Don't Stop Believin'-Chapter 14
Sierra realizes she's in love with Wayne. How will she deal with those feelings? Find out!
Present Day
It is nighttime at the dragon city. The streets were empty, everyone has fallen asleep. All except two dragons who are walking in the middle of the night.
The two dragons are male. One color is black and the other one is blue. They were heading to the one place that's on their minds.
They showed up at one stone building in the city that no one lives in. They wandered inside there until finally they sat down on their haunches. They waited for five minutes, until they could hear footsteps in the distance. Until another figure came around the corner and walked toward them. It is another dragon, a red dragon. The red dragon looked old.
The blue dragon muttered, "Boss, you're late."
The old red dragon sat down on his haunches and said, "Sorry. I was making sure that my son was sleeping. He may not be a hatchling anymore, but he still sometimes acts like it. Hell he even still stays up late, I mean give me a break!"
The black dragon nodded, "I don't know what to tell you, boss."
The old red dragon sighed and then he asked, "So...Has the human who stayed in this city for the past few days returned yet? With the blue dragoness? Sierra, if I remember correctly?"
The black dragon shook his head, "No boss, the human and the blue dragoness haven't returned yet. They have been gone most of the day."
The old red dragon sighed, "Well...I can wait. After all our plan will come to fruition. I can just feel it. The war between the dragons and the humans will come soon."
The blue dragon waved his paw and asked, "Pardon me, boss, but I kinda forgot, what is the plan? Do we kill the human?"
The old red dragon shot a glare at the blue one, "No! Don't kill the human, at least not yet."
The blue dragon cocked his head, "But why? I thought you hated humans."
Old red flared his wings and hissed, "I do hate them!! I hate every last one of them! For years, I've been tormented by the death of my mate. For years, my son has lived without a mother, and for a long time, I still feel for her death! The humans have dominated this world for far too long! Our kind had this world first, until THEY took it all away from us! Now for a long time, we've hidden ourselves from their world. But soon, our war will come!"
The black dragon had an angry stare, "Yeah, I hate humans as well. They are so meddling and they always cause trouble with our kind. Just ask my parents who are with our ancestors."
The blue dragon cocked his head again, "So how are we doing this thing?"
The boss grinned, "Oh that's simple enough. Since the human and his blue dragoness friend are on a trip somewhere in the forest." He eyed at the black scaled drake, "According to you since you work as a officer."
The black lackey nodded, "Yeah the blue dragoness's friend, the senior officer, the red dragon, who the human named as Neal, has said that they were heading outside the city somewhere."
The old red dragon kept his grin, "And when they get back, then we'll just have to wait for the human to get homesick. After all everyone has a home."
The blue dragon asked, "But if you hate humans, then why don't we kill the human when it gets back to the city?"
The old red dragon glared at him, "Because, you moron, the blue dragoness is his friend. If we just kill him, then she'll go on a rampage and then she'll try to figure out who did it. Then she'll figure out that it was US who are up to no good."
The blue dragon shrugged, "But we are up to no good."
The old one snarled, "NO! I work for the greater good! Our purpose is NOBLE! The humans have occupied our lands for far too long. But soon, we'll take it all back."
The blue dragon asked, "Ok, but if we can't kill the human yet, then what's the plan?"
The red boss smiled, "The plan is, when the human and his blue friend come back, then the human will become homesick. And when he's homesick, he'll want to go home. And when the blue dragoness..." He hissed, "SIERRA takes him home, we'll follow them back to where the human belongs."
The blue dragon cocked his head, "I don't get it. Why should we follow them?"
The old red dragon went on, "Everyone here doesn't really believe that the humans in that world have changed, hell even I still don't. But think about how everyone in this city feels when another dragon dies by their hand."
The blue dragon frowned. The old red dragon explained, "The plan is when they get to where that human lives, then that's when we'll strike, that's when we'll kill them both. That human probably has family, so I'm sure that when he find them dead, then we'll kill him, because he'll be so distraught from their deaths. Or better yet, we'll kill them all at the same time."
