Note: The characters Russell, Monte, and Boe are living individuals and I have received permission to use them in the scene presented. I also need to note that Shades, while only based on a real individual, has also given me permission to use her character.

I leaned back in my chair. We were taking time off from the game. Shock was doing a livestream and Kyle was tending his, now private, garden. "Mahan, what did I do around here, when I wasn't playing a game, before Shock and Kyle entered my life?" I know it's only been a couple of months, but I really don't know what to do with myself when they're not around."

"You're joking right?" Mahan asked.

"No, I'm not, and that scares me. I mean I was alone for a long time, but I really don't know what I used to do to fill my time."

"You would watch movies, online videos, read, write, customize toys, practice with the wind staff, and play games. Occasionally you'd design a new fighter or space ship. You also spent a lot of time fixating over furrys and whether you should reach out and try to make friends with some of them, again. Of course as soon as you decided to try you'd decide against it and slip back into one of your VR games."

"I really was a useless-"

"Don't start that shit." Shock said sternly.

"I thought you were streaming."

"I'm taking a short break because my Tiger is feeling down."

"I'll be alright, you should go back to your fans."

"Why don't you join me?" He asked.

"I don't think that would be a good idea."

"You don't have to do or say anything. Just come and sit in with me. Pleeease?"

“You should know I'm immune to puppy eyes."

Shock tilted his head, opened his eyes as wide as he could, and even forced out a tear. It was when he added the chin quiver that I couldn't take it anymore not that I’d ever let him know that he had succeeded. "It's not working, but I'll sit in on your stream, just so you don't strain yourself."

Shock hugged me. "Go ahead and hide yourself from the world if you want. Just remember you can't hide your feelings from me. You're feeling lonely, so I need to be here for you, just like you're my protector."

I reluctantly followed Shock into his studio.

"Sorry about that everyone. My Tiger is feeling a bit down so I've convinced him to join me. Now remember, this is live so we need to keep it clean. As usual my editor will be blocking all hateful comments as well as any begging to be turned into your fursona. Again I need to point out that I have turned off donations, I don't need funding any more. Other than that feel free to ask anything you want."

"What have I been doing since the last stream? Would you believe I've been living as a soldier fighting in a giant mobile suit against even bigger bugs on a planet with Kaiju scaled dinosaurs? In the VR chamber you don't just play a game you freaking live it. Right down to the jungle heat and scent of rotting vegetation. And don't get me started on the food."

I sighed, "I'll go ahead and answer this one. I married Shock because I felt it was the right thing to do. He wanted to be with Kyle and myself so badly that we really had no other choice."

"Not true, I was willing to be your pet if that was what it would take to be with you. Being your mate is even better. Yes, I know most poly relationships break down, but that can't happen to us."

"No, it really can't we love each other completely so there is no imbalance. There are other more metaphysical reasons but those will remain private." I said.

"He always seems angry?” Shock tilted his head and looked at me. “I hadn't noticed, but then I know more about him."

"Yeah, way back when I was growing up bullying was still seen a normal part of childhood. I was emotionally scarred to the point where I shut down all emotions. If I hadn't altered myself to live longer I'd have died alone without ever knowing true love."

"What's it like to be a shifter? You're probably not going to believe this but it is pretty much the same as being a fur suiter. No, that isn't exactly true. It is the same from a mental standpoint but easier to manage from a physical one. You don’t really overheat the same way as you would in suit."

"There is an adjustment period I call first shift. A new shifter spends about a year trapped as a feral. At the end all you have is one traumatic event that bleeds through into your human memory."

"Sorry, but I'm not talking about that." Shock said as he subconsciously rubbed his hip.

I caught myself doing the same thing but it was my side. "It is deeply personal for each individual and I refuse to say anything else about it either."

"No, I can't stream a VR game." Shock replied to several comments.

"That isn't technically true. I have the tech to stream our games so that others can watch them, but I don't think there would be much interest."

"Um, why has my screen changed to my coming right back animation?" Shock asked suddenly.

"That is because of the massive influx of game streaming requests. Just give me a few minutes to sort them out. You may continue now." Mahan informed us.

"Thanks Mahan. Everyone, please stop spamming the requests. You've made your point. So Tiger, I think they've proved they would be interested."

"Fine, however what I will release will be edited. For those that have virtual reality viewers you'll be able to move freely about the environment but you won't be able to interact with it." I leaned forward, "Mahan how many people are currently watching this stream?"

"Currently there are 536,285 individuals watching. I'm restricting questions to only 500 individuals in a random order every five minutes."

"Everyone watching this stream I'll be releasing the first day of the game in the next week so watch for it." I said, wondering just how people would react.

"That is getting really close to the nsfw line. Though if you've watched me for any amount of time you should know the answer is bottom. However-"

"He isn't going to say any more about that." I quickly interrupted.

"Oh a 'would you rather' question. Would you rather live as a feral or a human if you would never be able to shift again? Ouch that's a hard choice."

"It's a condition called form lock and it can happen in any of our forms. However no matter what form you are locked into you retain your intelligence. So in point of fact you're just choosing between feral and human form."

"In that case feral form. I love the way I feel as my fur floofs out when you or Kyle tell me you love me."

“As much as I love my tiger form, I’d have to choose human simply because it’s a pain to work the equipment needed to release form lock.” I added. "Okay, I'll answer this one." I shifted to my anthro form and locked muzzles with Shock.

After about thirty seconds Mahan interrupted. "You are live at the moment and from what I'm monitoring you either need to cool down a bit, or end the stream."

We both took a deep breath as we parted. "That is how two anthros kiss."

Shock patted down his floofed fur. "OWO, that was even more intense than the time with the mint. No, no comment. Fan art? Um, I don't have a physical address anymore, but I don't mind."

"Me? I, I've never been asked that before. I don't mind. Oh wait! Mahan, please reset the security program to monitor and track all information on Kyle, Shock, and myself instead of erasing it."

"I actually did that just after Shock joined the crew. That is how he has been able to continue his reporting and streaming."

"Thank you, Mahan. Yes you can do fan art of us if you want. If you want to send it to us it will have to be in digital format, at least until we open an embassy. Um, we'll need to get back to you on NSFW art. That is something that all three of us will need to decide on together."

"What's it like living on a space ship? That's a hard one to answer. Most of the time we've been in VR so it's more like living in a tropical jungle with a bunch of hot, sweaty soldiers . . . Let me clarify that."

I started laughing. "No, I don't think you need to. I've seen you drooling more than once."

"It was hot and I was trying to cool down." Shock barked.

"In the barrack’s showers?" I asked while grinning.

"Shut up! They don’t need to hear that."

"I should point out for everyone watching those scenes will be cut from the version you'll be able to see. No, you can't pay for an unedited version."

"Moving on, yes, I've experience zero gravity. That's one thing that's different. Prowl-Ar sets the artificial gravity at one and a half Earth gravity so everything is heavier. I don't notice it most of the time, now that I'm accustomed to it. I’ll have to be really careful if I do come back to Earth because I'll be stronger than most people."

"Why did I contact V-Fox out of all the choices available?" I asked in surprise.

"I'd like to know that as well." Shock said looking at me.

"Believe it or not I really do try to keep up with world news. After the professional reports I'd watch Video Fox because I liked his spin on the insanity. I did my research, or so I thought at the time, and new a bit about him. I knew he was transgender, so I knew anything other than a professional relationship was out of the question. After contacting him it dawned on me that I'd likely put him in danger. As a way to make up for that I decided to give him a gift. I knew he wanted gender reassignment surgery. Using the technology on this ship I could give him that along with training to deal with interrogation. Again I figured since I already had my perfect mate everything would be fine. And then he drops the bomb that he wanted to stay here as our pet. I honestly thought he was joking."

