A squadron of 3 U.S Marines move towards an Insurgent compound, intel says they have developed high-tech, possibly nuclear, weaponry. They have the responsibility to locate and destroy whatever they find, but first they have to find out what it is.
Occupational Hazard
-Chapter 1-
“Sir I've got 2 by the front gate, and one making clockwise passes every 2 minutes." John informed Zach on his observation.
“Good observation, Clarke. That should give us plenty of time to cut through the gate then identify a possible entry point to the main building." Zach said.
“And that's where the fun begins!" Glenn said as he rubbed his hands together.
“Not until Clarke gets what he needs, we need to figure out what this thing is before we go blowing it up." Zach said with a groan, rubbing his helmeted forehead. “For all we know this could be a bio-weapon, and blowing it up could just cause more problems."
“I wanna at least blow something up…" Glenn moped turning away from them.
Zack just sighed and turned back towards their objective. They had to wait for the patrolling guard to pass by, giving them a 2 minute window to infiltrate the fence then find a way to enter the building. Then Clarke would grab a few pictures of the weapon and they would be out, then you could say goodbye to that bases geography.
“Sir, I have visual with the guard." John said, looking through his goggles. “That gives us a 2 minute window, starting...now."
“You heard the man, Noland get your chain cutters out." Zach ordered as they crouch-walked towards the perimeter. “Move forward, Go Go Go!"
Once they made it to the fence Glenn quickly started cutting through the chainlink like it was butter. And in a quick amount of time they had a hole big enough for them to squeeze through. And one by one they entered the compound, they took cover at a nearby shed.
“Clarke, you see any entry points?" Zach asked. “Remember we have to do this quietly."
It took John a few seconds before he pointed towards the center building, it looked like a large ware house. Besides being made out of something a lot different compared to what he would see back home. “There's a door there and if it's locked I can pick it open."
“Good, we should have about a minute before the guard rounds again." Zach turned towards John and pointed towards the door. “Take lead and check the door right away, well cover."
“Alright, 3 2 1 go." John moved towards the door quietly while the other two checked his sides for hostiles. They made it to the door without conflict and John reached towards the doorknob, turned it and pulled. It opened. “Figures…" For some reason the people here never locked their doors, even at guarded compounds like this one.
“Its open." John said, hand still firmly on the knob. “Noland, ready?"
“Born ready." Glenn mocked, gun raised towards the door ready for anything that may be on the other side.
They counted down quietly together, on 3 John opened the door and Glenn rushed in followed closely by Zach. John waited a couple seconds covering their 6 then moved inside as well, after they gave him the “Clear" he was waiting for, closing the door behind him.
John went to turn around expecting a dark building they would have to navigate through till they found the room where the weapon was held. Instead, it looked as though the whole building held the weapon. John almost gasped in surprise if Zach's hand wasn't over his mouth.
“Ok, Clarke." Zach removed his hand once he was sure John wasn't going to gasp in shock. “Got any ideas on what the hell that is?"
“I have no clue sir." John said, after the initial shock he could finally break down what he was looking at. Sphere at the bottom, with a large cylinder protruding from the top. The cylinder also had an omous blue glow being spread across the room. “My guess, some sort of energy weapon or reactor. But I could be wrong."
“Well we don't have anything else to go off of." Zach wanted to get things moving, he looked around cautiously. “I don't like this, why would they leave something like this guarded so little."
“I don't know sir." John added as he pulled out a camera from his vest. “Ill grab a few pictures and we'll be out."
“And then we can blow this place to hell." They looked back to Glenn, seeing him rummaging through his backpack.
“As long as it's safe to do…" Zach looked back towards John. “Clarke?"
“Umm, yea. Worst comes to worst it may mess with vehicle instruments." John grabbed one last photo, he too had a bad feeling about all of this. “Thats until the excess energy dissipates...ok I think that's enough photos"
“Alright, Noland get this thing rigged up." Zach's uneasiness continued building. “John make sure our exit is clear.
John nodded in response, making sure no one snuck up on them from behind. But once he got to the door he reached out to open it and check outside for any hostiles.
It was locked
John looked for an switch of some sort to unlock it but he couldn't find any. “Sir the doors locked!"