The old red drake took a deep breath and said, "Once the blue dragoness finds her human friend dead, then she'll be so weak and distraught, then we'll kill her as well. Cause we all know that she won't fight alongside with us against the humans. She's so grown attached to one years ago, now she's grown attached to another one. I hate her when she brought not one, but another human, since a long time ago! I'll kill her as well, because she's so blind she can't accept the reality that all humans deserve to die!"
The blue dragon nodded, "I get it, first we kill the human and his family, and when the blue dragoness is distracted by their deaths we'll kill her as well."
The old red dragon nodded, "Then after we kill them, then we'll burn whatever land the human lived in. Then one of you will pretend that you've left the city, the morning AFTER you've killed them. And you come back later and you tell everyone in the city that one of our own has died by the humans. That's when I'll get the support we need to start the war and kill every last one of them once and for all."
The black dragon giggled, "Right and they won't know that it was us. Because we'll just pretend to leave the city and then we'll pretend that we've just found the dragoness's body, even though we've already killed her in the first place. They won't suspect that we've started the war and they'll think that the humans started it."
The blue dragon smiled, "Wow...That sounds like a good plan! No one will suspect us that we've killed one of our own."
The old red dragon said with a grin, "Precisely! And once the war starts, and which thanks to our numbers in this city, we'll win. The humans are not like us, WE'RE the hunters. They're weak and we're strong. They will all die by our claws and then we'll take back our lands once and for all. Then after the war is over, my only son will live a happy life, knowing that his mother is avenged!"
Then the old dragon started to laugh evilly.
*****
Morning came to where we were camping and right now me, Sierra, Neal, and Cody are picking apples off the trees.
I climbed on the tree limb and picked another apple off of it, "Got it!" I tossed it down before commenting, "You know...I have to say, I'm still a bit surprised that dragons like apples."
Neal, who is below the tree, grinned up at me and said, "Well what did you expect, mister? That we eat meat ALL the time."
Cody looked up and then gave me an mock expression, "Yeah pal, don't compare all of us as meat eaters. How would you feel if we did that to your kind?"
I sat on the tree branch and shrugged, "I guess I wouldn't like it at all."
Sierra grinned up at me and said, "Exactly, human." Then she cleared her throat, "Ok, so now are you ready to come down now?"
I nodded and then I scooted on the tree branch closer to Sierra's head. Then I grabbed Sierra by the horns and then she carried me off the tree, lowered me all the way to the ground and I touched the ground and let go of her horns. I backed away from her and smiled, "Thanks."
She smiled back, "Don't mention it."
Cody trotted to me and said, "Hey Wayne, since we're all picking at apples just to eat something OTHER than meat, then perhaps you could sing for all of us just to kill the time."
I giggled, "Yeah, when I'm working, I'm not exactly in the mood."
Cody narrowed his eyes, "You are no damn fun!" Then he looked up at Neal and asked, "Hey big guy, do you think that Wayne's no damn fun?"
Neal giggled and nodded, "Yep he's no damn fun!" Then both of them laughed.
I shot a glare at both of them, "Fuck you guys!" Then I whirled around on them and asked Sierra, "Hey Sierra, do you think I'm no damn fun?"
Sierra playfully smiled, "Only when you don't sing for me, but in this case you have, so nope you are damn fun."
I smiled at her, "Thank you very much." Then I whirled around to face Neal and Cody and exclaimed, "You see! Sierra appreciates me! She thinks I'm damn fun!"
Neal rolled his eyes, "Well Sierra, some best friend you are."
Sierra narrowed her eyes at him, "Don't have to be, you egomaniac."
Neal grinned at her, "Not the only one."
Sierra growled at him, "I'm not an egomaniac." I laughed and she glared down at me, "You shut up." Cody started to laugh as well and Sierra glared at him, "You too!" Then all of us guys laughed at her
Cody finally stopped laughing and he looked at me and said, "But seriously dude, when do I get to hear you sing? I mean, Sierra said that you've sing for her, since when do I get my turn?"
I sighed, "Well...I guess I just want to sing at the Braveheart, might as well give my voice a break. And of course...I'm still pretty nervous about it. I mean I've sang in front of so many other humans before, but in front of so many dragons, that's a different story."
Sierra sat down on her haunches and used her paw to pat my back, "Don't worry, Wayne. I know you can do it. You just have to think of whatever human song that's in your brain and the gem at the Braveheart will do the rest. Everyone will get to experience human music for the first time. And it'll be coming from this human's brain!"
