#1 of The People Like Us

Hello! This is the first part to my story called The People Like Us which introduces you to the first main character Joey. I know I am not the best writer so feedback is always appreciated.

I rested my head in my paw as I watched the passing street lamps glare against the window. Lightly playing music that I'd never heard before came through the car speakers creating enough noise to keep me from going crazy on this journey of ours. I barely even registered the sound though. My breath began to blur the window when I moved to a more comfortable position in the seat. I hated long car rides.

"We're almost there, honey," my mother told me as she reached over to squeeze my shoulder before returning her paw to the steering wheel. She let out a sigh and scratched her wrist probably just doing little things to keep her awake.

"Wonderful." My mom knew I wasn't happy about the move and I wasn't about to hide my displeasure now.

"Honey, its not that bad. Your dad got a better paying job at the college there and they'll even pay for our house. You can make a lot of new friends up there. It will be good for all of us, you'll see. Hey, they may even have another fox at the school you're going to. Remember how you didn't...."

"Yeah." I'd been in the car with her for 12 hours. I had heard every "better life" speech more than once. I was too tired to hear another one.

"All I'm saying is that our stars are shining brighter." She stopped talking after that, leaving silence between us, or mostly silence. I tuned back to the window to once again just stare out of it hoping to find something to look at to distract me. There wasn't even a star in the sky.

"Alright, time to get up." I felt a paw push on my shoulder a bit before I opened my eyes to see that we were no longer moving.

"You should get what you want for the night. We can get the rest in the morning." That was my dad talking from the back of the SUV my mom and I road here in. I heard him pull out a couple of the bags from the pile of luggage we shoved into the back.

It was still dark so I couldn't have slept that long or , I guess, I could have. I reached for my pocket to retrieve the only thing that could connect me to my old life with my old friends, but for a much simpler purpose. I pressed the power button but nothing happened so I held it for a while longer. The screen flashed awake for a moment before returning to darkness leaving me to still question what the time was.

"Hey, Dad?" I stepped out of the SUV and stretched my legs by bending them a little.

"Yes, Joey?" He started to carry the two bags he got from the back of the vehicle with him to the front door of our new house, his tail standing out away from his body trying desperately to keep the fox balanced.

I glanced over at my mom to see her carrying only a blanket and a pillow with her to the door. "Uh, what time is it?" Looking back at the pair, I remembered that I should be getting what I want to sleep with as well. I took a step forward to get to the opened back portion of our vehicle.

"Yeah, it's...," The older male fox fumbled with his luggage a bit before he just decided to put it down. He reached in his pocket and pulled out a single key that had a "Three Hills College" key chain attached to it before he looked down at his watch. "It's 2:37."

I'd only been asleep for a couple of hours but it was still late and I was damned tired. I reached for the first blanket I saw and pulled it out. There were no pillows in there so I decided they must be in my dad's pickup. That or there were none left. With a little bit of a grunt I closed the back of the SUV and headed over to where I could get one of my most needed resources at this moment. The pillow I chose was the one I used to have on my bed back at... where ever I call it now. It felt heavier in my paw after that, after remembering that I couldn't go back.

I dropped my muzzle down and dragged myself over to the now open door. My shoes were uncomfortable after wearing them for so long but I knew that if I were to take them off here I'd get in trouble for "dirtying the new house" or something. I walked through the moderately sized, bare living room. The walls were an off white except the one to my left was a light blue, giving the room a calming effect to my brain from the soft colors. There was an open archway leading to the kitchen on the wall across from the front door but I needed to find my room. Besides, there wasn't even food in there so what was the point?

"Honey, the rooms are through here," my mom said as she came through the other archway from the left side of the room. "You have a choice of two rooms. There is an extra."

I sleepily made my way passed her and gave a small smile to calm her nerves. I didn't need her to be even more concerned about me more than she already was.

The first door to my left was already open and I could here my dad going through his supplies as he got ready to get the sleep he could before he had to wake up and start moving us in. I went right on passed hoping he didn't feel like talking to me. I was lucky. Soft sounds could be heard from the bottom of my shoes rubbing on the carpet as I fought to keep myself upright. The hours of being awake were making everything about me drag, making me feel weak.

I gave out another yawn as I opened the next door. The room was kind of small but everything about it seemed new. New paint, new carpet, new smell, just like the rest of this house. It was alright but I preferred more room to move and put other thing besides a bed and a dresser. I guess I could have fit a shelf or something else close to that size as well, but I still wanted a bit bigger. I turned out of the small living space and headed to the next door with blanket and pillow in paw.

