Virtually Real Chapter 58: A Walk in the Woods
In the game the group starts their trek south through the forests; wile in the real world Prowl-Ar has to confront a UN council on the fact that a new sapient species now calls the Solar system it's home.
Chapter 58: A Walk in the Woods.
Characters:
Prowl-Ar: Captain of the Shadow Runners and very reluctant leader of the Furry Nation. Bull and Tiger Shifter
Jordan: Ship’s doctor. Wolf shifter.
Kyle: Second in command. Created from the character Red XIII he is also able to shift into eastern dragon, wolf, and lion forms.
Shock: Communications and diplomatic representative. Fox shifter.
Rider: Ship’s therapist. Sabretooth shifter.
Luca: Engineer and scientist responsible for bringing the synth race into reality. Known for an insatiable sexual appetite and being the first Sergal shifter.
Fenrir Ulfgar: Norse God now under the control of the Shadow Runners. Has turned his back on his destiny as devourer of the world for the love of his mate.
Raulin Ulfgar: A human Fenrir saved and fell in love with.
We spent several days outside the game. While there wasn't a lot to teach Fenrir he did have to be instructed on our high tech devices that surpassed current human development. He wasn't too happy to admit it, but he was able to see and hear though any dog or wolf allowing him to learn and experience a lot during his confinement.
Raulin, being two hundred years old, had also learned a great deal but I still put him through the standard crew education program. Wolf reported that as far as his scans could tell Raulin was in perfect health for a twenty year old human even if he claimed to be so old. Rider also did a mental evaluation on him and reported that out of everyone on the ship Raulin was probably the least disturbed.
He did ask for the ability to shift so he could be a better mate for Fenrir. I had to tell him I'd think about it. To be honest I was worried Fenrir would take over his body if I did. It's why I ordered that the collars remained on both of them.
Really it wasn't Raulin that concerned me it was Fenrir. I had a God, an actual freaking God, which I was now responsible for. His very existence would cause massive turmoil on Earth. It proved that the Norse Gods were real. The modern religions were already at each other’s throats and most of them worshipped the same God, how massive would the reaction be to the fact that the Pagan gods they had worked so hard to consign to mythology were real?
At least Fenrir was behaving. Well actually he was spending most of his time fawning over Raulin. Not that I blamed him. Only being physical with your mate once a month, and then only for the purpose of mating must have been torture. I laughed to myself wondering if my mates think I'm too much to deal with. After all I'm constantly, if unconsciously in contact with them at all times. Even making sure I'm in physical contact with at least one of them when we're together.
I'm not sure what Wolf told him, but he had been on his best behavior at all times. He admitted that while he didn't like the fact that we'd made him a slave, he was thankful that the Gods wouldn't hunt him down as long as he remained one. He did have one request, that he and Raulin be considered normal slaves and not pleasure slaves. He insisted he thought we were all exceedingly attractive, but Raulin was the only one he wanted to be with, sexually. We agreed, though for a couple of us it was reluctantly.
Now we were back in the game. Raulin was Rider's slave and Ulfgar was Wolf's. It seemed the Raider encampment was so busy with their revelry no one noticed Fenrir's transformations.
The Viking leader approached us the next morning. "Ulfgar, what did you do? It's one thing to lose one such as Raulin, however you are one of my best warriors."
"You know I've been watching over the boy since he lost his family. I hoped to bargain for his release and if that didn't work fight for him. Unfortunately they defeated me as easily as the boy. They truly are blessed by the Gods." Fenrir replied.
"This is not the God's will." The Leader growled.
"No, but it is done all the same. As long as your warriors do not attack us we will not take them as slaves. However, we are not passengers we will take our turn at the oars." I assured him.
"We need to head east along the coast for now. While we know time is important I have had a vision that our prey is moving south. We will follow for as long as the sea and rivers allow. You and your warriors can continue raiding as we go, however we cannot help you in that endeavor." Shock announced.
"And does the small one speak for you?" The Viking Leader asked me.
"He is our seer. I lead, but he is the one that sets our course."
The leader nodded. “It is good we will be able to continue to raid.”
We didn't get much chance to speak to each other after that. Most of our time was spent either rowing of resting. When the band went raiding we were always watched. Shock would draw symbols on the beach and watch as the waves washed them away or carve them into tree bark and set them on the fire. Basically acting like he was preforming some sort of divination.
We continued east but there were fewer raids. It wasn't long before we weren't going ashore at all. Eventually Shock announced we'd be turning south and following the next river to the inland sea. We landed that night at the mouth of the river.
"The Gods may be with you, but this is as far as we travel together. We are far into other clan's territory. We have had a good raiding season, however it will do our families no good if it is taken. So we part ways. Perhaps, if the Gods are still with you, you'll find another band familiar with this river. Ulfgar and Raulin, is there anyone you wish us to take messages back to?"
"I have no one that will miss me or even really knows I exist. I only ask that you send prayers to Odin to watch over Ulfgar and me." Raulin answered.
"I ask that you let the All Father know that when these chosen capture Fenrir, and I am sure they will, the Gods will never again have to fear the Great Wolf again." Fenrir said smiling at us.
"I look forward to hearing your story in Valhalla." The leader replied.
"It will have to be told by another. I doubt I will be carried up to such lofty heights, now that I am a slave."
"You travel to battle Fenrir. Even a slave who fights valiantly in such a conflict surely deserves to enter the warrior’s hall." The Viking said, slapping Fenrir on the back.
"May the Gods continue to watch over you and your party until you are all safely home." Fenrir said.
"There may be a way. Stay here a little longer. I need a place alone to make a request of the gods on your behalf." I didn't wait for a reply I simply walked into the forest.
I figured something like this would happen so I prepared in advance. I carefully pulled a Viking sword from my pouch. It was held by a black leather sheath and matching belt with silver medallions. "Shock if the illusion magic is still thick hit me with a fake lightning bolt. Just make sure it is an illusion and not the real thing." I asked telepathically. There was a flash of light followed by a loud clap of thunder. He really knew how to work the dramatic touches. I walked back out of the forest being careful to only touch the scabbard. "I present to you Iron Biter, a sword that can cut through any other weapon. A gift for your assisting us in our quest. Everyone will know that is your sword because you are the only one that can pull the sword from its sheath."
He took hold of the handle, coding the hidden genetic lock to his own DNA, and pulled the sword out. The meteoric steel glinted in the sunlight. We slipped into the forest as he stood captivated by the sword.
"You know, handing out weapons like that, is really close to the line to being considered a God?" Wolf said, quietly.
"That’s the reason for the lightning show to make it look like the sword was sent by Odin."
"So where to now?" Shock asked.
We all looked at him in confusion. “You’re the one that has been setting our course. Are you saying you’ve just been making it all up as we’ve gone along?” I asked.
“No, I'd planned on having our friends take us up river and eventually to the Black Sea. Now I'm not sure. There are several different routes e can take and don't worry I have maps right here." Shock tapped his temple and I really hoped he meant his headset and not his memory.
"You do realize most of our journey is going to be through the most dangerous forest ever known?" I asked.
"This isn't the Congo or the Amazon. This is Europe we're talking about." Shock scoffed.
