I can't track down one exact reason on why this is really short compared to everything else I've wrote for this series, but I can promise that where Chapter Ten of this series is short by 2000 words and may or may not be the worst of the bunch, Chapter Ten is over by 2000 words and is possibly the best of the bunch. So just hang in their because the series finale is coming up and you will have your fill of words I promise.

Chapter Ten: Missing Improbable

Rolando looked at a computer, taking another sip of his coffee as the manufactured blue light entered his eyes and demanded his attention. Barely managing to hold his attention, he scrolled down a page and when he didn’t find what he was looking for again he cursed.

He searched through every file he could find, every single file on the RAF and yet even as he sat at his computer, trying to find some information none of it appeared. He groaned and placed his head on the table, lifting it up and banging it a few times.

All before him the recorded history of the RAF, from its absorbance of multiple military groups sometime in 2030 to the multiple technological advanced it needed to track Antonio, every single piece of information that he could have needed was their except for one.

He scrolled to the top of the page, it was in chronological order so it should have been there and yet as he started through the list of information all it did was start with the Battle for Washington, he remembered that it was when he was knocked out and nearly missed the battle.

Those were the good old days, he nearly died a hundred times on the ground in front of the building had he not been mistaken, he would have thought that some blood stains of his might have remained on the grass. Yet before that there was nothing, nothing to say of their origin; where they came from and why they came; it was like they didn’t know themselves.

He remembered that night, the massive group of Outsiders gathered out of the building when they were called out by some military general type and the more he thought about the general, later known as General Washington, the more he felt that he knew him. Yet that was impossible, there were no records of him.

He tried to manage his memories but as he thought about it, as the RAF traveled around the building none of them seemed tired. Then again they could have taken transport vehicles, yet no evidence of that was found in the aftermath. Remembering the battle he tried to remember any detail that might help but as he did his mind hurt and he got a headache.

His attention snapped and he couldn’t focus on that point, he remembered the day after searching through the bloodied field trying to find evidence of the organization. Rolando looked down in shame, not wanting to remember so many bodies that didn’t have his gift.

Looking at it he was confused where could so many militants came from, it had to be close so close he couldn’t even detect it, it’d be right under his nose. Standing up he walked out of the building and stood on the front steps his mind flashed back.

“Men we have gathered here today to say no more to your reign of terror over the city of Washington and we shall free her glorious shores from the Outsiders!” The leader of the RAF, General Washington said as he led his men in a march towards the front of the video.

He was in one of the non-magic life groups of the Outsiders and thus was placed behind the main defense, not that anyone cared. He would move from both sides taking them out as necessary, it was a benefit of his gift. Walking forward imagining the battle, a tear fell to his face as he honored those he fought.

The two sides clashing and a massive shield forming between both sides. He walked through people and the shield in his mind as he tried to find the source of the people. Walking through the battle he caused it to disappear and looked for where they could have come from.

He turned down the street he saw them come from and looked, and in all his years of an Outsider exploring this road, seeing this area he never realized that this was a one way road, that had no outlet. There was a massive fence nearby for a cemetery and if he remembered right that was there before the battle.

Looking around they would have had to have come from one of the buildings, looking over he thought they were shrouded in dirt and some sort of evil place. Yet that didn’t make sense, he never saw anyone move out from there before. It had to be some place close, perhaps even closer than anyone thought.

Rolando turned his body, shaking as he walked towards the beds of flowers that surrounded this side and the parallel side of the Outsider building. Walking forward and searching his hand through the flower section he suddenly felt a bump on the ground.

Pushing down on the ground bump suddenly a door slide opened, shaking and shivering as he had to face the truth. Walking forward he saw an orange and yellow lit tunnel as he walked through the passage ways of the base. He found himself in a gathering room, two cat ways above the room and a second level.

“Where am I?” Rolando said as he looked at the deprecated room, looking up a hole in the ceiling was expanding and seemed to be at least as old as the battle. The technology in the room had to be at least thirty years old, an aged genetic manipulator seemed to be the center piece of the room.

Walking towards the platform he grabbed onto the stair rail, a layer of rush forming over it in thirty years of inattention. Climbing to the top, it didn’t seem to have much to it. It was a simple room nothing much to it, a table was at the top of the room.

Looking on the table there was some sort of pen on the table, but more importantly a sample of a green fluid. Clicking in the sample, it bounced back at him and he had some bad flash backs. It was the same green liquid that chased him, he grabbed the sample. Walking towards the back of the area, he found a button.

Clicking it and waiting for something to happen, a door slide like before opened and he found himself in a closet. The door closed before him and opening the janitor’s door, he found himself in an old section foo the Outsider’s base. Walking forward he saw all the relics of his past, crumbling slowly.

Walking forward he found himself in the regular section of the base, the rest of it crumbling over its own weight he needed to secure some funds in order to get it fixed. The only portions left without major damage was the prison and the front. Yet he wondered how the green fluid made its way into the Outsiders base.