The door didn't even creak as I opened it. I looked inside being hopeful that this room would be what I wanted only to find a shower and sink looking back at me. My shoulders drooped as once again I backtracked into the hall. The next door was directly across the hall from the last so I didn't walk far. I crossed my fingers and turned the knob hoping that I could get something good out of this move. It was bigger than the last room for sure but the walls were painted an ugly yellow. I would have to repaint the whole room tomorrow before I got anything into it. That wouldn't be so bad, I guess.

I threw my sleeping supplies on the floor and hurriedly kicked off my shoes. The only thing I've hurried recently. The plush carpet that covered most of the house hugged my footpaws and relaxed every muscle in them. The t-shirt I was wearing came off next letting my fur underneath finally breath. The little orange things stuck up in every direction imaginable but I didn't care at the moment. I tossed my shirt to the corner and I slid out of my shorts next, tossing them to the same place.

I dropped down to the floor. I was ready to close my eyes and escape from this world as soon as possible. The pillow was cool to the touch making it even easier for me to drift off into the world of dreams. It would be tomorrow soon enough and I would have to work. I scratched my neck and sighed, "I hope it will be better here." Sleep welcomed me swiftly.

The light blinded me as it came through the window. "Wait, I have a window?" I opened my eyes and looked around the room I was in without lifting my head form the pillow. "Right, we're here."

I sat up on the floor and lifted my paws to the ceiling. My back popped a couple of times as I leaned from left to right before I let my paws drop back down. I opened and closed my mouth a couple of times as I tried to remove the morning taste from my maw. My knees complained slightly as I got up on to them and used them to shuffle over to retrieve my shirt and shorts so I could be at least a little decent when the movers arrived with all of our junk. With my clothes on I made my way across the hall to the bathroom to do what always happens in the morning.

Once I was relieved of my morning pressure I went out to the still bare living room. It was depressing to see nothing in our new home even though there was furniture on the way. The walls still calmed me though as I walked to the big open window next to the front door to see the ongoings of my new neighborhood. In front of our house was the moving truck and my dad talking to a much taller brown bear. My dad was still wearing his clothes from yesterday and the bear wore a white but stained wife beater and baggy jeans. They stood a ways apart and a ways from me but I could still faintly hear their conversation.

"So your telling me that I didn't order all of your services?" There was irritation in my dads voice as he questioned the bear.

"Look Mr. Clay, this sheet," the much bigger fur pointed to a clip board he held in his paw, "says you only needed a driver and that's it. It don't say nothin' about people to carry your stuff in." The bear let out a rumble as he turned and headed back to his vehicle.

"But I know I..."

"No ya didn't. This here sheet never lies to me. Yer just goin' to have to move it in yerself." The driver got into the truck he was driving but before he shut the door he leaned out, "I'll be in here sleepin' 'cause I didn't get none drivin' here with yer possessions. Just tell me when ya got yer junk out and I'll leave." The door slammed shut signaling the end of that conversation.

My dad sighed and headed for the door. I knew he was going to tell me that we should probably get started moving stuff into the house but I just woke up. I was sure as hell not ready to do manual labor this early, without breakfast even. So far this move was horrible and it just seemed to be getting worse. Best yet, how were my dad and I, two foxes, going to lift my grandma's china cabinet and get it into this house? That thing was bigger than both of us and I'm sure Dad was thinking the same thing.

My dad walked through the door and placed his paw on his forehead like he had a headache. "Mom should be back soon with breakfast. After we eat, it looks like we'll be moving everything ourselves into the house... however that's going to work." He let out another deep sigh and sat down on the floor. I guess I wasn't the only one getting stressed out about moving. He sat with both legs straight out and his back against the cream colored wall. His black nose was pointed to the ceiling and it looked as though he were in deep thought, trying to find a way that we ourselves could move everything in a days times.

That's when a knock came to our still open door. My dad broke his concentration and looked at our first guests in the house. "Uh, please come in." The older fox stood up and politely smiled at whomever was at the door. A gray paw came from the doorway and my dad accepted it into his own in the common greeting. "Excuse me for asking, but what brings you to our home. It's nothing personal. It's just we don't really.." He gestured to the empty room with his black paw.

"Excuse me please if this comes off as rude, but I couldn't help but overhear your conversation with the gentleman in the truck over there." The new fur came into our house finally letting me see that he was a tall wolf but to my surprise he was followed by a smaller otter and then another fur like I'd never seen. He gave a smile to me and tilted his head forward in my direction, "Hello."