"Yes, pre-industrial age. Almost every monster imaginable came out of this forest." Wolf added.
"Oh come on Tiger, how can you be afraid of this beautiful place? Besides you grew up and played in a forest."
"Shock, that was an alpine forest, in what was considered the new world."
"What's the difference?" He asked.
"It had wild magic, true but so long as you respected the spirits and were carful of the animals you were safe. Such places are energetic and ever changing. This is a temperate forest with deep roots in dark and hidden magic. In the fist if you run across an old woman in the woods she is likely a healer or guide out looking for herbs. In this forest she is likely to treat you nice until she leads you astray where she traps and eats you. This is the land of vampires, werewolves, witches and unnamed horrors."
"You don't need to fear any wolves. No wolf can challenge me." Fenrir said, confidently.
"Oh really?" Wolf said, glaring at the Great Wolf.
"Except you master Jordan. No one would challenge you. At least not twice, though I suggest we stay close to the river and hope we meet up with another raiding party."
"I'm telling you I can navigate us through this forest. As for your fears, I'm likely the weakest one here and I’m not afraid."
"Uh, hello Shock, Fenrir may be the one responsible for my long life but I'm still human." Raulin quickly pointed out.
"Okay so maybe I'm not the weakest, still you're a tiger, Jordan can be a wolf or a tiger, Rider is a sabretooth, Kyle is a powerful dragon, and Fenrir is a God. A freaking God, and you're scared of a little old lady that lures in children with a candy house?"
"To be fair to Tiger, The Gods don't travel through this forest. And for your own sake don't mention that individual again. Remember I'm even older than Tiger and I know those stories were made more acceptable for young audiences. What you may not know is the original recorders also cleaned the stories when they recorded them. Given the choice of traveling alone through this forest and being bound once again, I'd beg the gods to tie me up." Fenrir said, glancing around and actually showing fear for the first time.
I laughed nervously. "Even though I hate the idea we don't have a lot of choices here. I agree we follow the river and we stick together. Don't split up into groups less than three and constantly be on guard."
"You know, there are always other choices. We could set up a camp here until the portal can be opened." Rider pointed out.
"I suppose, but I would like to add an Anpu to our harem before leaving this realm." I replied.
"A what?" Shock asked.
"One of Anubis' black jackal warriors."
"Why not Anubis himself?" Wolf asked.
"As strange as this probably sounds, I don't want to piss off the Gods any more than we already have. Taking a low warrior slave in the game is different than insulting the real Anubis by enslaving his game avatar as we did Fenrir."
Shock glanced at Fenrir. “Shit, I keep forgetting that he’s the real Fenrir of myth and legend. This really does alter the way humans have viewed reality for centuries.”
"You know, if it isn't too much, there is one individual I'd also like to make my own, however it might upset a god. If we survive all the way to Greece, anyway." Wolf interrupted.
I nodded. “Sounds good, might as well make a clean sweep of irritating all the ancient gods. Who is it you want?”
“I’d rather not say just yet. I wouldn’t want,” he gestured at the sky, “anything to go wrong.”
I nodded in instant understanding.
"One last thing, Master, may I shift to a large wolf form? I'd like Raulin to ride on my back so I can keep him safe."
Jordan nodded, taking ahold of Fenrir's collar he stretched it as the wolf shifted and grew to the size of a horse. Shock also shifted and got Rider to carry him. Through our link I could tell he was still unhappy about our not trusting his navigation skills. As the others started walking I had a moment where I wondered if an anubian warrior was really worth this risk. Not that I had a choice, Wolf was committed to saving his next slave.

"Tiger, we've been following the river for a week now and we haven't passed any Vikings, or villages. Don't get me wrong, it's been peaceful but boring. At this pace we're never going to get to Greece, let alone Egypt."
"Shock-"
"Just hear me out. If we cut south now we can skirt the Carpathian Mountains cross the Transylvanian plateau and be in Greece in no time. Yes, I know it is rugged territory but it's not like we haven't crossed difficult spots before. We crossed the Alps in winter after all. Before you bring up Dracula, even if this is a mythological realm, that event is still centuries in the future."
"If it is a shorter route, my vote is with Shock.” Rider agreed.
"Jordan?" Shock asked.
"River. I want to get there as quickly as possible, but unlike all of you I grew up much closer. There are places man was never meant to go and that forest is one of them."
"Kyle?” Shock Continued.
"Tiger, we've faced giant serpents, ghosts, mountains, deserts, glaciers, and crossed two continents together. I know that was a game but it was real to me at the time. This is a game and I know it’s a game. I'm not scared to face whatever is out there with all of you at my side, so my vote is with Shock."
"That's three to one, no matter which way you vote the majority has spoken. Still, it comes down to what you decide." Shock asked.
"You’re forgetting two. They may be slaves but their opinion matters. Raulin what do you say?" I asked.
"Honestly I don't have a problem with cutting through. I've driven many of the back roads through the area over the years and-" Suddenly he covered his mouth.
"Raulin, what is your profession?" I asked.
"He's a human trafficker." Fenrir answered confidently.
"Don't tell them that!" Raulin yelled.
"Why not? You help people who are fleeing from persecution find a place where they can live safely." Fenrir said.
"Well yeah, but when you use that description it implies I'm doing it for profit and I haven’t done that for over a hundred years. Before you judge me let me explain. I help LGTBQ+ and furrys escape countries where they'll be killed. Normally I'd just transport them to a friendly country and then let them figure things out on their own. However, since you started opening embassies I've been leaving them at the closest one to where I picked them up. Anyway I've driven through this part of the continent many times and never saw anything to make me worry." Raulin explained.
"My vote is on the river. There is good reason the gods avoid this region." Fenrir stated.
"So the outcome hasn't changed." Shock pointed out.
I sighed, "Then we turn south."
"Yes! We’ll be in Greece in no time." Shock said, happily.
Somehow I really doubted that was going to be the case.
***
Within a day we came across an abandoned village. It looked like it had been raided. I had to admit after multiple raids along the river it was natural to build further back into the forest. Not that it helped this village. We didn't find anyone. No survivors; even more concerning, to me anyway, no remains. There was a road, well more of a trail, leading in the direction we were heading.
Shock pointed out that out that the survivors had probably retreated along the road after the raid. It was plausible, but I felt something. That feline instinct that someone or something was watching us.
"You feel it don't you?" I jumped at Wolf's whisper. "There is something here watching us. My tiger instincts are telling me to be ready." He glanced back at the rest of the team. “I’d never admit this to anyone else but my wolf instincts are telling me to tuck in my tail and run.”
"Fenrir, Raulin, and Shock seem unaffected, but Rider and I feel it too." Kyle whispered. "I think we may have made a mistake. You two were right, there is something in this forest."
"Hey Wolf? Why don't you walk closer to Fenrir, with Raulin and me?" Shock said happily, bouncing over like he didn't have a care in the world. "Maybe give our mates some room to spread out a bit. You know something, Tiger? I heard something ahead. Sounded like that time in the greenwood when we were out for a walk without our suits."
Wolf looked up at the canopy, as though he was checking the sky or talking to the Gods. He pitched his voice as though he was suggesting he thought it was going to rain, but said. "Spiders. Why does it always have to be fucking spiders?"
