Entry 201

Grrrowl, they’re driving me insane!

“Remain calm and focus on relaxing.”

That’s the problem they’re forcing me to relax.

“Perhaps you should choose a different program. I am only here to help you relax and achieve inner peace.”

I know that! I’m the one that created this program! But somehow Trace and Tye have hacked the system so that you’re the only program that will run here in my personal VR chamber. They even locked me out of the flight simulators. The only work I’ve been able to do all week is interview the new applicants and view old VR programs. Which wasn’t bad, but I ran out of applicants, and Dare told on me so now I can’t even get into the main VR chamber.

“Life sucks sometimes, doesn’t it?”

Hi Dawna, I haven’t seen you for a while.

“Sh, not so loud. If Rusty or any one else discovers I’m here they’ll make me walk the plank. They’ve found jobs for me from one end of this ship to the other. Next time you build a ship you might want to make it a bit smaller. I swear if I have to check another empty chamber to see if water is leaking in I’m going to scream!”

Well, at least we don’t have a plank to walk.

“Oh I’m sure Rusty would find one. Even if he had to make me go out and cut down a tree to make it first.”

How about a vacation?

“If they’re anything like your walks, I know the team would never allow it.”

I’ve still got a hover bike.

“No good, they’d just track us down.”

There’s my starfighter. It’s a tight fit, but if I pull out the storage compartment behind the seat we could both squeeze in.

“Tempting, but why don’t we just take the Blade Hunter?”

Not a chance, Dare pulled the freem drive out for maintenance when Rusty told him that the ADL had tweaked it after the first battle of Accordia.

“We could take the hover bike back to the Nightiger estate and take that old relic we discovered.”

That won’t work since it’s locked. Only Tanth’s genetic code will unlock the systems. Though we could take the hunter’s ship.

“That’s a no go. It was moved into the royal city so that it can be modified for Guardian use. When you built this thing didn’t you stock it with shuttles, fighters, and escape pods?”

It has plenty of escape pods but I hadn’t gotten around to fighters and shuttles since I wasn’t going to be able to complete the construction in my lifetime. Wait, we do have a shuttle.

“But you just said that we didn’t.”

I forgot about the Federation shuttle; it should be in bay twelve.

“Oh that’s just great, bay twelve is at the very back of the launch deck. They’ll have us grounded before we make it halfway across the hangar.”

The hull above bay twelve is retractable for rapid launch in emergency situations.

“So where are we going?”

Well, you need a break and I need some action but we don’t want to get to far from Snarion.

“Great, we’re heading for Vesuvia. Just what I’ve always wanted, a night out at a sleazy strip club.”

The Sundowner is a cantina not a strip club. Arlen has different acts on stage all the time. True, some of them are stripteases but he also has a pretty good band. There are singers as well as an occasional play.

“It sounds fine. Any place is better than here at the moment. Besides, maybe I’ll be able to find myself a hot stud while we’re there.”

That’s good, so long as you bring him home to share with me.

“What!”

Hah ha, you should see the look on your face. Oh wait, you can, computer replay the last thirty seconds.

“Be careful, I might just bring someone back to share. And by the way, I’m not kidding.”

That- but- Sounds like fun, I can hardly wait.

“Computer download a copy of this VR session directly to my personal journal, code Pirate Alpha Command.”

Black mail information I suppose?

“Of course. Now, how are we going to get to the shuttle?”

Well, I need to do something other than relax. So I figured I’d get close to the flight deck by having a meeting with Jace and Brent. They haven’t decided whether to join the group or not. So an interview will look like I’m just trying to convince them to join. I’m sure Rusty, and everyone else, will allow me to do that much. Once I meet them in the office we’ll head directly for the shuttle. I want them to meet with Arlen since he’s from their galaxy. I figure he might like to know what is going on in the Milky Way.

“Odd name for a galaxy.”

Tell me about it. Anyway for your part, you’re going to be checking the shuttle to be sure Crystal didn’t leave us any surprises. Everyone should be happy with that since you’ll be working. Plus, if you try to take off, they know they can ground the shuttle.

“But only if we were to leave by the main launch doors. Is there anything I’ll need to pack?”

You might want to make sure your blaster is fully charged and that’s about it.

“Great, see you soon.”

Entry 202

“Let me guess, you brought us here to pressure us into joining your group?”

Well, if that’s what everyone else wants to think, then I don’t have a problem with it. The reason that I asked you two to meet me here is because I’m going on a little trip, and I’d like you to accompany me.

“Taking us to a slave market?”

“Jace! Don’t you think he deserves a little more respect than that? After all he removed the Federation’s leashes, as well as repairing the mess they made of our DNA.”

You had access to the Federation’s computers; did you ever find a reference to the Eden project?

“Yeah, I know about the Eden project. All furry slaves know about the Eden project. It was the beginning of our existence. The humans created a machine that was meant to recreate their home planet. The problem was that the humans they chose were … human. Most of them discovered that the evolver could do more than just recreate extinct life forms. It could also modify them. They created great slave armies and turned the galaxies they were sent to into giant breeding facilities. It was a dark time for humans but it was worse for the slaves. Eventually we formed secret alliances and stopped fighting each other and took the battle to our former masters. We didn’t realize how greatly the humans out numbered us. They formed the Terran Confederation of Human Worlds. All furries, as they referred to us, were hunted down and returned to slavery.”

So all of the humans, that were a part of the Eden project, became warlords?

“There is a myth, whispered among the slaves, of a lost galaxy.”

“From what those of us, educated in the use and repair of computers, have found is that one of the Eden project ships passed through an unstable gate and was lost. That's where the myth originated.”

It isn’t a myth. The evolver I used to repair your DNA is in fact the prototype unit created for the Eden project. The gateway wasn’t unstable; it was intentionally closed to stop the flow of humans into this galaxy.

“So I guess the myth is nothing more than a lie since there are humans here.”

“Not only that, they’re the ones in control and they’re enslaving the furry population here as well.”

That may be, but not all of them believe in the Imperiam’s actions. Most of us respect the rights of other species.

“From what I’ve seen so far, I’m not convinced.”

That’s fine, I’m not going to try and convince you that you’re wrong. What I asked you here for was to see if you would like to join me on a short trip. I’m going to speak with a friend about the gate that you arrived through. I think he has a right to know that the Confederation has discovered this galaxy.

“It doesn’t matter who knows about it. The Confederation will eventually defeat any force that tries to stop it from coming here.”

The reason I want you to join me is because I think he’d like to know what has been happening in his home galaxy.

“What!”

“I was right! If we don’t join your little organization you’re going to return us to the Confederation!”

Arlen is older than the Confederation.

“That’s impossible. Humans can’t live that long, even with the evolvers, they aren’t immortal.”

I doubt any of the humans from your galaxy have spent a considerable amount of time in the company of Gods. If you want to know if I’m lying or not you’ll just have to meet him for yourself. After that you can decide whether you want to join the Shadow Runners or stay at Hollow Base and complete the repairs on your Transport.

“You mean that you’d just let us go?”

Yeah, though I’d suggest you learn a bit about this galaxy before you set out. Right now things are a bit hostile toward everyone. Though, eventually, I’ll have things set right once again.

“I’m willing to meet this human.”

“I guess I’ll go too, but don’t try to pull anything.”

Jace, you worry too much. The only thing I’m going to pull is an escape from my overly protective crew. Now come on, we’ve got a shuttle to catch.

Entry 203

“Where do you think you’re going?”

Oh, hi Rusty, I was just on my way to the hangar bay. Brent and Jace wanted to learn how to pilot ships from this galaxy.

“So why don’t they use the flight simulators like everyone else?”

To use the simulators requires a basic understanding of the flight systems. Of course you wouldn’t understand that, Ghost, since you grew up around pilots.

“For some reason I don’t believe you. You realize that Trace locked down the controls of the Blade Hunter, don’t you?”

Yeah, so?

“So you can’t leave the ship.”

Ghost, you don’t have the authority to stop me even if I was planning on leaving.

“He doesn’t, but until you can get enough core members to agree that you’re able to command once again, I do have the authority to keep you here. The hangar bay will remain locked while you’re down here.”

That’s fine with me.

“You’re up to something; I can tell.”

Of course I’m up to something. I’m always up to something, and right now I’m going to help Brent and Jace learn how to pilot a ship. I don’t actually have to launch the ship to do that.

“That’s fine, but to make sure you don’t try anything sneaky, Ghost will be accompanying you.”

Whatever you say commander, but if you don’t mind my asking, where are you off to in such a hurry?

“I’m looking for Dawna. I have some work for her, but she seems to have disappeared.”

Did you try contacting her through the telegem?

“Yeah, but I get the feeling she’s ignoring me. Maybe you could contact her?”

I doubt it. When I reach out to her I get the sense that she’s still a bit miffed at me for some comment I made when we were in the Nightiger compound.

“Oh well, it was worth a try. If you see her, tell her I’m looking for her and when I find her she’s in deep trouble.”

Tay, if I see her, I’ll tell her that.

Entry 204

“This isn’t the way to the flight deck.”

Did you figure that out all by yourself?

“Where are we going?”

Auxiliary storage bay twelve, that’s were we stored the Fed- Imperiam shuttle that we liberated. It’s stored there until one of us can check it to be sure Crystal didn’t leave us any surprises.

“And we’re going to this shuttle because?”

Two reasons, the first is because the controls are set up so that they can be adjusted for any species to use. The second reason is because I plan on making sure it's safe, personally. Ah, here we are, bay twelve.

“I don’t remember this ship from my timeline.”

Well, since you had the Blade Hunter I probably used this ship when I went to rescue Jace and Brent.

“And I still believe that was an unnecessary risk.”

“Watch it kid, if it wasn’t for Prowler and his taking that risk, I’d be dead now.”

“Yeah, so? It’s not like either of you've joined the team, and your ship was so badly damaged that there’s no guarantee that it’ll ever fly again.”

“The Commander also saved the lives of the Snarions. So Jace is right, the risk your commander took was worth it.”

“Until you’ve lived my life you have no right-.”

Ghost, you have no concept of how bad life can be. So what if you’ve had to live the same timeline over and over. At least you weren’t a slave. You had family and friends around you all the time. If they died, you’d join them again when time looped back. Jace, Brent, and Jen have known more suffering in their short lives than you can even imagine. Now get aboard, sit down, and shut up. You’re here to keep an eye on me, nothing more.

“What makes you think you can give me orders? Until you’re reinstated as commander you don’t have the right.”

“Actually, now that you’re aboard the shuttle he has every right.”

Well hello Dawna, imagine finding you here, Rusty's looking for you and he says that when he finds you you’re in deep trouble.

“What else is new? Trouble is my calling card.”

Have you completed the search for surprises?

“Ages ago, I’ve even finished the pre-flight checks.”

“So you were planning on leaving! It won’t work, Dad locked the launch bay doors.”

“Is that so? Well, I guess he did us a favor then.”

“What?”

Brent, take the co-pilot seat and try to watch what Dawna does while she's flying. Jace, sit behind him in the navigator’s position; you can be up front when we take off next time. Oh, and all three of you might need these.

“What is this?”

“A space sickness bag? I don’t need this.”

Dawna’s piloting skills are famous; even I may need one. Now get strapped in because we’re taking off.

“And just where are you planning on sitting?”

I’m going to be up there in the turret in case anyone is stupid enough to fire at us. All right Dawna, let’s go.

“Rusty’s on to us. He’s trying to override the hangar door.”

Input the emergency code, there’s no overriding that.

“The upper hangar door is open. Hold on, because here we go!”

Oh damn, I was afraid she’d pull this. Dawna, you don’t have to do your impression of a dead fowlen falling up.

“I’m not. If I were flying that maneuver, I’d be flipping the nose over the tail as well. This is a simple spinning top maneuver.”

“Bluerrrgh”

Sounds like someone couldn’t take it.

“That was just Ghost. To tell the truth, I’m finding this sensation to be exhilarating!”

“Really? Well then, I guess I should kick it up a bit.”

Great, I think I’ll take a short nap. Wake me when we land or if you need me to shoot something.

“Will do. Ok Brent, watch this. It takes real skill to roll the shuttle nose over tail, and continue to have the proper speed for exit velocity.”

Entry 205

“Unidentified shuttle, you have entered Vesuvian space, please identify yourself.”

“What the?!”

“Prowler, wake up, we’ve got trouble!”

What is it?

“Someone parked a very large space station in orbit over Vesuvia!”

You’re kidding right?

“Would you wake up and look! Not only am I not kidding, but they just locked multiple weapons on us!”

Full stop! There’s no way we can avoid being hit and the shields on this thing wouldn’t protect us from that. Open two comm. channels, one to that station and the other to the Snarions at Hollow Base. Either I’ll be able to talk us out of this or we’ll bluff our way out.

“Shuttle, we have multiple weapons locked on you. Either identify yourself or be destroyed.”

This is F.G.P. shuttle 2422. I haven’t gotten around to naming it yet.

“What does F. G. P. stand for?”

Federation of Galactic Peace, but they were the prior owners.

“Hollow Base is responding.”

You’ve blanked the line so that whoever is on that station can’t hear us right?

“Of course I did, I’m not stupid you know.”

Yeah, get back to me about that later.

“P’ayn Starspirit here, Commander.”

Is the Guardian capable of limited movement?

“Yes sir, but just barely, and we don’t have any weapons yet.”

Can you fake a weapons lock?

“Yeah, but as I said it won’t do any good since we can’t fire.”

Let’s hope that a two will do. Just in case I’m going to try and get us a pair of aces as well. Move the Guardian to the space lock but keep it concealed within the holo-shield. I’ll contact you again when I need you. Ghost; open two new channels, one to the Sundowner Cantina and the other to Gateway Station.

“I can’t, Dare destroyed the hyper net so we only have in system communications.”

Then open the damn channel to the Sundowner and pray that Arlen isn’t too busy to take the call! Oh, and reconnect to that station out there.

Vesuvia Station, can you provide us with a bit of information about yourselves? We were just here a few weeks ago, and you weren’t here then.

“This is Phantom Station. We’re a fully mobile space fortress and dry dock facility. We arrived in orbit a few days ago, but you won’t be able to take that information back to your Imperiam masters.”

Guardian, drop holo-shield and lock all weapons onto that station!

“What!”

I am Commander Prowler Lightstripe, and you are in my territory.

“Sir, I’ve got the Sundowner Cantina on the line.”

Arlen, what's the story with this station?

“All of you stand down. Captain Tasmin, I suggest you allow Commander Lightstripe to land. After all, he is the company president.”

“As you command, Executive Sundowner. Shuttle 2422 you're cleared to land in docking bay one. Docking control will guide you in.”

Thanks Arlen, but what did you mean about me being the company president?

“Phantom Station is what is left of ShadowTech. Most of the people working there are former Fyretech employees. The station randomly moves from location to location to keep the Imperiam from finding it. Their primary purpose is to supply illegal parts to smugglers, freedom fighters, refugees, and drifters that are working against the Imperiam.”

Thanks again for the help, we’ll be down later to have a long chat.

“Sounds good kid, just be sure to show up during the day when business is light.”

You’ve got it, Prowler out. Ghost; re-open the link to the Guardian. Captain Starspirit, stand down and return the Guardian to its dock. If we get lucky I may be able to get you some help repairing her, Prowler out. Dawna, take us in but do it slowly in case some fool tech decides to help you with a tractor beam.