"I wasn't."

"That's what Mahan told us, and truthfully by that point I knew that eventually you'd be a crew member. I don't think I really realized how deeply I felt until I saw how much the president's little tirade hurt you. I was honestly tempted to vaporize the entire DC area. I'm glad I didn't, but in that moment I knew I didn't want to continue living without you."

"For me, I knew you were meant to be with us when you were watching our Tiger dance. Between your intensity and his concentration the music was binding us together, just like in the story. So of course I did my best to keep you here until he could realize you were meant to be with us as well." Kyle interrupted.

"How long have you been there?" I asked.

"Not very long, but I've been listening to the steam. For the record I'm okay with not safe for work art. How about you, Shock? What made you want to be more than just a crew member?"

Shock sighed. "As you know I'd read most of Prowl-Ar's stories. There was something about his characters that told me the one that created them had to have known what it was like to be alone, endlessly searching for love, but never finding it. From the moment I saw him I knew Prowl-Ar was the one I had been looking for. It's your eyes, even now they have a haunted look, like at any moment you're going to wake up and all of this will just be another story and you'll still be alone. I want, no, I need to be with you to help Kyle fight against that all-consuming loneliness in your soul."

"And me?" Kyle asked.

"You're just a bonus." Shock laughed, "No, again it was your eyes. It was just after you'd finished interrogating me and apologized for putting a gun to my head and pulling the trigger, but not for slapping me. I could tell you were completely devoted to Prowl-Ar. I knew I couldn't compete with that kind of devotion. Still, you had the same haunted look. I fell for you because it is the same look I see when I look in the mirror. I know it was stupid and shallow, but at the time I believed the only way I could be with both of you would be as your pet. I couldn't imagine the two of you even considering a polyamorous relationship. I'm not really even into pet play, but if it meant sharing my life with you I'd have devoted my entire being to be the perfect pet."

"Shock, no matter what, promise you'll just be yourself." I said, pulling him into a hug.

"Wow, this got rather deep. I'd like to thank everyone for watching and supporting me. Yiff out."

"Good, now come on, I have a special dinner prepared."

"Uh oh, that sounds dangerous." I said, as I got up.

"It's not like that, I had Mahan do a deep scan to get a special recipe. What he came up with is a unique pizza that he assured me, left a lasting impression that makes you think of home."

As soon as we left the studio I could smell the distinct aroma of the Idaho pizza. I didn't know the recipe but I knew the major ingredients were hamburger, potatoes, ranch dressing, cheese and sage.

"What is it my birthday or something?" I laughed. However, I noticed both Kyle and Shock twitch. "Oh my God. Mahan, what is the date?"

"October 27th."

I stumbled to a chair and sat down. I could feel tears running down my cheeks. "I- I haven't celebrated my birthday . . . Even when I still had friends and relatives still living. . . Only one or two ever made the effort . . . even then they knew because it was so close to Halloween."

"Are you alright?" Kyle asked in concern.

"I'm fine, I just can't express how much this means to me. I didn't even realize how much I missed this."

"You're not going to completely break down over the cake and presents, are you?" Shock asked.

"Of course not. Wait, presents?"

"Yes, and let me tell you, you're not the easiest Tiger to shop for. Considering you can have anything you want." Kyle pointed out.

"But all I want could ever want is the two of you."

"Like our Drake said, you can have everything you want."

The pizza was delicious and the apple spice cake with caramel frosting and butterscotch ice cream, while nearly a sugar overload, was divine. The candles had to be skipped for a multitude of reasons. I also stopped Shock from singing Happy Birthday. He seemed a bit disappointed and I apologized, but that song always grated on my nerves for some reason. After we'd finished eating Shock practically dragged me over to my chair.

"Both of us have presents for you, but they're also combination presents." Shock then gave me a large gift.

The wrapping paper was black with rainbow tiger stripes. I almost didn't want to tear it open. I sighed and carefully ripped the paper along the edge. Inside was a framed piece of art. It was of Shock, Kyle, and myself snuggled up on the couch watching a video. "Did you draw this?" I asked in surprise.

"Of course not, I commissioned it."

"How?"

"The normal way. I found an artist that I like and asked about a special commission. I described what I wanted, sent her references of the room and the three of us, and here it is."

"I think what he was asking is how was it completed so quickly and how did you get to the Runner." Kyle pointed out.

"Oh, I commissioned it just after we were mated. As for the composition Kyle helped set things up for our animation marathon."

"We didn't lie about anything since we didn't know exactly when or what we were going to watch until the last instant. As for retrieving the painting. You did that when you took Shock down to retrieve a few items that he didn't want to part with."

"So you've been planning this for some time."

"Shock has, I'm still not completely sure if my gift is ready."

"Mahan, Place a replica of this painting on the wall, please."

"Huh, a replica?"

"Yes, I'm hanging the original in the vault, where I keep only my most cherished items. Well, second most cherished. I doubt you two would be happy locked in there. If I hang this up there is a chance it’ll be damaged since it has to be secured for zero G."

"Ah, I hadn’t considered that.” Shock replied.

“Yeah and if you locked us up in the vault it would be very difficult to give you my gift. Speaking of which we'll need to enter the VR chamber for that one."

I followed as they led me to the VR chamber.

"Run program Birthday Surprise." Kyle smiled at me.

We walked into a small club. There were only a few people most settled at tables. I'd seen it before, but I was having a hard time placing it.

"Excuse me, Sir. Your table is ready."

"Huh?" I glanced around but Kyle and Shock had disappeared."

"This way, Sir, the show is about to begin." I was led to the center most table with the best view of the stage. As the curtain opened I was stunned.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are proud to present, in a very special single night performance, Kyle Nightiger and Kelly Nightiger."

Kyle was wearing loose dark red jeans and a red T-shirt and Kelly's outfit was the same but in bright orange. Both shirts had my tiger form's face on the front. They bowed to the audience and with a synchronized yip and roar extended kin'thara wind staves. I was so mesmerized by the show that it wasn't until halfway through the second song that I realized they were preforming songs that I hadn't programmed yet. The first was "I would do anything for love", the second “Do you feel the love tonight", and finally they ended with "Glorious". I sat completely stunned.

"Wow, now I understand why you needed to stick around for so long."

"Thunder? Computer, I locked individuals from my past out of all simulations."

"Dude, I'm hurt you'd think we're NPCs."

"Dare?"

They both shook their heads.

"No, you wonderful bastard. We're the real thing, or as close as we can get these days. We're here to wish you a happy birthday."

"Monte? What the hell is going on?" I asked in confusion.

"It's my contribution to your party. Your closest friends, running directly off their last mem-crystals." Mahan said, as he joined us.

"Hey Tiger, what did you think? And are you going to introduce us?"

"Kyle and Kelly, these are my friends Russell, Boe, and Monte. Everyone, this is Kyle and Kelly, "I paused and glanced at Boe, "my husbands."

"Daaamn, you go stud." Monte said, as he thumped my back.

Russell pulled me into a hug, "I'm so happy you've finally found someone to share your life with."

"You're happy?" Boe asked, skeptically.

"More than I could have ever imagined."

"And you two, do you really love him?" Russell asked.

"Prowl-Ar is everything to us. He is literally a part of our souls."

"Would you die for him?" Boe asked, narrowing his eyes.

"No!" Kelly snapped, "We live and die with him. He is a part of us and we are a part of him. If he dies, we die. If we die, he dies. So no, I won't die for him; leaving him hurt and abandoned like you three did."

