Of Men and Monsters

Goltragga watched the city from afar. It had been a mistake to let them get this far instead of throwing them out when they had the chance, but it was too late for that. He was no longer sure if he wanted to do this, but he had enough of having to relive that scene over and over again. A peace broken, a life taken; Goltragga stood up and started to walk. It was time to end this once and for all. Meanwhile, inside the castle, a knight gets an audience with the king. He stands proud and is ready to present the proof of his latest victory. An idilic reunion, were it not from the loud boom that seemed to come from the city gates direction.

Blood, screams, burnt wood, and a group of soldiers getting ready to attack. It all felt so... familiar, oddly enough, yet Goltragga would make sure that things ended differently this time.

For starters, he was alone. None of his sworn brothers had accompanied him, not that he could blame them since he'd had probably done the same if it were any of them leading the attack; but he felt kind of relieved by that. At least, they wouldn't get hurt for his sake. He had enough of that already.

Two soldiers tried to strike his exposed flesh, but their spears broke down as soon as they made contact. A futile attempt meant to hold him down while a third soldier charged at him with a sword. Goltragga could still see their faces as he swung his club and took the three of them out of the picture. So small, weak, and useless. No wonder they feared him and his people.

More soldiers approached. Goltragga ignored them for the moment, covered his eyes from the sun, and looked throughout the ruins of the former town.

-"Where is he?"

Such a… fierce and strong warrior should have appeared by now, but there was no sight of him. Was he planing to just watch as everything was reduced to rubble? Goltragga growled and disposed of the cannon fodder in front of him. He had better fish to fry, and the castle looked like the best place to find it.

Goltragga broke through the barriers surrounding it, both human and otherwise, as he hurried to his destination. The longer this fight went on, the more blood that would be spilled and he was not a monster. At least, not like them.

Countless fell to the might of his club, others were trampled under his large feet, and a few were crushed by his thick arms whenever he tackled; but it was all worth it when he finally arrived to the throne room. There, in the middle of the room, he found him. Kneeling besides the king, and holding a sack, was the one person he was looking for. A silver breastplate, clean and untainted. Golden locks of hair falling down his face. No shield in sight, as he had no reason to use it. The one responsible for all this spilled blood and more. The “courageous" knight: Richter.

The knight stood up and turned around to face the intruder. Red skin. Two big horns. Black patches of hair everywhere. A leather harness on its chest. Fur paddings on its legs. A thick and heavy club. And a tiger loincloth in its waist. It was none other than the ogre he had been ordered to kill just a few days ago, and the one whose head he claimed to have under his arm.

-"I finally found you."

Richter put a hand over the hilt of his word. How come none of the guards had come to defeat this beast? It couldn't have defeated them all, could it? Well, guards or not, this would be the perfect time to defeat it once and for all. Even if… he had failed once before to do so.

The ogre jumped really high and Richter dodged to the side, a wise choice since part of the ground crumbled under and in front of the beast when it and its club landed. The king, however, was not lucky enough and was hurt by the shockwave and the debris that flew with it. Not being a threat, the ogre turned his back to the king to face the knight once more.

-"Don't worry, my Lord," Richter said while looking at his king, “I'll defeat this one just like the other. Though I expect my reward to increase as well."

After saying this, the knight threw the sack towards the king, spilling its contents. A severed head rolled in direction of the king before stopping at Goltragga's feet. Smaller and slightly more delicate, it was the head of a female ogre. Goltragga fumed from his mouth and charged towards the knight.

-"Is this it? Fame? Riches? Are you seriously telling me that this is the reason you killed her? My wife!"

Not really, the knight thought. While they did try to kill as many ogres as possible in the raid, the actual target had only been the chieftain all along. If only those beasts hadn't been so strong and stubborn, they could have taken off its head and been done with it. Instead, Richter had been forced to scurry around and killed by surprise one he had found in a big hut.

His prey stronger than him. His campaign a disaster. Having to pass a failure for a triumph. All the dishonor this all could bring. Did no one realize he was the true victim all along?

-"You are a threat to us and our nation."

The ogre smirked, “Wrong. We don't care about you or your nation. At All. That's why we let you live in our lands a long time ago."

Richter danced around Goltragga. A light cut here and there, the knight had the upper hand in the fight. Goltragga might have been able to strike him down with only one hit, but the ogre was definitely way slower. It didn't matter how strong he was, if it took one thousand slashes to beat him then Richter would make sure to strike the ogre one thousand times before the latter could strike him once. Which might have been true, if that only depended on him.

