#2 of The People Like Us

If you are confused that is ok because chapter 2 introduces you to our next main character Alan! He's a big 'ol lovable dog so show him some kindness. Also, I'm sorry for all the grammar mistakes... late night writing is not my strong suit. As always, enjoy the story and don't be afraid to leave a comment (even if it's telling me the story sucked). Have a good one!

BEEP BEEP BEEP. The alarm clock blared at what seemed like a very unlikely time. The sun wasn't even making its signature orange glow through my light tan curtains but was instead still nestled away below the horizon. My bedsheet hugged around my body like a vice as I reached my way down to scratch my big hair covered belly with my proportionally as big paw. Being part tibetan mastiff meant that I had thick fluffy hair that tangled as I slept.

I gently pulled down the ocean blue bedsheet and slid it closer to the bunched up comforter that had been stolen from me in the middle of the night. A soft murr came from inside the tangled mess of material and so did a slight shift. I smiled down to the pile that inclosed the love of my life.

Sitting up was more difficult than it should've been as I tried not to disturb my slumbering friend, especially with how much my weight shifted the bed. Miraculously though I managed to slip out from the warm comfort of the queen sized bed.

I was careful to close the door before I flipped the light switch on in the small bathroom that was attached to our bedroom. All that is had was a simple toilet and a shower but was used more commonly than the main bathroom in the hall.

The early hour still weighed heavily on my eyes as i slowly slipped out of my black briefs and slowly turned on the water. The clear liquid spurted out and hit the shower floor with a hiss as it began to heat up to my desired temperature. Air in the small room started to get moist as i finally decided the water was to my liking. It was my first year as a teacher at Three Hills High School and i was nervous as anyone could be. I didn't even want to be a teacher when I grew up but i knew this would give the best start for me and my love.

The hot liquid streaked across my tangled fur. "What if the kids don't like me?" I shook my head to clear the thought and to get some water off of my face. Science was my calling and I could inspire others to follow the same calling. "This is the best job for me right now and could be the best job for me forever."

Just as i stopped thinking out loud the bathroom door opened and a familiar voice came in over the running water. "Babe, what are you doing up so early?"

I chuckled deeply and grabbed a bottle of fur wash before answering with, "Hun, I have to go into the school to go over my paperwork one last time and meet the intern that will be helpin' me." I rubbed my paws together to lather up the wash before starting to scrub the strawberry scented substance into my chest fur."

"Oh, ok. Would you like me to join you?" A short chuckle followed. I stopped scrubbing and slightly tilted my head to ponder the thought. It was always nice to have my mate around me.

"How 'bout you just take a day for yourself today, sweetie. Sleep in an' all. maybe go shopping." After finishing the statement I grabbed the loofa with the handle so that i could get the fur on my back.

"Mm-hhmm that does sound nice babe but I was talking about joining you in the shower."

I chuckled again and turned around to let the hot water begin to rinse out the wash from my slightly less tangled fur.

"Heck yeah." I smiled brightly as the shower curtain opened.

I beamed for the rest of the morning after my shower encounter. Breakfast, getting dressed, and as I sat in the car I smiled and happily thought of my perfect life. The worries of kids and coworkers didn't fill my mind as I drove to work in my black Nissan Maxima 2010. It wasn't even a fancy car but after my morning it was a cherry red Ferrari in my eyes. Perfectly manicured bushes after perfectly manicured trees lined in front of the posh houses as I drove by. The sun had also finally came up but it still had been way too early for anyone to be out and about.

"Hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell..," I sang along with my paws using the wheel a makeshift drum as my quick drive to the high school came to an end with me pulling into their newly done parking lot. It was practically empty save a few cars. I pulled up close to the other parked cars and did the same as those drivers had by putting the car in park. Then, I turned the key, took it out of the ignition and stepped out of the car. In the reflection of the window, I checked for wrinkles in my light gray and blue suit but to my luck nothing appeared to be out of order. The air was crisp and still cool from the previous night. With September just three days away now it was only bound to to get colder. The birds, however, were still here and singing as I walked up to the glass door and swiped my ID for me to enter the warm building. As I stepped in I was greeted by the warm scent of pine and a friendly, chipper sheep lady who was carrying a clipboard with her.

