“Was this boy the one you were referring to as the demon with a smile?"
That is correct, he may had looked like any other child but deep down, he was something completely different. I am certain that those who followed him without question, also knew he was special the moment they stood by his side. I looked up to meet his gaze staring back down at me. Wearing a steel black zip up jacket along with some grey cargo pants, he wasn't equipped with the typical draft issued gear which made him clearly stand out from everyone else. “I gotta say, the way you killed him was awesome and also pretty fucked up. You're strong and i like that!" He held out his hand towards me, tattoos of unknown pattern covered every inch of it. I reached back with my own hand. He pulled me from off the ground little effort and tried to wipe off any dirt and blood that still remained on me. “ if you are wondering, i'm the leader of this little group, call me Vincent for now. Once i get to know ya and trust ya, I'll let you call me by my real name."
All of this was happening too fast for me, the fact that I killed another human being didn't faze him at the slightest nor did it affect the others around him. He was dangerous from the start but he spoke to me as if we were lifelong friends which we did for the majority of the time i was spent with him. The path he led me down however, was beyond what i would have imagine. “I guess i should introduce ya to everyone else, there's a total of 14 of us but i sent a couple of my boys out on scavenging runs so they'll be gone for awhile. These two right here are hunter and grizzly." He said, gesturing towards the two guy Looming behind him, they were the size as cooper, maybe even bigger! The one on the left held distinct characteristics from beta, having a mix skin tone due to the mild weather. His stone face easily matched the sharp buzz cut. His forest green eyes pierced right through my soul.
The one on the hand, had long flowing hair tied neatly into an short ponytail. His face was greyish in color with dark circles starting to form around the eyes. The cold winter months were never merciful for the residents of omaga. “i saved both their lives back before everything fell, they've been by my side ever since. Can't understand a lick of what they are saying though but it's ok, as long as they can beat the shit out of the people!" Vincent said, playfully hitting grizzly on the shoulder. He softly nodded before slightly bowing to him. He said something but it was indeed a language i could not understand.
“The one hiding by the tree over there is Mira. She's the youngest one in our group and also the most mischievous of all of us but i love her to death either way. Hey Mira! Stop hiding and say hi to the new kid!" He barked. Sounds of someone pushing away brush was heard behind me, I was slow to react as an small shadow came scurrying pass my legs and towards one of the big dudes. A Girl, about half the size of me, poked her head out from behind hunter's leg. She had on a black, worn down scarf that was wrapped around her neck. “Hey there young one, I'm Dex, It's a pleasure to meet you." I said, putting on a friendly smile. “H-hi Dex, I'm M-mira." She stuttered, refusing to budge from her spot while continuing to stare in my general direction.
“I forgot to mention, she can't see a thing." The leader chimed in. Upon closer inspection, her eyes were milky white with the moon's light illuminating off them she was completely blind. “Don't be fooled by her lack of sight, she could hear your heartbeat from a mile out." Vincent said as he walked closer to my face, his smile grew wider by the second. “I'm a firm believer of fate Dex, it drew a colorful variety of survivors to me with backstories that seem out of this world. Tell me my friend, what made fate choose you for me to meet?" I was getting bad vibes from this guy when he asked me that question, something about him seemed off but knowing my current situation, all I could say to him was: “I just don't want to die, I want to live."
“No one wants to die, it's only natural but I want more than just survival. Even in times of despair, my heart yearns for something far greater. One of these days, i will find out what you desire most in this wicked life." I didn't know what i truly wanted after all that happened. I thought that staying alive for as long as I can was all that mattered but Vincent felt otherwise. He searched deep within my heart to find what I wanted most and he took in that knowledge to insure that I would stay by his side.
“What exactly did you want?"
That question is no longer relevant, the dreams I once sought after are dead and gone. All that's left now me and my memories, take in the story as you see fit.
Our little meet and greet dragged on well within the night. Eventually, more of Vincent's crew came back with much needed medical supplies and food. I didn't know where they found the stuff but I was glad either way, especially the food. My wounds were treated by the group's wannabe doctor who was at the verge of starting medical school but was cut short by the military draft. I gotta say, he did a decent job, cleaning out the cuts and scrapes i obtain from cooper and carefully applied the bandages.
Everyone gave me an warm welcome, mostly asking simple stuff like what school i was enrolled in instance or what video game i played. It turned that one of my classmates was also part of Vincent's group. We didn't know each other personally but he told me that he was glad that someone in the same homeroom class as him survive. I could tell that he was looking forward to making up on lost time, which i didn't mind at all. We had a sad excuse of a feast around a campfire, distributing M.R.E's to the entire group. Some ate there food silently while others cracked jokes to lighten up the mood. I for one, felt relaxed for the first time in a long time. Hours past and the once bustling flames that shrouded us in much needed warmth was nothing more but crackling Embers. I look around to see that Vincent was nowhere in sight along with grizzly and hunter.
