Emerald Secrets: Chapter 9: Dancing Dragons
In which some dragons of course dance. Though in the mortal way.
Yet another chapter looked over by
and myself. Its really funny to see old writing of mine given another eye. Yet again one that goes back and has a more concrete vision of where the adventure is going. One thing that was changed was Mira yet again. She was replaced by Croesus, the white gryphon from before.
Scales and Honor: Emerald Secrets
Chapter 9: Dancing Dragons
They swiftly made their way through the forest back towards the village. The silence hung about them like a tension filled cloud that no one seemed wanting to slice. Though Asterion acted as an army commander, keeping Lyyreth marching at a steady pace. Once there they were greeted by a crowd of anxious and survivors. They seemed scuffed up, but not too worse for wear.
"Oh, thank you, heroes! I really thought they were going to…to…" One girl's words faltered as she looked to them as if she had set eyes on living legends. The other townsfolk joined in as they crowded around the group. In a manner of seconds, they were getting further cheers, pats on the back. Everyone seemed to want to say something in thanks.
"Please, please! We cannot linger here for too long, for we must speak to the Emerald Lady at once!" Arcturus had to shout over the ever-loudening cheers from the townsfolk.
“Get out of the way! I need to speak with them. “Cordenth! Lyyreth!" Croesus pushed aside many of the relieved crowd, clad in leather armor around each limb. Yellow pools of wavering strength traveled about the group like lightning, instantly realizing some where missing. “Where is Cordenth?" The gryphon's voice was filled with fear, his head reaching high. Maybe hoping that the dragon was simply behind the other. “What happened to him?"
Arcturus met the gryphon's gaze, thumbing back the direction they had come."Cordenth and more survivors await a short distance from here. They're all nestled up in a clearing. The dragon was hurt during the fighting but his life was saved by Asterion here." Arcturus said, clasping the minotaur on his shoulder.
"Blessed skies." The gryphon hung his head, claws trembling as he released a relieved sigh. “I'd thought…" He coughed, raising his beak and composing himself. With a flick of his tail what weakness he had was gone, replaced with a gryphon with a goal. “We will send out groups to retrieve everyone at once." He spun to the crowd, barking orders with the experience of a general. “No time to just sit around then, people! Let's get some cool water, some towels, and some medicine for our injured!" The crowd parted as the gryphon continued to shout out commands to the others. People ran off in all directions once he was finished to go get the things he had requested.
“And YOU." Croesus stomped to Lyyreth, somehow the smaller snowy gryphon making the dragon start to shy aware from his burning eyes like a scolded child. “You disobeyed your mother's wishes? Didn't she tell you two NOT to go?"
“We had to." The dragon squirmed, almost comically as the gryphon thrust a wing in his face. “Leave the forest, they're our people."
“Let the adventurers handle it! Do you know what could have happened to you?" The pair's eyes met, and the gryphon's wavered. There was a flash of understanding just what the gryphon meant. “You've never been this thick headed!"
“Sorry." The dragon's head hung, pawing at his snout. “I never meant to Croesus."
“It was rash, it was stupid. It was so risky!" The gryphon pulled the dragon's head with his wing until the two were nuzzling. Admist soft chirps and whines the pair trembled, what worry they had melting away like ice in a summer's day. It all ended when Asterion stomped his hoof, demanding that they continue on.
“Now I have to find your brother little one." Croesus' beak snapped several times, a hardened look of a parents crossing his gaze. “Give him a piece of my mind."
With a nod to the departing gryphon, Lyyreth led the group away and towards the lair of the Emerald Lady. His pace was far quicker than before, practically cantering across the forest floor. The usual tentative drake had his head held confidently high, mumbling something to himself with every step. Like he was trying to mentally prepare himself for the demand of his mother.
Veledar followed, matching the green's pace. His cerulean eyes painted with irritation, claws practically stomping the ground. His need to get this curse removed etched on his snout. Arcturus felt his chest ache, the phantom pain poking at him like several needles pressed firm to his heart. Absentmindedly he rubbed his chest plate, not relishing the chance to relive this sensation again. Would he lose consciousness again? However, he was still a warrior, his body and spirit alike forged in the crucibles of battle. If that was the way to get it removed, then he would have to endure.
He just hoped the Emerald Lady held up to her side of the bargain. Arcturus couldn't see why not. They had just defeated a gods damned army sent down to eradicate her and everyone that got in the way. Otherwise, the alternative was to fight the lady again, which was the last option Arcturus wished to consider after Cordenth almost lost his life. Seeing him struggle over his last breath with blood pouring out of his trembling jaws reminded him too much of Veledar, back when he was just as unable to save the dragon as he was now. They had to choose a better way. Maybe swallowing one's pride would be the best way to go?
Arcturus pushed the grim thoughts out of his mind. Asterion saved Cordenth's life. Everything was going to be alright. They continued in near silence until they stood outside her lair. Lyyreth paused and looked unsure as he scanned over them with his eyes.
"We came this far! What are we waiting for?" snarled Veledar, roughly shoving the door. “Let there be no more obstacles." It opened easily for the dragon with a thud. "Emerald Lady! We return victorious your foes! Now remove my paladin's curse! The dragon punctuated his demand with a savage twack of his tail.