I smiled, "Right and I'll be singing along with the music. Kinda sounds like karaoke now that I think about it. Only there are no machines and microphones. Just magic coming from a mind reading, music playing gem...Pure magic."
Neal nodded, "That's right and I can't wait to see the first and only human will get to sing at the Braveheart."
I told him, "Just don't eat me if I'm a bad singer, ok?"
Neal smiled, "Deal! Just don't back out before you get on the stage."
Cody shot up his head, "Well while you guys are just talking I'm just gonna screw around in the forest. Since I don't EVER leave the city, until I did yesterday with you guys. This is really an experience to me. I get to see all the trees and I could even smell the flowers! Only a few of them tickled my sensitive nose."
I laughed, "Well pal, at least you're enjoying the great outdoors!"
Neal grumbled, "I hate flowers, they make me sneeze."
Sierra giggled, "I don't, some of them are smell GREAT!"
Neal shot a glare at her, "Of course you do, cause you're a girl!"
Sierra glared back at him, "Well that's fine, asshole. At least I can like flowers."
I shook my head and giggled, "What am I getting myself into?"
Neal looked down at me, "A gender war, that's what."
Cody beamed, "Oh a gender war?! Can I join?"
Neal playfully smiled down at Cody, "Sure pal! More males against one female, she won't stand a chance!" Then he looked down at me, "What about you, Wayne? Want to join the males in the gender war?"
I laughed, "Sure! I don't want to be in the losing side! I'm lucky I'm a guy after all!"
Sierra groaned and rolled her eyes, "I don't want to do this gender war, so bye!" She whirled around and her tail almost hit my head.
I ducked under it and angrily shouted, "Watch your damn tail already!"
Sierra playfully hollered while she walked, "Then mind it already!" Me, Cody, and Neal all chuckled when she left.
Neal walked to me and lowered his head to my level, "Well kiddo, lets go screw around. I'm sure we'll find something productive to do before we head back to the city tomorrow."
Cody bounded ahead of us nearly knocking me over, "Well c'mon guys, lets go!"
I sighed and then I smiled, "Ahhh, Cody, you really are a card."
*****
I was just alone in the meadow. Just having time to myself. Thinking about last night with Wayne.
I can't believe I'm falling in love with Wayne, just like I've fallen in love with Eric.
Am I doing the right thing? I mean he's not Eric, he's Wayne. I can never replace Eric, no matter what human it is.
But...Wayne really does remind me of him. Wayne is...Full of spirit and kindness, just like him.
But I don't know if I should tell Wayne about how I feel. What if he won't understand my feelings like Eric? What if I...Lose him?
I can't lose Wayne, he's my best friend. He has been the thing that has made me very happy since...Eric died. I can't bear to lose him as well.
Maybe I shouldn't tell Wayne the truth, I won't take the chance.
A voice interrupted my thoughts, "Hey Sierra."
I looked over my shoulder and saw Neal, walking up behind me with a grin on his face. I smiled, "Hey good looking, I thought you would plan your gender war with Wayne and Cody?"
He laughed and shook his head, "Nope. Actually I'm not starting a gender war with the females anymore, I don't think ALL of them are bitches."
I glared at him, "And what does that mean?"
Neal gulped and he waved me off with his paw, "Ah nothing."
I grinned at him, "It better be freakin nothing."
Neal cocked his head, "What would have happened if it was something?"
I smirked deviously, "I'd punch you in the balls."
Neal curled his tail around him, "You better not try it."
I laughed and then he walked and sat on his haunches beside me. He sighed, "This meadow. I really remember playing in this meadow when we were hatchlings. I really have to say, this forest certainly hasn't changed much."
I shrugged, "Well Wayne did say that some things in this world really have changed. He says there are no dragon slayers, no knights, no castles, no kings, nothing like that anymore. He says that it's a better world now, better than the one we'd lived in before. And he also said that all that stuff happened over a thousand years ago."
Neal's face went wide, "A thousand years ago?! I thought our kind would only live for a few hundred years or a bit more than that?"
I shrugged, "Well even I'm shocked about that, and I still don't know why our kind is still alive up to this day. Wayne thinks there is a reason why, but he's still figuring it out."