“It was a trap…" All of Zach's suspicions were answered. “Swap positions, i'll see what I can do."
John made his way over to give Glenn cover as he set up explosives, when he heard Zach curse loudly. He turned his way to see what was wrong.
“I hear shouting outside." Zach aimed his gun towards the door. “We breach once Noland is done, looks like we'll have to fight our way out."
“Almost done here sir." Glenn added sticking one last package onto a support beam of the structure. “I've got some on the machine itself and a couple to make the building collapse so they won't be able to retrieve it."
“Good, John watch our 6." Zach and Glenn took positions around the locked door. “Noland, ready?"
Glenn nodded in response. Zach released the first two shots fired the entire mission. Them being a muffled 'Crack!' instead of the loud bang. It was enough still to alert the two insurgents outside, who began shooting wildly in their direction. Their AK-47s breaking the relative silence.
Glenn and Zach would occasionally peek out to take one or two accurate shots but the amount the insurgents were putting out was suppressing the efforts of the two men.
That was until one of the hooded figures ran dry, he had no care to take cover as he reloaded.
He didn't get far.
Before he could even drop the empty mag out he was silenced by two well placed shots to his chest. The second quickly met the same fate.
Once the small firefight was over the same ominous silence fell again. The two marines slowly started to move out, checking both sides as the left the building. Once they gave the all clear John slowly moved towards the door, he turned his head to check on the other two. He saw Glenn checking the area while Zach was pointing behind him at something.
“John! Watch out!"
Before he could respond there was a loud roar of automatic fire and a searing pain in John's left calf. He fell to the floor with a cry of pain. Zach quickly sent multiple rounds towards the figure, some of which accidently hit the machine, sending it into a fit.
A beam of energy struck a wall of the building with a sharp, loud crack sound similar to lighting.
“Noland fall back, Clarke's' been hit."
Glenn turned back towards Zach to give him cover while he went to help John. He was about 5 feet away when another beam came out and came in contact with John's body, merely vaporizing him out of existence.
“Oh my god…" Zach whispered to himself. “We have to get out of here!"
“Where did John go!" Glenn tried to enter the building but Zach pushed him out. “What the hell just happened!?!?"
“I don't know but we have to leave...now!"
The remaining marines left in a hurry, rushing towards the breach in the fence they made earlier. They made it out quickly and started sprinting away from the compound towards the evac point, down one man…

A lone Sergal sat calmly in a small hot spring, it was a rare occasion that she was able to escape the city and relax. The warm water was doing wonders to her muscles, and she could finally tend to her fur without being rushed. She had her sash on the shore and was just about done cleaning herself. Her sash being mainly for show since her entire body was covered by tan and white fur.
Her plan was going to spend the rest of her free day to relax from a long week of overtime after overtime at work. The next thing on her list was to go hunting, it had been awhile since she hunted her own food and she felt the need to do so. She was in the middle of putting her belongings away and refitting her sash when she looked to the sky.
“Such a beautiful day out." She took a large inhale of fresh air. “I need to do this more often-"
She stopped her sentence short when a loud crack and a blue bolt of...lightning struck in the distance. Her inner curiosity and scientist screamed for her to see what caused it but her common sense retorted that it was unnatural and possibly dangerous. A quick inner debate chose for her, depositing her pack in her car. She then proceeded to make her way in the direction she spotted the blue lighting.

John slowly came back to conscious, the first thing he realised, or rather felt, was the searing pain in his whole body. He tried to get up when he noticed his surroundings, this was no insurgent compound, hell this was no Iraq desert wasteland he was used to. What he was surrounded by was more along the lines of thick wild forest.
He propped himself on one knee then proceeded to try and stand, which failed poorly, leaving him on his hands and knees. He completely forgotten about the wound on his left leg. He sat down and removed his pack, searching for his first aid kit. Grabbing something to dress his wound and a pack of aspirin, he quickly wrapped his leg and tied the ends into a knot. The marine then gladly took and aspirin, it wasn't needed but it would help him in the long run.
john then decided to try and make contact with someone, maybe if their was a base near by or a patrolling Humvee.
“Bulldog, this is Alpha-Niner...do you copy." John waited for a response...but nothing not even static. That either meant he had no signal what-so-ever, or the energy beam that struck him fried his radio. Either way he wasn't going anywhere soon.