Although Arcturus was on the verge of chastising the dragon for his hot-blooded approach, his ploy seemed to work, as the long dark corridor swirled and shifted like hot wax until they were back in the room with the purple cauldron. The Emerald Lady predatorily towered over them, her tail slightly twitching. Her purple eyes glared down at them, glowing like beacons in the dimmed light.
"That is true. You're the victor. I knew my choice was warranted." Her voice grew harsh like a winter's breeze, as her tail swished back and forth. “Though you still lack the reverence to your betters. You should feel lucky I am willing to entertain our original agreement in light of your obvious disregard for my home."
Arcturus waved off Merlia as the dwarf slowly undid her bow, thankfully unseen as the green ness' focused on Veledar rebutted with the ferocity he'd shown in battle.
Don't, he mimed with a shake of his head as his hand found the dwarf's clenched knuckles. Merlia flashed him a stern look with stitched brows, but, fortunately for him, she kept her fingers away from her arrows.
"I do dare, for we have saved your village from an army that would've laid waste to everything you hold dear!" Veledar hissed, flaring his wings in return. "Now remove your curse from my friend or I'll-“
“We shall gracefully accept any punishment you deem fit for speaking out of turn." Arcturus walked in front of Veledar. He could feel the dragon's steaming breath wash over the back of his head. Irritation that threatened to boil into rage. Rage that could see everything he could achieve undone in a matter of seconds. Though wisely the red bit his tongue.
“Veledar is young. Untested by the fires of war. He speaks only with his heart, for he had been plucking the benefits of an easy life while others bled on the battlefront. Please, do not allow his zeal to tarnish an agreement we can still seal in peace."
The dragoness blinked her violet eyes. She seemed certainly surprised by the gallantry displayed by what she considered a lesser being, but Arcturus knew he needed something more to truly reach her heart. So, he fell on one knee like a knight before his liege, placed both arms on his leg, and bowed his head in submission before the eyes of the amused dragoness. This was more important than pride.
“How intriguing. I thought I'll never see the day when a man's wit proves sharper than a dragon's." The Emerald Lady rumbled deep in her throat, clearly satisfied by the display.
Veledar took the chance to sneak his snout past Arcturus' ear. “What in the blazes is this? We don't have to beg her for-"
“Be silent," Arcturus batted away his scaly nose. “Or are you willing to risk our lives for your pride?"
The dragon shook his head in dismay. Fortunately, no words came out of his maw. Just a long, growly sigh.
“Rise, Arcturus." The lady gestured with one of her slender fingers. “You don't have to hurt your knee to impress me further. You already have. Today, you have proven yourself not just a paladin worthy of carrying Bahamut's flame into the world, but a man of honor who is not beyond humbling himself for the greater good."
“Th-thank you, your grace. That is a very kind thing to say. You honor me with such praises."
“Oh please, enough with the politeness. Or do you intend to kill me with honey?" The dragoness flashed her teeth at him and chuckled deep in her throat. “ Your dragon could learn a thing or two from you. Perhaps I should order you together for the rest of your days hmmm?"
Arcturus stood up and clasped his hands behind his back. He could hear Merlia grumble something to herself, while Veledar struggled to keep himself from outright growling at the dragoness.
"You have spirit, young dragon, but there are many things you can learn from your paladin sooner better than later." She held out a paw and waved it at Arcturus, "I will of course honor our agreement. Your life had never been mine to claim."
With but a flick of her paw, Arcturus felt a breeze of relief wash over him once the curse had been lifted. Arcturus gasped at how his body seemed far lighter than it had done moments ago. Like hanging weights hanging around his neck had been unbound. Even a smile had creased his lips, maybe he would even skip his way out of here? This all was short lived though, as an immense strain followed the moment after.
“Gah!" He collapsed on his fours, clutching at his armored belly.
"Arcturus!" came the concerned voices of his companions in unison. He had to wave a dwarven hand and draconic snout away as he composed himself.
"Don't get your feathers ruffled. I'm-I'm fine. Just a backlash from the spells I've used during the fight," He breathed heavily, tasting the stale air. He glanced up to the emerald dragoness, sparks practically flying as their eyes met. "Are we free to leave now?"
“Of course. There will be no further retribution for the red one's impetuousness…at this time."
"What about my freedom?" Asterion announced his presence with a weighty snort and thunderous clack of his hoof, like an impatient horse. He surged forward, practically pushing the knight aside like an awestruck peasant. "I have saved your son from the clutches of death delivered by the hands of the invaders. I demand you set me free!"
"Did you now?" the dragoness' tail tip twitched with excitement. "You've done nothing less than what is expected of you. This is your home. Man, dwarf, elf, dragon…they are all equals in the eyes of the clergy. Or am I to believe Korde doesn't approve of such ways?"
“I serve no God of dragons, witch. I don't dishonor Korde with my actions" The minotaur balled his hands into fists, then pounding them against his chest like a drum.
“How about with my village then? Did he approve of that as well?"
Asterion's already furious eyes filled with fire, practically setting the air ablaze.
“Be that as it may, am I supposed to reward you simply for doing your duty?"