Neal shrugged as well and giggled, "Yeah, it's a mystery. But you know something? You look pretty beautiful when you're old."
I glared at him, "Oh no, don't you even start! Wayne called me old more than once, and I will not tolerate you calling me old as well!"
Neal laughed, "Well if you're old, shouldn't I be old too?"
My eyes went wide and then I giggled, "Oh yeah! I forgot! You're old too!" Then we both laughed.
We both stopped laughing and we both just sat here in the meadow. Then Neal cocked his head and asked, "So grandma, what are you thinking about?"
I giggled in response, "Nothing much...Grandpa."
Neal giggled too, "Well...You looked like you were deep in thought, is there something wrong?"
My thoughts went to Wayne and then I shook my head, "No, nothing's wrong."
Neal had a frown, "You sure, because I've seen that look before. I know you too well. You're...Acting weird." I stared at him and finally I sighed. He pressed me, "So what's wrong?"
I reached up to my neck to scratch it, "Ok...You won't believe it. But you can't tell anyone this. Cause if you do, I'll kill you."
Neal shrugged, "No matter what it is, I'll keep it a secret. Now tell me."
I took a deep breath and let it out, "It's...About Wayne."
He cocked his head at me, "What about Wayne?"
I hesitated and I said, "I...I..." Then I trailed off and looked away from Neal.
That's when Neal figured it out, "I knew it. You're in LOVE with him."
I turned my head to look at him, with a shocked face. He smiled and then I sighed, "Yes Neal, I love Wayne."
Neal cocked his head, "Hold on, is that why you didn't kiss me some more at the park back at the city? Two days after we've rescued Wayne?"
I shook my head, "No, I really was thinking about Eric, even though he's dead. But...Since last night...I've been thinking about Wayne in a intimate way." Then I shut my eyes and let out a nervous sigh.
Neal really figured that I was nervous and he talked to me in a soothing voice, "Now Sierra, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe he loves you too."
I opened my eyes and groaned, "But he's not Eric! I mean, how could Wayne fall in love with a dragon like me?! He's not Eric and he never will be! This is really hard on me! If I can't be with Wayne, then what am I supposed to do now!?"
Neal had a pity look on his face, "Well I'll admit, that's tough."
I sighed, "You have no idea."
Neal leaned his head over mine to nuzzle me, "It's ok. I know it will."
I sighed again, "How can you be so sure?"
Neal pulled away and said, "Sierra...Do you remember that day you came to my house and you've just confessed that you were in love with Eric, instead of me?"
I nodded, "I remember that well."
Neal smiled, "Well it's like I've said before, your happiness is very important to me. And you know I would have done anything for you."
I looked at Neal's face and then I leaned my head to his and tried to press my snout against his, but he pulled away before my snout could connect with his.
Neal shook his head and said, "I'm sorry...But I can't."
I glared at him, "What's the matter with you? I thought you were still in love with me? After all these years since I've left the city after Eric's death, you still loved me. So why turn away from it now?"
Neal shook his head again, "Because I told you once before years ago, that I won't hold you back. You love him."
I narrowed my eyes at him, "I loved Eric, that's why you let me go, but this is different. That's Wayne we're talking about!"
Neal said, "Doesn't matter. You don't love me, you love Wayne. I've got in the way of your feelings before and I won't do that again. I won't."
I just stared at him, "But I thought you still loved me."
He nodded, "I do, but even I have to move on and find another dragoness to be with. Just like you have to move on from Eric and be with someone else. Like Wayne for example."
My face went wide and then I sighed, "I know I love Wayne, but what would happen if I told him? I...Don't want to lose him."
Neal cocked his head, "And what would happen if Wayne found someone else? Have you ever thought about that?"
I thought about it for a second and then I shook my head, "No."
Neal went on, "There are other females out there, Sierra. And like it or not, one of them will have him and you won't. I...I think you should tell him how you feel."
I stared at him, "You...You think I should?"
He nodded, "Yeah I think you should. It doesn't matter if you love a human or a dragon, the point is I want you to be happy. Not be with a grandpa like me."
I shook my head a bit with a tiny grin, "You're not old, Neal."