"I don't think that's what they have in mind." Shock laughed.
The look Wolf gave him even made me shiver. "Don't worry, unlike last time, we now have magic to assist-".
"Um, no we don't. Since we left the Raiding party our magic has been locked. It's like this forest drains the power out of us to keep for itself." Shock said sadly.
I ran my hand along the closest tree. It was damp Kyle would be able to use his fire breath without risking an inferno at least.
"Tiger, they’re gone. I can't hear them anymore. It's like they got a look at us and it scared them off." Shock said, in surprise.
"Everyone prepare yourselves, whatever is coming is powerful enough to scare a swarm of spiders." I warned.
"Giant spiders." Shock added. He gasped and then clutched his side where Wolf hit him.
"Shut up about those things."
"Don't worry, I'm probably the one that scared them off." Fenrir said, smugly. “They fall under Loki's domain, and though I don't have the best relationship with him his lower servants aren't going to mess with me. Don't worry Master Jordan, as long as I'm around you’ll never see another spider."
I'll admit in that moment I wanted to squish Fenrir like a spider.
"Love, don't be jealous. You know I love you, and Fenrir has made it very clear he is only interested in his mate." Wolf said telepathically.
"But I'm the one that promised to protect you from all spiders." I mentally whined.
"Now don't be like that, we both know you'd never let a spider get aboard the Runner anyway."
I decided it was probably for the best if I agreed with him, and hid the files and samples that would allow the evolver to create anthro-arachnids.
"While I'm still sure this is the right choice, I'd still like to find a village to spend the night in." Shock insisted moving to the front of the group again.
"That reminds me, human forms only when we might encounter people. That is especially true for Ulfgar and Jordan. The people in this forest are really serious in their fear of werewolves so even your real identity and Jordan's pet name are best not mentioned." I explained.
"What if we run into a werewolf though?" Shock asked.
"He or she will likely already know what we are from our scent alone." I said.
"Yeah, all of you have a strange scent in common." Fenrir said, causing all of us to blush brightly. "I meant a metallic chemical smell like you're all too clean, not . . . well not what you're thinking I meant."
Shock started to giggle.
"Oh, that is also very obvious as well, just not what I was talking about." Fenrir added, causing Shock to burst out laughing and the rest of us to chuckle nervously.
***
We decided to take a few days off from the game. After the near spider incident we agreed that some time was needed to de-stress. Not that life ever allowed that, but I knew how upsetting the thought of giant spiders could be for Jordan. I’d locked out the possibility of such encounters after the MAS game incident, but obviously the computer worked around that to make the threat real. I was just lucky that Fenrir had an explanation for the reason they disappeared otherwise I’d have had to admit to using a game cheat. I did edit the logs so that we didn’t have to encounter giant flesh eating slugs. Still I’d have gladly taken the slugs over this current challenge. At least the slugs had some redeeming features. I stared into the mirror. "Mahan, am I being stupid again?"
"Yes, however I don't see any way out of it."
"They're going to be pissed."
"There's no doubt about that." Mahan said, with a cruel chuckle.
"Captain, are you alright?" Rider asked as he entered the bedroom. "Kyle and Shock told me your emotions are all over the place making it impossible for them to know what you're feeling and Jordan said your thoughts are even more chaotic."
"You know how I sometimes do stupid things that put my life at risk?" I asked.
"Yes, and it's our job to make sure you don't do such things."
"I wish it was that simple. Mahan, please have everyone meet downstairs in the play room. I only want to have to explain this once."
"That sounds ominous." Rider said, as he followed me out of the bedroom, through the living room, and down the stairs to the kid's play room. Where everyone was waiting including Dash, Trace, Raulin, Nature, Tye, and Fenrir.
"Lee's keeping the other children entertained while we have the meeting." Dash said, as I looked at him.
I nodded and Rider moved past me taking a place with everyone else.
"Okay Tiger, what has you so upset?" Jordan asked.
I've got to appear before United Nations council on alien affairs. First to explain what we have planned for the colonies and our involvement with Mars declaring limited independence from Earth."
"You can video conference that. The colonies are safe refuges for furry and LGBTQ+ individuals that are being persecuted on Earth. If they have a problem with that they can stop being bigoted assholes." Shock stated.
"Mars declared independence? I don't see how that is possible. The research colony isn't self-sufficient. All Earth has to do is cut off supply shipments and the station shuts down." Jordan pointed out.
I sighed, "That was before they gained access to Marvin and the Runner owned portions of the base. Using the same matter generators we have plus raising the hydroponics and greenhouses up to the surface where they can make use of the sun makes it completely possible."
"Oh, so I guess I'm sort of responsible then. If I'd been more careful and hadn't gotten myself attacked." Jordan said, quietly.
"No, it was only a matter of time before those sections were discovered. It's not your fault, pup." Kyle said, putting an arm around Jordan.
"Second they are concerned about our AI systems and the synths."
"No! I've been studying current human culture. You can't let them have any say in my species development." Dash yelled.
"Don't worry, I agree with you. It may mean no synth will ever be able to visit Earth but they will have no say in your existence and independent culture. Once we get to a stabilization point in our colony populations I’ll set up an independent Synth Colony where your people are in charge."
"Okay, so we have to make an appearance-" Jordan started to say.
"No, I do. I'm not risking any of your lives."
"You don't get to make that decision." Jordan pointed out.
"Actually, as Captain of this ship and current leader of the Furry Nation, I do. I'm sorry love, but there is no argument you can make that will change my mind. Especially for you, Dash, and the babies you're carrying."
"He's right, you two are staying here. However, Shock and I-"
“Have to stay here as well. Kyle, in my absence you are the Captain. I'm only taking a single guard with me on this trip. Fenrir, you'll be acting as my bodyguard."
"Oh no you don't, my mate is staying right here." Raulin yelled.
"You've also forgotten something very important." Tye added. "In our story you promised that if you went on any dangerous missions you'd take either me or Trace with you. Even though it was your character, we are holding you to that promise."
"No, you're not getting it. The colonies are giant targets. If they don't listen to reason we can't protect both of them. If it comes down to those we've saved and those still on Earth . . . I'll free Fenrir."
I flinched as something hit me in the chest.
"You mean like this?" Fenrir asked, as I stared at his collar on the floor. "I told you I've changed. I don't give a damn what the gods or fates intended for me. I wear the collar as a symbol of my dedication to remaining good not because you have me contained. Sure I'll go with you as your body guard, after all as a god I can always return here without a ship. Just know that I will not be doing anything other than protecting your life."
"When?" I asked in confusion.
"When I spoke with him alone." Jordan explained. "I had him swear loyalty to the Shadow Runners on his Godhood and Raulin's life. The first was a formality, in case the gods decided to interfere and the second because I knew that oath was more binding than any chain or collar."
"Why-"
"Why did I continue to wear the collar? Like I said as a symbol of my dedication."
"Actually, that might not be entirely true. It might be my fault." Raulin said. "I sort of mentioned that he's really sexy when he has only his collar on. His my big puppy." Raulin blushed and I could tell that Fenrir was also embarrassed.
"Okay! I don't need to hear any more." I'd picked up the collar, but I quickly tossed it back to Fenrir. I was getting more than enough sex without needing to hear about Raulin and Fenrir's kinks.