The bull frothed at the mouth at the coldness of that statement. "Let me go, she-dragon, or strike me where I stand. I will not linger in this forsaken place any longer or serve underneath your claws." Asterion sneered, crossing his arms firmly across his chest like a fortress.
“How quaint, to delude yourself into thinking I'll ever allow you the comfort of a swift death, However..." Her eyes drifted towards the others, stopping to focus on Arcturus, Merlia, and lastly Veledar. "I believe your time with me is at an end. You have of course served your purpose well." she returned her threatening gaze to Asterion, "The deal that you have made with my son is between you and him. I told them to refrain from engaging the invaders, and they disobeyed me. If you wish to be free, I will have these adventurers preform one last task for me."
"Very well." Asterion snorted, "The terms are acceptable. They are fine warriors."
"Good," the dragoness stood up on her fours, coiling her tail around her form. “What do you say, Veledar? Will you do yet another task for me and see this bull freed from my ownership?"
Veledar stared at the dragoness in thought. "We accept. But I want to know why he was your pet. I am sure my friends wish to know as well."
That took Arcturus by surprise. It was honestly well thought for the dragon, as he certainly looked at the greater good here. He typically rushed into things, so this was a nice change of pace. Maybe some lessons were leaking into that thick armored skull of his. The weakened human faintly smiled at the thought.
The dragoness moved past cauldron that was still steaming its purple mist, lighting the ground in a slight glow." Very well, young dragon, I will tell you the tale of my pet." She grinned with a hiss _, “_However, after you have heard it, you may wish to reconsider your stance on this supposed cleric over here."
She then told the story that Asterion shared with Arcturus during that morning at the training arena. However, it was more her twisted side of things. She painted the bull in a more villainous light, brutally murdering each and every treasure that she had. She slowed in detail to every harrowing chop, delighting as Veledar and Merlia winced at the revelation. She finished, clasping her claws together and staring down with malevolent intent. "Do you still wish to free the slayer of women, killer of fathers, basher of children?"
The Emerald Lady fidgeted as Veledar's head bobbed back and forth in contemplation, his frills fluttering in and out.. "My confidence in him hasn't wavered," he broke his silence with a ragged sigh, "He can be useful. I could certainly use a healer of his skill on my quest."
"Interesting," the dragoness replied, stepping closer to Veledar. " So, you would be his master instead of I? You might be more like me than you think."
"Nonsense. I do not keep people as pets or things to be owned." Veledar snarled in reply, "He would be free of you, and be just like my other companions." His head snapped to the bull, "Asterion, if I free you now, will you come with our adventuring group?"
"Do you face strong enemies?" The bull replied sternly, raising a brow.
"We go up against Lumara on our quest to retrieve my possession. You just saw the lengths they are going to put a stop to me."
"I have one condition if I am to follow you to battle and aid you in your quest."
"Is it not enough that we free you?" He hissed, rolling his eyes.
"You will give me any diamonds your group finds. You may keep all the other treasure that you find. If you are not willing to meet these demands, I shall find my own path to follow."
This seemed like a good deal to Arcturus. After all, he had no need for diamonds. What a cleric would need with them, he did not yet know. Although by the look on Veledar's snout, the dragon was torn about giving up the gems, even if they happened to be hypothetical at this point.
"Come on, Veledar." whispered Arcturus to his friend, "It's just diamonds, we literally get everything else and a healer to boot."
"But I want the diamonds... more so if we're talking about red gems. Anything red should be rightfully mine. It would look so well scattered about my other treasures." Veledar quickly complained back at him, pouting a little like a disappointed child.
“We'll get you plenty of other red things. Don't worry." Arcturus rubbed the dragon's snout with a smile.
"Alright, fine. Asterion, against my better nature, you will have your gems. " Veledar held up a claw to point it at the bull, "However, I will hold you to the other part of the bargain. We get everything else, including things that look like gems,"
"Now that's settled, what shall we do for you, fair Lady?" Arcturus asked, turning towards the green dragoness. Despite his calm demeanor, Arcturus was a bit annoyed that yet again she was manipulating them with the promise of the healer's freedom. He had a sneaking suspicion that this was still going according to her plan, whatever that might be.
"What VELEDAR has to do for me is lay waste to a camp of Lumara's soldiers north of here." she then looked to each one of them, "If his courage falters and wishes to bring his…friends to aid him, that is of course entirely up to him."
"You can bet your tail they will be coming along." Veledar snapped back, "I'm not going to let you split us apart even if that comes at the cost of my pride. Why do you need this camp attacked anyway?"
"Besides in retaliation for this cowardly assault on my forest?" The female cocked her head, almost surprised by the obvious question. “I'm also aware of certain prisoners locked away by the Lumarians. My desires should be all obvious to you all. I intend to be the driving force of a rescue mission, and you, my foot troops, are to rescue these people so I can add them to my hoard."
"An internment camp? Here? Are you certain of-“
The dragoness bared her teeth in a snarl that told Arcturus all he needed to know. Her target certainly sounded like one of the places that Arcturus had set up with books, learning centers, and training for new citizens of its conquered lands.
