.
After a moment of pondering I slowly got up, carrying both my pillow and my blanket with me, and laid on the bed next to Serra. I laid with my back to her, and her back was to me. I covered myself in my blanket and let my head rest on the pillow. It felt good to be in a real bed for the first time in a long time. I was just about to fall asleep when I felt something touch my back. I realized that it was Serra, she had moved so that our backs were touching. It felt strange, but in a good way. I feel asleep shortly after.