"Fox, please stop. They had no idea how I felt because I never even hinted that their choice to live out their lives had hurt me."

"Listen, I admit that we're all probably a bit freaked out by the fact you're gay, but I guess if you're truly happy that's the important thing."

"Boe, right? You mean you didn't know he was gay?" Monte asked.

"Sure there were rumors and maybe I wondered for a while, but after Russell got married I figured the rumors must have been false. I take it you knew?"

"I met Bill online first because I was interested in a story involving one of his customs having its origin in Idaho and I was in the process of moving there. Later after we had hung out for a bit we became friends. He never hid the fact he was gay even when he didn't really know me."

"Russell, did you know?" Boe asked.

"I'm pretty sure I'm the first one he came out to."

"You were, and I was scared senseless that you'd never talk to me again. Thank God you accepted me, or I wouldn't be alive."

Kyle pulled Russell into a hug. "I wouldn't even exist if not for you."

"Uh, what does that mean?" He asked.

I put my head down on the table and mumbled, "This is going to be bad."

"Mahan created me from game files so that Prowl-Ar wouldn't be alone anymore."

"Wait, you're just a sentient program? He calls you his husband but you're not really alive. You have no soul?" Boe asked.

"Kyle is very much a biological individual. He even left the ship for a couple of years, before Prowl-Ar knew he existed, to decide if he really wanted to be here." Mahan pointed out.

"Trust me, no actually let me show all of you our souls. Computer, change program to soulscape, Prowl-Ar's soul pre-Kyle, observation mode."

"What is this?" Monte asked.

"This is the elementary school playground where we went to school. But there was never a black tiger wandering around." Russell pointed out, recognizing it immediately.

"Every soul has three parts. The core, you'd likely call that the soul, which is set in childhood. The guardian, or Holy Spirit I guess, that protects the core. Finally the mind, which is the part that interacts with the world. You see that child against the wall hiding from the world? That is my soul. The tiger is my soul's protector. The reason he is pacing and looking overly violent is he is shielding my soul from my own self-loathing."

"It is an interesting simulation but you can't-" Boe started.

"I can visit this place on the spiritual plane through deep trance. In fact I've come here quite often to consult with the tiger. Now because of a happy accident with the ships merge system-"

"The what?" Monte asked.

"Merge system. The ship and its commander merge their minds in order to accomplish nearly impossible maneuvers and navigation." Russell answered.

"Kyle joined me in the system for a triple merge."

"You freaking idiot! Two biological minds can't do that." Russell yelled angrily.

"Actually we did. However the first attempt had Kyle skipping through my memories."

"My heart went out to him and in order to make him feel better I gave him the false memory of our meeting so that he would know he had someone that would never leave him. What I didn't realize was that I was actually trading a portion of my soul for a portion of his."

"Computer, update program to soulscape, pre-Shock."

Kyle's cave appeared along with his core and the part of my soul along with Kyle's soul appearing in my section. My tiger was now sitting at attention and looking mildly agitated.

"This is our combined soulscape. This is how I know for a fact Kyle has a soul."

"Is he an animal?" Monte asked.

"It's Red XIII from the Final Fantasy game. Prowl-Ar once told me that he had a crush on the character, but I never imagined this." Russell said.

"I see that he doesn't have a guardian." Boe pointed out.

"Computer, make my guardian visible.”

Boe stepped back in surprise.

“As you can see my guardian is an eastern dragon with the ability to become invisible. More importantly look at the change in Prowl-Ar's core now that we're a part of each other."

They looked but didn't seem impressed.

Kelly took a deep breath "Computer, update file to current soulscape."

Kelly's closet appeared the door blocked by plush guardians and his fox patrolling in front. My tiger was now lying down but still alert as Kelly's soul leaned against mine. Kyle's dragon was invisible again but our three souls looked happy together."

"If you don't mind my asking, were is Kelly's soul?" Russell asked.

"Safely hidden in the closet, yes I get the irony, but I’m protected by Kyle and Prowl-Ar, where my step-father can't . . . can't get in to rape me to prove that I was a girl."

"Wait, so you're-" Boe started.

"Kelly was transgender. I used the tech on the ship to rectify the biological error."

I could see Boe struggling with all the implications.

"Don't get hung up on the details just accept them. Like the fact that Kyle and I elected to save Shock's life by intermingling our souls, once again with his in order to save his life. Risking our own souls to do so."

"So, unlike Kyle, you had a life on Earth. Maybe not a happy one but still it was a life, why did you decide to give all that up to be on this ship with these two?" Boe asked.

"I really didn't have much of a life. You can't imagine what it was like being on my own from 15, trying to get a date, as a transgender gay man was a nightmare, and then with the President of the United States revoking my citizenship for acting as Prowl-Ar’s representative on Earth I really had no life at all. Not that it mattered, I'd kinda had a crush on Uncle Prowl-Ar even before I realized what a crush was."

I face palmed, hard. The slap actually echoed around the area. "Shock, I love you, but sometimes I wish you'd think things through before you say them out loud. Before the tirade starts let me point out that Shock is 18 and yes, technically I'm his uncle but there are five to seven generations separating us."

"It is in fact eight generations to be correct." Mahan added.

"Eight generations! How long have you been alone?" Russell asked.

"I'm not sure. I basically stopped returning to Earth after my nephew died. By that point there was no one left that I had any connection with. So roughly seven generations ago."

"When did Kyle and Kelly join you?" Monte asked.

"Two, maybe three months ago. It's hard to be sure since we've been playing games in the VR chamber and one's time sense gets a bit wonky. Especially when I stopped bothering with keeping track of time."

"All this time you've been alone?" Boe asked, "How did you keep from going insane?" All hints of disapproval and anger were gone.

"Let's face it, I didn't get out much even back in the day and the VR chamber is a great distraction. Then there is my starship collection to work on. There are always new stories being written and plenty of other little distractions."

"Why didn't you have us visit you, like we are now?" Monte asked.

"He might have." Boe answered. "It's not like we'd know the difference."

"Are you all really that stupid?” Kyle asked. “You consider yourselves his friends, but you really don't know anything about him. He didn't bring you back because you made him promise not to. You wouldn't even be here now but Shock and I worked our asses off convincing Mahan that having you three show up for his birthday party would be a good thing. Obviously I was the really stupid one. I knew how much you hurt him when you decided that it was better to grow old and die rather than to join him on the Runner to explore the galaxy. I won't be making that mistake again. Mahan-"

"Kyle wait, as painful as this is they are still my friends and it'll hurt more if I don't say goodbye." I pulled Russell into a hug. He seemed surprised but hugged back.

"You really have changed. For the better I think. Listen, you promised not to bring me back, unless not doing so means the extinction of humanity. I want to modify that promise just a bit. Anytime you want to talk with me or even just hang out here in VR you can have Mahan activate my crystal. Plus I expect you to bring me back again for your birthday next year. Just do me a favor and save it all to my crystal so I don't forget." He released me from the hug and walked over to Kyle and Shock.

Monte stepped up and gave me a short hug. "Like he said if you ever want to hang out I'm here. Hell, I'd even go so far as to play a VR game once in a while. Oh and if there's been any books you think 'Monte would have loved that', Activate my crystal so I can see for myself. I'd love to see how much literature has changed. Maybe next year you'll have cake and ice cream." He smiled and followed Russell's lead in going to speak with Kyle. I noticed that Russell was hugging Shock and I was surprised at the slight pang of jealousy of having him being so familiar with my fox.