He could scan it and find out where’d it come from, form a genetic roadmap and follow it to the end. It might get him information on where the RAF came from, see what happened. Using the genetic manipulator in the newfound room wouldn’t be viable because, so he’d have to use the RAF’s future to find their past.

Looking forward Rolando saw the new RAF base. Kept in a large perception filter hidden area, they had managed to stick a tracker on and find its location. Dressed in all black he walked forward and looked for any evidence of defenses. Finding none he knew that their man defenses would be inside the building.

Walking forward he crossed the desert like location the base was held in, the base; perhaps a sign of the RAF learning, was held on wheels and they were in a large area that would allow them to disappear behind rocks.

Going forward approached the base and in the darkness of the night he kept hidden, he quickly ran to the wheels and stood against them, looking up he saw no cameras that were tracking him and he decided that it was safe to move again.

Rolando ran around the edge of the wheels and found himself under the base of the RAF base. Looking under he saw a series of protected areas, locked tight he wouldn’t be able to get into if he wanted to. However, he did find an access later on the underside.

He climbed the latter and found himself next to an airvent hatch, placing his hands on the vent and squashing himself and pulling himself up into the vent. After climbing the vertical vent and then finding himself on level ground, he took a moment to breathe.

He needed to get into the genetic scanner room and he had no idea where that was and he probably couldn’t be seen asking for directions again. Or perhaps he could walk over to an air vent, looking out into the room he saw the exact type of high stung leader he could use.

“Hello miss?” Rolando said modifying his voice so that it sounded a bit different, a bit lower and more nervous. If he was right she would be so focused on the task she was doing to not look up and turn around to see him, she would only assume that someone was there.

“What do want for the fifth time today, this is getting a bit boring.” She said continuing to focus on her papers as Rolando tricked her from the airvent.

“Well I lost my map and I can’t find where the genetic laboratory is.” Rolando said making himself sound unsure of himself so that perhaps she would take a level of pity out him.

“How many times do I have to tell you stupid interns, it’s two floors up and to the left of the staircase.” She said groaning and never taking her eyes of the paper, feeling lucky Rolando quickly moved away from the vent and tried to find the access vent to the next leave. Climbing up twice, he looked out off the next available air vent, and saw the stairway as well as the doors to the room.

A group of scientists walked out of the area, talking most useless jumble that Rolando ignored as he saw the room lock with them leaving, he needed another way into the area. Looking around he found another climbing level and walked towards the room, he found himself over the room.

Moving the air vent out of the way he looked down into the room, it was probably their closest device that would let them create another Antonio, which could be a problem. Looking down into the room, he tried to find the catch. Pulling a nexus cube out of his pants, he pulled out a spray.

Firing the spray on the floor a layer of lasers around the room was revealed. Staying still Rolando looked down into the section, pulling a large tether and an attachment screw; he quickly placed it into ceiling of the room making sure it was stable.

Attaching the rope to the string and then attaching it to a repelling belt, he quickly descended into the room. With the sample in his hand, he prepared to enter it into the machine. Pulling a flash drive out and placing it into the machines information out slot, he activated the machine and as it started up he quickly heard the sound of a door opening behind him.

He pulled out the flash drive and quickly ascended to the ceiling. With his body above the ceiling, keeping himself squished against the room and hopefully out of site. Below him the laser grid deactivated and two peopled walked into the room, at least them perhaps they wouldn’t notice him, if they were too busy to talk to notice him.

“Oh look that stupid intern must have left the machine on, look at that. General D. Roosevelt said that the intern came to her six times because he was lost, but leaving this on we might have to flash his memory.” The scientist said as he walked in the room with another guard, she looked the least bit interesting what he was saying but she wasn’t looking up and that was good.

He stayed still keeping his breathing silent and waiting for a moment, then he detached the string from his belt and held onto it. They looked at the machine and then he realized the screen was reflecting him. Before the guard could turn around and or call for help Rolando striked.

Both of the RAF members were knocked to the ground, with Rolando’s hand just happening to lead them there. He stood up and hoped that neither of them would die as that might escalate further from there, he was not in the mood to kill any more.

Placing the flash drive and the contents of the tray in the machine, it quickly spun around with a progress bar filling quicker than quicker than quick and then downloading its information into the flash drive. Rolando would have walked away, had a beep not distracted him.

“Heartbeat variation detected, please seek medical attention.” A watch on the scientist said, Rolando groaned knowing that he couldn’t let the innocent scientist die here of all places. Grabbing onto his string and pulling himself back towards the vent, he placed his legs into the vent and made sure he was secure. Taking the ceiling attachment out, he threw it at the door and when he heard the sound of glass breaking he pulled himself back into the vent. Closing the vent and making sure everything was in the nexus cube.

He crawled along the ceiling as someone entered the room, they saw the knocked out people and went to work. If he was lucky they might have thought that it was some sort of noxious gas that knocked them out but he was in a military organization’s base, of the upmost protection so being let out easy might not have been a possibility.