"I think I speak for all of us when I tell you I hate this, but if you take Fenrir to keep you safe and Trace to keep you from doing anything stupid, it should be alright. Just one more thing, and I really, really hate saying this; I think you should take Luca with you as well. As the one that actually brought the first Synth's to life you're going to need his expertise." Shock said.
"I'd suggest he have one of his synths with him, just to be sure his needs are taken care of. It wouldn’t be very good if Fenrir or Trace killed him for getting overly horny from being around three such sexy men." Tye said, with a very large grin.
"No one can tempt me away from my pup." Fenrir growled.
"I admit we had some fun times, but you know Luca . . . He was in it for sex and fun, not a relationship. I won't be tempted, again."
"Tiger?" Jordan asked.
I laughed. "Do you really have to ask? Sure Luca is cute, but I'm not getting sexually involved with him. All of you keep me sexually fulfilled all the time. Just the thought of how horny our Sergal is, most of the time, leaves me exhausted."
"Fine, but you make sure that he knows if he so much as touches you inappropriately we'll tie him up and he'll be a bottom slave for all of us for a month." Shock stated.
"So, when is the meeting?" Fenrir asked.
"Tomorrow, I- I wanted to be sure there was enough time for everyone to get used to the idea, rather than just taking off and apologizing later. Like I usually do."
Fenrir laughed, "See us old dogs and cats can learn to be better than we used to be."
I just grinned. I hadn't really thought about it until that moment, but for the first time in hundreds of years I wasn't the oldest person in the room. It felt kind of nice knowing that.

As I activated the door chime to Luca's office I wondered if I should have given Fenrir any sort of warning. Trace, of course, likely knew what to expect."
"Enter." A feminine voice said, as the door slid open. A Synth was waiting for us. "Good morning Lord Prowl-Ar. Master Kyle let us know you were coming. Master Luca will be ready momentarily. I am Ampre, Master Luca's secretary and assistant with all things Synth related. I'll be joining you. After all, if my people’s future is to be decided then we should have a representative present."
"I guess that will be alright. Are you prepared for weapons use?" I asked.
"No, I'm fully devoted to lab and book keeping. I have no upgrades for combat, or for pleasure, despite Master Luca's reputation. Earlier I did add in a training package for non-violent self-defense, though as I understand it Master Luca has plenty of self-defense training."
"Her choice, unfortunately. Though I have requested she install at least a few defensive upgrades." Luca said, as he entered from a side room. "Hey Trace, ready for a bit more fun?"
"Not even if you leaned over the desk, raised your tail, and begged me to take you. I'm happy and satisfied with my mates."
"And who is this amazing specimen? Prowl-Ar, have you taken another man off the availability list?" Luca asked as he eyed up Fenrir.
"Little Sergal, I was never on the availability list. Not for you, or for Prowl-Ar. I have my own mate and he's my everything. Heh, I even gave up my destiny for him."
"Luca, this is Fenrir Ulfgar, the newest member of the Shadow Runner crew."
"Replacing Me and the Dragon already then? Nice to meet you Fenrir. So tell me, has he used the 'I'm so old' card to get you to do anything yet?"
Fenrir and I looked at each other and then burst out laughing.
"I don't get it. What's so funny?" Luca asked.
"Luca doesn't the name Fenrir mean anything to you?" Trace asked.
"So he's named after the Viking wolf god, so what?"
"I am Fenrir, son of Loki, devourer of the world."
"Uh huh, so what movie or game did Prowl-Ar pull you from before using the evolver to make you real?"
"Luca, I didn't use the evolver. See Wolf's collar around his neck? That is the new binding that keeps him from assuming his godly form and kick starting Ragnarok."
"Ok, you go on believing that, with respect to all the other religions, there is just one God that created everything. The other are just people pretending to be gods or stories created to explain what they didn’t understand at the time.”
"Your God is just as real, I won’t deny that, but I and the other Gods don't talk about him. He and his followers don’t like us very much."
"Are you ready?" I asked in order to change the topic.
"Yes, as much as I can be anyway. If I understand correctly someone in the U.N. is upset that humans are no longer the only sapient race in existence? As if we, as shifters, aren’t as far removed from humans as the synths are."
"Let's not stir things up more than we already have, with talk about Gods and shifters on this mission." I said, as we headed out.
***
I actually found it rather funny how easily we entered the building. Of course we were all using holographic masks and our ID badges were as real as any other thanks to Mahan making sure our covers were in the approved database.
Last time we made an entrance, this time they didn't know we were coming. With the map Mahan provided we made our way to the correct conference room. We were early enough that we would be the first to enter. We got settled and everyone, except myself, activated full cloaking before more delegates entered. If Mahan was correct this was to be the first meeting of the council on extra-terrestrial affairs so it wasn't surprising no one really paid much attention to me, as they tried to organize themselves. There were eight others, from the pins on their suits they were from France, England, United States, Germany, Egypt, Brazil, Mexico, and India.
"Good afternoon representatives. As you know we have been appointed to discuss how best to deal with our alien problem." The head of the committee, the American, started.
"If my translation is even close to what you just said I must object to the term ‘problem aliens’." The French member objected.
"Oh sure, you don't have a problem since your country is probably getting nice kickbacks for being so friendly with them." the committee leader shot back.
"What is this back kicking?" I asked, trying to derail the argument.
"Haven't you heard?" The representative from India asked, "It seems France, Japan, and Australia are getting preferential treatment by the aliens."
"I strongly object! Yes, our economy is doing well but it is from the added business provided by those staying on holiday in our country, where they are safe from persecution, until they can immigrate. We receive no money from the Shadow Runners. As far as we've been able to ascertain they don't even use money the way we do." The French speaker explained.
"Enough. Others can deal with financial concerns. Our job is to-" The Brazilian started.
"Classify them as non-human so whatever action is taken won't reflect badly on our countries?" I asked.
"Our countries and the world, but essentially that is it exactly. Right, our first order of business is the rebellion on the United Nation's Mars Research colony. No one here can say the aliens weren't directly responsible."
“Can we at least agree to refer to them as furrys, as they call themselves? They did originate from Earth after all.” I asked.
“Are they though? From what we’ve found only Luca and Jordan were born on Earth and even they are suspect.”
"How do you come to that conclusion? From the reports I've seen they saved the French scientist, Jordan after he was attacked, also leading to the return of the three men to Earth for attempted murder charges. The next time they took an Italian scientist, Luca. Then there is the young lady Rin from Japan, and we all know of Shock Fox.” The Indian representative pointed out.
“The Young lady is only sixteen and doesn’t count and the individual known as Shock Fox is male. Everyone seems to forget that the real Video Fox was a female pretending to be male.”
I decided not to get into that argument. If the American representative wanted to be that stupid nothing I could do or say could change that.
“Regardless, my point is, if anything, you'd think Mars would want a closer relationship with Earth. After all the only thing the Shadow Runners have done is embarrass them." The Indian representative explained.
"As we all know the aliens have been supplying the research colony-"
"Supplies from here on Earth, paid for by our individual countries. You're just upset because you banned entry to the United States so you no longer share a monopoly on scientific research in space. Lord Nightiger is-"
"Lord Nightiger?" I interrupted the British representative, "I didn't think you handed that title out so callously."