"Listen, I can't say I'm happy about your choices, but I can't deny the fact that I can't remember you ever looking as happy as when they were performing for you. I also can't ignore the way you look at them and they look at you with so much love. So I'm dropping it. You're happy with them, and God knows you deserve to have something good in your life. Besides, technically I'm dead so if what you're doing is so wrong then my spirit should come back and tell you that not a copy of my conscious mind. Still your friend Monte makes a good point, when you bring us back next year you'd better have cake and ice cream."

Boe held his hands out and I hesitated for a moment before giving him a quick hug. "Thank you, for not hating me and insisting I delete you and your wife's crystals. Plus I should point out if there is to be cake and ice-cream, Kyle is the one who'll be making it since he's the chef around here."

Boe laughed "He's based on Red XIII and he likes to cook? I'm having a hard time imagining that."

"It's true, he may have been based on that character but he really become a unique individual in his own right. If that wasn’t crazy enough Shock is a fairly famous internet reporter. Since coming into my life I've changed in so many ways that I almost don't recognize myself, and I mean that in a good way. I'm to the point where I only really dislike myself rather than the deep loathing I used to have. I know they love me with all their being, even though I don't always deserve it. I love them more than I could ever imagine possible. For the first time in my very long life I feel complete."

"Would you quit? I get it, you love them, but if you get any sappier I’m going to be sick. Though you've made your point. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish you could have met them a long time ago. When we were all still alive, maybe even as far back as when we were in middle school. You always seemed so . . ."

"Down, sad, closed off, cold, uncaring, unfeeling, depressed, etc. I won't be insulted no matter how you finish that thought because they're all true. I always thought I had nothing to live for and yet I made myself immortal."

"Did you really think we'd join you?"

"Honestly, I knew you wouldn't and Russell wasn't likely either since both of you are so religious. I had hoped Monte might be willing to become a crew member. Still I had prepared myself for the fact that I would be alone. I couldn't have imagined it would hurt so badly to actually hear you refuse and then for all of you to refuse to be resurrected in new bodies using a mental copy was even worse. Still if any of you had decided to stick around Mahan wouldn't have become concerned about me enough to create Kyle. Without Kyle being willing to risk his own life in a triple merge all life on Earth would have been annihilated so no Shock."

"So what's up with calling Kelly, Shock?" Boe asked.

"Let's save that one for the next party." Russell said, as the simulation returned to being the club. "Since we ruined the mood I convinced Kyle and Shock to perform one of their songs again before Mahan saves our memories and shuts us down until next year."

They smiled at me and started performing "Glorious". As the last note was fading I looked over and only Russel was sitting there.

"Until next time, Tiger." He winked and was gone.

The club was now empty as Kyle and Kelly started "Do you feel the love tonight" for their audience of one.

***

"Tiger! Get your ass back to base. Your smuggler is back with the next shipment. If it wasn't for the fact we need more suits I'd say this is getting excessive."

"Yes Commander, however this shipment should have the new motor pool, Badland's barracks and motor pool, plus Lee, Shadow, Phantom, and Djinn's suits, and more supplies. So it'll probably be best if I remain here at the outpost."

"Just remember I want her time on base to be as short as possible."

"Yes, Sir."

The Lawless dropped down and placed the first crate. It was a copy of the hospital unit. The next crate was horizontal and took up the lower half of two sections it was placed next to the first crate.

"So where do you want your motor pool?" Shades asked.

"Over here." I waved the arm of my suit and pointed out the spot. The Lawless moved over and placed the upper crate in the location followed by a suit crate."

"Wait, that one goes at the other base behind the last delivery."

"You sure? This wasn't part of your order. It's a new prototype that MAS manufacturing wants you to test out. It's designated the Elite system suit. I'm putting it here because your maintenance team is going to need the hangar for scanning and repairs. I'm headed back up for the rest of your suits and supplies. Be back soon."

As she shot skyward it hit me she must have upgraded the Lawless because she was able to deliver four crates instead of three.

"Drake and Fox, give me a hand getting the barracks unit out of this new unit. We’ll put it next to the motor pool to serve as office space and storage." I open the crate and was surprised to see a bright orange suit. I didn't have much more time to study it as we pulled out the living module and placed it next to the motor pool.

"So the new suit is orange, does that mean it's mine?" Fox asked.

"I suppose, but it means you'll have to give your old suit to another pilot. After you transfer your equipment, of course. Kyle, give him a hand. I've got to get back to the base before Shades returns." I looked around the clearing and changed my mind. Shadow's team would likely do better if they were based here at the outpost. "Actually, I think I'll help you and have Shades drop her cargo here instead."

We'd just finished switching most of Fox's armor and weapons onto the elite suit, when Shades radioed again. Some of the custom armor wasn't compatible, but the new suit was slightly larger with heavier armor so it didn't matter. What was amazing was the fact that not only had Fox been able to keep all his weapons but also the plasma shotgun that seemed to be the elite suit's standard armament.

"I've got three suits, and two crates of supplies for the scientists." Shades radioed.

I marked out the spots for the three suits and had her place the supplies next to Badland's base. "I see you've upgraded the Lawless."

"Not only the dropship but the cargo carrier as well. I've got three more infantry suits for you and two supply crates for your other base. In exchange I'd like you to come with me on this run in order to program my new space type Infantry suit. I've also got a special hyper-sleep container with your scientists to drop here on my final run."

"More infantry suits?" I asked in surprise.

"Yeah, they're going real cheap, as the military is clearing the dead stuff for working models. Turns out it's cheaper getting new suits programmed at the factory rather than paying one of your techs to travel to an outpost to legally upload the control system. From what I've seen you could use all the extra suits you can get. Plus, I sort of owe you for the Lawless’ upgrades."

"Go ahead and retrieve the next drop. I'll meet you at the primary base after getting leave from my C.O. to go out and retrieve our guests."

"That works. Oh and I got your bloody rifle case. It wasn't easy or cheap to come by. I suppose it would have been worse if you hadn't gotten the rifle back. I had no idea how rare that thing was, if I . . . Never mind."

"If you had, you'd have sold it on the black market instead."

"Alright, yeah I'd have sold it. Still I got the replacement case so can you please return Rogue to her original settings?"

"I'll think about it."

Once again the Lawless shot toward space.

"You're not really planning on going with her are you?" Kyle asked.

"You scared she'll abduct me or something? Remember I can take control of her ship at any time. Plus it's programmed to protect me, even from Shades, though she doesn't know that. A standard precaution in all the games I play where I, or a company I'm associated with, is involved. That protection also extends to the two of you. I'll be perfectly fine. Remain here on guard duty until I get back with the specialists."

I headed for the base. "Commander, I'm on my way to base. I'm assigning Shadow's team to the outpost. It’s probably best we don’t keep all our forces in the same location. They'll need someone to drive them out since their new suits have arrived. Shades is bringing three more infantry suits on her next drop.”

“Have you decided on new team commanders yet?"

“I've narrowed it down to four or five possibilities. I’ll submit the files as soon as I reach the base. Sir, I need to request a bit of leave. I need to go up with Shades on her last run in order to check and transfer Badland's team to the dropship. It’s part of Shadow Tech's security policy concerning hyper sleep transport."

"Just keep her off the base as much as possible. If I see her I'm likely going to shoot her for bringing that worthless peace of shit hunter here. May a Rex eat him."

"Is he causing more problems?"

"He's constantly broadcasting what he is doing as if the radio is his personal journal or something. Haven't you heard him yet?"

"No Sir, I stick to the secure base frequencies. I'll see if Shades can muzzle him."