“It wasn’t my fault.”

What wasn’t?

“Uh, never mind.”

Entry 206

Brent, Jace, and Ghost, I want you to stay with the shuttle.

“That’s fine by me. I’d rather not have to be around too many humans.”

“It isn’t fine with me. Dad told me to keep an eye on you and that’s what I plan to do.”

I want you on the shuttle in case the three of you have to get out of here in a hurry. Arlen might know this Captain Tasmin, but I don’t. The last thing I want to be worrying about is whether the three of you are safe. Ghost, you're the only one that has enough flight experience to do that.

“What about the two of you? If we leave, then you’re on your own.”

“Don’t worry about us, Brent, just get the shuttle to Hollow Base and you’ll be fine. We have our telegems to protect us.”

Actually that might not be a bad idea, As soon as we’ve cleared the landing bay take off and go to the base. If everything goes well here, we’ll meet you there. If it doesn’t at least you three can seal off the base and hold out until the Guardian is repaired, or the rest of the team finally comes to rescue you.

“Catch.”

What’s this?

“I did a bit of packing before we left. You’ll find your blades as well as your blaster and a couple of different uniforms I found in your closet. I suggest you wear the one with the cape since I’ll be wearing the matching outfit.”

“Wow!”

“Get a good look boys, you’re not likely to see me like this very often.”

Hey, hey, hey! Give the lady a bit of privacy.

“There, I’ve changed, what’s taking you so long?”

You do realize what you’re wearing don’t you?

“It’s just a variation of the standard Shadow Runner uniform.”

Ah, no. That is the royal uniform of Clan Lightstripe. The only ones that are allowed to wear it are Lord and Lady Lightstripe. By putting that on you’re saying that you have accepted me as your mate.

“So what you’re saying is that by wearing this I have, in effect, married you?”

That’s right.

“Seems like a strange custom to me.”

Well, when you consider that most of the population of Shendria doesn’t wear any clothing it isn’t as odd.

“When do we get to go there?”

Well, Jace, I’d place a wager on never. However, I’ve learned its best not to make such bets. Now Dawna, are you going to change again or have you decide to accept me as your mate?

“Idiot. It’s obvious that Trace and Tye got their brains from their mother since you don’t seem to have any. Yes, I’ve accepted you. You’re a planetary Lord. I like your kids, and you have a great crew with a wonderful ship. What more could a pirate queen, like myself, want in a trophy husband. Now hurry up and get changed so that we can meet with the captain of this mobile junk heap.”

As you command, my Lady.

“Are those two insane or just weird?”

“I don’t know. They were both dead in the time lines I’m from.”

“It’s been my experience that all humans are strange and I’ve stopped trying to understand them.”

Alright, I’m ready. Now remember, we don’t want a repeat of our last diplomatic meeting.

“If you'd let me resolve that incident, things would have gone much better.”

True, but you’d have been bored out of your mind if Jerod hadn’t been around to spice things up.

“You’re sick, do you know that?”

I am not. I’m crazy and a bit of insane but I have never been sick.

“You never ate any of Jerod’s cooking then.”

“If you two have finished changing, I’d like to get over to Hollow Base.”

What’s wrong with you, Ghost?

“You two act as though everything is a game. You could be shot the moment you step out off the ramp and you’re worried that Dawna might cause some sort of incident. Not to mention that you both just stripped completely naked in front of us as though you had no decency. Hell, Dawna even told us to get a good look!”

“I’m not complaining.”

“I may not like humans but that doesn’t mean I can’t admire their bodies at times.”

“Shut up you two! You just got married yet you’re acting as though it was an every day occurrence. You’re carrying swords and shields instead of heavy assault rifles. You’re discussing things that took place hundreds of years ago as though it was yesterday and- and-”.

Are you through? If not, too bad. First off, yeah we know how much danger we might be in but we’ve lived with danger and death for a very long time. We deal with the feeling in different ways. Personally, I get depressed and become self-absorbed but that’s in times when I’m completely safe. Right now I’m completely alert. We won’t get shot as we step off the ramp because we won’t be solid. I’m not really worried about Dawna causing an incident; such discussions are our way of preparing. By remembering past encounters, we can better notice similar warning signs about the current situation.

“That’s-”.

“Shut up. We may have been dead in the timelines where you grew up, but I’d think you’d at least have a bit of respect for your superiors.”

As for our modesty, I can’t speak for Dawna, but after living for a couple years on Shendria nudity becomes less of an issue. We’re acting like our marriage was an everyday occurrence because we know each other so well. Technically speaking, our families arranged our marriage a very long time ago it just took us a bit of time to figure that out. I may not have asked Dawna to marry me in any traditional sense, but that’s all right since she didn’t accept that way either. I’m sure we’re both going to have a lot to talk about on that subject but this isn’t the time or place. As for our weapons the only reason we’re carrying our blasters is for show. The last thing we want to do is get into a fight where we might damage the station and get ourselves, and a lot of others, killed. Swords may be messy and extremely personal but they’re just as effective, as long as one has the proper skill. Any fool can shoot a blaster from a distance. It takes a special kind of insanity to be able to fight up close, and have to look into a person’s eyes as you kill them.

“Finally, as to our discussing things that happened thousands of years ago, you have to remember that to us it has only been a few months. Sorry to interrupt, like that, but I noticed the Captain has arrived and is waiting for us.”

Not a problem, Lady Lightstripe.

Captain Tasmin, we’re sorry we kept you waiting. We haven’t station trained one of the cubs we brought along with us. So, if you’ll lead the way we’ll clear the hangar so that the rest of my crew can continue to Hollow Base.

“Of course, Commander.

End Log

Entry 207

So Captain, how long are you going to remain here at Vesuvia?

“Ordinarily we would orbit Accordia and send agents here to collect and deliver our goods. Now, with a significant portion of the Hyper Net destroyed, I figured we’d stay here indefinitely. The only way the Imperiam will be able to reach Vesuvia is if they send a Freem equipped ship to dump a Hyper Net relay satellite. Fortunately, we have enough firepower to destroy anyone that tries something like that.”

Crystal could send a ship to Accordia, Snarion, or Arrebo and then assemble her forces there for an all out attack.

“I hadn’t thought of that.”

“You should set up guard stations in all the systems that are within two or three jumps of Vesuvia.”

“We don’t have enough people to accomplish something like that.”

Recruit locals from the systems where available. That way you won’t have to spread your people out as much.

“There are still a lot of uninhabited systems to cover.”

“Stop being so negative and just get on it! It doesn’t take much more than a transport crew running a weeklong patrol in one system and then moving them to another system to reduce boredom. One week in a system with a habitable planet and then two in systems that are uninhabited. Back in my day, if Kindra had the brains to set up such a system, I’d never have been able to raid all the bases that I did. You can’t just sit in a single system and prepare for an attack. You have to know exactly where the attack is coming from.”

Don’t try to argue, you’ll just loose.

“Just who are you two, and why did Arlen say that you're the president of ShadowTech? As far as I knew Executive Sundowner was the president of this company.”

I’m Lord Prowler Lightstripe, formerly Prowler the Homeless One. And this is my mate, Lady Dawna Lightstripe, formerly Dawna Destruction of the Trouble Maker pirates.

“Uh huh, and I’m Darrin Fireshadow.”

“Really? I must say this is one clever disguise. Just one question; how did you get here before we did?”

You asked for it. Dawna would you call him? You’re the only one that’s had experience sending long distance mental messages.

“Done, and I let Rusty know that we’re alright and he can stop worrying.”

Great, now we’re going to have everyone here.

“I doubt that, they’re still busy trying to rebuild the Royal City. I bet only three or four people show up.”

Only three or four more, one more is bad enough.

“Like he was going to come alone. You know how he is. If there’s a chance to get out of the work that Rusty is forcing on them, he's going to save as many as he can.”

So whom else can we expect?

“M.J., Ice, and possibly Spike. They’ve been spending a lot of time hanging out together.”

Well, I guess that isn’t so bad.

“What is wrong with you two? First, you claim to be some dead freedom fighters. Now you’re talking like you contacted someone, which is insane. I don’t care what Arlen said, you two are not staying on my station. And don’t think I was scared of that holographic display you rigged down there on the moon. I’m not stupid you know.”

Could have fooled me. This station is the property of ShadowTech and as the founder and president then technically it belongs to me.

“Technically the station belongs to Fyretech and most of the crew are from Arrebo. They are loyal to me, not to you, so what makes you think you have any right to come in here-”.

“Captain, we have three starfighters inbound they dropped out of altered space on a trajectory from Accordia. ”

“Destroy them! And get security up here to take these two prisoner.”

“Sir, I don’t think destroying them would be such a good idea.”

“I didn’t ask for your opinion just follow orders!”

“Our guns won’t fire.”

“Why the hell not?”

“Because the targeting computers have identified the fighters as friendly.”

“What!”

“Identification confirmed. The lead fighter, designation DX-01, is the original Firebyrd prototype code named Flashfire. The pilot’s call sign is Champion and the registered owner is Darrin Fireshadow. The second fighter, designation DX-02, is also a Firebyrd prototype; the registered pilot is M. J. Hazard, call sign Joker. The last fighter, designation FB-03M, is a known ADL modified Firebyrd named Mud Slide. The pilot’s call sign is Ice and the registered owner is Icebreaker Summerrevel.”

“I don’t care who those ships used to belong to. Those people have been dead for a thousand years!”

“Sir, we just gave them clearance to land.”

“You idiot! I’ll have you ejected out the nearest airlock. No, I’d better do it myself since none of you can be trusted to get it done otherwise! But first, I’m going to deal with you two!”

“Hey Commander, you having a bit of trouble with some of my people?”

Good of you to show up. Yeah, the good Captain here seems to believe that he’s Darrin Fireshadow.

“No kidding? Damn, it seems like I put on a bit around the middle.”

“Not to mention the fact that you got shorter and lost most of your hair.”

“A couple thousand years can do that to a human.”

“Hello, Captain Tasmin. When I heard you’d arrived in this sector I figured I catch a ride with Dare so that I could pick up that ship I gave you to rebuild.”

“Spike? What? But-but . . .”

Looks like a case of brain lock to me. Ah well, I guess we’ll just have to get used to having that affect on people. So Dare, I guess that means you’re in charge here since you’re the CEO of Fyretech.

“Oh thanks, you give me an excuse to escape from all the work Rusty has been pushing on me, only to push more work on to me.”

Yeah, that sounds about right. I’ll have Captain Starspirit move the Guardian out here to the dry docks. This station is likely to have more of the parts on hand that they need to repair her. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have an appointment to keep at the Sundowner and I don’t want to get in your way.

“Thank you again for all of this. When I’m done here you owe all of us a drink.”

Sounds good to me.

“So how are you going to get over to Hollow Base?”

This is a Fyretech station, I’m sure Dawna and I can find a shuttle around here somewhere.

“Yuh mus' be Lord Lightstripe. Arlen told me you’d be arrivin’ soon. Please, follow me to the lift. I’m sure you’d like to clean up before yer meetin’.”

Thank you-

“Roam. I’m in charge O' security here’n the backstage area.”

Thank you, Roam.

“Yer welcome, Lord Lightstripe.”

Please, call me Prowler.

“Yeah, if you keep calling him Lord it might go to his head. Though I won’t object if you refer to me as Lady Dawna.”

Speaking of people letting titles go to their head.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

Nothing. Nothing at all. The rest of my party consists of Jace Brushwolf, Brent Tauros, and Ghost Darkmane.

“Kay, I probly don’ need tuh say this, but please don’ disturb the performers and don’ start any fights or I’ll toss you out. Brent, don’ think I can’t, jus’ cause yer bigger’n me. I’ve bounced creatures twice my size.”

“I’m sure you have. But have you ever pulled out a transport engine and carried it across a maintenance hanger, under full gravity, barehanded?”

If you two decide that you have to prove who’s stronger, I can teleport you both out to the Mesa of Lost Souls and leave you there. The one that ends up carrying the loser’s dead body back to the cantina wins.

“Just how long a hike is that?”

“Brent, shut up and get in the lift. The heat is obviously affecting your brain. I’m sure you two could battle for hours on end, and be evenly matched, but it’s too hot and we have other business to attend to.”

Entry 209

It’s strange, even though I’m surrounded by some of the lowest forms of life in the galaxy, I almost feel like I’m home. The others decided to remain downstairs until evening. I guess they don’t care for the heat. However, I want to talk to Arlen and the best time to do that is during the middle of the day, when business is at its lowest point.

“Talking to yourself again?”

Of course, if I stop now people might think I’ve lost my mind.

“I hadn’t thought of it that way.”

So how’s business?

“You know, I’d almost forgotten what it was like to have a packed cantina. Now that you’ve driven the Imperiam out of the system, the entire Bazaar has been busier then since before Kindra rose to power.”

So, I came to talk to you about a new gate.

“Yeah, it seems that I’ve got some pests sneaking into the garden. But don’t worry, I’ve already taken steps to close it.”

What? I didn’t realize it was possible to close a gate.

“Of course a gate can be closed. You just have to know the proper way to weld it shut.”

But there are a lot of innocent people that need help on the other side of that gate. I brought a couple of them here to plead their case.

“It won’t do any good, I’ve already started the process.”

So stop it.

“Listen, the people on the other side of that gate will just have to find their own ‘Chosen One’. I know you feel like you have to right every wrong in the universe, but that just isn’t possible. You’ve got your plate full just protecting this galaxy, and already you’ve started branching out to the Tabor Galaxy as well.”

Maybe I can’t save everyone, but I can save as many people as possible before I die. Just meet the people I brought with me.

“It won’t do any good. Like I said, I’ve already started the process.”

“So stop it, you’re right here so obviously it isn’t too late.”

“Yes, I’m here, but Arlen isn’t”

You are Arlen.

“No I'm RLN-1. Thanks to your pioneering work with memcrystals Arlen was able to create me to fill in for him when he’s off planet. When he returns he uses a memory implantation device to catch up on what’s been happening here and I go off line until he needs me again.”

Damn.

“You might as well relax, Arlen was already headed out of the system when you arrived. By now he’s already procured a sample of Exp. 39 and is closing the gate.”

“Hey Prowler, is this Arlen?”

Yeah. Arlen, meet Ghost, Rusty’s son from the future. Ghost, this is Arlen.

“That’s odd.”

What is?

“Sometimes I see things that are about to happen.”

It’s because you have a shard of the telegem of time. It sometimes gives flashed of insight about events that may happen. So what did you see?

“Arlen being killed in an explosion. He built a bomb and sets it to explode but as he releases it a ship appears and he crashed on it. The bomb then explodes destroying the ship and Arlen as well. I thought it was strange, since most of the time the things I see happen within a day. However, since Arlen is here, he’s not likely to be out in space for some time.”

Come on we’ve got to go!

“Is there anything you can do? After all, we’re talking about a very large Exp. 39 bomb. It’ll have about the same amount of explosive power as the blast that sent you through time.”

I don’t know. What I do know is I don’t have much time. I’ve got to go back to Snarion, for the Shadow Runner, if I’m going to have any hope of saving him.

“I missed something didn’t I?”

Entry 210

“Are you going to contact Dare?”

No, I want him to stay at Phantom Station for the same reason that I left the other three at the Sundowner. I just wish you’d remained behind as well.