"We do not. An honorary knighthood would have been bestowed upon him for extraordinary services to the realm when he saved the planet. However that takes time and research. As it turns out, that research led to the fact that he was knighted over six hundred years ago. Fortunately we still keep physical records otherwise he likely would have erased it. According to our laws should Sir Nightiger visit the United Kingdom he will be treated as a citizen of the realm. I use the term Lord in this case as that title was issued to him along with the donation of properties for multiple embassies to be built in the United Kingdom, as negotiated by Sir Kelly Dafox."
Over six hundred years ago? What the hell had I been doing at the time? I had a vague notion of being part of a group that was awarded for something or other, I guess I could have been given an honorary title. I'd have to ask Mahan about it, but it seemed we could add Britain to our list of true supporters. Still, I’d be having words with “Sir Shock” when I got back to the ship.
"Well good for you. However that was six hundred years ago. Don't tell me you're one of those fools that believes his claims about being immortal." The American sneered.
"Have you watched the way he treats others? I, like so many others watched his game. He was in a world where he could be and do anything, yet he would treat his enemies like friends and his friends like family. In his dealings with Earth he has always been more worried about the people than himself. He sees people in pain and he helps them with no thought of himself. I do not understand why the Government of the United States keeps trying to make him seem like a villain." The Indian representative pointed out.
"If I might interject, the current topic is Martian Independence. I don't see it as a problem. Let's face facts our nations were getting very little in return for the resources being expended. Last year A committee was formed to decide whether it was time to shut down the station or not. I say let them go off and do their own thing. The colony will just fall apart as it has done in the past. If the scientists there now want to try and make a go of it I say leave them to it. It just means our countries don’t have to continue paying to sustain it any longer. If the furry aliens want to help them then they can pay for it." The representative from Mexico stated.
I had to agree since it was the outcome I wanted, but I wasn’t happy with the way Mars was being written off as a failed project, again.
"Okay, so the next topic we need to discuss are the kidnappings."
"What kidnappings?" I asked in surprise. I’d made sure we were very careful that we only allowed adults to immigrate sure they brought their children with them but that wasn’t kidnapping. The only thing that came close was Rin and we had made that right with the Japanese government.
"The thousands of youth with the delusion that they are animals. They need counseling and re-introduction to normalcy, not communes and cults."
"This is news to me as well. From all reports the only underage youth taken in was Rin Nightiger, and she was adopted by Prowl-Ar after her own parents put her out on the streets." The German representative spoke up.
“Plus we all know about your brain-washing attempts to make kids normal. I remind you your country has been censured in the past on this topic so I suggest you have some strong evidence other than parents allowing their LGBTQ+ or Furry children immigrate with permission.”
"They are kidnapped hundreds of teens from the United States!"
"Oh, that's right, you still see sixteen and seventeen year olds as property of their parents. The Furry Nation recognizes them as adults." I said accusatorily. The majority of the delegates seemed to nod at my assessment.
“Not entirely true. As of two months ago the past new legislation classifying adulthood to start at twenty-one and created the sub-adult classification for eighteen to twenty-one. The American populace are currently in an uproar over this and we’re having to deal with massive illegal immigration into our country of those trying to escape and eventually travel to ‘safe’ nations.” The Mexican representative informed us.
"We've also gotten word that they've either abducted or trafficked infants." The American yelled.
"If the representative from the United States would watch Shock Fox's update videos she would know more than second hand rumors. Yes, they currently have six infants. However they are the biological parents." I quickly pointed out.
"And how do you explain a bunch of gay men having biological children?"
"I can answer that one. The Shadow Runner Members Jordan Nightiger and Nature Wolf, altered themselves to have both male and female reproductive organs. Since giving birth Nature Wolf has returned to being fully male while Jordan Nightiger plans to have more children." The French representative stated.
"How do you know all that?" I asked in surprise. Shock wasn’t supposed to release such a detailed report on the kids.
"As you know Jordan Nightiger is a French citizen and he filed all the necessary paper work to be sure his children also have citizenship. He was quite detailed and we were quite happy to grant his request."
I wondered if my pup was going to let me know but it just slipped his mind. I hoped he knew I didn't mind. It was good to know the kids would have a place on Earth to call home.
"Sorry love, I figured it wasn't a big deal. I know you didn’t want me there but I’m still listening in. you’re doing a really good job of making the American look extra stupid.”
"That's fine, my chiot. Though I really don’t have to do anything. She’s doing splendidly on her own." I thought back to him.
"Another atrocity to add to their list of deviant behavior. Like the fact they're creating a new robotic race to replace humans. Even though artificial intelligence rules, set by the world court, I might add, are very specific."
"Synthetic, not robotic." I corrected.
"What?" The American asked in confusion.
"Robotic implies they are created on an assembly line and their A.I. software is uploaded. A Synth mind has to be cultivates and grown the same as a humans. True, it is at a much greater pace than a human's and it can be enhanced with software, but each synth is an individual. Further they reproduce similar to how biological entities reproduce. In fact they can procreate with humans, though the resulting child will always be Synth they still have characteristics from both parents." I explained.
"Wait, what nation do you represent?" The Brazilian quickly asked. “That is more information that has been reported, even by Sock Fox.”
"You didn't think the Furry Nation wouldn't be represented here did you?” I asked. “Are there any other questions about our nation?"
The American glared at me. "These Synths, you act like they are a life form but-"
"I'll have you know it isn't just an act. We might be composed of synthetic parts, but we are most definitely alive. It is no different than one of you humans with an artificial organ." Ampre said, dropping her cloaking field.
Honestly I was surprised Luca's secretary was the first to break cover and that they’d all remained quiet this long.
"It may seem alien to you but we feel pain and emotions just like you do. Right now I'm so mad I could break something, but I'm not going to because I also have self-restraint."
"Someone call security!" The American yelled.
"Lot of good that will do you." Luca said, breaking cover as well. "Her visor is blast proof carbon composite. The armor is titanium her synthetic skin is also micro weave mail and I'm not even going to go into her weapons modules. Trust me she takes her job of being my secretary and bodyguard far too seriously." He lied.
"Who are you?" The Brazilian asked looking Luca over in a way that I could only classify as lasciviously. I only hoped Luca hadn’t noticed.
"I'm sorry, you don't recognize me? I'm Luca, though considering your colleague’s attitude and overall lack of intelligence you probably think of me as the Shadow Runner's Mad Scientist. I'm the one that built the first Synths. I figured if you had any questions I or my secretary would be the best ones to answer them." Luca smiled returning the Brazilians look causing him to blush.
”I beg any god listening, please let me get through this meeting without those two going at it like wild animals in heat.” I thought as I heard several whispers amounting to "More like sex mad scientist." And more worrying a couple more of them saying "Damn, he's hot." I swear I was going to have to see if he had altered his body chemistry to be more attractive to humans at some point.
"So you're the one responsible for creating these abominations?" The American member growled looking ready to kill rather than submit to Luca’s charms.