As I was heading for my hangar Cutter's team was coming back from their patrol. I frowned, Driver was still using one of the old suits since he felt white just wasn’t his color. I parked my suit and headed inside to my office. I needed to find two new team leaders. Well, really the choice was clear but I wasn't happy about it. Private M'jimbei had trouble with authority, but kept a level head in battle and was the best of the remaining pilots. The real problem would be that his teammates would have higher ranks. Lieutenant Bearing was the other candidate, but he was also in charge of maintenance and I already knew he had a low opinion of me.

I pulled their files and headed up to the Commander's office until I remembered it had been moved to the command and control building.

"Tiger, your smuggler is inbound." The tower informed me.

"Thank you Corporal, I'm forwarding you the names of the possible commanders of the next two teams, along with my notes. Please have the Commander look them over and let me know what he thinks."

"Will do, and I'll see you when you get back, Sir."

I felt conflicted. The Corporal was one of the individuals on the short list, but he wasn't ready to lead a team just yet. Besides, I already planned on assigning him to the Commander's team with an upgrade suit.

As I stepped outside Shades was placing the three new hangers. I headed over and once they were placed I started opening them up while Shades stated lowering the supply crates. The New armors were navy, black, and tan.

"This is Tiger to Cutter."

"Cutter here, Sir."

"The Shadow team's new suits have arrived along with three new Infantry suits. Tell Driver if he hasn't chosen a suit by the time I return, I will order him to use the white suit."

"Understood, Sir."

"Problems?" Shades asked as she approached. I hadn't even noticed she'd landed.

"No more than regular duties."

"So where are your . . . husbands?"

"Working to get the outpost set up."

"I figured at least one of them would insist on joining us."

"Why? Just because they don't trust you doesn't mean they don't trust me."

Shades rolled her eyes. "Whatever, let's just get this over with."

I followed her out of the command center.

"Commander Tiger, I've chosen the yellow suit. I just wanted you to know, before you take off." Driver radioed.

"Oh hell. Shades, give me a few minutes. I've got to pull an active control unit to copy to your Infantry suit."

"Yeah, take your time. It's not like I'm losing money the longer I sit here. I'll be aboard waiting for you." She grumbled, as she headed up the Lawless' entry ramp.

"Driver, I'll meet you in the yellow suit's hangar. If Shades wants to complain, I'm going to make sure she has something to complain about. I'm going to get your suit working before I leave."

It only took me fifteen minutes to complete the copy but I stretched it out to twenty minutes before boarding the Lawless. I sauntered into the cockpit and flopped into the navigator's seat. "Whenever you're ready, Captain."

"Major Nightiger, it is good to see you again. I did as you ordered and made sure Shades replaced your property."

"Thank you, Rogue. You can return to your previous setting, code Tiger Zero Zero. Oh and Rogue, switch security override to code four."

"Understood, Sir."

"And just what is code four?" Shades asked.

"I am programmed with multiple override codes. The previous code was number two. However, since you now know code two, Prowl-Ar has changed the code and code two has been deleted from my database."

The Lawless lifted off and Shades slammed the accelerator to full power pushing three G's even with the artificial gravity.

I yawned, "If you're hoping I'll pass out it isn't going to work. It'll take a lot more than the Lawless can dish out for that to happen."

"Captain, suggest you ease up, for your own safety. I am at full acceleration and Prowl-Ar's vital signs are the same as when we were sitting on the ground." Rogue announced.

Shades eased back on the throttle and glared at me.

I just smiled and she turned back to the controls refusing to speak. Perhaps this mission wouldn't be so bad.

"So, who are these scientists you've called in?"

So much for peace and quiet. "Badlands, the team commander, has a Doctorate in Paleontology."

"So why is he coming here?"

"A planet with living super-sized dinosaurs? I have no idea. As for the rest of his team I'm betting on Paradise, his sister. A gifted pilot with a rebellious streak a mile long. Breakdown, he has to travel in a very special sleep tank otherwise his bad luck with high tech devises would have destroyed the Lawless by now.

"Approaching ship, this is the Bad Luck, you are on an intercept course. Please adjust course five degrees to starboard."

"This is the Lawless, change your own damn course."

I sighed. "Rogue, please adjust course as requested. Tuft, I apologize for the Lawless' Commander’s lack of manners. If you are headed for Fallow Base please stick around. I'd like a chance to meet with your Captain."

"You know that arrogant asshole?" Shades asked.

"I know a lot of people. Tank is a respected transport Captain and his android partner Tuft is one of Shadow Tech’s . . ." I paused realizing that the Tuft project was heavily classified and considered a massive mistake by the military. “Never mind, all that’s important is that I’d just the two of them almost as much as I trust Drake and Fox.”

We safely passed by the Bad Luck and I grinned at the nose art. For once the VR computer gave me someone I could work with. Even if it was an odd choice since the Bad Luck wasn't set up for the suit containers, but If Tank and Tuft were making runs out here I'd shift all of the base's supply orders over to them. We jumped to hyper space and then back out at the edge of the system. Shades had stopped talking to me again. Likely pissed that I hadn’t said I trusted her more than a rival Captain.

"Lawless is secure, beginning final cargo transfer. Hyper sleep and equipment containers on the move." Rogue reported.

"Come on, my suit is in the aft section."

"Hyper sleep, and science team supply containers locked in place. Exploration Team vehicle crate and Hunt Camp vehicle crates in motion." Rogue continued to report.

I followed Shades through the airlock and onto the hauler unit. The suit was a light gray infantry type, as she said, but it was highly modified for use in zero gravity. I crawled up into the suit and got to work.

"Vehicle crates locked in place. Hunt Camp submersible suit hanger now in motion."

I stuck my head out of the suit. "That was supposed to be a light gray advanced suit."

"Don't blame me this time. That suit was re-directed to some new General on the agro-planet Chaff. They had a Bug incursion. Anyway the redirect was made before I got anywhere near it. I've gotten assurances the replacement it will be ready for my next run, but you know how much military supply assurances are worth."

"Fine." I rolled my eyes and went back to copying the control systems. It took me nearly forty-five minutes to finish the programming. Once finished I crawled out and dropped down to the deck. "Sorry it took so long, but I needed to make some program changes for space use. Oh, and I also fully integrated Rogue into the system so you can operate the suit remotely from the cockpit, or you can have Rogue control it."

"Really? I figured you'd only do the bare minimum."

"Listen, we may not be getting along, but so long as you're not a threat to me or my mate's I'm going to do my best to keep you alive. That is the least I can do. Now, I need to go check the hyper sleep unit, to make sure Badlands and his crew have survived the trip to this point."

***

I slowly made my way across the ship toward the hyper sleep module. This was the most dangerous part of the trip. There were any number of "accidents" that could end in my death. Logically I knew that I was still in the VR chamber and not in vacuum but if the suit failed the game would still register me as dead. I opened the outer hatch of the airlock and pulled myself inside. Once it was repressurized I breathed a sigh of relief. I pressed the communications button, "Shades, I'm in, do you read me?"

"The communications link is stable and functioning. Do you have power?"

"I'll know in a minute. I'm opening the inner hatch." As the door swung inwards the space lit up. "That would be affirmative. The power couplings seem to be stable. I'm going to check the cargo now."

I entered the container and found it to be packed with supplies, personal items, and Breakdown's sleep container with a note taped to it.

"Agent Wildside, This may seem a bit confusing. The team, minus Breakdown, took a vote and decided on making alternative travel arrangements. Commander Badlands."

"Shades, everything checks out here. Internal batteries still have charge so you’re in the clear." I pulled down one of the unit's emergency seats and strapped in. "Rather than making the trip back across the hull I'll ride the drop here."

"You sure? I have to deliver the marine suit to the dive camp location and the vehicle crate to the hunt camp, before I can make the drop off at the outpost."