"Right... I'm sorry if that disturbed what you were doing. I didn't mean for it to get out of hand..."

"Oh no, I just happened to be outside when it occurred. I was the only one to hear." The wolf who didn't seem to be very much older than me soothed my dads nerves.

"Yeah, the rest of us were asleep..." The otter that was about as tall as I was spoke up. He got a dirty "be more polite" look from the wolf that would be more commonly seen from a mother.

"Its just all three of us wouldn't be opposed to helping you move into your new home. Some of us could use the exercise." The canine let out a chuckle as he patted his little bit of a belly that he had. After, he continued to hold his smile letting all the tension leave the room.

My dad smiled back and took the wolf's paw in his own once more, "That would be wonderful. We really really really appreciate the help. We could pay you even..." My dad sounded very grateful and pleased with the offer of help. He resealed the other fur's paw but continued to beam at them with his smile.

"Oh we don't need payed, we're happy just to help." The wolf beamed back at my dad, seeming as though he were happy to offer himself and his friends for free labor.

"Actually some of us would prefer money." The smaller fur glared up at the wolf and crossed his arms, "But I guess I don't need any at the moment. Plus I needed something to do today." The tallest canine in the room gave the otter a smug look and then turned back to my dad.

"Please excuse me I forgot to introduce myself, I'm Miles Kagan." He gave another one of those smiles that he seemed to be full of. "And the rude otter's name is Darius."

The otter offered his paw to my father and then to me. Both of us gave it a shake in turn. "Darius Moore." The mustelid completed his name for us as he stepped back beside Miles . "And the one behind us is Akachi Solarin." I had forgot that there was a third to their little party and now not only did I not know what he was but I didn't know how to say his name. "Just call him Achi." The, what appeared to be, canine gave a nod and slight smile before going back to his stoic look. At least I could call him something now.

With the help of Miles, Darius, and Achi we got the couch, television, entertainment center, table, and grandma's china cabinet all in the house along with quite a few boxes before Mom got back with Dad and I's breakfast. Of course she just thought the three random furs were the movers that Dad was supposed to hire then accidentally didn't but as they carried in our dining room chairs and put them into place at our table, Dad told her differently.

"You.." my mom lowered her voice, "You are watching them right, to make sure they're not stealing anything?"

"Yes, dear. They're not going to steal anything." My dad rolled his eyes as he ate his sausage, egg, and cheese.

"I don't know, we could." The surprise appearance from the otter made everyone in the room jump. My parents both didn't look Darius in the eye as he placed the last chair at the table. "I mean you have some pretty nice stuff." He gave a little giggle and stuck his tongue out a bit. "I'm joking, really. Miles just can't say no to someone who needs help, and he just so happened to drag us in this time." The thick tailed creature wiped his face with the black t-shirt he was wearing and then his hands on his cargo shorts. "Actually, I'm here to help take boxes to the rooms they're supposed to go in but I, uh, don't know where they go."

"Oh, well, I can help you with that as these two eat their breakfast. I'll follow you." Both Darius and my mom left the kitchen to organize and put away boxes while my dad and I just sat at our newly placed table to eat our breakfast from a fast food restaurant. The savory but bad for you taste of grease filled my maw as I tried to eat slowly so I wouldn't have to get back to work.

My mind started to wander to what would happen in the upcoming months. School started in 3 weeks and I didn't know anyone I'd be going with. Hell, I didn't know anything about the school I would be attending. I'm not the best at talking to people. I could go for weeks in solitude before I found someone to be with or maybe even before I worked up the courage to talk to someone. "Then it would just be me and my ugly colored room," I thought to myself quietly. "Shhhhhoot, uh Dad?"

My dad gave me a quizzical look before he answered, "Uh, yeah?"

"Can I paint my room? I don't like the yellow color in it and the other room is too small for me." I gave my case to my dad hoping that I could do as I wished.

He thought for a bit before he gave me his answer of, "We don't even have any paint so you can't do it right now. Maybe we could just put everything in the smaller room and you can paint tomorrow. That will make it easier for you to not get it on anything..."

"We have some paint in the garage." The otter once again surprised us with his words as he graced us with his presence. "Yeah, I think you'd like 'em. They're left over from when Miles had to paint some houses for a realty company."

"He can go look at them I guess, right?"

"Yeah, he can go with one of us over to our house and look at the colors." The otter let out a small yawn that was actually kind of cute as he rubbed his eyes. If he was 5 years old my mom would be all over him saying how adorable he is.