"No, I assembled the first few and helped nurture their AI, but I didn't create them. From the information Prowl-Ar provided, they were created by a furry in twentieth century, I just made them real. Actually that makes me sound uncaring. I assure you I care for the synths and all of my creations. I’m proud of what they have achieved so far and look forward to seeing how they develop in the future."
"Vader-San was the name the Synth creator went by. It's really too bad it has taken so long to bring his creations to life." I supplied.
“Not that you care, but we do honor our creator’s spirit. We do not venerate him, though, if you were wondering about Synth religious practices.” Ampre added.
Luca nodded, "Currently I'm working on a new project that blends biological and Synth together in order to make the protogen species a reality."
I felt like screaming, “why is it that no one thought I might need to know important things like that?” but I just smiled like I knew all along.
"Please calm down I really don’t want to have to deal with these people, they’d probably give me indigestion."
"Fenrir? Why can I hear you? I haven’t given you a gem shard yet." I thought back to him.
"You shouldn't be able to. I'm only able to communicate like this to wolves and Raulin since I've placed a portion of my power in him. I haven’t and have no intention of doing that with you."
"No, it makes sense. When I created my shifter form I blended both tiger and wolf DNA to achieve the traits I was looking for. I guess there is enough Wolf in me so I can hear you."
"Luca! No this isn't the time for things like that." I yelled, as I noticed several delegates trying to give him their numbers as he started to move toward the Brazilian representative.
"Is it my fault they want no discuss my research in private, later?" Luca insisted as he pocketed a piece of paper he’d gotten from the representative.
"So be it. If all of you are so weak you can't do anything I'll go get security myself." The American representative huffed.
"Sit down and shut up or I'll rip your empty head off and use it as a toilet." Trace said, appearing directly in front of her.
"Everyone SIT!” I ordered. I admit I may have put a little more than a small amount of power into the command seeing as everyone, except Trace immediately sat. In a chair, on the table, even on the floor. Wherever they had been they sat. Ampre and Fenrir as well and they should have been immune like Trace. I rolled my eyes as Luca rested the back of his head against the Brazilian’s thigh and grinned at me.
"Damn, I'm glad you gave me your immunity to mental manipulation. Still don't you think you over did it just a little there?" Trace asked through the gem.
"You! You controlled our minds!" The American yelled, making Trace laugh since she was facing his crotch.
"Everyone, please return to your seats." I said as politely as I could.
"You did it again. You're a demon!" She yelled, as Trace stepped back so she could get up.
I rolled my eyes as everyone, not seated in a chair returned to their places. Well, except for Luca, and it seemed he was happy where he was. "No, I gave an order and because every one of you sees me, even if it is subconsciously, as more powerful you obeyed of your own free will." I said.
"Yes, before any of you listening protest I did use my powers, but they don't need to know that. Honestly I didn't expect Fenrir or Luca's secretary to obey the order." I said, mentally.
"And Trace?" Fenrir asked.
"He's genetically immune to mental manipulation, just as I am. Besides, he almost never follows any order I give him." Trace grinned at me and gave a thumbs up.
"Right." Fenrir replied
I could hear the disbelief in his thoughts. “Jordan is a special case.” I was quick to point out.
"Lord Nightiger, what is it you intend to do with us?" The representative from India asked.
"Nothing, I only came here to represent my people, including the synths. That's why I brought Luca and his secretary. In case you needed a scientific explanation or living proof."
"And the other two?" the British representative asked.
"My son Trace and my bodyguard Fenrir. Fenrir is my bodyguard so his role is self-explanatory and Trace is here because I made a promise to him that if I was going to do anything foolish I'd have him or Tye with me since I wouldn't risk their lives."
"What about your own?" The Brazilian asked.
"I'm mated to a dragon, sabretooth, wolf, fox, and synth. I also have eight kids my life is in a constant state of danger."
"Yeah, like any one of them would hurt you. At least not physically or on purpose." Trace blurted out.
"You only have yourself to blame for that. How many of those abominations are there?" The U.S. representative spat.
Well, let’s see. There is myself, of course, plus Kyle and Shock. Then Wolf, Rider, Luca, Vexy, Kohan, Trace, Tye, Rin, and Frost. Then there is one more that knows he can shift, two that have the capacity but don't know it, and of course any of our children will have the potential, but we won't know for sure until the reach puberty. So currently around twenty three, I think."
"Lord Nightiger I think you forgot to include me and you said you are considering allowing Raulin to become a shifter as well." Fenrir reminded me.
"Oh, right, sorry about that."
"And how many synths are there?" She continued
"Less than a hundred but more than twenty. I don’t see as you need to know exact numbers." Luca lied, finally getting to his feet in order to glare at the woman.
I knew for a fact there were only five synths on the colony, two with Vexy's expedition, plus Lee and Dash, even counting my future child with Dash that was only ten.
"And I suppose you sent some with your dragon on his mission to Alpha Centauri to ensure they couldn't be completely eliminated."
Wait, did any of us release information on Vexy's mission? I'd have to check with Mahan. I'd hate to think we had a spy in the group.
"That is correct. I specifically sent a pair with them. They also had orders to collect patterns from all members of their crew should they need genetic information for procreation. Considering the kobold’s habits I observed, that should have been a fairly easy task." Luca explained.
"Kobolds? You created a fantasy race?"
Sometimes I wondered if Luca revealed things just to make my life more difficult. No one knew Raid, Shadow, and Legend were more than game characters. "I can turn a biological female into a biological male, turn myself into a shifter, bring a game character to life, and you have a hard time believing I can create other races? Biological beings are easy. Turning a robot into a biological was much harder but that groundwork made it possible for Luca to take the next step and create the Synths." I explained.
"Give life to, not create. As previously discussed I didn't create them." Luca reminded me.
"Not to agree with our United States colleague, but do you know how many laws and rules you are breaking?" The German Representative asked.
"Earth rules. None of that work takes place on Earth so those rules don’t apply." I pointed out.
"This is a human solar system so-" He started.
Luca laughed, "Point of fact, this is now the birth system of humans, kobolds, synths and shifters. It's a little late for you to try and argue that point. We may not be a majority but we do exist." Luca stated.
The room was quiet as everyone seemed to take in that information.
"You're all godless abominations who should be sent to hell." The American yelled.
I felt Fenrir grip my shoulder "Let me handle this."
"Don't." I relied.
"Oh, like you know anything. You're just some over muscled meat head that can't really think. Good for being a guard or heavy labor and that’s probably it." She scoffed.
"In point of fact I am the Shadow Runners religious guide. Theology is something I have a large investment in. While I can't speak for everyone in our party, as I've only just met Luca, I can say that the only one that could be considered 'godless' is Ampre, since Synths don't feel the need to worship anyone, yet as she has said they do honor their creator so they do have a sense of spiritualism. Just a wild guess but I bet you don't even know the name of the god you worship."
"Jesus Christ."
I really couldn’t tell if she meant it as an answer or if she was swearing at the thought of Fenrir being out spiritual advisor.
Fenrir rolled his eyes, "I admit he has a fair amount of power, but I should point out as the son of a god and a mortal he is only a demi-god. I was talking about his father."
"Everyone knows it's God."
"In point if fact it is not. The three most common that he uses are Jehovah, Yahweh, and Allah. Now for the big question do you know how he became a God?"