His mind was still a haze of pain and soreness, so he decided to rest for a bit. He scooted his body to a nearby tree and leaned his head against it. He swung his rifle around and rested it on his lap, he soon dozed off to sleep. Unknown to him was the fact he was being watched the whole time…

The Sergal positioned herself a good distance away from the 'male', she determined upon hearing his voice, so that she would not be noticed. Once she saw his head slump down towards his chest and the grip on...whatever he was holding loosen, she took it as her cue to move forward and investigate what she found.
The first thing she noticed was the pattern clothing he was wearing, possibly military. She also noticed the object he was holding was some sort of firearm, albeit slightly different from the ones her people used to use. There was also a similar weapon on his hip, though smaller.
She then looked at the closer details, mainly the wound on his leg which looked fairly fresh. As she moved up she noticed he was wearing a lot of clothing, in fact she couldn't see an area where she could see what was underneath all of it.
His chest had a lot of pockets and a few small rectangular objects she couldn't determine the use of. He was also wearing a backpack, which she paid little attention to.
Finally she made it to his head, she didn't know of any species that had that short of a maw so she moved past that to learn later on. He also had a helmet and a pair of goggles covering his eyes. Out of curiosity she moved closer to his goggles to maybe see in.
And his eyes were…
“Open!" Her eyes went wide with shock, she tried to move back but before she could she felt his foot on her chest. A second later she found herself on her rump at the base on his feet. She looked back up at him but froze, he had his rifle pointed at her.
“What the hell…" He started looking around franticly, but stopped on her form again. “Oh i'm so fucked…"
He started laughing, and he laughed hard. His entire frame was wracked with a fit of laughter that confused her.
She had no idea he spent the last 6 years fighting suicidal men, women and children over in some god-forsaken desert. Only to wake up to a...wolf...shark...thing staring at him.
“What's so funny?"
“Hmm...oh nothing." Once he was done laughing he looked towards her again. “You wouldn't get it."
“Oh...ok." An awkward silence followed and the two simply stared at each other, or at least she thought he was staring at her, albeit she couldn't tell with the goggles he was wearing.
“So...you're a soldier?" She tried to break the silence.
“Well...yea, but i'm not sure anymore." He started to unbuckle his helmet. “Since I don't think this is my backyard."
“What do you...oh..." She stopped when his face was exposed. “What...what are you."
“Simple, i'm Human." He set his helmet and goggles on the ground. “And guessing by your reaction, you've never seen one before, correct?"
“Yes you would be correct." She looked at his face closely, he had no fur or scales or...anything. “How did you get here?"
“That is a question I can't even answer." He wiped his face with his gloved hands, then gestured to the surrounding forest. “I just kinda appeared…"
“You mean you don't know how you got here?" She asked puzzled
“Well, I could tell you the details leading up to it but…" He motioned towards his leg. “...i'm not in a storytelling mood right now."
“I can take you somewhere to get that treated." She stood up and went to him, intending to help him up. “But afterwards I expect answers, deal?"
“Since it doesn't look like I have much of a choice...fine." He put his helmet back on, and reached up for her hand. “I'm going to need some...assistance."
She got him up and he hung his arm over her shoulder so he could keep as much weight off his leg as possible. She led him towards where she left her car.
-~-
As they entered the clearing John's eyes widened in shock, her car looked...different. He was transfixed on it until he felt a firm but careful shove on his back.
“Oh, sorry...just not used to...that." He resumed walking, she led him to the passenger side where the door opened automatically. “The vehicles from my world are a lot more basic."
With her help he slowly positioned himself comfortably in the seat, he almost immediately felt his eyes close. Until he heard her door close and felt her hand on his shoulder shortly after.
“You can rest if you want." She pushed a button on the dash and John felt a slight vibration coming from the car. “It's a fairly long drive."
“Must be electric…" There had only been a few electric cars that actually worked back home. But one thing he was sure of was that nap she offered. “Hmm, you read my mind."
He then removed his helmet and rested it on his lap, he was surprised to find that when he leaned back that the seats were really comfy. He was soon sinking into a shallow slumber he knew would end all too soon.
They always did.