"How far away do you guys live?" Somehow, Dad had complete trust in these people even though we just met them; however, I was still not entirely sure.

"Oh, we forgot to mention didn't we?" The otter laughed and it was just about as cute as the yawn he had earlier. "We live next door."

My father let out a laugh of his own as he finished his meal, "And here I was worried about what our neighbors would turn out to be like. Yes, when one of you have a chance take him over if it's okay that we use the paint."

"Of course."

I still took my time with my little breakfast to delay my work. I helped carry the little that had already been put into my room into the smaller one before I carried in a couple more boxes from the truck. It wasn't that long before we had a break in the action and I was able to get away with none other than Achi. It was a short walk over to their garage door.

"There you go." I was surprised to hear him talk as he showed me where I could find the shelf that held more paint cans than I was expecting.

After I got over my shock I read off the colors in my head, "Flower pink, electric blue, lime green, vibrant orange, eggshell, white, maroon, and then candy red which looked kind of pinkish." My choice was easy once I read them all. I grabbed the two cans of electric blue and a roller as he grabbed two tarps and a brush and we headed for the door. As I walked along with the strange creature my curiosity was killing me. "Uh um, don't take this the wrong way, but umm... what are you?"

Achi gave a small chuckle as he looked down at me "I'm an African Wild Dog, not very common around here. I was born in Africa and then was moved here with my mother when I was 2 years old." His deep voice was soothing and lovely as he told me about himself. "I don't mind that you asked. Not many people know and even less are brave enough to ask." He smiled down at me and I smiled back.

"You should talk more, your voice sounds cool." Ironically, we walked back to my new home in silence after that, but I didn't mind at all. We both weren't much for talking, so I don't think it bothered either of us.

I looked inside the back of the truck and then the SUV only to see that they were about done with moving everything into the house. All that was left were the beds and still more boxes. Achi went to help with my parent's big bed frame and left me with the tarps and brushes. I happily trotted into the house and made for my room. The horrible yellow color greeted me for the second and last time as I entered into my soon to be blue room. The tarps took little effort to lay down, just a little folding and flattening. I looked at the cans of paint and realized I had no way to open it and nothing to put it on for the roller.

My journey to find more supplies was stopped when I found my parents and Miles talking in front of my parents' bedroom. "Thank you, we appreciate this so very much. How about you three young gentlemen come over for dinner tonight?" By my mom's words, I was guessing that we were completely moved in or at least extremely close. I could still see some boxes piled up in our living room that finally had furniture in it now.

"That would be amazing Mrs. Clay. Would you like help with unpacking the rest of the boxes?" This canine just didn't want to stop helping, did he? I moved up to join the conversation and ask if anyone knew where I could get what I needed even if that meant going back with Achi to look in the three's garage again but I was interrupted my mom's reply.

"You already unpacked a lot of them for us and its getting to be lunch time. I would offer you something but we don't have that many groceries to work with yet. Still thank you for the offer." Everyone in the conversation was smiling at each other like they had been friends for ages which disturbed me greatly for some odd reason.

"Uh, does anyone know where I can get some..." Once again I was interrupted but this time it wasn't with words but Achi joined the circle with what I was looking for right in his paws.

"I forgot to grab these for you." He handed over a flat-head screwdriver and a small aluminum pan before he just left and went back to unpacking some more boxes that he was earlier told he could do so with.

I no longer needed to talk to them so I turned around and headed back with a shrug to my new project to paint and decorate my room.

"Uhg, finally." I flopped down onto my newly placed and made bed, the last thing I had to do before my room was complete. My black and blue bed set went perfectly with the colors I had gotten with Achi and my maple brown shelves and dresser. My dresser was big enough that I set my little 28 inch personal T.V. on it as well as the gaming systems that I have received over the past few years. Behind it was a heap of wires and probably some fire hazard because of all things plugged in but right now it was perfect. I could get used to this.

Things were finally looking up for me. I had a beautiful room and a nice new house, my dad was cooking hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill, our new friends were coming over. If that's what they were, of course. This could have just been a one time thing and we'd never see them again. I didn't need to focus on that though, I was still happy as I could be. The aroma of the cooking hotdogs filled my nostrils, and suddenly I realized I was famished from the day's events. Knowing that I had to wait until dinner was like torture to me: I had an acute sense of smell, even for a fox. I tried to focus on other things to get my mind off the hunger that was eating away at my stomach. My mom had turned on the radio to give us something to listen to as we went about our business for the rest of the evening and I could hear happy tunes spread throughout the house. I really needed to learn the names of songs so that I could get them on my laptop to listen to. I could do that later, all I wanted to do now was relax.