“Listen, if you’re going to do something stupid then I feel it’s my duty to be there to pull your tail out of the fire. So what are we doing exactly?”

Arlen, that is the real Arlen, is out at the Gateway building an Exp. 39 bomb in order to close the gate to Confederation space. However he’s going to crash on the hull of a Confederation ship and die if we don’t get there in time.

“First, how can you be sure Ghost’s vision is correct and second, why aren’t we going directly to Gateway?”

Ghost has a shard of the telegem of time. He didn’t realize that there were two Arlens so he was confused. He thought I could help clear up the confusion since it didn’t seem like I could get killed this time. The reason that I’m going after the Shadow Runner is because I don’t know how close Arlen’s bomb is to detonating. Sure I plan on saving him, but if we arrive at Gateway just as the bomb explodes we’ll be killed as well. This way we run the risk of getting there too late, but if we get there in time the combination of the absorption field and armor might give us enough protection to survive this.

“Or we might be killed anyway.”

Yeah, but that’s nothing new.

“Welcome back, I suppose you had a good time while the rest of us had to work our tails off?”

Sorry about that Tye, I’d have taken you and Trace along, but I figured Rusty would have caught us for sure.

“Well, you’ve chosen a perfect time to return then. He’s currently in the Royal City directing the clean up.”

Really? I feel sorry for the Snarions. So who’s currently on board?

“Trace, Stealth, White Fox, and Quiver. Technically Quiver is ‘on’ the ship but he isn’t aboard. He’s out on one of the wings with a metal rod trying to ‘catch something tasty’. Somehow I doubt he’s going to catch anything since he isn’t using any bait.

That’ll do, get everyone to the bridge, we’ll launch as soon as I get there. Prowler out.

“So we’ll be stranding everyone else here?”

Better stranded here than dead.

“I see your point. I’m setting down in your private hangar so we can get to the bridge faster.”

It’s going to be a tight fit with my fighter in there.

“Don’t worry we’ll fit.”

SSSCCCRRREEEEEEEEECH

“See.”

You do realize the cost of repainting my fighter is going to be coming out of your pay.

“You mean you’re going to start paying us to work for you?”

Uh, never mind.

Entry 211

So that’s the mission, if any of you want to leave I won’t hold it against you. I can operate the Runner on my own if need be. So, you don’t need to feel any guilt if you choose to stay here and help Rusty with the reconstruction project.

“Yeah right, like that’s going to happen. I guess I could find a secluded cove to continue my fishing, still, this sounds much more exciting.”

“Quiver is right. We’re not letting you do this on your own.”

So everyone is in agreement?

“It looks that way.”

Well then, let’s get underway. Trace, power up the engines. Stealth, contact Rusty and let him know that we’re leaving. White Fox, run a system check to make sure the armor, shields, and absorption field are all working perfectly. Tye, charge the freem drive. Dawna, get us out of this pond.

“What about me?”

Quiver, find a seat and hold on. You’re in for a very bumpy ride. Oh, and while you’re at it, check on the weapons systems. We might be in for a fight after we rescue Arlen.”

“You got it, Commander.”

Entry 212

This is it, we’ve reached Gateway and it looks like we’re just in time. Stealth, open a full broadcast link.

“I’ve had a good long life, if this is where I’m meant to die, then so be it. At least I’ve stopped the humans from invading my galaxy.”

Arlen, you’re not going to die here. Confederation ship, can you get your engines back online?

“Yes, but it’ll take fifteen minutes.”

Never mind. Archangel, get out here and begin towing that ship towards the safe zone. Be sure to keep your energy absorption field at full power.

“Just what do you think you’re going to do, Prowler?”

I’m going to use the Runner to absorb as much of the blast as possible. I'll also be focusing as much energy as I can, into my own tractor beams to push you out of the blast zone.

“Are you insane! That’s an Exp. 39 bomb with ten times the power of the blast that pushed you through time!”

Then I guess it’s a good thing I’m bonded with the Kah Har God of death. I suggest you start praying to your own God of luck, because I’m already in position.

“What’s going on?”

“That fool is using his own ship as a physical shield between us and a bomb that I launched to destroy that gateway.”

All crew brace for impact!

“Archangel, pitch up thirty degrees and starboard forty five degrees, you’re on a collision course with the station.”

“Prowler, can you hear me?”

Yeah we’re here, the blast overloaded the absorption field and made a mess of my belly armor, but other than a few minor injuries we’re all right.

“I’m glad to hear that.”

So what’s the situation over there?

“I don’t really know. However, since Gateway falls under Shendrian jurisdiction, you’d be the highest-ranking individual here. That makes you the person these people need to talk to about forming any kind of treaty.”

So you want me over here then?

“You have transporter technology?”

Ah, no. At least I don’t think so, but then I’m a bit behind the times when it comes to technology.

“Then how did you get here?”

I teleported over from my ship; before you ask, the difference is teleportation is mental while transport would be technological in nature. Several members of my crew will be coming over, aboard a shuttle, to help get your ship back online and to make sure your former owners didn’t leave any booby traps behind. We can also remove your leash bombs and repair the damage that the Confederation did to your genetic structure. Then we can discuss any treaty you would like to propose.

“Lord Lightstripe, once again several humans escaped in a shuttle that reached the gateway. We have no idea whether they died or not. However, we're still detecting six humans, besides yourself and Arlen, onboard.”

Thank you Gateway, I’ll deal with that right now, Prowler out. So Captain, it seems you still have some human problems to deal with. Would you like my help?

“No! That is to say, the humans that remain are on our side. If you’ll follow me I’ll take you to the bridge to meet them.”

Just a moment, I need to get changed. I know how upset your crew will be if they see that you’ve let two humans aboard. There, now shall we go?

“You’re a shifter too?”

Yeah, and there are several other abilities and titles that have been attributed to me. Now, you were going to introduce us to the rest of your crew.

Entry 213

“So, how're you going to convince the council to allow you to bring Phantom Station out here to Gateway?”

I’m not going to.

“Do you realize how long it’ll take us to tow them back to Vesuvia at sub-light speeds? There’s no way they’re going to be able to use their hyper drive engines without an established route. ”

That’s simple Dawna, I intend to tow their ship through altered space.

“That; is impossible.”

I suggest you strap in and hold on because I’m linking and then we’ll be jumping.

“I’m telling you it can’t be done! You can’t tow a ship through altered space!”

I towed your pod when I escaped from Kindra.

“I- but...”

It’s just a matter of getting real close and extending the Runner’s shields around the Final Voyage.

“It isn’t going to work. The shields on the belly are severely damaged. We’ll be lucky if WE survive the trip back to Vesuvia.”

Mental link established. Moving into position.

“Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!”

Distance between hulls now one meter, engaging tractor beams.

“This is insane!”

Tractor beams engaged and locked. Extending the shield envelope to surround the Final Voyage. Shield established. Shield integrity and fifteen percent, diverting power from weapons and real space engines. Shield integrity at twenty six percent. All crew assemble on the bridge. Repeat, all crew to the bridge.

“Prowler, there’s got to be another way!”

“Dawna, what's he doing?”

I’m shutting down all the life support systems except those on the bridge. Shield integrity as forty-six percent. Hold on, this is going to be a very rough ride.

Opening communications link to Final Voyage. Skip, this is it, raise your shields.

“We’re bringing our shields online.”

Combined shield integrity sixty one percent. Activate real space engines in three, two, one. Engines are at full power. Bringing the Freem engine online. Freem engine activated. I feel the current. Skip, turn starboard thirteen degrees.

“Are you telling me that wreck is doing the steering?”

That’s right; until we jump they’re towing us. One minute to jump point. We’re just acting as their Freem engine. I have the point prepare for Freem jump. Now!

“We’re all going to die!”

All systems intact and I can see Vesuvia’s gravity well. Dropping out of Freem, now. Tractor beams released. Skip, you're free and clear to continue to Vesuvia. Once you reach orbit call Phantom Station and ask Dare for docking clearance. He’ll direct you in from there.

“Where are you going?”

I left most of my crew stranded on a planet in a nearby system. I’ve got to go and retrieve them. Don’t worry, Dare will take good care of you and we’ll return shortly to repair the Runner as well. Trace, be sure to contact Ghost and tell him I’ll be down to pick his group up as soon as I retrieve Rusty.

“Affirmative, just make sure that Rusty doesn’t ground you again.”

That’s not likely to happen, Shadow Runner out. I’m restoring life support to all decks.

“What is our shield integrity at now?”

You don’t want to know. Re-engaging Freem drives for Snarion jump.

Dawna and Tye, take the shuttle and Blade Hunter down to pick up the rest of the team. I’m going to find a very quiet spot and collapse.

“I do not wish to interrupt you milord, however; I am detecting no less than eleven craft approaching us at high speed. Nine star fighters and one heavy transport. They are hailing us? Shall I open a channel?”

Yes.

“So you’ve decided to return? And here I thought I’d have to hunt you down.”

White Fox, open the hangar bay and let Rusty land.

“It was a lucky break that the base where we’d stored the Guardian’s Twin Needle fighters was still secure, otherwise we’d still be marooned.”

Well, that accounts for three of the fighters; what about the others?

“It was a big base. So we allocated fighters to each of the Snarions on the team.”

You still have three fighters too many.

“I’m flying your personal fighter. I didn’t know that every graduate of the Snarion Academy received a starfighter.”

I thought they’d rotated my fighter back into the ranks after I’d returned to Accordia.

“Nope, it seems that they had kept it in reserve for as long as you were alive. Then since you were a galactic hero they decided to preserve it permanently. Anyway, Errant is flying Trace’s fighter and Nature is in his own.”

I don’t remember Nature receiving a fighter.

“Technically I did, but I wasn’t allowed to have it painted in standard Guardian colors”

I guess I should have paid more attention. I suppose the heavy transport is the one that we liberated from the slavers and is carrying the rest of the team?

“That’s right. There’s also a relief group aboard who are planning to continue on to Hollow Base. They thought they’d give the group aboard the Guardian a chance to return to Snarion for awhile.”

That’s fine, we’ll be headed back to Hollow Base just as soon as you’re-

“Shard! What did you do! The bottom of the ship is a mess!”

Rescued Arlen, another group of refugees, and another ship to add to our growing fleet of allies. I’ll tell you all about it, later. Stealth, close the link. Dawna, you’re in charge. I’m going to go and get some rest. If Rusty tries to give you any trouble remind him that you’ve commanded a large ship before. If he doesn’t back off threaten him with the possibility that you’ll revert to your pirate persona. If you really need me, and when I say that what I mean is that you won’t need me, I’ll be in my quarters. The only ones that will have access are Trace and Tye.

“What?”

And that’s because if you want in you don’t have to bother with the door.

“Oh, all right then.”

I’ll see you after I’ve had a long nap.

Entry 215

It is early morning, GS, and I feel much better now. Perhaps I’m even going to be able to get back to a regular schedule. Computer, open file designated “to do list”. Tay, that’s a bit more than I expected. Reorganize list by crewmember.

To Do List:

Prowler:

Set up Evolver Chambers to repair The Final Voyage’s crew.

Begin removing leash bombs.

Meet with Arlen.

Collect Ghost from Vesuvia.

Meet Dare to discuss replacing the Final Voyage’s engines.

Check status of the Runner and how long it’ll take to repair her.

Dawna:

If you’re not fully rested get back to sleep I’ve got things under control

I’m starting the process to remove the leashes, meet with me ASAP.

Disregard my last message. You go ahead and get some rest; I can handle this.

Rusty is working to educate the F.V. crew, check his progress.

Dare is looking for you, something about new starfighters.

Computer, readjust the list so that Dare’s entries are last. I’ll take care of his newest spacecraft crisis after the more important requests. Condense all further messages that have repeated requests for information to a single message with a number representing the number of times the message is repeated.

Rusty:

Since I’m not allowed to bother you, I’m helping educate the F.V. crew.

6m: Contact Dawna, and let her know, that I know what I’m doing.

3m: Go get Ghost; I don’t like the idea of him being on Vesuvia alone.

Dare is bothering me about some new starfighter. Make him stop.

Trace:

I’m replacing the Voyage’s engines and Tye is replacing the compcore.

2m: Dare has a new starfighter project that he wants approved.

We’ve found a potential problem in an aft hangar of the F.V.

The problems are stowaways, four humans and one robotic.

5m: Human, Confed, bounty hunter, stowaways.

They’re in bad shape. Jen’s taking care of them, under extreme protest.

They’re stable, for now, I’ve had them placed in medtubes.

I’m moving them to the Runner for protection until you can deal with it.

Errant:

24m: When are you going to go and get Ghost? It had better be soon!

Blue:

Gauge and I are helping to keep the former slaves occupied.

Jen:

I’m setting up on the ConFed ship, until they get a new “trustworthy” Dr.

5m: Trace is making me treat a human Feddy. I’m not happy.

6m: I don’t care if three of them are in stasis; I want them gone!

The garbage is stable and in stasis. Trace is moving them to the Runner.

M.J.:

I’ve tested the new Dart fighters and all systems check out.

3m: Dare wants to requisition Darts for the team. He just needs your approval.

Spike:

I’ve retrieved Star-Thorn from Phantom Station. I need your approval to bring it aboard.

White Fox:

Every one is busy and I’ve been left in charge.

32m Help! I don’t know what I’m doing!

Capt. Skip:

9m: I’d just like to thank you again for all your help.

Dare:

I’ve contacted the Phoenix and it’s on its way here.

Dawna told me about scratching your fighter, so I’m repainting it.

The repairs and parts replacements for the Freedom are complete.

The repairs on T’yer’s Hope shuttle are completed, including new paint.

20m: Phantom Station has a large surplus of Dart starfighters.

14m: I have a plan for the Darts, but you need to approve it.

7m: I’d like to get my hands on that new transport that Trace found. The Valhalla is a bounty hunting ship!

9m: How long do you plan to sleep?

Fine, I’ll be on Phantom Station, contact me as soon as you wake up.

Tay, first, I’ll meet with White Fox. Then I’ll check on the Runner’s status. After that I’ll go dirt side to get Ghost, Jace, and Brent. When I get back I’ll meet with Dawna and then with Dare. Finally, I’ll deal with the whole Confederation bounty hunter stowaway thing.

End Log

Entry 216

G’morning White Fox, I hear you’re in charge?

“Thank the Gods! Dawna left me in charge and I really don’t know what I’m doing!”

So where are we?

“We’re docked at Hollow Base.”

And where’s the rest of the crew?

“Scattered between the Final Voyage, Phantom Station, and the Park.”

How much damage did I do to the ship and how long will it take to repair?

“According to Dare, the energy absorbing armor on the belly is shot and it can’t be repaired. A crew from Phantom Station is replacing it with standard armor plating. He says it’ll take a little over a month to finish.”

Is there anyone left onboard?

“Only you and me at the moment.”

Sounds like you have everything under control. I’ll be taking the shuttle down to Vesuvia to pick up Ghost, before Rusty and Errant get really upset about me leaving him there.

“That might be a problem.”

I probably shouldn’t ask, this but why is that a problem?

“Dare has all the ships, except the Blade Hunter, over at Phantom Station. He decided that they all needed a coat of paint.”

Then I’ll just take Blade.

“Yip, about that, Dawna has it over at the Final Voyage.”

I’m going to have to speak to Dare about this. Contact Spike and T’yer for me. The first one to respond wins.

“I’ve got them both on the comm. T’yer was the first to answer if that’s important.”

