Occupational Hazard

-Chapter 2-

The car ride to the scientific facility continued without interference, mainly because the 'Human' she found spent the entire time sleeping. She found it odd although she has no military experience she knew soldiers were supposed to be well...alert or focused. He seemed to be lacking in those traits, at the moment.

She also noticed something else, it wasn't necessarily the way he acted but more so the way he looked. Instead of his beige skin color, he looked whiter than she last remembered. Either way they was getting close to their destination, and she wanted to make a few phone calls before she walked in with an alien in tow.

She pressed her center tablet a few times and pulled up her friend and coworker, she could trust her with not spreading this new discovery to the whole faculty. They needed to take this slowly and plan carefully. Besides she completely winged it bringing him to the faculty in the first place, he was armed and they know nothing about his capabilities.

“Velas, hey you still at the lab?"

“Yea I was just finishing up something before I head out."

“Mind staying for a few more minutes, I found something big, and i'll be there soon."

“I thought you were taking the day off, relaxing at the hot springs."

“Thats where I found him."

“...Found him…what did you find?"

“It will be easier if I showed you…"

“Ok...should I inform the staff?"

“No, actually Inform the security team."

“Kelanis...what are we dealing with here."

“Lets keep it simple and say, I had contact with an alien life form."

“...That is far from simple…"

“Just do it."

“Ok, ok"

-~-

“That went...well" Kelanis let out a sigh, she glanced back over to the sleeping human. “Don't you think?"

No response.

She reached over and nudged his shoulder only for his body to slump against the passenger door. “Uh oh." She looked down his leg at the wound and saw that most of the fabric was almost entirely covered in blood.

“That's not good." It didn't take a doctor to tell he has lost a good amount of blood. She put that thought aside as she pulled up to the lab and immediately recognized 5 people from her security team, all armed with non-lethal stun guns. She could only hope he stayed asleep so they didn't have to use them.

Kelanis parked nearby, but as she exited she was met with one of the guards. He extended his hand to her which she took it after a moment of hesitation, but stopped when he moved her away from the car.

“Where are you taking me?" She asked, but to no response. “He needs medical attention!"

“We need to get you somewhere safe while we deal with 'him'." He led her inside where she joined Velas in looking through the glass entrance.

They both watched as 3 of the guards approached the car, while the other 2 covered their advance. She held her breath seeing one of them slowly reach for the door handle. Her eyes flew wide open, as the guard opened the door the human's body simply fell out. He was now sprawled out on the ground, although they kept their weapons raised they lowered them a second later. Once they confirmed he was unconscious and waved for the two to join them.

“Dr. Velas, he is safe for you to proceed." The head guard responded. “He seems to be unconscious possibly due to blood loss."

“Yes, I would agree with you there." Velas kneeled down to look closer. “Please inform a nurse to bring out a stretcher and get room 5 prepped for a patient."

The guard nodded in response and hurried into the building, shortly after a nurse rushed out pushing along a stretcher. Her panicked expression quickly turned into utter shock when she saw the patient, maw agape.

“Snap out of it." Velas closed the shocked nurses maw and helped her regain her focus. “Treat him like a normal everyday patient, you 4 help put im onto the stretcher."

It took the combined strength of all four guards plus Velas, Kelanis and the nurse to get him onto the stretcher. Eventually the managed to lay him down and they fastened the harnesses, with that done they began to make their way back to the building's entrance.

The sound of a APC's diesel engine was the only sound in the quiet neighborhood. Their patrol began in the early hours when activity was lowest. There was hardly anyone on the streets, it was quiet almost peaceful, they could get caught up in the silence if they weren't so afraid of being shot in the throat or thigh by a sniper. Snipers usually went for these areas because they were unprotected, the throat for obvious reasons and the thigh for your femoral artery.

Their mission that day was to cordon of an area to perform 'knock & searches', which consists of knocking on doors of homes and asking to search for militia related materials, weapons or bomb making materials. They were reaching the edge of the marked zone, once there they could began searching.

Over their radio the could hear that other squads were in similar positions, so they waited for further instructions. Not less than a minute later the radio came alive.

“Squad 1-5, you are clear to proceed, be advised this is hostile environment."

“Roger command, Squad 1 dispatching. Over."

They began searching the houses almost immediately, although most were empty, every now and then they came across a resident who was not to happy about being woken up at 4:00 A.M, then having their house searched. Either way they didn't have much of a choice.

The sun was just beginning to rise when they stopped to check their progress, and by the looks of it they were just about done. Only one more street then meet up at the extraction zone. If they were lucky they would be back in time for lunch.

They were entering one of the last buildings when they spotted something of worry. Inside there was multiple bodies, normally this wasn't a big problem but these looked fresh, really fresh. The bodies looked to be civilians, although there was no official way to distinguish between them and the Talibans.

They started searching the bodies for possible survivors, John noticed something in particular. On the far side of the room there was a man who was hunched over against a wall. As John rolled him over to get a look at his face, but was surprised to find a small child in his lap. He was even more surprised to find that the child was still alive.

“Medic!" John grabbed the medics attention. “I got one alive over here, a child!"