A loud yawn escaped my lips as I laid on my bed. I was still tired from the previous night but I didn't want to sleep now. I wanted to learn more about these three neighbors of ours and that could only be done when they came over tonight for dinner. They seemed interesting and not too much older than myself. I was pretty sure they went to the college here, that "Three Hills College" my dad is going to teach at this upcoming school year. I heard that it funded the high school here in hopes of getting some of the students to go to there as well. Still all three of them had to be at the most 21.

My eyes started to droop slightly as time passed but when I heard the knock at the door they shot up. I kicked my legs off of the bed and onto the plush carpet that I was beginning to love. I had taken a shower and changed my clothes to a green shirt and silver basketball shorts so that I'd be ready when they got here. I slowed my pace when I neared the end of the hall so that I didn't appear too excited to see them again.

"....and hotdogs. He made a bunch so don't be shy, eat all that you want." I heard my mom say.

"Don't worry, ma'am, we're never shy." I rounded the corner in time to see Miles give one of those smiles that he does, to my mother. I didn't see the other two so I could only assume that they were already somewhere in the house.

"Hey, Joey. You ready to eat?" I tensed at the sound of someone speaking behind me but once I figured out who it was I soothed down my ruffled fur.

"I'm good to eat, yeah." I didn't know what to say; I just answered his question and left it at that. The otter was still wearing cargo shorts but he had on gray shirt that said "Breaking Benjamin" on it. Whatever that meant. I noticed the wolf had also changed and was now wearing lime green basketball shorts and a white t-shirt.

"I see that lovely driver has left finally." The otter trotted right on past me and into the living room to talk with the other two. "I'm glad, I though I was going to have to share my dinner with the brute."

"He was just doing his job, Darius." The wolf once again was trying to teach the otter some more manners it seemed but just like before the warning went over Darius's head.

"You are both right, but between us, I wouldn't have invited him in anyway." My mom put her own point into the conversation ultimately stopping that little portion of it as she motioned for us to join her in the kitchen. We all, of course, followed the lady of the house to the room and into our back patio, which somehow had an outdoor dining area. "It came with the house." My mom answered my unasked question as we moved out into the aroma of my dad's grilling. "I thought it would be a shame to waste such a wonderful evening."

Darius and I mumbled our agreeing answers but Miles perked up and said, "Oh yes, the temperature is perfect to eat outside."

I finally found Achi. He had been out here with my dad watching him flip and roll his creations in awkward silence most likely making the fox feel uncomfortable as he worked. I chuckled at the thought as I made for the tabled with the others. Darius went to join the men who were at the grill as we walked to the dining area. The table had a foggy glass top and a white frame to hold it all together. The chairs were also white with what looked like wood seats on them and all had a dark green cushion that matched the evergreen tree that grew in the yard. The seats were as uncomfortable as they looked.

I tried my best not to stare at the wolf who just happened to sit across the table from me. He had that smile on his face as he happily looked around the yard and his nose wrinkled up a bit as he sniffed the aroma of cooking food in the air. I could hear his tail batting the chair as he sat there with the most pleased and happy look someone could have. Like a pup who got to go to his favorite toy store or something.

"So, Joey are you ready to meet a bunch of people at school?" He directed his attention at me, still smiling.

"Eh, more nervous than I should be but... I guess." My left paw drifted up to scratch my right shoulder as I answered his question. It still hurt a bit if I pushed strong enough on it.

"You'll do fine," he gave me a smile and a chuckle, "I heard you even got Achi to talk to you."

I blushed and nodded before I looked down at the table. My tail waved slightly from side to side from the compliment .

"As cute as you are, you'll find friends soon." He winked at me as my mother started to agree with him on my cuteness and about how easy it will be for me to get a girlfriend.

"Oh, Miles, Do you have a girlfriend?" My mother absently asked as she looked at her nails.

"Not recently ma'am. I haven't been with anyone for a week." He answered as though he'd been asked a lot about his relationship status.

"You broke up just recently?" My mom asked and Miles gave a small nod. "I'm sorry to hear that."

"It's fine, we didn't work well together anyways." That was the first time I'd actually seen the wolf show a feeling beside "I'm happy as fuck." His ears drooped down a bit and his eyes fell to the table and once again I couldn't take my eyes off of him. He blinked a couple times before he shrugged and sat back up in the chair with his friendly smile back on his face. "At least I'm still young and have a lot of opportunities to find someone else." Well, it didn't take him long to come back, that's for sure.