He climbed back towards the way he came and passed the air vent before and nearly made it out through the air vent’s exit port but as he approached the exit, red lights flashed on his face and two large metal grates fell down before him, still he needed to get out.

Placing the sample and the flash drive in his hyper cube; he threw it through the grates and he could hear the fulfilling sound of the cube landing on the ground. From his backpack, he grabbed a sword and decided to make quick work of himself.

Taking a quick breath, he lunged the sword into his chest and presumably crushed his heart. Either way as he slumped over, he left the sword in his chest, cutting and ripping more things open as he landed on the floor. Blood flowed open from his chest and his heart stopped beating.

The sound of the base moving turned fuzzy and then so did the world. His eyes shut and his vision cut to static. And then something grabbed his hand, he was underwater; he could see the sun of life above him. It pulled him out and with a splash he was alive again.

Looking around this time he reformed in a puddle not too far from where he came in. He looked forward and the base was moving, its treads moving forward as the base moved forward trying to escape from its current position. Rolando stood up and looked as the base moved through and into a new canyon.

After the base moved out of area and he could not still see it, walling forward he moved to the previous location that the base was in he looked around and went to the place that hatch seemed to be, following the blowing away tire tracks he searched around.

Reaching down he grabbed the nexus cube and stood up. Looking in it he grabbed the flash drive and held it in his hands if he was right and he was sure about that. Turning around he walked out of the area looking for his car and trying to find it. He returned to Washington and uploaded his files.

“Cortex, the hell is Cortex.” Rolando asked as he viewed the scanner on the super computer. It was a material that was elastic and form fitting, and the closest place in the area that was the Cortex, in fact it was the only company on this side of the world that produced it.

Looking around no one was around, no one was near he would have to go in alone again, and a hour later he was standing in front of the building god knows how many miles into the hell hole that Virginia was. Looking at the neon lights of the company he decided to take the new way in. Using his perception filter he could sneak in.

Unlike the RAF who would have been trained in perception filter detection, he highly doubted that some random company would be training their employ to know where someone was sneaking in. Modifying the perception filter he would appear as someone with in their memory.

He walked forward past the main doors and past the secretary and forward. Marching forward he made his way to the elevator and pulled out his tablet. Clicking the button he passed through a few files and knew he had to go to the fifth floor.

The elevator took him there and as it dinged he walked forward through the door and past another secretary. No one was on to him, he could have probably made it without the perception filter. He walked forward and looked around, it was like an office area or something.

Looking around he walked towards the scientist area, at least what he thought the what was. He walked around towards the area and through the door way.

Looking around he was surprised at what he found, a large clock was before him. Walking forward, there were two chalk boards next to the clock. Waiting a minute the clock didn’t change, it just stayed at three minutes to midnight. Wondering he looked at his watch and it was operating normally.

Scratching out the idea that he was in some sort of time compressed room, he wondered what the clock signified. Looking at the boards next to him, sticky notes and chalk were writing all over the board. Walking towards it he took a picture of the board in front of him and the one behind him.

“What is this.” Rolando said as he tried to search his memory for what the clock represented. He knew he saw it somewhere, somewhere in the past. He thought back to his multiple times through the year trying to remember the clock.

“Didn’t we help invent the digital clock?” Rolando asked himself as he disappeared into the black mind place. Looking around three of him walked around the mind place, searching his memory banks and trying to find the location of the clock.

“Not important, we’re looking for something that looks analog; something that only moves once in a while and when it does it is a big thing.” Rolando said as he cut off anything above 1985 from his mind, anything above that could have been a digital this time it would be anything that could analog.

“It’s the Doomsday clock!” Rolando said as he realized that the clock before him was the ever-changing sign of nuclear, environmental and or complete collapse. He realized that it being three minutes to midnight wasn’t the greatest sign and with the knowledge of the clock’s representation the chalkboard was faded in a darker light.

They painted horrible ways to restructure the world so that the clock in all its glory hit the zero mark. One of the ways spoke of using the goo to release a wave that would prevent breathing and asphyxiate the population of a few war torn counties.

Backing up from the board suddenly the doors opened the secretary walked in followed by a few security guards. They looked at him and saw through his perception filter.

“Now then I can explain this easy to you, run!” Rolando yelled hoping to distract them as he ran forward hoping to surprise them and make a quick getaway. Jumping put he hoped to slam his fists into their faces, but instead they caught his hands and suspended him over in midair. They brought him down to the ground and held him there.

Pulling his arms left and right he tried, to squeeze himself out of the grip and still escape. Yet they dragged him out of the room and into the center of fifth floor. They placed him in a chair and he struggled as too breath as his chest and body were wrapped in plastic.

“Now then we appreciate your concern on what we doing to destabilize the world but you can’t remember this situation.” The body guard said as the secretary handed him a pen like object. He held in his hands and pulled down the shaft, a lens appeared and it flashed.