"Oh hey, You must be the new science teacher right? Mr. erm.....eh....," she quickly lifted her board and flipped through a couple papers to find my name, "Ah! Here we go. Mr. McFowler... I think that's right... but pardon me you don't look very... Irish."

I gave a light hearted laugh at the poor Lady's question. "Yes I know. My grandpa on my mother's side was a purebred Tibetan Mastiff. The rest of my family was... far from anything purebred. But yes I'm Alan McFowler the new science teacher." I extended my paw for the sheep to take as a gesture of greeting. She did happily and shook with enthusiasm.

The front room of the school, which I learned was called The Commons, was huge. It included the cafeteria, a place for children to sit and talk or read, and a waiting area for visitors to the office, which was also there close to the front for easy parent access. Doors led to the auditorium and library while stairs and a hallway led to the classrooms.

"Your classroom is on the second floor. Each science room has its own lab area. Mr. Jaggers is actually in your room now waiting to do the final check over on your paperwork."

I thanked the kind lady, whom I learned was named Janice Albertan, after I asked her for the directions to my classroom and headed off through the massive school. Every detail seemed planned and built by skilled workers. It was nothing like the school I had gone to as a child. Mine was small and insignificant while this was an architectural masterpiece. This was also only building two out of three. It intimidated me.

I rounded the corner of the open door that led to my future workspace. I stepped in, looked up, and lost all confidence as I was intimidated once again but, not by the building this time. I'd met Mr. Jaggers twice before and both times, even though we actually didn't talk, I swear a piece of my soul died. He was was a Doberman and he was maybe an inch or so taller than me. I was 6'4".

He held almost every detail of my life in his broad black paw in in the in the form of my well organized paperwork. The dog wore a simple black and white suit that made made the brown on his neck stand out prominently. I swallowed down nothing as I tried to keep my knees from trembling. It was like a journey to get over next to him and his gaze followed me the whole way. I sat on the opposite side of the small table from him and he placed the papers down.

"Hello Mr. McFowler. Hope the morning wasn't too early for you." Mr. Jaggers punctuated his sentence by placing his elbows on the glossy wood table and interlacing his fingers in front of his face.

"Oh, not at all, Sir. It was actually quite a pleasant morning." That it had been indeed.

"That's... nice. Let's just see... you're from a small farm town, correct?"

"Eh yes... not sure how that..." I tried to answer the question but was cut off.

"Just checking your story Mr. McFowler. Ok let's see.. mm-hmm... graduated from... yep... job experience...," the doberman rumbled as he just went through to make sure I had answered all the questions. I was just glad a school like this considered me let alone was actually hiring me.

"You answered everything so there is really nothing to do. Usually we have to go back over for sloppy handwriting of seemingly illiterate furs. By far you were the best applicant, though very young. 28... yes, very young." Mr. Jaggers stood and waited for me to do the same with an outreached paw.

I clasped it with my fluffy one and responded with, "I'm glad to have this opportunity. If I ever do anythin' wrong don't hesitate to tell me. I'm open to criticism." With that I got the stern dog to give a grin but this one wasn't friendly.

"I never hesitate, Mr. McFowler." And he was gone. The tall fur left the science room and was gone in an instant.

I let out a long sigh and slumped back instantly to the chair again. The kids no longer worried me then. It was Mr. Jaggers and how he might fire me if I stepped out of line.

Plink. My phone startled me as it went off in inside my suit pocket. I reached in and pulled out the small touch screen phone to see that I had a new message from my mate.

>From MY LOVE :-* <3 <3: Missing you already sweetie

A goofy grin adorned my face as I read the loving words from the screen and the typed my reply.

>Missing you too babe

Then my eyes slowly shifted from side to side to make sure that no one was in the room as my rebellious side got the best of me. I went to type the next message.

>And thanks for that shower. Can't wait to do it again, hot stuff :P

"Good God that guy needs a bell or something, jeez." The sudden voice from my door made me jump and almost throw my phone. I jerked around to see a petite white, long haired cat in a yellow blouse and black, surprisingly not covered in hair, skirt that was form fitting and came down to the knees. She was quite pretty, actually.

"Pardon?" The small feline made her way over to the table and sat on its corner before she decided to answer my question.