Darius came over after that and continued on the conversation without me, but I didn't mind. I was too busy taking glances at the tall canine across from me and watching him happily talk about himself. I did happen to hear that he did in fact go to the college in town and was going to be a sophomore. I also heard that he was just 19 leaving him only three years older than me. After that they turned to idle chat about the ongoings in the news which didn't give me any room to talk because I did not know what was going on in the world. It was just too depressing for me.

"What's your boys' majors?" Mom was apparently still interested in the two college students. I wasn't going to complain though.

"Miles here is majoring in animal sciences and I am majoring in journalism. I always wanted to write stories for Times magazine or Cosmo." The otter answered the question before continuing, "Oh, and Achi is majoring in engineering or something like that."

"Those are wonderful majors. I always wanted to go into teaching like Joseph's father but I never got the opportunity to go to college." My mom continued the conversation as she casually turned to check my dad's progress with the meal. From what I could see, they looked about finished.

Miles sat there and smiled to the otter and back at my mom. He just never seemed to stop smiling at people and it intrigued me. Why was he so happy? Was he hiding something? Why was I so interested in him? The questions kept going though my head and I could never find the answer. My mother seemed to notice my quizzical look.

"Something wrong, Honey?" She asked me.

"Just hungry is all." I gave out a little laugh as I avoided the gray wolf's gaze. I began to think about that warm smile of his. It was contagious that it me feel all warm fuzzy inside and want to return a smile. He would make a good friend, that was for certain. My paws fell to the space between my knees. I silently continued to listen to the conversation, it mostly being about my mom's past. Some about how she met my father - a story I had heard so many times before - and some about her high school life. The conversation didn't interest me at all, so I just stared at Miles the whole time out of boredom and hoped he wouldn't notice. I wanted to get into conversation the with him; he needed to see my witty side. I didn't want him to just think I was just some weird quiet kid, but I had no idea what to say. The pressure that was building in my chest didn't help either.

I gave in and stood up. "I'm going to get some water," I declared. The path to the kitchen door was an easy one because it got me away for a moment to calm down and think. I was just nervous. That's what I told myself. The water bottles were still on the table from when they were brought into the kitchen and put on the table. I reached my hand through the plastic of the wrapping and grabbed a bottle for myself before I returned to the back yard.

"Just in time." Achi winked at me as he passed with a plate full of hotdogs and my dad passed with a plate of hamburgers. "Eat up!"

I took back my place at the table across from Miles, looking at him before I grabbed the nearest hotdog to me. A nice big fat one with a beautiful bun was the one I grabbed. I reached for the ketchup and as I did so did Miles. My fingers wrapped around his for a split second before I yanked my hand back. I was blushing fiercely and my eyes darted back to my lap. I could feel his eyes on me as well as a few others but I didn't want to look up in fear that I would meet that strange wolf's eyes.

"Here ya go," I heard Miles say before he put the bottle of ketchup next to my plate. I could also hear the clanking of tableware as my family and our guests prepared their hotdogs or burgers. Finally mustering up the courage, I grabbed the ketchup and squirted some onto my own choice of food.

"You boys are such gentlemen." After the food had been eaten the conversation had moved inside as the sun was setting on our first day living in the new house and my mom had to once again compliment the three college students who had graced our house. The meal had been awkward to say the least but my father and mother made great acquaintance with our new neighbors while I mindlessly ate and tried to avoid the wolf. That same fur was now in our kitchen cleaning the little bit of dishes that we had used.

"You're a wonderful lady yourself Mrs. Clay." I honestly believed he was flirting with my mom then. That was gross. Why the hell would he do that? Those questions raced back into my head. What am I doing? Why do I feel this way?

"Oh thank you, Miles," My mom replied. She was now seated on the couch and was snuggled up against my dad who looked as though he was about to pass out. It had been a long day for all of us.

"Well, thank you again for the supper." Darius spoke as he opened the door to outside. The wolf came in from the kitchen who was then followed by Achi. They all congregated around the door as they said their last goodbyes.

"Any time, boys," my father slightly mumbled. The three walked out the door and waved as it shut and as it clicked closed, I let out a breath of relief. I was finally able to relax in my own home.

I said goodnight to my parents as I made my way down the hall to my new room in this new house. It had already begun to feel familiar to me even though I had only had it for a day. It may have been the plush carpet or even the calm colored walls but whatever it was, I could see myself living here and graduating here... and even falling in love here.