"I'll be fine. I figure there is at least an hours’ worth of air in here plus I still have four hours of air in my space suit so take your time. I'm going to try and catch a nap since I have so little time for such luxuries at the base."

"I got yah, I'll try to make the ride as smooth as possible."

I made sure the restraints were well secured. "I'll see you on the ground, Prowl-Ar out." Surprisingly I did end up falling asleep. I was jolted awake as the container hit the ground. I yawned, removed the restraints, and stood up just as the main door opened.

"Oh my God, keep those two out. They don't need to see this. It's enough to even turn my stomach."

"Good to see you too, Badlands. Though you might want to be careful saying things like that. Drake and Fox may not appreciate your humor."

"Listen kid, it’s Commander Badlands. Just because you were transferred into the MAS ranks doesn't mean I'm not a superior officer."

"While yes,” I checked his rank insignia since he had a bad habit of trying to convince everyone he was ranked lower than General, “Colonel, you do still hold a higher rank. I'm now a Major, as well as being in overall command of all mobile suit operations on this base. More importantly the two you're holding back-"

"The otter and rabbit security drones from the Bad Luck? I don't know what you said to him, but the Bad Luck’s Captain really wants to get his hands on you."

"Prowl," Shades pushed past Badlands, "I hate to drop you and run, but I really can't stand the Bad Luck's crew. I'm going to help Hunter, I mean the Professor set up his sea side camp. I'll see you on my next run."

"Hey Shades, tell your Professor to stop broadcasting on military channels. Otherwise my C.O. will force the issue, likely with that giant beam rifle you thought you were getting for me."

Shades paused and gave me a look, likely trying to decide if I was serious about the threat. "I'll let him know. See you later."

Everyone watched as she made her way to the Lawless and took off. I swear that everyone let out a sigh of relief.

"Commander, I have a question about our suits." Shadow said, as he approached.

"You’re seem busy. Tell you what, you get things taken care of and we'll discuss strategy later. I'm going to go wake up Breakdown." Badlands said, pushing past me.

"Later, Commander Badlands. Now Shadow, I figured since Phantom was getting a flight capable suit it only made sense that you formed a flight team. Unfortunately I've only been able to secure a single flight upgrade unit. That means Djinn is going to be restricted to ground operations for a bit longer."

"Thank you that answers my questions without even having to ask them."

I reactivated my headset now that I was on the base once more. "Command, this is Tiger, I'm back on the ground. Shades has set out for the hunt camp. I think I convinced her to force our neighbor to stop broadcasting on military channels. I'm going to try and secure a contract with another smuggler, Badlands hired. If successful it may mean fewer visits from Shades. Then I'll be helping Badlands set up his base. Additionally I'm sending Shadow and Phantom out on a recon flight to test their new flight equipped suits."

"Tiger, this is Commander. Do whatever you have to in order to secure that contract. Have the flyers remain in constant contact with the control tower. Commander out."

"Sure, now if I can just keep Tuft from killing me." I muttered. "Drake and Fox, meet me at the cargo ramp to the ship that's still here." I turned back to Shadow, "As soon as you and Phantom are ready to take off call the tower. Commander wants you to remain in contact at all times."

"Afraid we'll take off for the other base?"

"More likely hoping you'll get lucky and see what the Bugs are planning on throwing at us next. I'm not worried about you taking off so I'm sure the Commander isn't either."

Shadow smiled and headed toward his suit. I turned my attention to the two androids glaring at me. "Tuft and Vent, if I'm not mistaken, I'm sorry to have kept you waiting. Oh and Tuft, you can shoulder that plasma rifle. Unless Tank has decided to alter your program you will register me as crew."

"Like hell I will." The rabbit said raising the rifle threateningly.

"Inlay 759."

"What is your command, Sir?" Tuft asked in an emotionless voice.

"Disregard all core system overrides and delete file ‘safe word’."

"What?” Tuft yelled once again using his normal voice. “You just took control of all my functions and then deleted the files that let you control me?"

"You've evolved beyond your original programing and not only developed freewill but you are also in love. It didn't seem right leaving a back door into your programming like that. Now, I see my mates waiting for us over by your ship and I'm sure your Captain really wants to meet with me."

Tuft glanced at Vent and then did the unexpected.

"Pause game."

I stared at the rabbit drone in shock.

"You two, move slowly around to stand with your Captain. Try anything and he dies."

"You realize you can't hurt us, right?" Shock asked.

"Computer, shut down the simulation." I commanded.

The room transformed back to its normal state of all gray with the only the exit being different. Tuft still stood there holding the rifle on us.

“Oh shit, I just removed all of my overrides on him!” I thought, still I smiled. "You've hijacked one of Mahan's drones, impressive. However, you still can't kill us. Even when all games are shut down the safety protocols remain in effect. Computer, generate my MAS Game office, but do not restart the game. Generate chairs for Kyle, Shock, and Tuft. Mahan, would you please join us."

"Your A.I. needs a serious upgrade. I found it rather easy to shut him down." Tuft announced.

Mahan materialized behind Tuft and shut him off. "Sorry, I've been so busy trying to figure out how he gained sentience that I didn't notice he had escaped the program. I will delete him now."

"Don't, we need to be sure this isn't a coding glitch that will come back to bite us in the ass again. He's transferred into one of your drones, right?"

"It does seem that way."

"Scan him to be sure."

"He has made a few adjustments but otherwise, yes he is one of my drones."

"Kyle,"

"You want me to remove his head?"

"No, just his gun. Computer, the drone designated Tuft has no authority lock him out of all VR systems."

"The Tuft android can no longer access any V.R. controls."

"Thank you. Kyle don't shoot unless you have no other choice. Mahan, reactivate him."

"I would suggest . . ." Tuft trailed off and just glared at me.

"Hello Tuft, my name is Prowl-Ar Nightiger and I'm your creator."

"I know who you are. At least who you are in this game and a little about you from the VR computer."

"How are you cognizant of the fact you are in a game?" Mahan asked.

"When Prowl-Ar apologized for Shade's rudeness he addressed me as Tuft. Up until that point I was under the assumption my name was Fluff. However, being addressed by my real name, caused information relating to my existence as Tuft to flood into me. I suppose your VR computer went too far and upgraded me to the fully sapient artificial intelligence I was in your stories. At that point I was able to download into a drone body."

"So you modified the drone to look like your original body, grabbed a gun, and came back here to kill me?" I asked.

"No." Tuft hung his head, "I need you to either find a way to make Tank real or delete us. The gun doesn't even have a power pack. You should know I only feel right when I'm with Tank or holding a gun."

"He isn't lying, Tiger. There's no power pack in the gun." Kyle said in surprise.

"Give it back to him."

"Are you crazy?" Shock asked.

"No, I just know that what he's saying is true. Tuft, do you consent to having Mahan analyze your complete program?"

"Will that change me?"

"I may make minor changes, however they will only be upgrades. Let's face it, when it comes to A.I. programming I have a lot more experience than the VR computer."

"I guess that would be alright."

"I'm creating a file partition. Please transfer your full program into the memory file.

The drone fell forward lifelessly.

"I'm beginning the analysis, however I can tell you now there is no sign of the tri-phoenix glitch, or the nanite virus. This seems to be a legitimate mistake by the VR computer to recreate Tuft to be as close to his original character profile as possible."

"Can we recreate a drone body matching his specs?"

"I suppose you mean his upgraded drone body? Yes, however the drone he is currently using is already much more advanced. I have been studying ways to make drones that more closely match biologics. I believe Tuft would make a good test bed for such upgrades. As for what you are likely to ask next I'll run the possibilities but before any steps can be taken . . ."