Something happened. Something bad. The paladin realized with a forlorn look about himself. He looked to the Emerald Lady, her purple eyes hardly moving from him. He had the feeling this game she mentioned was for the long term, and only in her twisted way did she know what was going on.
"Besides, as entertaining as our agreements tend to be, there is something else you all need to see, the human and the elven princess most of all."
"Very well. So, we destroy this camp and rescue the prisoners there. Once that's done, Asterion is set free?" Veledar asked as he slowly stretched out his wings, almost letting out a yawn.
"Oh, young dragon. Yes, he shall be. And after that, you'll be ready for the journey ahead and beyond."
"When do we leave for this camp? And where is it?"
"Tomorrow is when you leave. It is imperative that the guards believe you flew there."
Veledar nodded and turned to the others. "Any objections?"
"None from me lad." Merlia replied, breaking her silence.
Veledar nodded and focused on Arcturus. "And you, Arcturus? Can I count on your support?"
"No," he said almost instantly, then watched Veledar do a double take.
"Say again. I must have damaged my hearing from the battle. Was that a no coming out of your maw?"
"That's right," Arcturus crossed his arms defensively. Killing mercs when given no choice was acceptable, yet attacking soldiers who were just doing their jobs was out of the question.
'Why? You were so ready to fight those men in the woods! How is this any different?" asked Veledar, turning his head to the side.
Arcturus looked to the Emerald Lady who was simple watching the argument with a smirk on her snout. Damn her for getting enjoyment out of this.
"Because Veledar, this task pits us against the army I served with for years. I helped set those places up. They are solely for the benefit of the elves, dwarves, and whoever else needs a roof over their heads, a meal in their belly, a teacher to ease them in their new lives."
“Really? That's what comes to mind when you hear the word prisoner?"
“Might be an exaggeration," Arcturus brushed the dragon off, though despite his confident outlook on the situation, doubt still found a way to creep into his mind. Arcturus still remembered that night on the hills, when Lyndis accused his people of heinous acts. Perhaps he was currently clutching onto the image he had, too afraid to find out a truth he ran away from.
"You can't honestly stay on the side when an honorable cleric's life is at stake. Asterion saved a fellow dragon."
“Not out of the goodness of his heart." Arcturus stated, which only made Veledar raise his head, a harsh snort following as he grumbled to himself.
“What about what Lyndis said?" The dragon slapped his tail against the ground. “What about your king wanting me dead for no good reason?" He crouched, lower and lower, adopting a predatory stance. “What about the growing list of evidence that your people as not half as honorable as you deem them to be?" Each question his voice climbed ever higher. "I have seen nothing to offer your people any benefit of the doubt. I will go and accomplish this task without you if needs be."
"I'll go. On one condition that you must absolutely follow."
"Mrawwwgggghhhh," moaned Veledar like a wounded bear, "Why can't people just do as they're asked? Why must there always be a condition?"
"We don't kill everyone there. We give them a chance to surrender. She said she wanted the place destroyed, not everyone killed."
"Fine," The dragon's voice died down to a low grumble. "To think you almost made me go alone... I will of course pay you back for that later." Veledar turned his snout back to the dragoness who was currently stifling her laughter. "Are these terms agreeable to…what's with all the amusement?"
"You are adorable, the way you bicker. Yes, I care not how you accomplish your task as long as the prisoners are brought to me. Now take your leave. I am starting to grow rather bored of your presence. Return tomorrow, and I will have arranged a travel plan on how to get to the camp and back." she replied, gesturing them to a door that appeared out of thin air. Arcturus gladly walked out of the door back to the forest with his friends beside him.
They walked back towards the town at their usual pace. Arcturus could feel Veledar's eyes burning holes in his back. He was just thankful when he had spoken with Veledar that the dragon would not just go on a slaughter spree because of what the Emerald Lady had said. He had to admit, he had been a bit concerned on how far the dragon would go. It was always in the back of his mind the closer they got to Entis. The dragon seemed to read his thoughts as Veledar suddenly was beside him, matching his pace almost perfectly.
“So, what is going on with you? I can feel the tension hanging in the air between us." Veledar tilted his head to the side.
"I've already expressed what I felt earlier. Besides, would you have gone on a revenge-fueled killing spree simply to get the cleric on our side?" Arcturus spied a root and avoided tripping over the damn thing.
Veledar took a deep breath. “You know I will do what is required to get my book back. You know what it means to me. If someone had stood in my way…I would give them a chance to surrender." Veledar ducked his head from a branch hanging in the path.
Arcturus breathed a sigh of relief. “Good. Not everything has to end in violence."
"Was that all that was troubling you?" Veledar stretched his wings as they walked, casting a moment of shade.
"Yes." he admitted with a smile.
"Good then. Stay with me and we'll spend the rest of the day relaxing! Some good food, that music they play, and dancing!" Veledar grinned as he playfully bumped into Arcturus with his side. Arcturus recovered from the bump and did the first thing that popped into his mind. He tried to shove the dragon back. However, the dragon held firm and did not move in the slightest. The red scaled burst out with a growly chuckle.
"When will you learn that doesn't work!"
"Never!" Arcturus let out his own amusement burst forth as he continued to struggle against the dragon's hide. He was yet again forced to admit failure as the red met his eyes, a sly grin creasing his ever-smug snout. “You could have at least pretended."