You have permission to bring your ships aboard whenever you’re ready. However, if one of you isn’t busy at the moment, I could use a transport.

“I’m not busy commander, I was just running a few checks on Hope’s new systems so I can be there in a couple of minutes.”

“Thanks T’yer, I’m helping Dare with his painting project at the moment anyway, Spike out.”

Well, that settles that. White Fox you’re in charge.

“But…”

You’re doing fine. If you get bored, you can go and get a headset. That way you can continue to monitor the ship’s systems without being confined to the bridge. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a shuttle to catch.

End Log

Entry 217

Whoa! Now that's a bright shuttle.

“Yeah, I know. I thought Dare planned to repaint the firebird pattern, but no, he’s decided that every team member is going to have their own paint scheme.”

And because your Guardian uniform was yellow with cream trim Dare decided that would be your paint scheme. Oh boy, I’m sure there's going to be a lot of complaints about this. He should have cleared this... I’m afraid to ask, but what color is he painting my fighter?

“Black with white trim.”

I guess I can live with that. Still, I think he should have waited for me to give him permission.

“What's our destination?”

First, I need to meet with Dawna. She’s aboard the Final Voyage.

End Log

Entry 218

“Good, you brought T’yer with you. I need him to help me remove these leashes before they explode.”

Oh, I was just going to check on your progress and then go down and get the rest of our crew. No reason for them to be relaxing at the cantina and drinking up what little credit we have.

“I’m doing alright, but with T’yer to help me, I’ll be able to finish this a lot sooner.”

Fine I’ll take the Blade.

“No you won’t. I need the medical tubes to generate the tissue samples.”

Of course, that’s why you had us connect to an airlock rather than landing.

“Right, I remove the bomb and then launch it out the hangar opening. Or I should say the person I removed the bomb from launches it.”

“You could always take the Hope. It’s not like you need me to pilot her for you.”

Are you sure?

“Of course, I wouldn’t even have her if you hadn’t paid for the repairs. Besides, she’s the only ship available. Even though Arlen is a nice guy, the Cantina isn’t exactly a great place to spend a lot of time.”

Thank you T’yer, I’ll make this up to you when I get a chance.

“Just lead me to Tanth, like you promised, and we’ll be even.”

Don’t worry, that's on my list. We would've already gone to get him but other things keep coming up.

End Log

Entry 219

I hope those three haven’t gotten into any trouble while I’ve been gone. If they’ve caused any trouble Arlen will kill me, even if he does consider me to be some “galactic savior”.

“Hey kid, good to see you. You here to find a bunch of AWOL crew?”

No, I thought I’d leave them here with you.

“I’m going to tell Dad you said that.”

Ah, I see you put at least one of them to work.

“That’s right. I got tired of him complaining about how you left him here. Seems he was trying to run your tab through the roof. So, when he asked ho much you owed. I told him you didn’t owe me anything. Then I handed him his bill. I have a holo picture of his reaction on my desk. You should see it when you get a chance.”

Has he finished working off his debt yet?

“Close enough. I’m sure I can let him go if you’ve got work for him.”

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what have you done with the other two?

“They’ve been my personal guests. It’s not often that I get to see people from the old homestead. Though, I guess that'll change once you’ve gotten that cruiser up and running. Anyway they’re upstairs.”

_Up_stairs?

“Oh that’s right, you haven’t seen all the improvements I’ve made. I've completely re-done the top floor. I’ve reduced it to a single suite with a free flowing water fountain and installed a very good air conditioner. It's better than the best rooms at the Tempest. The downside is that there are very few people that can afford the price. So, for the most part, I let my employees and personal guests use it when they need it.”

Well, I guess I’ll just go up let them know that Dare has finished refitting their ship and I’m here to provide them a lift. I’ll let you know when I’m ready to leave, that way Ghost can get as much of his debt paid back as possible.

Gah, I’m going to have to suggest to Arlen that he needs to enclose the stairway. Hey, mind if I come in?

“Who is it?”

Room service, I have a message here for a Mr. Brushwolf or Mr. Tauros.

“Just a minute. Oh, hello Commander.”

Are you all right?

“Yeah, at least I think so, why do you ask?”

Are you sure, this is the first time you’ve referred to me as Commander? Not to mention you’re being nicer than usual.

“Don’t stand there in the doorway you’re letting the cool air out!”

“Sorry about that, please come in. Brent and I were just discussing you and your rather amazing career.”

Really? Just what has Arlen told you?

“Nothing. He actually refused to talk about you. Instead he wanted to know everything we could tell him about the Terran Confederation.”

Ah, that sounds more like the old Jace.

“We’ve been hearing about you from Arn.”

Who?

“Commander Prowler, allow me to introduce myself. I am Arn Brashd of the Nightwanderer band.”

Uh, hello Mr. Brashd. If you don’t mind my asking how do you know about my career?

“It is understandable that you do not recognize me. I am Arakeenian. One of your team members saved my race. The Nightwanderer band was relocated here to Vesuvia. Since that day we have sung of our savior.”

I wouldn’t call myself a savior.

“That does not change the fact that you saved my people. When the Imperiam declared you a criminal we remembered the truth. When they systematically destroyed all information about you we carved your story into the rocks of a thousand worlds.”

You get around quite a bit then.

“No, when we sing, we sing as one people. When we hatch a sand diamond is implanted within our body. Our songs cause the stones to resonate creating a connection to the home world. The songs bind all of us together no matter what world we live on. We felt the song within when you returned. I was elected to be the one to join you upon your sacred journey.”

Wait just a minute. I’m not on some sacred journey; sure I want to bring freedom to the galaxy, but my reasons are entirely selfish. Besides, I can’t accept anyone that has been forced to join my team.

“Your motivation is not important since your goal is noble. I was not forced to be here. Of all the members tested, I was the only one that everyone agreed was the best choice of the Nightwanderer band.”

Fine, you want to be part of the Shadow Runners then you can fill out an application like everyone else. I just came down to pick up Ghost and inform Jace and Brent that their ship has been refit and it is ready for launch. By the way, the Freedom is ready to go, so if you’re ready, I’ll take you back up to retrieve her.

“Is there enough room aboard the Shadow Runner?”

What?

“Arn is a very good story teller. Besides, Arlen told us about your ‘stupid stunt’ that saved a ship full of slaves.”

Great, when we get back up to Hollow Base you can all fill out application forms and-.

“Here you go, we finished filling them out this morning. Arlen was good enough to get copies for us.”

Fine, I’ll interview each of you later when I’ve got time. Just so you know, it seems like I’m loosing control of the team as fast as new members join. On the up side, now that you have plenty of experience with humans who don’t look at you and automatically think slave, you can work with the crew of the Final Voyage. They're going to need help getting past hating all humans as well. The shuttle is on landing pad 331. When you’re ready to go, meet me there.

Entry 220

Yeah, I know it's been over a month since my last entry but I’ve been very busy. All right, so I haven’t been all that busy, it’s just that I didn’t feel like making an entry. I’m just making this entry to bring things up to speed. I’ve finished Arn, Brent, and Jace’s interviews so they are now officially part of the team.

Dare is working on his Dart project. He's modifying the starfighters so that every member of the group will own, and be able to pilot, one. I’ve been checking on his progress from time to time and he's come up with some inventive ideas. His cockpit designs for Shard and Gauge are really interesting. He's having some problems outfitting the small fighters for larger team members like Brent and Arn but I’m sure he’ll figure something out. He was also able to contact the ARC Phoenix. He told me that Arlen had good things to say about the ship’s captain. I’m scheduled to meet with the good Captain Zinge later this afternoon. Hopefully he’ll be willing to patrol a couple of sectors while we’re collecting information on Crystal.

I was going to help Dawna but she told me to get lost since she had the leash removal well in hand. Then I tried to help Tye and Trace with the Independence’s computer core. That's now the official name of the ship formerly known as the Final Voyage. Anyway they quickly kicked me out saying I was just getting in the way. I've placed the stowaways, from the Independence, in cold storage for now. When the ship is repaired and the crew has finally settled in I'll go ahead and wake the bounty hunter. Hopefully the freed furs will have a better opinion of humans by that point and will be less likely to riot.

So I’ve been hanging out with Captain Skip, when he isn't busy with his ship, we've been exploring the park. The rest of the time I've been exploring on my own since no one seems to want me around at the moment. I’d be out in the park right now except Rusty arranged to have a meeting with me this morning.

While I've been waiting for Rusty, I’ve been keeping busy by reprogramming the holographic projectors to make my office look more like a scene from the park. I hate the feeling of being trapped in a box. Oh, I think Rusty has arrived! I’d better finish up here in the computer core and get back down to my office.

Well, don’t just stand there close the door and sit down. Yeah, I know that the monitor is out of place but I haven’t figured out were I can put it so that it's easily seen yet blends in. Now, you wanted to talk to me about something? Oh wait, I think I’ve figured it out!

“Hollow Base is getting rather crowded with all the heavy battleships you seem to be collecting.”

It does seem that way doesn’t it? However, you do realize that the only ship I own is the Shadow Runner, don’t you? The Phoenix technically belongs to Dare, since he's the Fireshadow descendent and rightful owner of Fyretech industries. The Guardian belongs to the Snarion Guardian Corps, and the Independence belongs to Captain Skip and his crew.

“Speaking of the otter, you’ve been spending a lot of time with him lately.”

Yeah. So? You’re the one that keeps telling me that I need to get some rest.

“From what I hear you’ve been doing more than getting a little rest.”

Really? I guess I haven’t heard those rumors yet.

“So is it true?”

Does it really matter?

“Yes it matters. You’re married to Dawna. You’re the commander of the Shadow Runners, Lord of Shendria, and nearly everyone in two galaxies believes that you're a savior.”

I didn’t ask for most of that.

“It doesn’t matter what you wanted you’ve got to deal with the position you’re in. You have to set an example for the crew and the rest of the galaxy.”

And just what is that supposed to mean?

“That means you can’t be sleeping around now that you’re married! Especially when the person you’re sleeping with is male and not even human!”

First of all, I’m not sleeping with Skip, but even if I were it isn’t any of your business. Skip and I are friends. You know, friends, like we used to be before I had to join Kindra to save your life.

“Who the hell asked you to do that? I know I didn’t, because I planned on being the one to save Accordia.”

You wouldn’t have survived the first week. If Kindra hadn’t killed you, you'd have killed yourself.

“So, just what made you so special?”

I spent time at the Snarion Academy where I learned that the Accordan way wasn’t the only way. Hell, you didn’t even realize that I cheated so that I’d win the coin toss.

“That just shows how like Kindra you really were! You’ve always been childish, just look at this office!”

There is nothing wrong with this office.

“Oh yeah? It just screams childish. No one that comes in here is going to take you seriously while you’re leaning back on a mossy stump, behind a pile of rocks, staring into a puddle of water.”

I’m not asking anyone to take me seriously. I designed my space so that I'd be comfortable.

“Comfort has nothing to do with being a commander. You’ve got to set an example so that the people following you remain loyal.”

I don’t demand loyalty or respect. The people following me are here by choice. If anyone has problems with the way I run things then they're welcome to leave at any time. I suppose you force yourself to appear morally perfect, expect your orders to be followed without question, and demand loyalty and respect at all times?

“Damn straight.”

I’m surprised the ADL survived as long as it did.

“You have no place to question MY command. I asked you to lead us, but you were too good for that. So I had to fill the position and I did a lot better than you ever could!”

Oh really?

“That’s right I didn’t get my team blasted through time.”

Yeah, you’re right about that. You’re the one that got himself killed, along with most of your team.

“I’m taking the Blade Hunter and leaving.”

Like I said, you can leave at any time. But I expect you to return my ship once you’re done with it!

Damn! Damn, damn, damn! Why the hell did I say that! No Dawna, I’m alright. I- I just had a fight with Rusty. He’s leaving for a little while. No, I don’t know when he's coming back. Yes, I’m sure he'll come back. No, you don’t need to come up here I’ll be fine. If you insist, meet me in the Park. I don’t feel like staying here at the moment either. Computer, save office hologram and shut down the program.

Entry 221

“Alright, talk. I want to know exactly what happened that has you this upset.”

I’m not-...

“Don’t even start, I can sense everything you’re feeling. You might be able to block your thoughts from me, but your emotions are an open book.”

Rusty wanted to have a meeting with me this morning. I- I thought he was just going to ask to borrow the Blade Hunter so that he could retrieve the ARC Thunderbird. Instead he attacked my morality and my ability to command.

“This is about the rumors that you and Skip have been having sex isn’t it? No, don’t answer that, I already know the answer. Damn it, I told him it was none of his business and to just drop it.”

Don’t you want to know if the rumors are true?

“They’re not. Don’t you think I know you better than that by now? Sure you’ve had a couple of dreams, which I must say I enjoyed watching quite a bit, but you’ve never even entertained the thought while you’ve been awake.”

I- Uh- Wait a minute! I’ve been broadcasting my dreams through the telegems?

“Don’t worry, the only reason that I can see your dreams is because we’re so close. You’re not broadcasting to the rest of the gems only to mine.”

Rusty thinks I should force myself to be perfect because everyone believes I’m some sort of savior.

“I don’t think that. Hell, if you were the perfect anything you’d have gotten yourself killed by now.”

It’s a wonder Rusty didn’t kill me. I told him that he was a clone. I- I was mad and it just slipped out. I know that when he returns he’ll have the Thunderbird and he'll be leaving the team.

“That might not be such a bad thing. If for no other reason then it will double your chances of keeping the dream of peace alive. That is, of course, if we get ourselves killed when we finally confront Crystal.”

But…

“No more talking. I’ve been working too much and I feel like a run. So hurry up and change to your tiger form.”

Entry 222

I know I’ve been neglecting the log but there really hasn’t been anything happening for the last month. Rusty just returned and insisted on seeing me as soon as possible. I’ve checked the ship’s logs and discovered some interesting things. The biggest, at the moment, is that Rusty didn’t bring the Thunderbird back with him. I’m not sure what that means, but I’m going to find out as soon as I’m completely awake. I wonder if Rusty even knows how early it is? True, I planned on getting up early today but four o’clock in the morning is ridiculous.

Entry 223

Let’s see, first I’d better shut down the holo-projector. Hey Rusty, I’m ready for you. So how did your vacation go?

“Oh you know, long stretches of boredom with an occasional moment of excitement.”

Really? Then why is it you needed to see me as soon as possible?

“There are several reasons, but first I want to apologize for the way I acted just before I left. I had no right to say some of the things I said.”

No need to apologize. I said some rather hurtful things as well, so lets just call it even.

“That would be fine, if it wasn’t for the fact that you’ve changed everything in here just because of what I said. I shouldn’t have criticized the way you keep your office.”

Who says I changed anything? I just shut down the holo projectors to make you feel more comfortable. When I’m in here working or when anyone else comes along it’ll be back to normal. Now forget about it. How about telling me about your moments of excitement? After all, I expected you to return with a ship of your own to command.

“Yeah, about that. The Thunderbird is in good hands, and when we need it I’ll call for it. Right now I have other information that I think you’ll find more important. I suggest you turn your holo projectors back on if they make you feel comfortable because you’re not going to like what I have to say.”

[ED] I immediately turned the projector back on and the room went dark. A sliver of moonlight lit one horizon and the other was beginning to lighten on the other. Torches materialized illuminating the area around my desk in flickering firelight. [ED]

“Is the simulation set to galactic standard time?”