Luca glared at Fenrir. "He was always God."
"In a sense, but no one is a god until he chooses to be. To be a god you need two things, one is to be touched by divinity and secondly to be worshiped by others. The second is easy enough to come by. If being worshiped was all it took there would be billions of gods around by now. It also takes being touched by the divine. That is not so easily obtained. Often it requires an existing god to willingly impart a portion of his, her, or its power into a mortal. For example, let's take Captain Nightiger, is he a God?"
"No, most certainly not." I answered.
"So sure are you? You're worshipped by millions possibly billions already. So now all it would take for you to become a god was if some current god was to share his power with you. Like a god of death for example. All that’s left is for you to start thinking of yourself as a god and then Prowl-Ar here would be a god.” Fenrir looked around at the group. "However there are two other minor things, as a mortal he would have to die and be resurrected or resurrect himself and, as I said he’d have to want to be a god."
"And just what does any of that have to do with this meeting?" The French representative asked.
"My point is everyone is different and just because they don't worship the same God as you." He pointed at the U.S. representative, "It doesn't make them Godless, abominations, or any of the other slurs you’ve been throwing around. Also I'm telling you that furrys have always been a part of human nature. The first human that held antlers to his head and danced around a campfire to improve the tribe’s hunt was also the world's first furry."
"One last thing, as this meeting is putting a lot of mental stress on my father, Mahan is always watching. If any country attempts the genocide of furrys my brother and I will deploy a gene altering virus that will bring about the extinction of the human race." Trace growled.
"You can't do that!" rang out from multiple representatives.
"Let me finish. The virus will change everyone into anthro-animals, or furrys if you prefer, leaving only those of us that are shifters able to become human ever again. I just thought you should all know that while having any more little meetings about what to do about furrys."
I shook my head and headed for the door. It wouldn't be productive to stick around after such an ultimatum. Still, as far as I knew it was an empty threat. At least I hoped it was an empty threat. I knew Trace and Tye would do it if pushed whether I tried to stop them or not. What I wasn’t sure about was whether they had such a virus at their disposal.
“I’ll be sure to look into it.” Wolf informed me. Somehow that wasn’t reassuring.

I walked into my quarters and flopped onto the couch. The trip back was pretty quiet. Just cordial goodbyes to Luca and Ampre at the station. They decided to catch a shuttle out to the colony. Somehow I figured Luca was going to slip back down to Earth for some fun but that was up to him. After arriving back here on the ship Trace and Fenrir were quick to head back to their quarters while I locked down the shuttle. To be honest I was glad they did. I didn't want to talk to anyone. I just . . . to be honest, I sort of wanted to jump back in time and change things. Maybe go back far enough to divert the comet that would have destroyed Earth so that I wouldn't have revealed myself to the world.
Not that I'd do something so stupid. I'm selfish and doing that would mean giving up everyone except Kyle. Maybe I should jump back to Grimm's creation and have him get rid of me then rather than putting me in suspended animation. No, Mahan would still bring me back eventually.
Perhaps going back and preventing Mahan making contact with me. Sure I'd die alone feeling unloved but there wouldn't be any humans around more than a couple hundred years anyway.
"Okay, stop it right now. I won't have you thinking such self-destructive thoughts on my watch."
I glanced up. It seemed Jordan had come in without me noticing.
"Both Trace and Fenrir came to my lab insisting that you were feeling really depressed after your trip and they thought I should come make sure you don't hurt yourself." Jordan sat down and leaned back against me with his head against my chest. "So tell your chiot what's really bothering you."
I wrapped my arms around him. "All I want to do is make things better for as many people as possible, but everything I do just makes things worse. Our people are hated and attacked so I set up the colonies as a safe place to live, but that's still not good enough for the haters. I- I just don't know why I keep trying. We have the colonies now, and despite the fact all of you are hiding any problem reports from me, things seem to be going rather well. So why do I care what the assholes on Earth think? Why do I keep trying to help them?"
"Because that's just who you are. You know despite how much hate is being hurled there are many more that don't speak up because they feel that no one will listen to them. No one cares enough to speak for them. But you know they're there. You feel their pain and you keep trying to make things better, for them. Trust me, one day, far off in the future when we've found a quiet system to retire to for the rest of eternity, they will remember who you are, and I know you hate the thought, they may even think of you as a god."
"You're just saying that because you love me."
"No, I'm saying it because it's true; and because I love my Daddy Tiger."
"I love you my wolf pup." I'm not sure how long we just lay there, together, quietly before we fell asleep.
***
I was feeling good. We were still in the dark forest but the feelings of dread were gone. The last two days had been quite relaxing just following the road we were on. Listening to the birds sing and even the wolves howling to each other at night. It probably helped that most of us understood what the howls meant. Mostly "I am here where are you?" and once or twice the packs singing about how wonderful the world seemed.
"Happy now?" Shock asked. "We've reached a village, though I bet we'd be better off sleeping out here in the forest from the looks of it."
The forest around the village had been cleared for crops maybe half a kilometer at the widest point and right in the middle was the town, ringed by a wooden wall.
"This isn't right. We're too far away from the river for raiders." Fenrir stated.
"The tops of the posts are pointed and there are spikes at the base of the wall. They are trying to keep something or someone out." Rider added.
Spread through the field were bundles of straw. That started major alarm bells in my head. It wasn't right, not for spring. The fields should be tilled and in the process of being planted. "Everyone, stick to human form. No mention of gods, shifting, or magic of any form. Something has these people scared and considering their defenses staying out in this area after dark isn't something we're going to want to do."
We slowly approached the gate. "Hold and identify yourselves."
"I am Prowl-Ar, an adventurer and these are my traveling companions."
"You are a strange group. You have two Raiders with you."
"Yes, Fenrir and Raulin. They were captured by a rival raider band and sold to us as slaves."
"You also have two Roman legionnaires."
"Yes, Kyle and Shock, along with two warriors from Gaul, Rider and Jordan." I caught myself before I could say wolf. In these woods that would be a very bad omen. "Sorry chiot." I thought to him.
"Completely understandable, my tiger."
"And how do you explain so many enemies being together?"
"They all have the same urge as I do. To go out and see the world and all it has to offer. All we ask is a place to spend the night. We have coin and some small skills to pay."
"Wait there, we’ll summon the Knight Captain." The guard yelled excitedly.
"Crap, I get the feeling our bill is going to be monster hunting." I muttered.
"I'm ready, as long as it isn't spiders." Jordan said, giving a couple of shadow punches with his tonfas.
"If it is spiders I'll crush them all before they can get close to my puppy." Rider added.
I glared at him and had to remind myself that this wasn't the time to fight over which one of us had more right to call him "my puppy", even though I knew it was me.
"Oh are my big daddy tigers going to fight over me?" Wolf asked sweetly. "Just remember good kitties share their puppy or he'll spend all his time with Daddy dragon and none with them." He added with a tone so cold I was worried we'd be accused of being witches and using ice magic.
"Yes, chiot we'll be good." Rider and I replied simultaneously.