“And give you false hope?" Veledar rumbled deep in his throat as they began to walk along the laden path. “Never."
They finally returned to the town to find Cordenth relaxed along with a group of villagers around him. They seemed to be tending to the dragon that was spread out on his back. He had several towels that were soaked in water draped over his emerald scales. Even Lyndis was holding a towel to the dragon's forehead. They appeared to be having an intense discussion, one that had them all smiles and laughing. What they were talking about, Arcturus could not tell, but as they closed in Lyndis instantly pointed them out.
"How'd it go? Cordenth and I were just growing bored for you to return. I, of course, was telling him how to properly save a woman in a way where he doesn't get himself killed." She laughed, patting Cordenth on the head. “Good for him huh?"
"It went well. She agreed to let Asterion go in exchange of another favor."
“Another one?" Lyndis frowned. “Haven't we done bloody enough?"
“We need to go destroy a Lumarian outpost north of here tomorrow. She seems to also think that there is something you and I need to see there." Arcturus stated.
"Don't forget how you were under the impression I was going to go on joyful murder spree!" Veledar chimed in, lowering his head to his level, right in between the pair. “How little you thought of me!"
"What's that now?" One of her eyebrows rose as she gave the pair a searching look.
"We can talk about it later." He half-heartily shoved aside the red's snout. “Let's just say my faith in Veledar keeps getting rewarded." The dragon just snickered, a growly chuckle rolling in soon after.
"How touching. It warms my heart."
Arcturus rolled his eyes and gave the dragon another useless shove in defiance.
"Something both of us should see?" Lyndis wondered out loud. "I know it will open your eyes to what I said a while ago, but what could I possibly need to see there?"
"Gods if I knew. You're aware of how little information the Lady had been providing us with."
"Try years." Cordenth grumbled, wrinkling his muzzle. "She doesn't tell us any more than she tells you."
Arcturus had almost forgotten he was there. He rushed over to the green dragon, placing his warm hand on the dragon's scaly neck. "Cordenth! I forgot to ask. How rude of me. How are you doing!? It is not every day you take a harpoon to the chest and live to tell the tale!"
"Thanks for reminding me." the dragon rubbed a pinkish thin river of flesh about his chest. Where the harpoon had been hours before. "It still itches, and it aches like a thorn... Although I have Lyndis here to keep me distracted from my darker thoughts." His frills drooped, turning to the rogue with a weakened whine. “Are you sure it isn't noticeable?"
“If anything, it makes you look tougher." The half-elf smirked, caching his jaw in her chin. This made the dragon's frills perk up, that whine shift to a pleased rumble.
"So let me get this bleedin straight. We relax for the day and head out to greet your fellow countrymen tomorrow?" She rolled eyes. “Knowing them, they'll skewer us full of arrows before we even introduce ourselves. Certainly, sounds like a great time."
"Dat doesn't sound too bad! The questin' bit I mean. I've fired enuf arrows at dose bloody constructs,"" came the voice of Merlia from behind. Arcturus turned to see that she and Lyyreth had pushed through the crowd to get to them. “Figure I get a chance to fire at those detestable soldiers as well!"
Arcturus flashed her the same fiery gaze he did to Veledar, reciting they were there to secure the prisoners and destroy the fort. Not kill everyone there.
“Well ya!" The dwarf waved him off and set her hands to her waist. “But I bet yer going to be crackin some skulls in the least. Not like their going to give over the prisoners eh? Unless ya think they be so weak that a few insults will do the job." She placed a finger to her chin, tapping ever so softly. “Come ta think of it…."
“Don't you start. Just enjoy the rest of the evening and prepare for tomorrow."
"Ya don't haf to tell me!" She smacked his back as he passed. The lot of ya goin' ta be spoiled afta' our stay here. Feasting every night? We best have our fill before we hit da road again! Don't want to hear you mewing like a bunch of chicks for soft beds
"We wont." Arcturus pushed past her, mind already leaps and abound to the next day.The armored paladin wandered through the damaged town for several hours. His eyes tracing along the damaged buildings, mentally pointing out what the people were going to have to rebuild after this. Memories of Dread Flame flickered across his mind like a lizard's tongue, the smell of ash, people screaming, and the repairs that had to be made. He helped villagers move several bits of debris, some crumbling away in their hands from the stress. But their work paid off and ways of travel were unhindered. They broke for a rest leaving the paladin once more to himself.
He found a cozy place to rest at the village's outskirts, below a tree with gnarled branches. Light from the sun filtered down into tiny rays, kissing warmth against his cheeks. He stood there deep in thought, thinking back to Garroth. The haunting look on his friend's face. How far had he come that he would so willingly draw a weapon on a man he drank with so freely? One who'd spent so much time training with? The paladin's demeanor shrunk before such thoughts. While Garroth was in the wrong place, his friend was truthfully trying to save him. He ran his hand through his hair as he breathed in the crisp air of the forest. He never imagined it would be like this. Not when he agreed to help the dragon. How many more friends would he have to turn against? What would happen tomorrow when he led the attack on his own countrymen? He opened his water skin to take a swig from it, and relishing how the refreshing water distracted his thoughts. Until Veledar emerged behind him with a swish of his tail and brassy voice. Of course, the dragon had followed him.