Yeah, but don’t worry about it I needed to get up early anyway. I’ve been preparing for a mission of my own. There isn’t much for me to do around here at the moment

“I guess the best place to start is when we left here. We arrived at Gateway and the station refused to let us use the Shendrian gate. So we used the gate that the Snarions had arrived through.”

That was risky. So did you find any sign that Crystal has made it there yet?

“There were no signs of Imperiam forces.”

That’s good to know.

“Yeah, well that might be the only good news. When we arrived on New Accordia we discovered that civilization has regressed to a feudal society. Technology is limited to the upper class and . . . Well, it isn’t a good place to be.”

You’re kidding?

“No, I only wish I were since it gets worse. A portion of the population left New Accordia and settled a new planet they named Neo Accordia. Neo Accordia is a high tech world ruled with an iron fist by a single family. Anyone that breaks the law or displeases the rulers is exiled to New Accordia where, if they don’t find a way to blend in, they're executed for heresy. Also it seems that anyone, found to be a shifter, is considered cursed and exiled.”

Is that it?

“No, when we landed we found ourselves in the territory of Lord Destiny, a depraved individual with no concept of morality or human decency. We were arrested and imprisoned with two children. He had used them in unspeakable ways trying to infect his son with Dacat’s Curse.”

Excuse me?

“That’s how they refer to the ability to shift. I-we escaped and rescued Lord Destiny’s son. Errant wanted to kill Lord Destiny but Leo, his son, convinced her not too. I see that look, and I agree filth like that doesn’t deserve to live. However, if we had killed him, the people of the village would have been the ones that suffered the most. We took the kids to Hollow Base II and gave them enough training so that they could use the Thunderbird. Currently they’re raiding the exile shuttles and helping the exiles learn the truth about how Accordia used to be. The recruits will then infiltrate New Accordia and begin reconstruction.”

What about Neo Accordia?

“That's likely something that I’ll have to deal with personally since the ruling family is the Darkmane Clan.”

I guess it really was an eventful trip.

“I’m not done yet. While on New Accordia we learned that the Dacats had left long before the two societies split. So just to check a hunch we returned by way of Shendria. We were ordered to stand down and be taken into custody. It seems that travel through the gates is now illegal by order of Lord Dacat. Of course, we didn’t pay any attention. After all, I’m the brother of Lord Lightstripe. Who, in my opinion, out ranks any other Shendrian Lord.”

Crap. Well, I guess the first thing we’re going to have to do once we get the Shadow Runner repaired is pay a visit to Shendria. With Crystal so close to invading the Tabor Galaxy we’re going to need unrestricted access to Gateway.

“Yeah, I figured that would be your decision. So is that the mission you were planning for later today?”

No, I was going to check on a base that Kindra might have used to stash her special projects and treasures.

“I’m in.”

Actually I’d planned on going alone.

“Too bad. I’m going with you. While we were gone Errant pointed out a few things, and I think that I need to get to know you. I may have grown up with you but you’re not Tigris anymore, and I have to deal with that fact. Just as you need to get to know me now that I’ve also changed due to the things I’ve done both with the ADL and … other things.”

Alright, but don’t get too excited. This is just an investigation run we’ll be taking the shuttle out to a deserted moon base and then back. It’ll be three days, four tops, so I don’t know if we’ll learn very much about the new us.

“Fine, what time will we be leaving?”

Around noon, as I said earlier I wanted to get an early start, but it seems I’ve got some other things to deal with before we leave.

“Sounds good, I can get in a short nap then.”

Right, I’ll meet you in the hangar bay. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to make some changes to a couple of team member's living arrangements.

Entry 224

I couldn’t get back to sleep, so I just sketched out a new ship design. As well as downloading the exact specifications for a new space racer to replace the one that Dawna crashed. Ah, according to the sensors Dare just got up. I can’t say that I’m surprised that he and Ice are spending time together. After looking over her flight record she might just be able to out fly even me.

Tay, Dare needs to learn how to shut down the telepathic link he has to the rest of us.

“Prowler! You’ve got to speak with Dare! That isn't how I like to be woke up in the morning!”

Hey, I’m not going to disagree with you there. Luckily, with the training she received on Shendria, Ice might just be the best one to teach him how to do that. Of course, just knowing that he's broadcasting might be enough to make him start blocking things.

“Just make sure he knows that I don’t appreciate having lurid images of crew members forcefully projected into my dreams. If you don’t find a way to convince him then I’m going on the offensive and doing the same thing to him. And I think you know whose image I’ll be forcing into his brain.”

Don’t worry, I’ll convince him.

“Good, now I’m going to go and find Errant."

They’re likely still asleep. They got in really early this morning.

“Then I’m going down to the park for a run. If I don’t see you before you take off, have a safe trip.”

I love you too.

“Of course you do. Who wouldn’t love a pirate like me?”

Oh I can think of a few, but hey, that’s their loss. Computer, open a comlink to Dare’s quarters. Dare, would you and Ice please report to my room at your earliest convenience.

“That was subtle.”

Go on and get going before they get here. Otherwise you might feel the urge to attack Dare. After all, I know how dangerous you can be when someone wakes you up for no reason.

“Yeah, and now that I can shift, I’m much more dangerous. Later lover.”

Yup, I’m insane. Everyone was right.

“Darrin and Icebreaker, to see Commander Prowler.”

Huh? They must have come straight up. Come in and have a seat. Ice-

“Yes, Lord Lightstripe?”

If this keeps up, I’m going to have to order people to call me Prowler. Now please, sit down. I’ve heard that you’ve been spending a lot of time with Dare.

“She’s been teaching me to meditate.”

That’s good. So Ice, during your training did you learn how to shield your mind from mental attacks?

“Yes, that's part of the basic training all Shendrian agents receive.”

Thank goodness. Would you please begin teaching Dare how to shield himself from mental attacks. More importantly, how to keep from broadcasting his thoughts?

“Oh, man.”

Now, on to the topic of crew relationships, what you do on your own time is your business. However, I’m changing your quarters so that you're both on the same deck.

“That won’t be necessary!”

Too late, I’ve just posted the changes to the ship's log. Now Ice, if you’ll excuse us I need to speak with Dare about a couple spacecraft projects I want him to work on.

“Hey, this happens to be my day off.”

Yeah, I know, and I don’t expect you to start right away. However, Rusty and I are going on a mission to see if we can find a new source of supplies. So, this is the last chance I have to give these to you before we leave.

“The three racers shouldn’t take much more than a week, since there are plenty of parts on the station. The other ship may take quite a bit longer.”

Yeah, I figured that. Just make sure the racers are ready by the time Rusty and I get back and I’ll be happy.

“So what is this ship supposed to be? It's way overpowered and doesn’t have any weapons.”

It’s a two-man recon and escape vehicle. There's no way it would survive any sort of battle. There are no weapons on it to eliminate the possibility of someone being stupid enough to try and use it as a fighter. I designed them to be small, stealthy, and fast. They'll be used to patrol systems to make sure the Imperiam isn’t sneaking up on us.

“It’s a good design. I’ll get to work on it tomorrow. Today I’m planning on spending some time relaxing in the VR chamber.”

Yeah I noticed you’d booked one of the rooms for the day. I just hope you don’t mind a bit of company, as you won’t be playing alone.

“Oh man, who am I going to have to share with? I don’t want to spend half my time leveling up some rookie.”

Don’t worry; I'm sure you won’t have that problem. Oh and one last thing, just because some of us have more than one form that doesn’t mean we’re not human. Try to keep that in mind from now on. You’ll enjoy your fantasies so much more that way.

Heh, I just hope that wasn’t too subtle for him. I’m sure Ice can handle herself in any virtual game no matter how much practice Dare has. Now, I still have plenty of time before noon. I think I’ll go down to the park for a run as well.

“Prowler, hey Prowler, wake up. Fine, you asked for it.”

“Good morning sleepy heads. It's a beautiful day and we’re all going to sing the Happy Song! This is the happy song and we’re all happy, happy, happy. There is the sun, good morning sun. We’re all happy, happy, happy. Here comes Mr. Bunny, hello Mr. Bun. We’re all-”

ENOUGH! Where the hell did you get that recording! Of all the things I regretted leaving behind on Accordia that song wasn’t one of them. I never want to hear it again! Is that clear? If it isn’t, you can step out the airlock right now.

“So giving a copy to Dawna wouldn’t be a good idea?”

Listen horsemeat, if you ever, and I do mean EVER, mention such a stupid thing again YOU, ARE, DINNER! Is that clear?

“Oh pull in the claws. I’m not afraid, because I know you’re just a kitten at heart. Now if you’re fully awake, I just picked up a distress signal.”

Did you trace it back to source? It could be an Imperiam trap.

“Do you think I’d wake you before I had all the relevant information? I tracked the signal, and the planet isn’t listed in the computer.”

That doesn’t mean much.

“It does when you consider that Dare updated all our navigation computers with a complete record of pre-Imperiam, Imperiam, smuggler, pirates and Arlen’s surveys. Basically we have the most complete navigation information of anyone in this galaxy. But, that planet still isn’t listed.”

Well, now I’m curious.

“That isn’t something I wanted to hear coming from you. You’re running short on your nine lives and I’ve only got … Wait a minute, what am I saying? This is quite literally my second life.”

Careful, you’re beginning to sound like me. Next thing you know people will begin to call you crazy.

“Not if I’m standing next to you they won’t.”

So what did you find out about the planet from the sensors?

“It has a rotation of GS plus thirteen hours. It also has a constant high humidity, so we’d better wear masks if we have to be outside for an extended amount of time. Otherwise we run the risk of slowly drowning as the water builds up in our lungs.”

We’ll also stay in our human forms. I find the smell of wet horsehair revolting.

“Oh, like you’re one to talk. Wet cat isn’t exactly my idea of heaven.”

I’ll be sure to let Errant know that.

“Ouch, you win that one.”

Oh great, I’m really not liking this. If I were furry at the moment it would all be on end.

“We’re almost on the ground according to the sensors. I still can’t see it with all this mist.”

It seems like there are several other ships out there.

“We’re down. The ground seems pretty solid even though it has to be saturated.”

Check all systems! Make sure there's nothing wrong!

“What is it?”

There are multiple ships out there! This is a trap!

“All systems are in the green. I’m powering up the anti-gravity drive.”

I guess I’m just a bit jumpy. Something about this still doesn’t seem right. Suit up; we’re not going to take any chances. I’m sealing the ship and we’ll be using the airlock.

“I hate to say this but you realize we can’t use our blasters?”

Yeah, I know, if there are friendlies out there we can’t risk firing on them.

“Now don’t bite my head off for saying this, but I think you’d better leave your sword here as well.”

What? Why?

“As keyed up as you are there’s a chance you might-”

Charge the blade and fire off a shot. Yeah, you’re probably right.

“Now what are you doing?”

I’ve set the computer to send out a warning that no other ships should risk landing. If we can’t handle this, then I don’t want anyone else getting trapped here. If we get into trouble we can contact the team through our telegems.

“Huh, I hadn’t thought of that. Still, what I meant was why are you leaving your headset behind?”

There isn’t a lot of light out there and the less I have restricting my vision the better. I’ve got a comlink in the helmet so that I can continue my log. So, are you ready?

“As I’ll ever be.”

Good, I’m closing the inner hatch.

"I’m opening the outer hatch. Damn, we had more visibility in the cockpit.”

I see movement. Hello, we intercepted your emergency beacon and we came to- Aaaaaargh! Rusty! Get inside! Hostiles! Energy whip burning through suit...

Entry 226

It's been a while since my last entry. During our last mission Rusty and I were attacked by beings known as the Kriosh. When we revived we had been placed in cages that blocked most of the powers of our telegems. I'm not sure how long we were there because I lost track of time. I'd heard rumors of the Kriosh but I'd never believed them. After all, the stories of a race of primitives that lured in ships, capture the crew, stuff them in cages until they're half dead, when they're too weak to fight back they take them out, and slowly eat them alive couldn't be anything other than fiction. How wrong I was. We only escaped the cages thanks to the sacrifice of another prisoner. After Rusty and I were out of the cages I . . .

There's an illness that some shifters, who have been traumatized, sometimes fall into. It's known as going feral. Basically the rational mind is suppressed allowing the animal side to operate on instinct only. No, that isn't right. An animal wouldn't act the way a feral shifter does. Basically I became a killing machine. It's like the part of you that says "I shouldn't be doing this" doesn't exist. You have only one thought, "kill". As horrifying as that may be, you have to take into consideration that the animal still has access to all the training and skills of the rational being they used to be. In my case I have combat training above and beyond most of the beings in the galaxy, thanks to Kindra, and then add to that the abilities granted by the telegem.

I slaughtered the Kriosh tribe in less than a minute and I loved it. The smell of fresh blood misting in the air was intoxicating. The taste of warm flesh in my mouth was like the sweetest candy. The erotic pleasure of blood matting in my fur . . . God! I can't go on like this!

End Log

Entry 227

I've got to do something. Every time I think of what happened I start to fall back into a feral state again. So far I realize what's happening and my body revolts. My throat is constantly raw from vomiting and I've taken to communicating primarily telepathically. I don't dare sleep for more than a few minutes at a time. The one time I did, I ended up destroying my office before I came to my senses. The only thing keeping me from suffering the insanity of sleep deprivation is my ability to lapse into a deep state of meditation. I can't keep this up.

Entry 228

It's been a month since the Kriosh incident. I'm still surviving but I'm not sure how much longer I have. Rusty, in his annoying way, came by and pointed out that I had a promise to keep. He even suggested if I do this, maybe things would get better. He's more right than he knows. As soon as I've finished my current mission I'm going to take care of the problem permanently. If I don't survive I've recorded a memory crystal for Trace's Sentinel Program to resurrect me. However, I made sure to erase all memories that took place after we were captured. It's hard, knowing that I'm doing a disservice to Ash's memory, but if I do die the guilt will die with me. The new me will at least know she died to save Rusty and why I had to erase those memories.

So, here I am about to land on the planet, Ash called it The Great Egg. She had been traveling for a very long time to reach this place, even before the Kriosh had captured her. Maybe ... I don't know, perhaps this will give me some sort of closure like Rusty suggested. No matter what happens, I'm never going to be rid of this sick feeling. There are so many people I've failed. At least I can do this last thing for her.

End Log

Entry 229

It's done; Ash has joined with her ring of perfect silence. I- I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't this. I remember pulling out the Jahar Blade to cut a tomb in the rocky surface. Now I'm in altered space returning to Hollow Base. The strange thing is the sick feeling has left me. I'd planned on returning to base and then telepathically removing all of my memories of the Kriosh incident. Instead I have no memory of what happened on the Great Egg. I still remember everything that happened on the Krioshan planet. However, I remember everything up until I went feral and at that point my memory of the events change and it is as if I had witnessed it as an observer.

Ugh, that was different. Reaper, the Kah Har god of death and my telegem, just decided to have a little telepathic chat with me. Basically he told me that he has erased my memories of what took place on The Great Egg because there are some things that mortal minds should not know. What took place with Ash's Prophets and her joining their order was a matter of unfinished Kah Har business.