He sternly said, "THE point is, you have to tell him. The sooner the better. Cause if you don't, you won't live well after this. Think about what Eric would want. He would want you to be happy."
I just only stared at him after he said that. He's right. Eric would want me to be happy. He would want me to find someone else after he died. I didn't do that years ago and I was alone. I...I have to tell him.
Neal said, "Promise me. Promise me you'll tell him."
I nodded, "I...I'll try. I promise."
Neal smiled, "Good, cause Wayne really does remind me of Eric."
I rolled my eyes, "Tell me something I don't know." I looked down at the grass in the meadow and thought about Wayne.
I...I think I will tell him. Maybe he'll understand.
I just need to pick the time to do that.
******
I wandered around in the woods trying to find Cody, since he just disappeared on me.
Where did that small green lizard go? He can't be that hard to find. He's the only small green dragon in this freaking forest.
I wandered around until I came across the pond from last night. I sighed when I realized that I'm thirsty. Well might as well get a drink before I look for the little bastard. I walked to the edge of the pond and I got on my knees and cupped my hands to get some water in my hands. I took a sip from my hands and did it again.
While I was drinking water, I heard a voice behind me, "Hey, excuse me?"
My eyes went wide and I got up on my feet whirled around and saw that a young HUMAN girl about my age is behind me. A good looking one who looked like she's a tomboy. Wearing a leather jacket and carrying a bag with her. She had long brunette hair over her shoulders.
I sighed and then the girl giggled, "What's up with you? You're acting like you're the only human living out here."
I giggled, "Ah, sorry, lady. I...Wasn't expecting company."
She said, "Well neither was I. Until I saw you."
I frowned, "What are you doing out here? In the woods? I thought a town is very far away from here."
The girl laughed a little bit, "What am I doing out here? What are YOU doing out here?"
I shrugged and gestured my hand towards her, "You tell me."
Then she had a serious look on her face, "If you must know...Do you see the bag over my shoulder? Well...I'm not from around here. I'm from Montana."
My face went wide, "Montana? What are you doing in Colorado?"
The girl sighed, "Well...Look don't tell the police or anybody this, but I ran away from home."
I frowned, "Why?"
The girl didn't say anything at first, until she said, "Look mister, I don't want to talk about it. My life's...Pretty rough."
I muttered, "Oh."
The girl gave me a smile and said, "Well I wouldn't worry about it now. I've been on the road for god knows how long. So now here I am wondering around in these woods for hours, since...Yesterday I think."
I took a step toward her and offered, "Well...Maybe you should stay with me. After all hitchhiking is dangerous."
The girl shrugged, "I can take care of myself, mister. I don't need anyone's help."
I took another step toward her, "Listen, I'm not here to hurt you."
The girl frowned at me, "Well just to answer my question, what are you doing out here alone? Did you run away from home as well? Cause you looked like you have been through a lot."
Honestly I had the urge to tell her that a REAL dragon took me to a city with REAL dragons living in it. But I kept my mouth shut. She'll think I'm crazy.
The girl called out, "Hey asswipe! I'm talking to you!"
I shook my head, "Sorry...I was thinking about something else. No, I haven't ran away like you did."
The girl frowned at me again, "You sure? Cause you look familiar." She looked straight at me and her face went wide, "Oh my god! You're the missing guy that I've saw on the news. Everyone's looking for you. Your name's....Wayne Madigan right?"
My face went wide. My face is on the news!? Jesus, the police are looking for me! Mom and dad probably did this, I've been gone for days.
The girl smiled, "Look if you're a runaway as well, I won't tell anyone. Us runaways have to stick together."
I rubbed the back of my neck, "Heh heh, yeah..." I trailed off. Then I shook my head and asked, "Well since you know my name, what's yours?"
The girl held her hand out to shake mine, "I'm Amanda. Amanda Fuller."
I reached out and shook her hand, "Amanda, nice name."
Amanda grinned, "Well sometimes I hate it, but hey it's what I'm born with." Then she giggled, "So Wayne, where do we go from here? I really want to get out of these woods now. I think I'm lost."
I was about to say something when Cody came out of the bushes and said, "Hey Wayne, there you are! I've been looking everywhere for-" His face went wide when he saw Amanda in front of me.