"So what have you been up to?"
"I should ask that of you. You follow me around as if we are attached by a thread."
“What if we are?"
Arcturus laughed as he turned their eyes briefly meeting in an invisible tether of warmth. The rays lit up his scales, adding a golden radiance to his beautiful crimson. He found himself smiling, the very air smelling sweeter. "Or perhaps the narrative can be changed. We could say you were pining after me." he moved over towards a shady spot and sat down. 'Makes a much more intriguing tale. Don't you think?"
"You have been missing for quite a while actually. Merlia is planning more drinking activities with our dragon friends, while Lyndis has spent all her time with Cordenth. I, on the other hand, was bored enough to find my dearest human. You should be flattered Arcturus. There really aren't that many men that can keep me entertained," Veledar held his snout high while he sat settled down onto his haunches, his tail curling around his hinds. "Besides, I deserve a rest after all the fighting today. I think that's one more adventure to add to the tale of the mighty Veledar and his trusty paladin!"
"No doubt about that. Fifty soldiers and twenty-four constructs? That's a damn near feat of strength worthy of song."
"Or three," the dragon grinned, putting his snout into his paws. "I'm still glad to get out of this stupid forest. Can't wait to actually be going towards my destination rather than get slowed down by all these detours."
"Side quests." Arcturus relaxed against the dragon's chest with a deep, fulfilled breath. "It is all part of being an adventurer. I am sure Lyndis can tell you all about it."
"Well they should stuff these side quests somewhere dank and deep." Veledar snorted, blowing some dirt around. "I don't have all the time in the world you know, otherwise there would already be a city with the name Veledar inscribed on its gate."
"Well that's weird to say given you have waaay more time in this realm than any of us." Arcturus laughed at the dragon's impatience.
"And I don't want to waste them on side quests!" Veledar hissed, sticking his tongue out at Arcturus.
They sat and talked for a while about the day's excitement, describing each other's deeds with such flattery, one would think they had done deeds of legend. When they had finished with the story-telling, they decided to spar with one another.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first time when we fight for real, isn't it?" Veledar laughed as he started leading Arcturus to the forest floor.
"Besides that, first time in your mother's enchanted cave? Or even further back, in your own lair!" Arcturus grinned.
"Oh, that hardly counts when you brought a whole damn platoon to attack me." Veledar waved dismissively.
So, they went at it, sword, claw, shield, tail. After a while, it became quite apparent that both were not going all out. The contest kept going until Veledar tripped the paladin with his tail. Instead of taking advantage of it, Veledar just stood there, laughing at his antics.
"So that is the way we are playing than?" Arcturus laughed, standing back up.
They went at it again, and to repay the dragon, he waited for the right moment. It came when Veledar spread himself too far in a lunge, so he used the dragon's weight against him and toppled him with a correct application of his shield. One which left the dragon's front sprawled on the ground.
"How the mighty have fallen," Arcturus laughed, standing there just as the dragon had done earlier. He watched Veledar stand back up, his blue eyes not wavering from him. They seemed to be filled with... uh oh.
"That's it!" Veledar snarled playfully as he pounced at Arcturus like he had done in their previous wrestling games. Both tumbled, getting in and out of several pins as Arcturus noticed something he missed. Veledar was much lighter than he typically was. He had blamed the dragon's drinking habits before, but now, that was clearly not the case. The dragon was going easy on him. He must have made himself lighter!
They tumbled around on the ground as he tried to feel Veledar like he had done before in the sky. He tried to focus on it like he had done with magic, like when he practiced with his eldritch blasts, except he pictured Veledar. There. He could feel the magical presence of the dragon as they tumbled again. It was hard to describe, but in many ways, it felt like having a feeling in your gut. He reached out with the sensation and connected himself to Veledar with a tether. Arcturus then imagined the earth pulling Veledar down, the dragon slowing and becoming weaker.
Veledar gave him a playful nip strong enough to draw blood. "Hey!" he shouted as he used his strength to toss the dragon below him. He held the dragon down and soon had him pinned.
"Hah, I have bested you, Veledar!" The armored paladin declared with a triumphant smile.
"Nonsense! I can break your grip as easily as breaking twigs… " Veledar struggled beneath his grasp. He wiggled all over, but despite his efforts, he could not manage to break free out of the man's iron-like grip. "What…what is this? What have you done to me?"
"Time's up, I win!" Arcturus cheered, standing up and holding his hands up in victory. "And the crowd goes wild as Arcturus, in an unbelievable feat of strength, had managed to best the mighty Crimson Sky!"
"How could this be...there is no way you could have..." Veledar's blue eyes suddenly squinted, "What exactly have you done to me?" The dragon pushed him off, rolling over onto all fours. “What filthy trick did you emply?"
"Not a filthy trick." He met the dragon's gaze with a smile. “Tis a spell called hex that I read about in that book of yours. It sapped your strength. Figured I would use some magic since you've cheated long before me. Combine that with how you made yourself lighter. An easy victory."
"I only used magic to make it easier for you!" Veledar snorted.