He informed me that Ash did not join The Circle of Perfect Silence. Instead she chose to ascend in another fashion by joining the Kah Har on a higher plane of existence. Like them, a portion of her great spiritual energy has become a new telegem. He is also the one that adjusted my perception of the events of Kriosh incident. Until now I hadn't realized what an active role the Kah Har are still playing in the events of their galaxy. Well, whatever I get hit with next at least I'll be able to focus my full attention on it. Come to think of it, now that I'm not dwelling on my own problems, Rusty hasn't been looking very good lately either. I hope his gem can help him out the way Reaper has for me.

Entry 230

T'yer, Hra'ahl, what are you doing here?

"You called for everyone, which experienced the nightmare, to meet you here. So here I am. Ral is here to find out why I woke up screaming, again."

Sorry, I keep forgetting that your crystal is more like a telegem than a shard.

"So, what is your plan for dealing with this problem?"

Ice, where's Dare? Wait; let me guess…

"The last I saw him he was running out of our room, partially dressed. He was screaming about needing to lock down his racer, add extra security, and something about blue robot blood. I've been attempting to teach him how to shield his mind but it hasn't been easy and the constant nightmares aren't helping. So what exactly is going on?"

Give me a second to reconfigure the room. I want everything to be perfect. We need an open meadow and a bright day. Anyway, Rusty has been having nightmares that have been getting worse since we returned from the Kriosh planet.

"Normally that wouldn't be problem, however because of the link through the telegems we've all been sharing the nightmare."

"Way to understate things, Dawna. Rusty keeps dreaming that he joins a crazy robot cult. He steals my racer, getting robot blood or hydraulic fluid or whatever it was all over my upholstery."

"Dare, get over yourself."

Dawna, Dare, cut it out. We've all been loosing sleep and the last thing we need is a fight.

"Am I the last one to arrive?"

No White Fox, you're just in time since Rusty hasn't gotten here yet. Now, I want everyone to sit in a circle.

"Just like in the dream? That is both sick and twisted. It's the perfect start to getting back at him for having such twisted nightmares."

Dare, shut up. Rusty and Errant are just outside.

"I guess this means that we're the last to arrive?"

By process of elimination we come to the source of our shared nightmare. So Rusty, is there anything you'd like to share with us?"

"Not really, it seems you already know as much as I do."

"You've got that right. If you ever go near my racer you are a dead is that clear?"

"Dare, shut up."

"You could start by telling us how long you have been having these visions."

"I . . . They started when I was in the Kriosh cage. It's nothing more then a manifestation of my fear of being alone."

I don't think so. I think T'yer is more right then he knows. While you were having the dream I wasn't experiencing it from your point of view. I was in, well, that Prowler's mind.

"It wasn't our reality. That Dawna was never a pirate."

"It seems that I didn't join that group of Shadow Runners. I experienced the dream as if I was a spirit watching everything from above."

That's a good point, White Fox. T'yer what was the dream like for you?

"Confusing, I'd move from one mind to another like someone was telling a story in which I was experiencing everything that was being said and thought."

So did anyone besides me notice when the events happened?

"Uh, no I was a bit more concerned about being turned into a robot and the mess in my racer."

Anyone else? No? I'm not surprised, even I had to do some checking but we have three days before the events begin.

"Wait, how can what I experienced be the future? THNDR-23 is dead?"

I know that he's dead in this universe. What I believe happened is that while you were trapped in the Kriosh cage you were trying to reach out for some form of connection. When you couldn't connect with anyone you turned inwards through the telegem connecting with its counterpart in a parallel universe.

"You're kidding right?"

Well, there's only one way to find out. Shadow, run galactic map program.

While I was working as the Bounty Hunter Jahar Træn, I heard a lot of stories about strange places and beings. The Kriosh and the Children of the Holy Mother among them. At the time I figured they were just spacer tales that the long haul pilots would come up with to fill the tedium of space travel. However after recent events I can't deny that some of the stories are in fact true.

"Okay, while I was a pirate, I traveled all over the galaxy and I never ran into any ships like the one from Rusty's dream.”

That's because everyone considers this map to be an accurate representation of the galaxy. Shadow, zoom out by 20 percent.

"Wait, are you telling us that those six wispy arms haven't been explored?

Not entirely Ice, the arms have been explored. However, that was well before the Kah-Har galactic war. It seems in the thousands of years since then the Biotechnicals have colonized a complete arm. Shadow; zoom in on the Tra'est sector highlighting the Vesuvian System and the galactic arm that is connected to it. As best I can tell the Companion Ship was attacked in the Desolate XV system. During my last visit there weren't any habitable planets. However, I did leave a hyper net satellite.

"That means there could be an Imperiam base in the system."

"Dawna's right, if they had one of the newer units as a back up then that system would make a good place to organize a surprise attack on us, since it's so close to this system."

That's one of the things I'm worried about. The other is that the Imperiam will get a hold of the Children's technology. If Crystal was to take mental control of one of them it is possible that she could control all of them through that one unit.

"So when do we leave?"

The sooner we leave the better our chances of intercepting whatever might be out there.

"You're probably not likely to be surprised by this but I still don't want to be turned into a robot."

You're right, I'm not surprised but I don't have a problem with that. I don't much want to be a robot either. However, I'm not going to loose another life if I can help it. So I'll be taking the Blade Hunter. Rusty, I'd like you to join me but the decision is completely up to you.

"If it'll help end these nightmares, I'm in.

Good.

"Not so fast, remember what happened last time you two took off without back up? I'm going with you."

"I'm with you as well. You two really can't be trusted alone anymore."

You hear that Rusty? Our mates are going to be our 'back up'.

"So much for ending our nightmares."

"Before the fighting starts, I know where I can find a few pilots who might be willing to help."

No, I want to keep this just between us. Dare, you can fly escort in your fighter as far as the Desolate XV system."

"I'll act as Dare's wingman."

"A good idea, Ice, but I think it would be better the other way around. I'd like you to take my fighter. I had it built to assault heavy cruisers. If the Imperiam does have large ships we may need the extra punch."

"Lady Lightstripe, I'd be honored to pilot your fighter."

"Yeah Prowler, you're right, the whole title thing can get rather annoying after a while. Now wipe that smirk off your face or I'll rip off your lips."

"You can count on our support. Now that Dare's people have re-equipped the Hope, Ral and I should be able to provide fire support if it is needed."

"I guess that just leaves me. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything I can do."

Not true White Fox, I'm leaving you in command until I return.

"Wait, I-I-I can't be in command. I don't have enough experience. Trace, he'd be perfect for command."

Good, now that you have your second in command everything should flow smoothly. Anything else? No? You have two hours to get ready. Rusty, come with me, we've a memcrystal to create and then edit. I get the feeling that it is going to take more than just our words to convince Tomas and Steven that they should return to their own territory.

Entry 231

Now that we're ready, our first objective is to secure the Desolate XV system and rid it of any Imperiam forces. Dare, your first objective is finding and destroying any hyper net satellites.

"No problem."

T'yer and Ral, you'll be in charge of fighter suppression. Ice, your main objective is to take out any medium sized ships and then providing fighter support to T'yer and Ral. The rest of us aboard Blade will be taking care of any larger ships as well as supporting the rest of you. Now get to your ships.

"So, I figure you'll be piloting?"

No Dawna, I'm going to be operating the hover tank turret in back. You'll be piloting with Erin as co-pilot.

"So what am I going to be doing?"

Rusty, you're in charge of the big gun. Here's your ammo.

"You realize of course that the hyper cannon can only be fired once every sixteen hours?"

I've made a few changes to the design. Now it can be fired once every six hours.

"That isn't going to help us much if we run into a full fleet in that system."

"Oh you can never tell just how long we can hold out."

What your wife is hinting at is the fact she has the rest of the Accordia Defense League members on launch standby if we need support. I should also mention that Dawna has done the same with the team members from Shendria. Finally, Dare basically rallied every other ship and pilot that has passed the space combat tests. I'm sure if it had taken any longer to make that memcrystal of your dream we'd be dragging over half the population of Vesuvia into this battle.

"It is never a good idea to go into battle unprepared!"

[ED] I missed a bit of the report as I walked back to the tank. Basically, MJ scouted the system and found three Imperiam ships. Two heavily armed light cruisers, each twice the size of Blade and a giant slave transport that was being used for communications duty. [ED]

We can use the hyper cannon to take out the harvester and then pick off the two smaller ships.

"No, I need the harvester to signal for support so that I can lock onto any hyper net satellites. Besides, if something bigger does get through before I can shut down the jump link we'll need the cannon to take that down."

"We're in position and all systems are green for jump. I'm sending the scouts sensor data and our projected entry point. Extrapolate firing solution for best effect when we drop out of altered space."

You heard Errant, go to altered space."

Entry 232

It wasn't difficult taking down the Imperiam ships; even with the heavy battleship reinforcement that jumped in on top of us. I've sent everyone except Dawna, Errant, and Rusty back to Hollow Base. Now we just have to sit here with the emergency beacon transmitting on Steven's frequency until they show up.

I've placed Rusty in cold storage, until he's needed, so that we can finally get some rest. I've also taken the first watch just in case Dawna or Errant decides to knock me out as well. Speaking of which, I can hear one of them approaching the bridge.

Hey Dawna, couldn't sleep?

"Are you really that out of it? Your watch is up and I'm here to take over."

Oh, I guess I just lost track of time.

"Replaying the dream over and over I suppose?"

Yeah, something like that.

"You want to talk about it?"

Not really.

"Are you sure?"

You're not going to stop until I do, are you?

"That's right."

So where do you want to begin?

"At the beginning of course."

That's a long way to go back.

"So let's start where our reality and the dream reality split."

That would be on the medical station where we were recovering after we escaped from Kindra. It’s strange how something as small as a cup of coffine can create an entirely new reality.

"Is that where you went?"

In this reality, I just stepped out of the room for ten minutes to get a cup of coffine because I was drifting off.

"And in the dream you were still in the room when I woke up. For a second that me was disoriented but when she saw your face everything was all right."

They left the base together and immediately started fighting against Kindra.

"Kindra retaliated by destroying Accordia."

Tigris built the THNDR-23 robot in honor of his best friend's memory.

"The next time they visited Vesuvia, Arlen told him about his son. Both Trace and Meonii had been on Accordia trying to contact the ADL in order to find him when Kindra attacked."

He named the team the Shadow Runners for the son he never knew. Dare joined the team shortly after that

"The team was contacted by the Federation for Galactic Peace. Tigris and Dare were against the idea but Dawna and Thunder convinced them to join."

After taking command of the Federation ship they tracked Kindra to Arakeen where they destroyed the Malevolent."

"However, Kindra survived and confronted the team over the planet Snarion. She claimed that Crystal Image, the FGP president, had used some form of mind control on her. Dawna and Dare didn't believe a word of it but for some reason Tigris allowed her on board the ship. I still can't understand why he did that. After everything she'd done, I'd have thought he'd have destroyed her same as you did over Accordia."

The main reason was because she showed up alone in an unarmed racer. She told them about how she had tracked a FGP team to the planet Celtis Aranaki shortly after we had destroyed the Malevolent. She destroyed the FGP ship but a team had already landed on the planet. She had a fit when she discovered that the team wasn't the Shadow Runners and she began pounding the controls. The ship traveled back in time where she crashed and was rescued by the Fox Clan. They believed that she was one of the Great Ones. Can you imagine what White Fox would have thought if he could have gotten into their minds like we did?

"I'm glad he couldn't when you consider everything else that happened. Kindra claimed that she had been forced to live on the planet until the FGP arrived. While she was there her mind healed. Prowler made her a member of the team even after everything she had done."

Crystal's teams found the Exp. 39; however, since they believed that Kindra was dead, they demanded that Tigris return the Victory. He refused and turned the ship's weapons on Crystal. Crystal then destroyed the Victory but the team escaped. They tracked down the source of the Exp. 39. Unfortunately, in order to destroy the planetoid, one of the members had to die so that the others could escape.

"Thunder insisted that he should be the one to remain behind since he was only a robot but Kindra stopped him. She was the one who needed to atone for all the evil she had caused. Even as they left Dawna believed that Kindra was trying to trick them."

So did Prowler, we misjudged her.

"No, they did. She sacrificed herself so that the Federation wouldn't have an endless supply of Exp. 39."

No, I meant I misjudged the Kindra in this universe. If we hadn't fired on her she would have been a powerful ally and a lot of the suffering that the Imperiam has been responsible for would never have happened."

"There's no way to know that for sure. Just look at Tigris' memories. After Kindra's death they attacked and killed Crystal. Only she returned with a new body only a few months later. Prowler knew that the only way to fight her would be to find Celtis Aranaki and whatever the source of Kindra's long life had been. When they arrived they found what remained of the Fox Clan."

They found an FGP harvester team killing the old and young and capturing the warriors. They stopped them but most of the clan had been destroyed. They helped them rebuild as best they could. Chief White Fox gave them the telegems just before he succumbed to his wounds. Tigris changed his name to Prowler and started his quest to hunt down and kill every Crystal clone.

"For a thousand years."

Knowing all that they've been through, I wish that Thunder had remained with Steven. He would have had a better life than the rest of them.

"The only positive thing that will come out of this is that we might be able to save the Steven and Tomas of this reality."

No there is something else that I learned while I was in my counterparts mind. I learned that I have another family member here in this reality.

"Who?"

"Arlen Sundowner."

Entry 233

Unidentified ship, this is Commander Træn of the armed escort Blade Hunter. Our systems were damaged when the heavy freighters we were guarding were attacked and destroyed. All of our navigation files were erased, weapons systems are off line, and we have an injured crewmember. Can you assist?

"Commander Træn, I am Steven, and my companionship is named Tomas. We are blessed to have found you in your hour of need. We will assist you in any way that we can."

"This had better be a damned good plan; because I don't know how long I'm going to be able to put up with the religious crap."

"At least they haven't started trying to convert us yet."

"Which reminds me, if I see even one tentacle I'm chopping it off."

That isn't very nice. What happened to the sensitive, compassionate, and sentimental Dawna?

"She only existed in Rusty's dreams. I'm the former marauder, pirate, and freedom fighter. I've also lived as part machine and I don't intend to experience that again."

Don't worry, just play along and I'm sure everything will be fine.

"Oh no, don't tell me, he has a plan."

"Alright I won't."

"We're as good as robots."

I'm sure if we do become robots, it'll be an improvement. After all, it's hard to be so negative when you have found spiritual perfection in the Holy Mother. Ow! Hey no fair ganging up on me!

Steven and Tomas, we thank you for your assistance. I only pray to the Holy Mother that you have arrived in time to save my brother.

"What in the hell are you planning?"

Just trust me.

"Commander Træn, you know of the Holy Mother?"

Of course, we were escorting a religious convoy when the oppressive Imperiam forces savagely attacked us.

"Commander, my companion insists that you are a believer, yet I am not so sure."

Please, call me Jahar. And like the Holy Mother, who at the age of fifteen went to the altar and prayed for knowledge, I am not afraid.

"You know the words of the sacred text? Tomas is correct; you do speak the truth. Is Blade a companion ship?"

No, and we are not, as yet, true believers. We were on a pilgrimage to the sacred altar to meet with the Holy Mother and truly become her children. However, now that out navigation computer has been erased, we are unable to move from this system. If you could transmit the star charts and jump coordinates we could continue on our journey.

Now let's see how long before our little fish bites.

"Your little fish is a robo-shark and I don't appreciate that you're using us as the bait."