"Oh, that sour puss Mr. Jaggers. He's like a cloud of dark air and he just decided to stop by and tell me how horrible my room looked. Well, of course it does; I'm just moving stuff in from storage, jerk." The fur puffed out around her neck as she huffed and crossed her little arms around her midsection.

"I'm sure he's just doin' his job. I'm Alan by the way." We shook paws briefly, mine dwarfed hers.

"Audrey. You must be the new science teacher. Well I'm the Special Education teacher here in building two. My room is just right next to yours." She smoothed down her skirt with her white paws. "It's a special fabric that doesn't catch fur easily. Only have the one."

"Hmm?" I curiously looked at the cat.

"Oh, the skirt." I nodded politely and an awkward silence went over the room after that but the fluffy creature just seemed to be content with looking at her manicured nails for the moment.

"Oh! I was going to ask if we could meet our interns together. Easier, faster, and we all become friends. What do you say?" The bubbly feline gave me the biggest smile it seemed she could muster.

It probably was the best idea. At the least that would be my job for the next five years, so I indeed did need to make a few pals.

"Yeah, we can all just meet in here. I'm glad I don't have to interview them myself, heh."

"Tell me about it. I asked to sit in for when they chose my intern. I made it for, like, two interviews. Best to just let the school screen them." After that, the cat just purred contently to herself and looked at her red nails again.

For the next hour and a half we sat and talked about simpler things. She was from California and moved here to get away. I also learned that her favorite color was yellow.

"Yep! Just like daisies." She had said to clarify the color. Audry also explained that the old freshman biology teacher had left quite a few things in storage that i could put in here. The feline then added we could wait and have the interns help get it all in here.

The room was longer than wider and had desks for students already set up to begin the year. Two tables, one I sat at and another, were positioned in front of the desks. Then there was the desk that i was to sit at positioned in the front corner of the room. Finally, there was a door just left of my desk that i assumed led to the lab.

"So do you think he always has a stick up his ass or it's just because he has to work with snotty teenagers again?" A voice echoed down the hall feintly but was loud enough to hear from where i sat.

"Would you be quiet! That is Achi and I's new boss." Another voice rang and then an approving grunt came after it.

"Those must be our new slaves!" The happy cat clapped her paws together and slid off the table she was sitting on.

"But it sounds like there are three of them." I rumbled out as i too stood up from my seated position. The footsteps got closer but the voices had hushed so it was impossible to tell if i was correct. As luck would have it i was.

"So did someone forget to feed the guard dog out there his steak 'cause someone is grouchy." A lithe otter trotted into the room wearing a pair of "Tree Hills" sweats and a dark blue long sleeve shirt and he was holding a steaming cappuccino with a familiar green logo on it. The short creacher, but still taller than Audrey i might add, also had a couple of ear piercings in his ears.

"Hehe, you are a delight," Audrey walked over as the next two furs, a wolf in a green polo and an African wild dog in a blue one, joined us in the room, "I'm Audrey."

"I'm Darius. Sexiest man alive." The otter playfully stuck his tongue out at her as to show that he was joking. "And those boring yahoos are your new interns. I just tagged along."

"Miles." The wolf shook Audrey's paw. "And sorry about him." The canine shot a glare at the bouncing otter. "I'm the assistant for the Freshman Biology class. I guess I am looking for a Mr. McFowler?"

I cleared my throat to get the young wolf's attention as i began to walk over to the chatting pair. Audrey was eyeing the wolf like she was planning to make him her next meal so I decided that it would be best if i enterveined.

"That'd be me." Miles's eyes opened slightly wider as he looked up at me and then took my paw as he had Audrey's. It was firm and felt confident unlike the look on his face. The poor pup's ears were pressed against his skull and his grey tail was trying to curl itself around his leg.

"Oh don't worry," I let out a big hearty laugh and patted my belly, "Don't let my size fool you. I'm a friendly guy." Trying hard not to look vicious to scare the kid anymore, I smiled in a way that would look welcoming. It sure worked on that otter.

"Oh my my, you do look quite friendly big guy," he poked my belly, "Maybe we could be good friends."

Blood rushed to my cheeks as I heard the little creature speak. A devious smile was on his lips giving him the same look Audrey had had while looking at Miles just moments earlier. I rubbed a paw on the back of my neck and tried to smooth my bristling fur. What would my love think of this?