"Well that is your own fault. Magic or not, you still lost." Arcturus laughed, crossing his arms.
"Is that so?" a mischievous smile came to the dragon's snout.
"Veledaaaahh!" Arcturus shouted when the mass of crimson scales pounced upon him. This time, the dragon was much heavier than before.
“Ngghhhh…let…go of me, you silly reptile," Arcturus struggled in the dragon's grip in vain. Within a couple of seconds, the dragon had him pressed against the cool earth like a squirming hatchling under its parent's much larger paw. Veledar lowered his face painfully slow towards his face, so that it was mere inches away from his own.
“Dragon. I thought you were supposed to be an expert on my kind?"
"Don't you dare roar." Arcturus struggled as Veledar just gave another grin.
The dragon's maw parted, like a drooling cave of moistness and teeth. Out came the playful roar of victory. Though not as loud as it could have been, it still left the human blushing and ears ringing.
"There. Now we're even." Veledar got off Arcturus, thumping his tail on the ground as he adopted a regal pose. "In a shocking twist of events the crowd turns against the human as Crimson Sky takes his rightful place as the champion! How the fans of our dear Arcturus must be shocked!"
"Even? You caught me unawares! That was hardly fair," Arcturus dusted himself off as he stood up, using the dragon as leverage.
"Just like a certain paladin did in my cave?" Veledar lowered his eye towards Arcturus and raised an eyebrow. Arcturus could just see the happiness in that eye, even if he was not looking at his friend's snout. "This was fair, o' dearest Arcturus."
"Mmm, you admit I was fair when I beat you in your cave the first time?" Arcturus cupped the underside of the dragon's head as he chuckled. “Because that means I'm still ahead of you by one point." He watched the dragon's pupil widen in realization at that statement.
"Graahhh, curse your sharp human wit," Veledar squinted his eyes. The dragon backed away slightly, and Arcturus noticed that his tail had started to sway like it usually did before the dragon pounced. Arcturus decided to run as the dragon bounded after him with a push from his mighty legs. The chase did not last very long. Veledar was much faster than he was, and, after pounce and a great growly laugh coming from his friend, Arcturus found himself once again beneath the dragon's scaly limbs.
“Can we stop with all the pouncing?"
“We're even," the red male stared down at him with a pleased victorious look spread all over his snout. Thankfully, the dragon lacked the urge to roar this time around.
"Happy you got that out of your system?" He laughed, holding onto the dragon's foreleg.
"Yes actually, very much so." laughed the dragon, "I think I like seeing you underneath me, pinned and helpless."
"Don't get used to it. I typically have weapons."
“What can your weapons do against my size?" The dragon collapsed softly on the human as both erupted in laughter, as if to a joke only they understood. “I think you're still bested."
“Only because you weigh a ton! How much have you been eating again?"
“Oh insults now?" A warm snort of air rolled across his face. “Now I don't want to get up at all. Best enjoy being their human. I may just rest the day away like this." As if to drive his threat home the red closed his eyes, letting out a pleased sigh. “So relaxing."
Thankfully this didn't keep up for long as the human squirmed and kneaded along the dragon's snout. He made pleads that made the beast rumble, and Veledar must have grown bored. Or at least wanted to stretch his limbs some more. For he was released with a arrogant boast, and teasing lick across his face as the dragon stretched his wings.
They spent the rest of the day roaming the forest, practicing spells, eating, and despite his first thought wanting to be alone he found the dragon's company was most welcome. Time passed like a rapid river, and before he knew it the sun was already setting. Lantern's glows were enchanting the wooden walkways and talks of a celebration where whispered about the air. One for the fallen, their sacrifice, and the victory they had achieved. Perhaps this was the dragon's way of dealing with death?
Arcturus had returned to his room and taken off his armor in preparation for the celebrations ahead. With a quick prestidigitation from Veledar, his clothes that were previously covered in sweat now stood clean as a tunic fresh out of a tailor's shop. Not to mention himself as well. With a smile spread over his fair face, Arcturus went out to join his friends. The festivities seemed to be going like normal, well at least normal for this place. Green banners hung from above, little flags held by children, and people wearing masks with dragon's faces on them. Merlia had yet again beaten Lyyreth at drinking. The pair seated at a table holding a pair of mugs. One of course being an oversized one for the dragon. Who was currently resting his head on the table, his frills the darkest of greens the human had seen.
"It's not my fault," the dragon had hissed as his tail moved and knocked over an empty chair. "Dwarves cheat. They have an immunity to alcohol!"
"Dun worry bout it ya baby, we will toughen ya up in no time!" she had laughed, rubbing Lyyreth with her elbow. “An it be only a resistance!"
Lyndis spent the evening with Cordenth, who'd been told to take it easy by a very cross looking Croesus. The ever watchful gryph had joined the festivities, and every so often would cast a watching eye to that of the resting drake. The dragon had not drunk a drop of ale, wine, or any kind of alcohol. Hell, he was not even overly loud or rushing in any movement he took. When the music started up, he calmly turned into a human with dark green hair adorned with yellow stripes. He had apparently conjured up some elaborate green clothing with golden designs of trees stitched into them. When the gryph questioned his ability to do so the dragon had waived him off. Announcing that he should at least let him dance. The gryphon glanced between the pair, his ears splaying as a smile spread about his beak. With a nod the pair slid to the dance floor.