Goltragga was covered in wounds. As shallow as the cuts may be, and as red as his skin might be, one could easily tell he was hurt and bleeding. Lacking strength, the ogre let go of his club. Richter laughed and launched for a final attack when the unfortunate happened. His sword, worn down by all the hits against the ogre's thick skin, broke in half. Mid-air, and in the middle of an attack, the knight was at the ogre's mercy, something that the latter did not let slip up. The ogre grabbed the knight and pressed him against his body.

-"No, Please. I don't want to die!"

Richter could feel the Goltragga behind him. Chest-to-Back. Waist-to-Hips. A crushing hug that stopped him from escaping. His armor cracking under the pressure. The ogre's chin on his shoulder, and a low whisper in his ear.

-"I'm sure my wife thought the same. But don't worry, I am not like you… at least, not yet."

The knight's armor finally gave in, leaving him exposed to the ogre. Nevertheless, the latter didn't lose his grasp and continued holding him harder and harder. His vision was becoming blurry until, finally, Richter lost consciousness. Goltragga would have his revenge.

-"Sweet dreams."

Richter did not know how long he had passed out. He did not have enough strength to open his eyes, but he had some grasp on the situation based on the things going around him. The smell of trees. The birds chirping. He was in some kind of forest, probably the one next to the ogre's camp. After all, he could smell its raunchy smell and hear it's heavy footsteps.

A prisoner? Likely, but the king would not let this defeat slide. It wouldn't take long before he was rescued. He continued with his eyes closed until he suddenly felt a splash of cold water, and a pair of hands moving throughout his body.

-"Oh, you are finally awake?"

Richter opened his eyes. He and the ogre were face to face. The captive knight tried to pull himself apart, but he seemed to only be able to move his neck. Bound or not, the knight struggled to get free from his captor who only seemed to smile at him. A smug kind of smile. Richter didn't know why that was until he looked at the lake in front of them, and the truth finally dawned on him.

He could see his reflection on the lake. Or, rather, he was able to see Goltragga's reflection. It was everything as he remembered: red skin, black hair, a body covered in scars; but there was something different... he had three horns.

The ogre had grown a new one after their last fight, and a new head to go with it: Richter's. The former knight once again tried to get away, but that's kind of difficult when you're trying to leave your own body. Richter the human was gone, and he was now Richter the ogre. Only another part in Goltragga's body.

-"Wh-What... what is…?"

A cold splash of water interrupted him. His companion was more focused on cleaning them, and their wounds, than on answering his questions. Feeling a little dejected, Richter wondered about how much control he had over their shared body.

He tried to move a toe. At first, nothing seemed to happen. He focused harder. Richter could feel the toe, as if it was his own, but it was almost as if something was stopping it from moving. Eventually, though, the resistance disappeared and it twitched at his behest. He glanced at Goltragga to see if he had noticed anything before trying something more drastic. Nothing.

Emboldened by this, he slightly shifted one foot. When Goltragga leaned in towards the lake, he made sure that they leaned farther in than normal. Finally, when they were scooping some water, he used one arm to grab the other with all his strength. His companion looked at him, but there didn't seem to be any kind of expression on his face. Except, perhaps, for a slight hint of annoyance.

-"Let. Me. Go. Or else..." Richter tightened his grip on the other arm, but Goltragga didn't seem to flinch. The former knight crushed and twisted the arm as much as he could until everything stopped, but not out of his own volition. Goltragga faced his prisoner, though the latter was more focused on looking at his futile attempt at extortion than at him.

-"Let's get things straight, Newbie," Goltragga said, “This is MY body. Everything on it is under my control, including you, and you'll only be able to do as much as I let you."

The ogre chief made his point by using the arm formerly controlled by his companion to hold his head and turned it so that they were eye-to-eye. The former knight looked away. Was it by his own choice or by force, Richter didn't know.

-“However, we still share this body. Pleasure. Hunger. Pain. Everything I feel, you do also."

Goltragga moved their free hand to their side and sunk a nail into one of their deeper wounds: the one that the knight had left on his final attack. Richter winced in pain and tried to scream, but found out he could not do so. He looked at his companions face, but it was as emotionless as before. The ogre chief stood up and continued his way towards his-- their village.

-"And remember, you may be me now; but I'll never, ever, let you forget you are also mine."