Amanda heard his voice and looked and gasped when she saw Cody, the small green dragon in front of her.
Cody walked slowly toward her and cocked his head, "Wayne? Who's that? I didn't know there were other humans who lived in this forest."
Amanda backed away with fear in her eyes, her hand over her mouth, "Oh my god."
I held out my hands to Amanda and said, "Wait Amanda, he's not who you think he is."
Cody beamed, "Amanda? Is that your name?" He got closer to her, "Well my name's-"
Before he could say anything else, when he got too close to Amanda, she slapped him across the face. He cried out in pain and sat down on his haunches, "Ow! What'd you do that for?!"
Amanda backed away from him some more. "It...It talked!"
I burst out in hysterical laughter. Only because Amanda slapped Cody. I cried, "Oh my god pal, you've got slapped by a girl!"
Cody groaned, "Wayne! It's not funny!"
Amanda frowned at me and then she frowned at Cody, "Wait? You two know each other?"
I giggled as the laughter started dying down and walked toward her, "Yeah, he's my friend."
Amanda kept on looking at Cody, "But what the hell? What the hell is he?! What are you?!"
Cody got off his haunches and then I pointed at him, "He's a dragon."
Amanda's face went wide, "A...Dragon?! That thing's a dragon?! That's impossible!"
Cody raised his paw to rub the spot on his face that Amanda slapped, "Don't say it like it's a bad thing."
Amanda looked at me and asked, "What the hell-? What's going on here?"
I put my hands on her shoulders, "Ok look, he's not going to hurt you. And what's going on, you wouldn't believe it. But dragons really do exist. And you're looking at one."
Amanda looked at Cody and said, "And that thing could talk like a human? Wait, isn't he small to be a dragon?"
Cody growled at her, "Hey, I take offense to that! The reason why I'm small is because I'm young!"
Amanda raised a brow at him, "Well that explains your small stature."
Cody glared at her, "Wayne, I don't think I like your friend right now."
I let go of Amanda and exclaimed, "Actually me and Amanda just met. She's new to me."
Amanda smiled at me a bit, "Well seeing a dragon is really new to me. I thought they only existed in stories, not in real life."
I shrugged, "Well like I said it's a long story."
Amanda narrowed her eyes at me, "Well don't keep me in suspense, tell me already!"
Before I could say anything to her, I saw Sierra and Neal coming up behind her. Their faces looked confused when they saw her too.
Amanda shrugged, "What? What are you staring at?"
Then Sierra cocked her head, "What have we got here?"
Amanda shrieked in fright and she whirled around and gasped when she saw Sierra and Neal looking down at her.
Neal cocked his head at Amanda, "Well Wayne, who is that? Found another human to talk to?"
Amanda backed away until she bumped into me, shaking in fright, "....Wayne..." She trailed off.
I grabbed her shoulders again as her back was turned on me and calmed her, "Don't worry, they're my friends."
Amanda looked up at them, "They're bigger than the small green dragon here."
Sierra shot up her head, "What did you expect? That we're small as Cody? Now Wayne, who is that?"
Amanda looked at Cody, "Cody? Your name's Cody?"
Cody smiled, "Yep, that's my human name. Of course that's not my real name, but yeah it suits me."
Sierra slammed one paw into the ground and made the earth shake. Amanda shrieked. Sierra yelled, "Enough! Now, girl." She narrowed her eyes at Amanda, "Who are you?"
Neal lowered his head to her level and started to sniff her. Amanda twitched in fright. Neal said, "Hmmm, smells like she has been through a lot. Is she really your friend, Wayne?"
Amanda muttered, "Oh god I sure hope so."
I answered Neal's question, "Well we've just met. I was having a drink at the pond and she just...Found me." Then I lightly pushed his head away from Amanda, "Now will you cut it out? You're scaring her."
Neal raised his head and tilted it to the side, "Hmmm, does she have a name?"
Amanda answered for me, "My name's Amanda, and now for the last time, what the hell's going on here?" Then she turned her head to look at me, "Please Wayne...Tell me what's going on. How did you meet these things? These...Dragons? How did they find you? Where did they come from?"
I sighed and then I patted on Amanda's shoulder, "Well lets find a place to sit down. It's a LONG story."