Don't worry, Errant, I'm not letting either of them anywhere near us. At least not until we reach the planet of the Holy Mother.

"Where we'll all be turned into good little religious robots."

"Jahar, Tomas and I have agreed to take you to the Holy Mother. Tomas is sending you the information you require. Once you are ready we will escort you to Altar. You said that one of your companions is injured. Tomas wishes to know if we can help him."

My brother, Rusty, is in a coma. I have placed him in suspended animation for now. I only pray that the Holy Mother will be able to revive him.

"We are all children of the mother. If he can be healed then she will know."

May the Holy Mother bless you both for your assistance. I have the coordinates and I'm starting up the real space engines. Everything looks good, Freem engines are powered and in the green, we're jumping to altered space in three, two, one, go.

An hour in altered space and we'll be there.

"Wait, in the dream it took Thunder two weeks to reach the planet."

That's because he had to retrace Tomas and Steven's original course. Tomas sent us complete navigation records of the Children's territory so we are making the trip direct.

"And just what are you planning on doing once we arrive?"

That would ruin the surprise.

"I never liked surprises, especially when Rusty's and my safety are concerned."

"Don't worry Errant, I'll figure out what his plan is before we arrive. That is of course if he actually has a plan."

"What do you mean IF he has a plan?"

Don't worry I have a plan.

Entry 234

"We're here, so are you going to let us in on your plan?"

"Whatever it is, it had better be good, because that entire planet is biotechnical. The moment we land we're likely to be converted since you made us out to be 'true believers'."

Power up the shields and weapons, it's time to reel in our little fishies.

"Commander Træn, Tomas senses that your weapons systems are active. You said that they had been destroyed."

I lied. Contact the Holy Mother and notify her that Prowler, the Homeless One, demands an audience with her and your presence is required. Prowler out.

"You're insane, you know that don't you?"

Well Errant, that's what everyone keeps telling me.

"So are you going to let us in on your plan or not?"

Rusty and I will be meeting with the Holy Mother while the two of you remain in the air in case we need to make a hasty retreat.

"They might try to attack us when we land."

"We're not going to land. Prowler and Rusty will be teleporting off the ship and back on when they've finished meeting with her holiness."

Let me know when the Holy Mother is ready for our meeting. I'm going to be preparing Rusty for transport."

Entry 235

"Holy Mama has granted your request. Are you ready to go?"

Yeah, bring us in close and I'll teleport directly into the Mother's audience chamber.

"Are you sure that's such a good idea? There's no way of knowing whether it's the same in this reality as it was in the dream."

Don't worry; I'm sure we'll be fine.

"Commander Prowler, of the Shadow Runners, I have heard much about you from my children at the edges of the Holy Land. I am surprised that a normal human could live as long as you have. I am further surprised that you have deceived one of my children into bringing you before me. Never the less, I do welcome you to my home."

Holy Mother, I do apologize for the manner of our arrival. I felt that the ruse was necessary in order to teach Steven and Tomas that they shouldn't be so willing to believe everyone they meet.

"Yes, I will be speaking with them about their transgression. However, for the moment I am much more curious as to why you felt you needed to come before me."

My brother is ill, and I believe that the cure for his condition can only be found here.

"Is he willing to become one of my children?"

No, you misunderstand; Rusty has already inadvertently bonded with one of your children.

"That is not possible. If he was bonded then I would be able to feel it through the link I share with all my children."

Even so, the fact remains that he has partially bonded and the only way to cure him is to complete the bonding. I'll explain more once Steven has arrived, and Rusty has completely revived.

"I'm already awake. And let me just say that if you ever drug me again I'll kill you."

Don't worry; the headache will pass in a couple of minutes.

"Steven, please join us."

"Holy Mother, I must apologize for bringing the infidels to your most Holy of worlds. Tomas and I believed-".

"Do not be afraid my child, I am not angry with you. I believe that Prowler would have sought an audience with me even without your help."

That isn't entirely true. If it hadn't been for Steven and Tomas I wouldn't have ventured this far out. Now that everyone is here I have a little holo-movie I'd like to show you.

"At least I don't have to actually live it this time."

What you are seeing is the planet Vesuvia in a parallel reality. I'm sure you will recognize the slumped figure as Steven. The others are members of the Shadow Runners. The holo-recording is from a memcrystal that I edited from Rusty's dreams.

Entry 236

Holy Mother, this recreation wasn't as intense as actually living through the events, as those of us with telegems have. If you like I can upload the events presented here directly into your memories so that you can experience them as we have.

"Trust me you wouldn't like what you'd feel. So Prowler, is this your idea of curing me of my nightmares? If it is I don't think it worked because I can still feel the emptiness that THNDR-23 experienced when he broke the link."

No, but I have a way of fixing that as well.

"Prowler, of the Shadow Runners; as painful as it may be, I believe that it would be best I experience these memories. As with many important life lessons some pain is to be expected. Perhaps this lesson will remind some of my more adventurous children that the galaxy outside the Holy Land is not as forgiving as they imagine. I agree with my counterpart in the alternate reality that the majority of humanity is not ready to join us. However, I can see no way to fill the loss that your brother has experienced unless he joins us.

There is a way, if Steven and Tomas are willing. Do you know of the Kah Har?

"I have met with them before. They were honorable beings before they sacrificed themselves to bring peace to your part of the galaxy."

It is because to the Kah Har that the link between the realities was forged. THNDR-23 and Rusty are both bonded to the Kah Har of life known as Genesis. Just as I am bonded to the Kah Har of Wisdom and Knowledge named Reaper.

"I have met Reaper and he is better known as the Kah Har of Death."

Yes, so I learned once I had bonded with him. However, my bonding isn't the one that is important. The telegems are able to shed a piece of themselves. This piece contains both portions of the Kah Har and its host's soul. The recipient of the piece shares their own soul with the host when they accept the shard."

"I get it! By giving Steven a shard of my telegem the bonding will be complete even though we won't be companions like he is with Tomas. Steven, are you willing to accept a portion of my soul?"

"I- If the Holy Mother incorporates the experiences of your dream then Tomas and I will also feel the loss that my counterpart felt in the other reality. Tomas agrees that if we don't accept your offer we will suffer as you have, since you made the connection. So yes, we are willing to exchange a portion of our souls with you."

"Shard. Ugh, I really do hate that moment of weakness during the transfer."

"I don't feel any different."

That's because you received a portion of Rusty's soul at the same time you gave a portion of yours. It is always easier to receive a shard than to give one.

"That is why we don't hand out shards to everyone we're friends with."

Your Holiness, in addition to Rusty's dream, this crystal also contains information about the current condition of the galaxy beyond your boarders; as well as information on the best way to contact the Shadow Runners should you need us. Now, with your leave, we'll be returning to our ship.

"It took long enough."

Yeah whatever just get us out of here. Oh and Rusty, since you haven't been working lately you get to take us home while I enjoy a nice nap.

"Oh sure, you knock me out and then blame me for not doing anything."

Entry237

So what is the problem now?

"I'm sorry I had to wake you, but we've arrived in the Vesuvia system and Dare is insisting that we go into quarantine. He muttered something about not taking a chance on becoming a 'religious robot zombie'."

Open a channel to the Shadow Runner. Oh, and alert Rusty and Dawna to come up to the bridge.

"I've made several attempts to contact the Runner. All I get is static."

Fine, I'll contact White Fox directly.

"What's going on?"

"Sorry I had to wake you Hun, but Dare is trying to quarantine us."

"HE WHAT! Open a channel to that washed up has been immediately!"

"Dare's in for it now."

This day just keeps getting better. According to White Fox, Dare removed all of the Runner's communications arrays for repair and upgrades.

"Really? Errant, have you contacted Mr. Fireshadow yet?"

Oh shard, she's gone polite. Get your telegems off, cover your ears, open your mouth, and pray!

"What?"

"Good morning everyone, I assume your mission went well."

"DARE YOU IRRITATING, WORTHLESS, ANNOYING, SCUM THAT'S GIONG TO TAKE FOREVER TO WASH OFF MY BOOTS AFTER I'VE STOMPED YOUR MAGGOT INFESTED BODY TROUGH THE RUNNER'S ARMOR DECK PLATING!"

"It seems someone just woke up this morning. Oh, and I should probably mention that I took the precaution of removing my telegem just in case you or Prowler decided to try something."

Dare, when my ears stop ringing and my brain stops throbbing, I'm going to carefully consider whether or not to use the Evolver to bring you back so that I can take over wherever Dawna leaves off.

"Not to interrupt, but if Dawna takes a break every once in a while, I'm more than willing to heal him up so his suffering can be extended."

"Very funny. Fortunately I know that you're making empty threats."

"Are you so sure about that? Remember, Rusty and Prowler suffered imprisonment at the hands of the Kriosh. Do you really think quarantine is going to make them mentally stable enough to stop me from smearing you across the flight deck?"

Errant close the link.

"It's shut down"

"I haven't finished venting yet!"

Too bad, shut down all power. If there's anything onboard with an independent power supply like our weapons and headsets pull the power packs out now. If you have anything in you quarters run down and shut it off.

"What are you up to?"

I contacted T'yer and gave him a message to transmit to Arlen. He is going to come up here and save us from Dare's quarantine.

"What does that have to do with the power?"

Well, Errant . . .

"Arlen is on his way up here to shoot us with an electro magnetic pulse cannon, isn't he?"

"That's insane."

No, just crazy. Now I suggest you get everything shut down and seal yourselves in here on the bridge. I'm heading down to physically shut down and disconnect the generators.

Entry 238

Well, it seems that just about everyone is ticked off with me. Dare is fuming over the fact that I ignored his quarantine and he's moved his racer to a hidden hanger somewhere on Phantom Station 'to keep it from being infected'. I tried to tell him that the EMP would have destroyed any mechanical implants. I also explained that the Children of the Holy Mother didn't convert people to their belief in that fashion. I even sent him my burned out contact lenses and a blood sample, in a thoroughly decontaminated package, for his experts to study. On a related note, I haven't seen Ice since we returned. I'm betting she's keeping a low profile so that she isn't forced to choose between Dare and her oath to the Lightstripe Clan. Not that it would matter; if she had to make a choice I'd order her to choose Dare.

Errant and Rusty are more than a little upset due to my 'rather flippant', as he put it, attitude concerning their health. Telling them not to worry about side affects, since they already have two kids, wasn't the smartest idea. I quickly pointed out that Rusty's telegem would heal any damage to him and he could then easily heal Errant. If they were still concerned an hour in the Evolver unit would put everything right. I guess that's still a touchy subject as I barely teleported away before Rusty could get his hands around my neck.

Of course that left Dawna to smooth the ruffled fur. She did the best she could, but then, her primary diplomatic skill is to yell until everyone shuts up or to pull out a blaster and start shooting. Right now she's spending time in the VR chamber killing cute furry things. I'm going to remain in hiding until she changes her targets so that they no longer look like bouncing tiger heads with tails.

Trace and Tye are both mad as hell since I once again broke my promise by not taking at least one of them along with me. I'll only say this once and then deny that I was the one to say it, but I wasn't willing to risk their lives on the slim chance that Dare's theory could have been possible.

While we were away a trio of pilots, with Dare's help, defected from Gateway Station to report on the situation on Shendria. Currently they're staying in the apartments under the Sundowner and Tye is dealing with them. I'll hear his report on the situation as soon as things cool down a bit.

I've received a request from Spike to put together a diplomatic mission to approach Big Hub Space Station. Supposedly it is still primarily an independent port with only minimal Imperiam influence. I have to admit that I've never been to the station as it was roughly in the middle of the territory that Dawna's pirates claimed. I've forwarded his request to her but as I said earlier she isn't in the mood to deal with anything diplomatic at the moment.

Now, I think that just about brings things up to speed. Well, other than the fact that everyone thinks I'm hiding in my tiger form somewhere out in the park. The truth is I'm actually in my private VR chamber here on the Runner. I figure since so many people are already mad at me I'd go for broke and find out a little about the bounty hunter that tagged along with the furs from the Terran Confederation.

Entry 239

Well, that wasn't the smartest idea I've ever had. As I was checking out the Valhalla Dare nearly caught me. I wasn't able to do much more than grab what I thought was the ship's emergency recorder and teleport back here to my hiding place.

Unfortunately, it wasn't the ship's recorder. Instead it seems to a locked case likely containing the pilot's most valuable possessions. Of course it might still have his personal log inside so it isn't a complete loss, I just have to get it open. Of course that means invading someone’s privacy and destruction of personal property. I guess it's a good thing the owner isn't a member of the Shadow Runners.

Let's see, it is a simple numeric keypad with a ten digit display. So I'll try the most likely combinations first: 0000000000.

Well, that proves that it is only ten digits long. Next up, 1234567890.

"Error. Wrong code entered. Please enter proper code."

Right, time to get technical. Computer, scan case.

"Case contains three memory crystals, four genetic samples, one wooden box, and one silk ribbon."

No explosives? Wow this will be easier than I thought. Computer, run program Prowler 01: Shadow Base. Starting location, robotic design . . . No, starting location: hangar 04 racer repair bay.

"Program initiating."

No explosives, I can't believe the foolishness of some bounty hunters these days.

BANG

Relying on nothing more than a cheap electronic factory lock.

BANG

That anybody with less than half a brain can pop with nothing more than a hammer a chisel.

BANG

Though I suppose, all things considered, Dare or Dawna would have used their blasters or a blowtorch and risked damaging the contents. Interesting, he obviously went to some lengths to keep things orderly. On the left is an ice blue memcrystal and a biological sample in carefully cut grooves. On the right side is a deep orange, nearly brown memcrystal and bio sample that are pressed into the spongey material suggesting that they were just added. It is possible that they belong to the case's owner.

The most interesting thing is that in the center of the case is a carved wooden box. There is no lock, it is held shut by a white bloodstained silk ribbon and inside is a milky white memcrystal with two separate bio samples. One looks like a standard blood sample and the other . . . well I suppose there is a story behind that one.

If I were to believe most of the reports from the liberated slaves the only reason for a human to be carrying a memcrystal and bio samples in Confed space is because these are his favorite slaves and he would be getting them recreated eventually. However, that explanation seems wrong in this case due to the fact he was keeping these close in case he had to evacuate his ship, and because he had to know that there might not be an evolver in this galaxy. Unless, like the slaves, he was hoping to find the prototype evolver. In that case these might be human memcrystals.

Computer, cancel program Prowler 01 and initiate a new blank template.

"Program canceled. New template initiated, Prowler 93."

Form a loading room and include a memcrystal reader. Good, now let’s see what our stowaway bounty hunter thought was so important. Download memcrystal and create a virtual clone avatar from the information. Create location from downloaded information of where the subject would believe he should wake up.

Cancel last request, substitute location Prowler's living room from Prowler 01 program. Place subject lying on the couch. A white rabbit, so it is definitely a slave and rather young at that. Still he may be able to tell me a bit about his owner.

Computer, run program and wake the subject, now.

I know you're awake, how are you feeling?

"I'm fine, sir."

What do you remember?

"Getting a memory crystal scan, sir."

As you've likely noticed this is not a regeneration facility. Where do you think you are?

"It doesn't matter where I am. You are my new master and that is all that matters, sir."

How does that make you feel?

"I'm fine, sir."

Don't lie to me! Your ears are drooping and your eyes are starting to water. It is easy to see that you are not "fine". Now, I asked you a question and I expect a full and truthful answer. How do you feel?