It didn't take long for the "Captain" to appear. He was very out of place, wearing silver and white armor with gold accents. He was well built and rather attractive but at the same time he looked like a pompous ass that spent all his time in some noble mansion or king's court. "Welcome adventurers! I'm pleased you have accepted my request for aid. I was beginning to fear the messenger I sent didn't get through." He said, as he ushered us through the small simple village to the largest structure. “Please do not judge by the squalor and peasants I has been difficult keeping the town going with so many having been taken. Unfortunately rather than village maintenance most of the building efforts went into erecting the walls leaving me with just the church to live in for now."
"It is a rather well cared for structure. All of the craft that went into carving the wood must have taken-" Fenrir started.
"Oh that, yes as soon as the monster problem has been dealt with I'll have all those pagan images removed. The priest called for it to be done immediately, but he was one of the first to be taken. Fortunately he was able to consecrate the building so I am safe from the monsters as long as I remain within at night."
"What sort of monsters are we supposed to be dealing with?" Shock asked.
"It was all in the request I sent. Every night the town is attacked by demon wolves. After the priest and all of my troops were taken I requested holy warriors to come and kill them all."
"Ah, well the last town we visited was raided and there wasn't much left. That was back along the Northern coast."
"You- you've come through the forest from the North? You must be incredibly strong! Please, please save me. I am a holy knight sent here leading a guard unit to protect the priest as he converted the pagans. I am the only one left. Even if it is my duty, I don't want to die. The beasts, they howl and make the most ungodly noises all night long. Every night I kneel before the alter and pray for the souls of my comrades. And fight the demonic thoughts that fill my head. If the beasts are not killed I know they will come for me."
"We will need to gather information from the villagers before we make a decision." I started.
"They'll tell you nothing. They tell me what I hear is simply the joyful howling of the wolves, If I just listen to them I’ll understand that they are calling for me and they only want me to be happy, but I know better."
"Just the same if we are to hunt these monsters we must learn more about them. However, I suggest you continue as you have and remain inside the church where you will be safe."
"Thank you! Oh thank you so much."
I closed the doors as the holy knight knelt once again before the alter to pray.
"Yep, he's nuts." Shock said, as he shook his head.
"Are you so sure?" Fenrir asked. "That church, it may have been consecrated by his priest but it didn't take. That building is still mine. I also did a check and there is only one human in this town not wolf touched and that's your mad knight." Fenrir informed us.
I slowly exhaled. "Werewolves."
"Loup-garou?" Jordan laughed. "Then we have nothing to fear."
"No, wolf touched. None in the village can shift but they have been intimate with such creatures, likely in their human forms. A few of the children may turn when they come of age. There is . . . a great lack of actual human form wolves here. I would guess they are out in the forest. Likely in hiding until the village is safe to return to."
I glanced up, we had maybe an hour until sunset. "Raulin and Shock, I want you two inside the church keeping an eye on the nutty knight. I don't want him to suddenly find his faith and going on a killing spree.
"Will it be safe in there?" Raulin asked.
"Pup, I told you this building is dedicated to me. There is no place you could be safer."
"Kyle and Rider, you’re to keep the villagers out, should they decide it's time to get rid of their problem knight, feel free to shift if you need to. Oh and everyone magic is back on the table."
"And what will you be doing?" Kyle asked.
"I'm going out to speak with the real leader of this village and just to be safe I'm taking Fenrir and Wolf as protection."
"Just don't . . ." Kyle trailed off.
"Don't what?" I asked.
"Don't enslave all of them. Remember most of them probably already have family here in the village." He answered.
I grinned and nodded. "I'll do my best to remember."
***
We reached the edge of the fields just as the sun set. I looked back at the village. A glow rose from inside the walls. Were they celebrating, rioting, or readying themselves for an attack? Above the moon was full and bright. I hadn't realized it was the night of the full moon. Suddenly my plan seemed extra stupid.
"Don’t worry, Tiger. You've got your own loup-garou to protect you and the god of wolves to back me up. We'll be fine. I feel so excited."
"Master, calm yourself. As I understand it you're not the same as the creatures we'll be facing. Don't let the moon magic here consume you."
"Do you know how many moons Saturn has?"
"What?" Fenrir asked in confusion.
"This is a game and that moon is a holographic projection. We are nowhere near the Earth's moon. The closest ones are orbiting Saturn. So I'm not going to be consumed by moon magic."
I stepped back. That was rather out of character.
"I know this is a game however it is a very realistic simulation. The air is incredibly thick with wolf scent. Anger, fear, arousal, you name it it's all here. Only my age and experience is allowing me to resist. Even you are producing more, might I add very potent dormant scent than usual. We need to be careful. And when we finish here I'm going to need a few days of alone time with my mate." Fenrir mentally informed me.
"You two are talking about me-" Wolf spun into a defensive posture as three massive shadows separated from the edge of the forest.
I stepped toward them. "Ah, an escort. We'd like to see your alpha."
The menacing snarls vanished to be replaced by looks of confusion.
The largest, a gray wolf, growled at his two smaller companions who growled back.
"They're arguing what to do. The big one seems to think it's a trap. While the two smaller ones are arguing over how to split us up between them." Fenrir mentally translated.
"They should find out how dangerous we are before deciding who will get the best servings." Wolf mentally growled.
"Um, no. I'm actively hiding our true scents and natures from them. They thing we're normal, if rather brave or maybe stupid humans. They're also arguing about that. But the main thing is they are trying to decide how to, introduce us into the pack. Either as new pack members or, if we don't change, back into the village population."
”So they're trying to decide the best way to attack us?" I asked.
"In a way I suppose. Becoming a werewolf is . . . I guess you would say that furrys have the right of it. It isn't a curse or infection that can be passed through a scratch or bite. It's- well sort of like how I share my power with Raulin." Fenrir answered.
Wolf laughed out loud silencing the werewolves. "You mean it's sexually transmitted. And these big puppies are arguing over who gets to knot us?"
I face palmed. I couldn't believe he said that out loud. Just how potent were the pheromones these three sexy wolves . . . I stopped mid thought. Pretty damned powerful considering how long I'd been staring at the Gray one's sheath and the red tip that had slipped out. I snapped my eyes up to his grinning muzzle.
"You like? Make you mine."
"Not. A. Chance. I'm. Already. Taken." I growled punctuating each word.
The gray shrugged as though what I said didn't matter. The other two were moving toward Wolf.
It probably wasn't my best moment but I jumped between them, shifted and roared "MINE! Touch my mate and I will kill every last member of your flea bitten pack! Now take us to your Alpha so we can deal with your human problem."
The two pups hid behind the gray one and whimpered. "Alpha busy. You like us. Why here? Our territory." The Gray asked.
"We're adventurers traveling through the forest. The Holy Knight Captain asked us to deal with his monster problem. Since it is obviously the Alpha's village I though perhaps we could negotiate a solution to the problem."
"I take to Alpha. You not like it, but I take." He growled at the two pups and then led us into the forest.
"He told them to remain at their posts. If their needs grow too strong to use each other but they are not to approach the village. Also you should have sent Jordan back."
"I'll be fine. I have my big strong tiger if I have needs to be dealt with. And no more mental whispering behind my back. I've figured out your mental frequency wolfy god."
I locked down my thoughts as I hoped Wolf wouldn't have a really nasty hangover after this.