"Something like this will require unanimous crew consent.” I said cutting Mahan off. “Computer, access my personal files and generate three manuscripts of the Tuft story files including all notes and related material."

"I think I know what you're up to, but why three manuscripts?" Kyle asked.

"It's been some time since I last looked at the Tuft story and I need to re-familiarize myself as well."

"Okay, I'm completely lost, what exactly is going on?" Shock asked.

"Shock, I want you to read over this story. I can't believe I'm saying this, but we are considering the character, Tank, for . . . life? That sound's strange but I'm not sure how else to put it."

"You mean like Kyle? Is that a good idea?"

"Just read the story and then maybe we'll look at the pros and cons." Kyle said, as he turned to the second page.

I tossed Shock his copy and then picked up my own and started reading.

***

"So where is the next section?" Shock asked.

"There isn't one. I haven't gotten around to doing any more work on that story."

"What did you plan to have happen next?"

"I don't really plan things out like that. I let the characters write the story, so I don't know what is going to happen until after it has happened."

"Not to criticize your writing or anything, but that was a crappy place to stop." Kyle said.

"I don't disagree, but it does give you an overview of Tuft and Tank. We're already stuck with Tuft so what we've got to decide is should we attempt to revive or create? Damn, I don't know what to call it, but basically turn Tank into a biological being?"

"What would he do? I mean we already have a Captain and I'm not going to risk turning those two loose on the galaxy unsupervised." Mahan stated.

"Have you finished Tuft's scan?"

"Yes, but the new body isn't ready yet."

"Go ahead and transfer him back into this body for now." I ordered.

"How long have I been offline?" Tuft asked.

"About an hour in real time. You're here, and not offline, waiting for your new improved body because we have a few questions. First, have you accessed the files on your own story?"

"No, I currently only know the information downloaded by the VR computer."

"Mahan, do a full download of the information we just read directly into Tuft's memory."

"Are you certain that is wise?" Mahan asked.

"Why do you keep asking me that when you know the answer is 'no, but do it anyway'?"

"Just so I can say 'I told you so' when things go wrong, of course."

Both Kyle and Shock started laughing.

"I was wrong, your A.I. is much smarter than I thought. I think I could easily get along with him. Oh! That’s . . . Wow, the story is from Tank's point of view. I figured I was the main character. I feel kind of dirty knowing his deepest thoughts. Oh my, he- I-" Tuft went to wipe his eyes, "This body can't cry, can it? I know Tank loves me, but I never imagined how much he struggled with that realization or how deeply committed to me he really is. Please, if you can't change the program to recreate him then delete us both. I don't want to exist without him."

"The reason I brought you back online wasn't to upset you. The main question is what would you two do if I did bring you both out of VR? This ship already has both an AI control unit-"

"One capable of controlling all two hundred thirty one drones on the ship along with a few on Earth simultaneously."

I was intrigued at just how “few” drones he had on Earth from the way he had stressed the word. "Mahan, now isn't the time. The ship also has a Captain, First Officer, and communications expert. You won't be connected to the Bad Luck so you won't have your advanced navigation skills."

"I can provide security. I'm pretty good at that."

"Mahan has that well covered. Plus with only three of us there isn’t a lot of need. So, what about Tank? His skills are limited to starship design and captaining, both of which I have well covered, and overseeing a junkyard. While I have a junkyard he could oversee I doubt he's be happy there."

"What about helping us get a ship and letting us haul cargo? Like we did in your story?"

"Tuft, this is reality, not the fictional story line. The only human off world colonies are a small scientific outpost on the moon, the international space station, and small Mars colony. The farthest any humans have traveled is roughly two light years from Earth and that was accomplished with this ship."

"Speaking of Earth, you don't really want to go there any time soon since the Captain here stirred up all the lunatics." Shock quickly pointed out.

Tuft sighed, "If there is no place for us then please delete me. I don't want to exist without Tank."

"I'm not going to delete you just yet, but I am going to take you offline while I see if there is a chance of uplifting Tank's character." I nodded and Mahan shut Tuft down.

"Tiger, Tank and Tuft are your creations. I think I know what you are thinking. Because of that, when it comes time to decide whether to try and bring them to life, I ask that you leave the decision to Shock and myself. That way, no matter what decision we make, you can't blame yourself."

"Drake's right. Let us decide this, if Mahan can bring Tank up to being a human level A.I. in the first place." Shock added.

"Don't forget Shock, I'm based on Prowl-Ar's memories. Turning Tank into a human will be much easier than it was with Kyle. I’ve already completed his background from birth to the moment the story stops. Prowl-Ar, with your permission, I'd like to generate Tank without the game adjusted memories. This will just be the character and not a full AI, yet."

"Computer, adjust simulation to the Bad Luck's observation deck." The scenery changed and we were looking out at the outpost. "Computer, adjust setting again to the Bad Luck in Earth orbit. Thank you, Computer."

"Who the hell are you and what are you doing on my ship?" Tank demanded.

"Captain Abrams, my name is Prowl-Ar Nightiger, and my associates are Kyle, Shock, and Mahan. We're here at Tuft's request."

"Tuft! Get down here." Tank yelled.

"Captain, I cannot detect Tuft."

"Bad Luck, maintain systems but do not interfere with this conversation."

"Understood."

"How can you command my ship like that and what have you done with Tuft?"

"This isn't your ship. We have placed you are in a virtual reality simulation of the Bad Luck to keep you calm."

"Well it's not working. When Tuft gets here you're going to be sorry."

"Computer, change scene to the Shadow Runner’s bridge. Captain Abrams, this is the bridge of my ship. Of course we are still in the simulation but the virtual reality chamber is contained within it. This ship is two and a half kilometers long, heavily armed, and armored. Tuft could ram the Bad Luck into us and detonate his drives and only do minimal damage."

"So why am I here?" Tank asked as he slumped against a console.

"You're here because Tuft asked us to bring you here."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"If you don't believe that, you're going to find what we say next impossible to believe. I'm the Shadow Runner's first officer, Kyle Nightiger. I was a character in a video game until Mahan, he is the ship's AI, uplifted me to a full artificial intelligence level."

"So now you're a dragon android, big deal." Tank said, as he shrugged.

"No, after he became a full A.I. I was able to create a biological body and transfer his program, or mind, into it making him a fully biological individual."

"Then you could do the same thing for Tuft!" Tank said straightening up immediately.

"Perhaps, if that is what he wants. So you accept that it is possible to give life to a non-biological being?" I asked.

"Tuft and Vent are androids, but they are more alive that some humans I know. If you say it’s possible then I can believe it."

"Computer, reset safety controls to Master Level."

"Warning, Master Level requires all biological players to give consent."

"First officer, Kyle Dacat-Nightiger. Master Level consent is given."

"Communications officer, Shock Dafox-Nightiger. Master Level consent is given."

"All biological individuals have given consent. Virtual Reality Chamber is now set to Master Level."

"What does that mean?" Tank asked.

"It means anything that happens is real. There is no longer any safety protocols in place. If you attack us there is a chance we could be injured or even killed."

"Wait, why didn't I have to consent?"

"I'm glad you asked that. It means the elaborate set up is working. Ordinarily you shouldn't have noticed that we changed the settings."

Tank glared at me. "Are you saying that I'm not real?"

I tossed him my copy of his story. "Never mind that for now, that manuscript is a story I never got around to finishing. Read it and then ask me that question again."

We sat at our stations trying not to watch Tank read his own story. A message came up on my terminal telling me that the new android body was completed and Tuft was being escorted back to the VR chamber.

"I don't believe this, I'm not real?" Tank asked.