"Maybe we could be friends. JUST friends." I commented, trying not to be rude, but the otter rubbed a paw down my arm then back up again. When his fingers reached my shoulder once more he gave it a bit of a squeeze and smiled again.

"We'll see." Was all he said.

"Darius, stop. We brought you here so you weren't at home being lonely not to flirt with teachers." The surprising words that made me awkwardly chuckle came from the deep voiced canine that stood behind the wolf and otter. He had his arms crossed which made his shirt slightly wrinkle and he was shaking his head disapprovingly at the otter.

"Kill joy." The mustelid scoffed.

"Darius..." Miles warned as he glared.

"Honestly I don't understand why I don't just leave." Darius looked down to the floor and kicked gently at the ground.

"Because you love us, silly." The canine grabbed the small otter and wrapped him in a one armed hug. "Besides without us you would be lost."

"D'awwwww how sweet. Look at how cute they are hugging and making up. Are you two a couple?" Audrey spoke up and in unison both Miles and Darius shoved each other away and the otter even mumbled a "Gross, no" as it happened.

That was the last incident like that for the rest of the day and ,after some apologizing from Miles for being "unprofessional", we finally got to work setting up both my and Audrey's classrooms. Miles and Darius would bring in boxes from storage for me to go through and decide what I wanted and what should go back to storage. Not to mention I also had to figure out places to put the stuff that I wanted to keep in my possession in the classroom. Audrey and Achi just unpacked and arranged the cat's room to her own liking. We'd stop every thirty minutes or so to check each other's progress and laugh at how this won't even matter to the students once that time rolled around.

Mr. Jaggers came in about an hour into our progress just to make sure everything was going the way he liked which clashed with Audrey's plan a few times. Apparently her desk should be closer to the door then across the room from it, according to the doberman.

When lunch time came, both rooms were complete. We all gathered around the entrance of the school as it was time for the work day to come to it's short end.

"Thank you boys for all your help today. Looks like the school chose right." Miss Audrey gave a little wink to us as she got into her suburban. The air had significantly warmed up since I had been outside last. My poofy fur absorbed the sun's heat fast though, so I much prefered the cold morning. Just from the few minutes I was ready for a breeze.

"No problem, kitty. And see you later hot stuff." Darius walked past me and gave a small pat to my back as he did. The little guy gave me a wink of his own as he got into the, what appeared to be, some kind of sports car.

I saw Achi shake his head as the car drove off behind Audrey's vehicle, its black paint glinted in the sun.

"I can't believe that otter has the balls to just...," I began but was soon interrupted by a voice behind me.

"Settle in well Mr. McFowler? Your room looked to be in good order." The black and brown coated canine that was Mr. Jaggers approached me with his paws in his pockets. He hadn't seemed to of noticed my comment but i couldn't really tell.

"Uh yeah, it's a big room. i"m glad you had stuff in storage to put up. It would have been bland without them."

"Indeed. Have a safe trip home Mr. McFowler." The imposing dog opened the door to his own sleek blue car that appeared to be "eco friendly." The even taller than me canine had to duck down pretty far just to get into it.

Before his door closed he paused and thought before saying, "Mr. McFowler. I'd order some new posters too. Some of those appeared to be out of date."

"Uh, yessir," I struggled to get those words out of my maw before he completely closed his door. His car's engine roared to life from its nap it had all morning and he pulled out of the parking lot very carefully.

As the car drove out of the enclosed space and got out onto the road i let my shoulders slouch. I had been keeping a good posture in front of the Principle so that i could keep a good image. I didn't need to make any bad impressions. But, now that i was alone in the parking lot, I was able to relax and let out a deep sigh.

I let a smile come upon my face as i realized that i had survived my day. That was the official beginning to my job at the school. I couldn't wait to get home and tell my love about this.

The car was a little warm when i got in it from sitting idly in the sun but it wasn't over powering. I situated myself and closed the car door with a thud. Everything seemed to be in order after i put my seatbelt on so i turned on the radio.

"I still get jealous... You're too sexy...," Came on through the car speakers. My smile became brighter as i put the car into reverse.

"I fucking love this song," I said as I began to pull out of my new workplace.