"I'm hurt and angry that my former owner sold me, sir."

Your former owner didn't sell you. I found your crystal among the effects of a dead bounty hunter.

"It doesn't matter. The only way my former master would have parted with my memory crystal is if he was dead. So, you can kill me now or I'll kill myself as soon as I get a chance because I'm nobody's slave."

Computer, reset program and wake the subject. I know you're awake. How are you feeling?

"I'm fine, sir."

I'm sure you're feeling a bit disconcerted about your current surroundings. I know it isn't how you would normally wake up after being regenerated. So, tell me a little about yourself and your master.

"I-I don't know what to say, sir. I'm sure Master Aaronson told you everything you need to know. I'm just a slave, sir."

Yes, well that is a problem. You see, your master was in an accident-

"What! Is Gabriel alright? I must see him immediately!"

So much for my interrogation skills. Please sit down. We're going to have a little talk. First off, you haven't been regenerated in an evolver unit. You are a holographically generated representation of . . . What is your name?

"Mykale, sir."

Mykale it is then, and stop calling me "sir", I'm no more important than you are. I've had you generated so that you can tell me about the bounty hunter that showed up on my base and why he had your memcrystal so well protected. Computer, create image of the bounty hunter discovered on the Victory.

"That- that's my owner, Gabriel. He's older than I remember. What happened to him?"

What didn't happen to him? He is currently stable and I've placed him in hyper sleep until I decide what to do with him. When we found him he was unconscious, with a gash on his head, broken ribs, and a concussion. Everything else, including his missing eye, the self-inflicted scars and tranquilizer addiction happened before his crash. Now it's your turn to let me know a bit about him.

"Gabriel is my master. I was given to him as a playmate and pet, since his father is a ranking official in the Confederation. I can't tell you anything else."

You two grew up together and you can't tell me anything else? I really don't believe that. However, considering the stories I've heard about the Confederation I can only assume that is influencing your answers. Just from you reaction to thinking Gabriel was dead and the condition of the case holding your memcrystal, I'm betting the two of you are more than just master and slave. In fact, from the look on your muzzle I think you're even more than just friends.

"No, sir, that isn't the case at all. It is true that he treats me like his best friend, and yes, maybe I do have feelings for him that are above my place but he has never broken any of the master and slave laws, sir."

So, if I were to destroy your memcrystal and the revive him do you think the outcome would be anything other than his suicide?

"I-"

That's what I thought. Now, I'm going to ask you some questions and I want honest answers. Before we begin I want you to know that you are no longer in Confederation controlled space, this is the Kah Har galaxy, so their laws do not apply. I suppose, if you are like most of the other refugees, you'd think of this galaxy as the fabled location of the evolver prototype. Which, by the way is the one I own and will use should I decide to regenerate you. My name is Prowler, and even though I'm the commander of this ship I'm not really anybody of any importance. So, let's talk about Gabriel.

Entry 240

Well, I've finished my interview with Mykale. He was more than happy to talk about growing up with Gabriel. Unfortunately that really doesn't tell me much about the man he's become. I can also tell there's something he's not telling me. I'm almost tempted to scan through his memories to discover what it is, but that would start me down a path I'm not willing to take. So I saved our meeting to his crystal and returned it to its case.

Next up I'm going to see what or who is recorded to the blue crystal. I didn't tell Mykale about the other two crystals since he was so sure that no matter what had happened to Gabriel they would never give up on each other. It's a sweet thought but a lot can happen especially after your soul mate dies, or loses her mind.

Computer, run program using the new memcrystal information. Great, thing just got messy. The new subject, an elk this time, is really young. I'd guess him to be eleven or twelve years old. Computer, wake the subject.

"Where am I? Where's Master Tarrin or Lord and Lady Wilson?"

Please, don't upset yourself. Everything is going to be alright. Do you have a name?

"Lord Wilson calls me slave or pet. Lady Wilson calls me Jonathan. Master Tarrin called me Jon."

Alright then Jonathan, my name is Prowler. Not lord, or master, just Prowler. Now, do you remember if anything important was happening just before you came in to have your memory crystal updated?

"No, I just had to come in for a check-up and update."

Just one last question. Have you ever heard of a human named Gabriel Aaronson?

"Oh yes, Lord Wilson often reminds Master Tarrin not to trust strangers or to let anybody in the house otherwise the whole family could be killed and he might get taken just like Lord Governor Aaronson's son, Gabriel. He made sure that Master Tarrin was well trained in self-defense and has even started the process of getting the proper documentation so that I can be trained as Master Tarrin's guard."

Thank you, Jonathan. Now, why don't you take a nap? I'm sure you're feeling tired. Computer, save interview to Jonathan's memcrystal and end this interview session.

So, as far as Confed was concerned Gabriel's family was killed and he was kidnapped. However, according to Mykale, Gabriel's only real family was himself and Marrian, the household’s maid, since his mother was dead and Governor Aaronson only acknowledged Gabriel’s existence when it was good for fund raising and to further his own political career.

Another item of note is the fact that, according to Gabriel's medical report, he'd carved or burned six names into his skin. The oldest two were Mykale and Marrian. Jonathan's name was also there. I'm getting a sick feeling about Gabriel. I'm betting that all the self-inflicted cuts are for each of the people he's killed. As for the six names I'm betting that they were all slaves that he either killed or at least who’s death he considers himself responsible for. The latest name he carved is Christopher. I'm betting that the last crystal contains a fur whose name is Christopher.

Computer, save current program as memcrystal interviews.

"Program Prowler 93: Memcrystal Interviews, saved."

Run program, Prowler 62: Sanctuary Meditation Garden. I think I'm going to clear my mind before I go any further.

Log 241

I'm still not sure if I'm ready for this. Computer, run program 93 and use the information from the orange memcrystal.

"Where am I? Who are you?"

You're safe, this facility is outside of Confederation space and is dedicated to the freedom of all races. My name is Prowler Lightstripe. I'm the one in charge here.

"How do I know this isn't a trap?"

You were just regenerated from a memory crystal, what would be the purpose in doing that if this was a trap? If anything I should be worried that you are a risk to the refugees that have found sanctuary here.

"Why should I believe you? You're human after all."

Human? Look me in the eye and tell me that.

"So you're not entirely human. That doesn't prove this isn't some sort of trick. How did you get my personality crystal anyway?"

Well, I haven't asked you any questions and I've answered the questions you've been asking. However, no matter what I say you are going to believe what you want and I'm not going to try and change your mind. As for hoe your crystal came into my possession; it was recovered from a bounty hunter's ship.

"I suppose the original me must be dead then. So much for the possibility of a fur ever being truly free."

Heh, you're not going to believe this but I know many furs that were born, raised, and a few that have died free.

"You're right, I don't believe you. The fact that I was born was a freak accident. The genetic anomalies all slave have programmed into them matched up in my parents in such a way that they canceled each other."

If it can happen once then it likely happens more often than you realize.

"Maybe; but, considering everything that went just right for me, I still ended up dead at the hands of some bounty hunter."

If it helps any, he seems to be a furry sympathizer that stowed away aboard Confederation Final Voyage vessel. As best as I can tell he was searching for the mythical Sundowner Galaxy. Of the three crystals that included genetic samples one was yours, the second was of a young Elk, and the third was a rabbit. The Elk has no idea what had happened to him or why his crystal was in the bounty hunter's possession. You seem to think that you are one of his bounties, which I suppose is possible, but the rabbit was his lover and likely the reason he is looking for the Sundowner Galaxy.

"I suppose that is a reasonable assumption."

Now, it's time for that interrogation I mentioned earlier. What is your name?

"Christopher Hope. Wait, if you're not part of the Confederation how did you regenerate me?"

I haven't actually regenerated you yet. This is a simulation with your personality generated directly from your mem-crystal. Sorry about the deception but I had to be sure you weren't a threat and I was looking for information about the bounty hunter in my infirmary. Also, for future reference it's Kah Har not Sundowner galaxy. We'll talk some more after I'm able to get you regenerated. For now the equipment is working overtime just repairing the genetic problems of a ship full of furry refugees.

"Wait!"

Computer, end program and save interview to Christopher's memory crystal.

"Commander, your confederation bounty hunter is waking up. Get down here and deal with him."

Thanks Jen, I'm on my way. Mahan, open a comlink to the Valhalla.

"The link is open."

Mykale, Jen just informed me that Gabriel is waking up.

"I'm on my way!"

Take your time. I'm going to debrief him first. When you do get over here you should wait out in the hall. We wouldn't want him going into shock thinking that he was dead.

"Alright, but don't make me wait too long."

I'll try not to, close link. Hmm, I'm here and from the look of things he still isn't awake yet. I think I'll just wait out here until Jen returns to her office.

"Good, you're awake. Now you're not my problem anymore. Worthless Confederation scum."

You're looking better, but then, half dead is a big step above mostly dead.

"I've been..."

[ED] The look on Gabriel's face was priceless when he realized that he was paralyzed from the neck down. [ED]

Yeah, you got a bit busted up. Now, we need to have a little talk. We'll start off easy, my name is Prowler, what's yours?

"Gabriel Aaronson, is this the Sundowner Galaxy?"

No, this is the Kah Har Galaxy. Why are you here?

"I'm here on business. Have you ever heard of an evolver unit?"

You know, many of the people I've talked to from your galaxy have asked that question. Now, how about telling me why you came to this galaxy. This time you might want to take into consideration the fact that I worked for a few years as a bounty hunter. So, I already know that is your profession as well.

"My current job has more to do with smuggling than bounty hunting. There is, or was a human in a stasis pod aboard my ship. He was my information broker. After getting his hands on the location of the wormhole to this galaxy he knew that Confed was going to silence him. So, he hired me to get him here. Things didn't exactly go as he had planned and we had to place him in stasis until we were well away from any wormholes"

Well then, if I go ahead and wake him up he'll verify your story?

"Then the Valhalla is still in working order. Just how damaged is she?"

The hull is pretty banged up and you'll need to have your faster than light drives completely replaced in order to get around this galaxy. Still, the worst damage was to you and your robot. I'm sorry to say that without a complete set of schematics I'm not going to be able to get him operational again.

"You'll have to talk to Montana about that, when you wake him. Comma, is his bot. Wait, what good will it do me to get a new drive if I'm paralyzed? Just how injured am I?"

Sorry, but you still owe me two answers. First off, you never told me if 'Montana' would verify your story.

"Yes, I'm fairly certain he will."

Good, now about this evolver thing. I already know why the former slaves want to find it but what are your reasons?

"Montana is looking for the fabled prototype unit because, according to legend, it can be used on humans. He wants to use it to heal his wife and daughter."

Your paralysis was drug induced so you're going to be fine. Now why don't you tell me why you're looking for the evolver?

"I... I..."

"He needed the evolver to keep a promise to his mate."

"Mykale!"

"Kitten, you look like hell. And that's even after Prowler used the evolver to repair all the damage you've done to yourself over the last five years."

Mykale, ask Jen for a hover chair and move Gabriel to your quarters where you two can catch up in private. It seems there's some left overs in Gabriel's freezer that I have to deal with. Three more Confed humans, Jen is going to have a fit.

"If it helps any, Montana told me that his wife's job was researching cures for furry diseases. Oh, and they're both furry sympathizers."

Thanks, that may indeed be helpful. Mykale, before I forget, remember that Gabriel's body is still recovering so no strenuous activities for a few days.

Gabriel's mouth hung open in shock. "How did he..."

Mykale laughed, "Let's see, what would be the best way to put this, he has telepathic abilities."

"He what!"

"You've been in a coma for two weeks so Lord Prowler has been keeping a mental eye on you. Don't worry; he's very careful about staying out of other people's minds. That's why he asked you all those questions." Mykale said as he retrieved the hover chair.

“But if he's been in my mind then..."

Mykale snorted, "Listen kitten, he didn't have to go into your mind to know you're a lynx. Almost immediately after you came out of your session in the evolver you started speed shifting between forms. That's why they gave you the paralytic drug."

"So he knows and he doesn't think I'm some sort of freak?"

Mykale laughed and nearly dropped Gabriel as he moved him to the chair. "Kitten, this ship is literally crawling with shifters and Lord Prowler is the top dog." Mykale quickly glanced at the infirmary's door. "Uh, make that top tiger, in both the Kah Har and Tabor galaxies."

"So if Lord Prowler is so important why is it he's taking such an interest in me?"

"First of all, don't ever let him catch you referring to him as anything but Prowler. He hates titles that make him seem more important that anyone else around here. Also your nightmares were," Mykale paused as they waited for the lift, "really intense."

"Yeah, try living them. Fortunately your memory crystal didn't contain the memories of your death."

Mykale bit his lip until the doors of the lift opened. He quickly pushed the chair down the hall and into their quarters. Once inside he moved Gabriel to the couch and then curled up with his head on Gabriel's lap and started to cry.

Gabriel just sat for a minute thankful that he'd gained enough movement to be able to gently rub between Mykale's ears. "All right, spill it."

Mykale whimpered, "Please don't blame Prowler, he didn't want to, but I was very convincing and in the end I had to enlist the aid of his mate."

"What did you do?" Gabriel asked, praying his suspicions were wrong.

"I... I got him to take me into your nightmares. I was there for all of it, my death, Lucas, Jonathan, Petra, Christopher, and even for you constantly punishing yourself. Please, please promise me you won't do that anymore."

Gabriel sighed. He tried to respond but for some reason both his throat and mind seemed to rebel and he couldn't speak.

"This galaxy isn't perfect. Even though the wormhole back to Confederation space has been closed Prowler is starting a war with the Imperium. A government, here in this galaxy, that has a lot in common with Confed. I'd like to be part of the fight but if it means you'll continue hurting yourself Prowler has promised to find us a quiet planet to settle on."

Gabriel pulled Mykale completely into his lap and kissed him, "Bunny, whatever you decide I'll follow you. We're finally together and that is all that I've ever needed."

Entry 243

Gabriel, Mykale, and Jonathan waved goodbye a final time as Monte's shuttle drifted out of the hanger. The family had secured positions aboard the Fyretech Corporation Starship Phoenix. Montana was in charge of designing and marketing a line of Shadow Runner toys. As he put it: "nothing is more subversive than a well-designed and properly marketed toy line. After all, kids always want toys." His wife on the other hand would be continuing her research on diseases among non-human species, as well as keeping an eye out for undiscovered shifters.

Christopher, having no real connection to Gabriel, had already transferred over to the newly re-christened Furry Victory to be with the other Confed refugees. He intended to hone his already impressive survival skills and work as an infiltration specialist.

As the shuttle disappeared around the side of the ship the small group turned and headed toward the lifts. Mykale had joined the Shadow Runners and true to his word Gabriel followed him. They made arrangements to adopt Jonathan. I was hesitant at first, due to the fact that Mykale was underage and Gabriel wasn't that much older. It had been Jonathan, along with Jen's help who had finally convinced me age wasn't as important as the fact that the couple truly wanted the best for Jonathan.

I promised I’d find them positions on the crew that didn't directly involve violence. He seemed to consider the offer but too much had happened to all of them to think that a safe job would fix everything. Instead, as soon as they upgraded the Valhalla Gabriel planned to go back to work only this time he'd be using his skills to track down and help people being persecuted by the Imperium. His past still continue to haunt him; however, with his family, maybe he could at last begin to heal the scars.