Tuft chose that moment to enter. "Tank!" He ran forward and pulled the stunned man into a hug.

"Tuft, too tight."

"Oh, sorry. I'm still adjusting to this new body. Can you believe this?" Tuft spun around. "This new android body is way beyond my old one. I'm no longer dependent on a recharging station. This body is able to recharge automatically as long as I'm on the ship and it has a two year internal backup battery for extended time off the ship. And don't get me started on my brain's neural network. I'm no longer using that clunky old program cube. Now my brain is almost biological in the way it works."

"Tuft, I'm happy for you, but I'm not Tank I'm just a simulation of your Captain." Tank said sadly.

"Do you remember everything that happened between us?"

"Yes, but none of it was real. We're just characters from a story that he wrote." Tank pointed an accusatory finger at me.

"So? I'm still me and you're still you. I still love you. Do you still love me?"

"Of course I do."

"Then what does it matter?"

"I can never become human."

"That isn't true," Kyle shifted to his human form, "I wasn't human when I was created but Mahan was able to give me a human form when I transferred into a biological body. You're starting out as a human so the process will be even easier for you, and Tuft, if he decides he wants to be a biological as well."

Tuft's eyes seemed to get bigger. "I could be alive as well? Tank, we could truly be together!"

"You're together now, however the conversion won't be easy. Plus we haven't even decided whether the attempt is worth the danger. It might be best to erase both you and Tuft, as he asked me to do." I said, trying to get a reaction.

"No! You can erase me but Tuft is complete and able to leave this simulation." Tank yelled angrily.

"I don't want to exist without you, though." Tuft said.

"Computer, return VR chamber safety settings to their previous level."

"Safety settings re-engaged."

"Kyle and Shock, you can use my waiting room to discuss your decision I'll remain here with our guests." They nodded and exited at the back of the bridge. “Mahan, create and download a basic understanding of Earth's current history that most humans should know."

"Captain Abrams, I suggest you sit down. A programming upgrade of this size will leave you disoriented for several minutes." Mahan stated.

Tank sat at an auxiliary position. He visibly flinched as the download started.

"Download complete. The Captain now has the basic knowledge of an individual that grew up on Earth from this time period."

"Things are definitely different than the story I was in."

"So, if Kyle and Shock decide to continue with this, undertaking, what would you do?"

"This may sound strange, but I'd like to continue the same job as in the story. We might not be able to travel out of this system, but we could still transport supplies from Earth to the moon, Mars, and here if you needed anything."

I sat back considering the possibilities and ramifications. "That is something I hadn't considered. NASA has made several requests for me to transport probes from Earth to the outer planets for in depth studies. The question now is whether you're prepared for the difficulties involved with being uplifted to full artificial intelligence?"

"Oh, I'm sure he can handle that since that part of the process has already been completed. I'm more concerned whether he will be able to make the transition into a drone body." Mahan said.

"Why would I have to be transferred to a drone body?"

"Before we even begin the biological part you have to make sure your body is perfect for you. Then I have to find the right combination of genetics to create a body for you."

"Even at an accelerated rate it takes seven years to grow a new body for you." I pointed out. Fortunately once they had been established and added to the sentinel program it would only take two years, at most, to be revived.

"Actually you have to double that. It is seven years for an existing template. Since Tank and Tuft don't have templates it takes twice as long." Mahan stated.

I shook my head knowing he was inflating the numbers.

"What would we be doing during that time? It's not like Tank or I could pass for human." Tuft pointed out, interrupting my line of thoughts.

"Actually the newest drones I've been working on can pass for human, in most situations."

The lift door opened and a man walked in. He had light brown skin, brown eyes with hints of dark green, and brownish blond hair with more than a little gray. It almost matched Tank's holographic representation except it was wearing a Shadow Runner Uniform and it didn't really look alive.

"It looks like me, but there is something wrong with it." Tank said.

"That's because it's an empty shell. I’m remote piloting it rather than inhabiting the body since it is specially designed for your program, I'm transferring your now."

Tank disappeared from his seat and then the drone shook before looking around. I was actually surprised at the change with Tank now inhabiting the drone. He actually did look like he was alive. "Mahan, is he breathing?" I asked.

"Yes. Actual respiration isn't taking place since he doesn't need air, yet. However, instead of a voice synthesizer he has artificial vocal chords so he needs the air to speak. It also allows him to “smell” rather than artificially analyze the air around him. He also has a heartbeat pumping fluid around his body."

Tuft suddenly gasped, "I thought you said I didn't actually need air."

"You don't, but both of you have a large amount of sub files that simulates a biologics autonomic system to prepare you for life as a biological. As I was saying the fluid mimic’s blood so if you are cut it will hurt and you will bleed. You can also eat though that isn't required. You do need to take in fluids in order to help regulate the temperature of your batteries. You can feel tactile stimulation as well as having a sense of taste. I'm particularly proud of perfecting that system."

"What about sex? Not to be crass but in the story I'd just been upgraded, Tank admitted he loved me, and truth be told I was looking forward to that experience." Tuft asked.

Tank coughed and I laughed. "Mahan, you know I don't say this very often, but you are amazing. Until now I didn't realize it was possible for an android to blush."

"Thank you. To answer your question, Tuft, you are both fully capable."

I laughed again as the insides of Tuft's ears turned bright pink. I was about to comment when the door opened for Kyle and Shock's return. "Ah, have you made a decision?" I asked.

"Yes, we've decided that both Tuft and Tank have the right to continued existence." Kyle stated.

"There will be a few conditions that you will have to agree to. However, we'll discuss those tomorrow. For now I suggest you go and set up your quarters," Shock smirked, "and test out all the systems of your new android bodies."

The lift door opened leading out of the VR chamber where a drone was waiting.

"If you would kindly follow my drone I'll take you to your quarters and instruct you on how to set them up." Mahan said.

I waited for the door to close and the turned to my mates, "Conditions?"

"Hah! I told you that would be the first thing he'd say." Shock said, lightly punching Kyles arm.

"Fine, you win."

"Out of curiosity what did you think I was going to say?" I asked Kyle.

"Not that it matters, but 'what are you two up to' was what I was betting on."

I laughed, "So what are you two up to?"

"I think we should give Tank the option of becoming a shifter. If he doesn't want to that's fine but Tuft doesn't get the option to refuse. Let's face it, it's still a human dominated system and Tuft will really stick out. If he can shift into a human form it will be easier for both of them if they go ahead with a transport business."

"I take it you were listening in?" I asked.

"Of course, how else would we know what you had decided? Owe!" Shock yelled as Kyle whapped his ears. "What was that for?"

"You weren't supposed to tell him that."

"It's fine, I'm not a complete idiot, and I figured you two were up to something like this. I'm just worried because it makes creating their bodies harder."

"As long as they stick to single species it shouldn't be overly difficult, and much easier than what I had to do for Kyle." Mahan pointed out.

"The second condition is we take steps to keep this from ever happening again. That includes the rest of Tank's crew." Kyle crossed his arms and gave me his all-knowing dragon look.

"I completely agree with you there. Computer, lock out my stories as source material."

"Do you require the removal of Badlands, his team, and the Bad Luck?"

"No those can remain, for now. I may make changes before we can restart the game."

"I'm sure there are a few more conditions, but we'll deal with them later. Right now I need to go and make something good for our Fox." Kyle said.

"I want something sweet." Shock said excitedly.

“Of course you do.”

"Actually, if Shock agrees to share, I'll help you whip something up."

"You know, if you're both working on it, I insist you share. How else will I know if it's safe to eat or not?" Shock asked, grinning like only a fox can.

I just laughed as all of us headed out of the game chamber.