“Set him down on the table over here." He led John into the kitchen of the house where he set the child down on what looked like the dining table. The medic then started to give the child a quick one over for any injuries. “I don't see any ballistic wounds, although the bruising on the abdomen might be broken ribs."

John looked to where the medic was pointing and too noticed the bruises, he looked back up to the medic but something behind him caught his eye. Behind the medic was a window, that somehow they both failed to notice. But it wasn't the window that caught his attention, a few buildings down a figure in all black stood with a sniper rifle, pointed at them.

There was no time to react, less that a second later his vision went red. Not from his blood but from the blood of the medic. Before the sniper could get another round off John grabbed the kid and held him to his chest. He ran to where the rest of his squad were to find them fighting a group of Talibans that were trying to gain access to the building.

“Johnson's down, sniper northwest about 50 yards out." John set the kid down and went to retrieve the medic. “Watch him, i'm going to get Johnson out of there."

Most of the soldiers were too busy to respond but John did get a few nods. With that he ran back to the kitchen to find the medic. It didn't take him long, as he entered the room John spotted him against a wall with his hand against his throat. John knew he wouldn't make it.

“Johnson…" He knelt down infront of the medic. “...come on man i'm gonna get you out of here."

“No…" He stopped John from lifting him. “We've seen this...a hundred times...those bastards shoot for the throat for a reason."

“Dont worry ill get you to a hospital." John tried to lift him again but was stopped.

“Clarke...listen…" He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small folded paper. “...you gotta promise me something."

“What's that." John had a hand on his friend's shoulder to try and comfort him, but inside he was almost to tears.

“When you get out of this...shit hole…" He held out a trembling hand which John took in his own. “Give this to my wife."

“Ok, I will" John went to put it in one of his vest pockets but the medic grabbed his arm again.

“Promise...me."

“I-I promise."

Johnson then rested his head back on the wall but kept his eyes looking directly into John's until he took his last breath. His gaze will forever haunt John.

“Clarke get your ass over here...Shit." Alex Wright, their sergeant, noticed Johnson and had a sad look on his face, but he quickly regained his composure. “Grab him now, we gotta go."

Training took over and John quickly put the medic into a fireman's carry and followed Wright out. They entered the room where John initially left the young kid and saw that another soldier had taken the initiative and was holding him to his chest.

“Alright Squad 1, move out." Wright ordered. “We got a EVAC called, its 1 mile south of this position."

There were a few “Yes, sir" responses but most simply nodded. They began exiting the building one-by-one. John had one foot out when the soldier in front of him, who was carrying the kid, turned and spoke the 3 letters they all dreaded.

“RPG!"

John tried to reach out and save him and the boy, but with the tight spaces he was confined to and the added weight of Johnson on his back their was nothing he could do but watch as the RPG slammed not 5 feet behind the soldier. Engulfing him and the child in flames.

John woke breathing heavily and with a cold sweat covering his entire body. These situations were becoming all to frequent, before it was a once a month thing. But now it was almost every night. He rubbed his face clear of sweat and noticed his gloves were removed. He was also missing his helmet, backpack and vest. He had a second of panic until he realized he was in a hospital room.

He felt where he remembered being shot and surprisingly only felt skin, although it was numb. He tested it by standing which worked normally. “Hmm, no pain, a little sore though...odd"

“Ok so I wasn't captured by the Taliban…" John looked at his surroundings, he wasn't expecting to see hi-tech monitors and such spaced out in the room. “But this looks to good to be a field hospital."

He kept looking around until his gaze stopped upon a poster. It was the type that showed the muscle structure of the human body. But this wasn't the human body, this resembles the creature John faintly remembers.

“I thought that was a dream" John quickly looked for his M4 but it was nowhere to be found. He then reached down and surprisingly found that they didn't take his Beretta away. “No way they left me with this."

He ran up to what he thought was a door but there was no handle, he spotted a small screen on the wall. As he approached there were two icons spelling 'Open' and 'Close'. He pressed open but the next thing that showed up was a grid of numbers.

“Shit…I'm gonna have to break my way out."

He tested the door with a firm shove, nothing, he tried kicking it, still nothing. John holstered his pistol and backed away from the door getting ready to charge. In a last ditch attempt he started running at the door, but right before he was about to make contact it swung open revealing a wall of fur instead. That stood very little chance of stopping him as effectively as the door would.

“Oooffff" John quickly recovered and stood after removing a few hairs out of his mouth. “Stay where you are!"

He pointed his pistol at another wolf creature, this one being white and grey. It raised trembling hands so John lowered his weapon. Hoping things would escalate any further.

“Alright, who are you…" John quickly surveyed his surroundings. “And where the hell am I."

In a different part of that same facility Kelanis was talking with a few of her colleagues. One of which was head of security.

“You want us to keep that thing?!?"

“I want to keep him so we can study his kind." Kelanis was starting to become annoyed how he could only see the negative in things. “Imagine how much we can learn from him."

“Imagine how dangerous he can be, you saw the weapon he had."

“Weapon. You mean weapons…" All she received was a blank expression from the guard. “How many did you find on him."

“He only had one in his possession-"

At that moment another guard entered, one that was in charge of surveillance. He wore a grim look on his face.

“Sir, we have a situation." He looked to be out of breath. Probably sprinted the whole way. “The patient has escaped, he has Velas."