Together the pair rounded the dancing area, steps always in synch with one another. She would move then he would, their bodies pressed close to one another. People parted as the two slid between them, lost in each other's eyes. Arcturus sighed, remembering how he and his wife did such things in the past. He was pulled from the bittersweet thoughts as Veledar grumbled through a mouthful of food. Envy was etched onto his snout, shining bright in his cerulean pools like a lantern.
“Come on then." He stood, resting a tender hand on the dragon's side. “If you want to dance, then I can show you." He held his hand out to the dragon. “I mean I can only teach you the man's part of it, but you can watch and feel how it goes."
There wasn't even a reply from the dragon. Veledar just instantly transformed into his humanoid form and firmly grabbed onto his hand. The moment they touched the dance floor Arcturus started guiding the once dragon through the motions. He decided to try something easy, one of the first dances that he'd ever done. It was slow, steady and Veledar wasn't entirely bad for a beginner. Though he kept stepping on Arcturus' boots with a "Sorry" quickly followed and reddening cheeks. The humanoid body must have helped with the dragon's coordination sd Veledar was certainly doing leagues better than he had the other night. Arcturus let the music guide them as he carried Veledar around the hall. Their eyes met briefly in between Veledar looking down to check his feet. He had that feeling from before in his gut. Like little wyverns hovering about in his stomach.
"Am I doing well?" Veledar's voice lacked the usual confident aura it usually did. Though he just seemed relieved that he'd not stepped on the human's feet for the last five minutes.
"Yes. Your picking this up quite well." they spun around, holding hands, eyes locked. It was a magical moment. One that caused Arcturus to almost lose himself those bright blue eyes, time seemingly to slow. A predatory grin spread across Veledar's lips.
"Great! Yet another task mastered by me."
They continued to dance the night away, losing track of time. The human showed him many other dances, ones that he'd only done with his wife before. The air was filled with warmth, only rivaled by the crimson glow about both their cheeks. By the time they stopped, the music had far been over.
"There. That should have you covered for your next time," Arcturus grabbed a glass of water and taking a swig from it. "Are you satisfied?"
"What sort of question is that?" the dragon smiled, with a snap of his fingers and purple cloud of smoke the dragon returned to his smug, scaley self. “Of course I am." Veledar took a few bouncy steps on his paw, a throaty rumble causing Arcturus to laugh unbashfully. “You were a most excellent teacher. Though it still pails in comparison to our dancing."
They laughed together as the hall began to disperse, the cups and plates of everyone having long since emptied. Lyndis and Cordenth could not be found, same could be said with Croesus and Lyyreth. Everyone else had slipped away while the pair had been lost within one another, save Merlia of course. The dwarf lay face down on one of the tables, fingers still clutching firmly an empty bottle of elven wine.
Arcturus dragged his feet towards the dark inn, through its solid doors. Climbing the stairs he clutched the railing as if his life depended on it. He fought his eyelids to stay open just one more step, one more second, one more rugged breath. All the while chuckling as a nosing red snout pushed him onward along their sleepy path.
"Why had I stayed up so late?" He wondered out loud. “Oh yes, because a dragon kept me dancing."
“I did nothing of the sort." Came back a growly reply, “You rather enjoyed stepping around."
That he did. More than he thought he would. Once more those wyverns returned in full force. The man couldn't help but smile, feeling as warm as a summer's day. Course that had to be the drink, right? He rubbed the dragon's head, wishing him a good night's rest as he dragged himself to the empty confines of his room. Where he could finally rest in comfortable sheets by himself. No longer would he have to be a cuddling plaything for the red dragon.
He tried to follow the plan, but for some odd reason, Arcturus found himself unable to head into his room. He stared at the darkened sheets, yet somehow, they looked far less inviting than before. They lacked the comfort of another, the warmth of the dragon's scales and the relaxing embrace encompassing his being. He turned back, long fully eyeing Veledar's room. The dragon had left his door open, an obvious invitation.
He knows.
Like he was pulled by a siren's song the paladin was dragged by his legs to the dragon's door, greeted by an inviting sight. The red drake was flopped onto the bed, head on his many pillows with a twitching frilled tail. Forelimbs were held open, a whispered demand flowing from his scaly lips to get into his place and close the door. So, Arcturus did, shedding his tired clothes and slipping between the dragon's limbs. They closed around his chest, pulling him close against those leathery scales and firm chest. All at once he felt relaxed, so protected. Like nothing could disrupt this aura of comfort, only reinforced as Veledar's pleased sigh was like music to his ears.
“There we go. Right where you belong."
“Oh, shush you." His eye lids started to waver, drifting downward with each rumbling breath the dragon took. How he'd missed this over the years, all too often returning home to an empty house and far lonelier bed. Many nights he'd downed a few drinks to make the task far easier. But here he was, held within the protective limbs of such an enchanting beast. One who wanted his presence and seemed to relish in it. Who needed the comfortable sheets and pillows? He had all he needed right here. With a final sigh he drifted off, guided by the steady thumping of Veledar's heart.
