Severed: Chapter 4
Chapter four of Severed, here I was sort of developing an issue for Russell to overcome and that was having to deal with learning to speak again.

"Wake up...wake up..."
I hear a voice, a familiar voice. Where was it? My eyes couldn't focus, but the room I was in was dimly lit. Things started to focus more, I see...bookshelves? Wait a minute...these bookshelves, I've seen these before.
I pull one book from the closest shelf to me, my arms, my hands, it's still my new body. I felt a chill down my spine as I open the book slowly. The blank page slowly has a sentence appear...
"Wake up, Russell,"
My eyes widen, am I dreaming again? I close the book and look up. The demon from my coma, it has returned! I go to scream, but nothing. His spiny hand slowly covers my face and everything goes white. I feel my eyes opening up again, and again, and again. Finally, I see lights, the ceiling lights of my new room. I sit up, looking around and making sure my mind wasn't playing tricks on me again. I go to rub my eyes, hitting my muzzle in the process. It hurt and I let out a faint yelp. "Yerrff," I muttered, as I cover my muzzle with both my hands out of hurt and embarrassment of hitting myself. Not quite used to this body, but my mind seems to all be there.
I sat in bed, wondering what the day had in store for me. My talking skills need to be honed in, this body seems to have the ability to let me talk and such, but I need to learn the basics all over again. I lift the covers off, and oh boy...I'm still naked. Sure, I have fur but as I looked down, well...it's kinda noticeable. I feel my face blush and I pull the covers back over me. I need clothes, have they thought this out? I wasn't sure. Hell, I don't even know if they expected my mind to even transfer to this body.
Speaking of which, this body, what was it supposed to be? I'm white all over, my foot paws have pinkish paw pads, my hands have sort of paw pads as well. I see in the mirror over to my left, the upper portions of my ears were black. Seemed to be the only markings my body had. My vision was sort of blurry. I realised, my glasses! Had my vision issues come with my consciousness? I rubbed my eyes once more and look towards the mirror and it was still blurry. Dang it.
I lie back down, staring at the ceiling and wondering what happened to everyone I knew. When I first woke, I overheard the doctors say it's been years, but how long was it? I wanted to know, but most importantly two people that mattered most to me. My father and my girlfriend, do they believe I'm dead? Have they moved on? Before I get lost in thought again, I hear a knock on the door. "Russell? Are you awake?" said a voice from outside. They sounded female, probably late 30's early 40's sounding. I try and muster up the effort to talk, "Yeeeaaf" I managed to say. The door opens, it's one of the doctors I first saw from coming out of my coma.
She grabs the chair from across the room and brings it towards the bed. She also hands me a notebook, my eyes widen as she hands it to me and I can finally ask questions I've been wanting to. "Oh my, haha, you're eager to ask things, what is it?" she asks me.
I write down how long I was in a coma and where my father and girlfriend where. I hand back the notebook. The doctor looks at what I wrote and has a puzzled look on her face. "Well Russell, you were in a coma for eight years. It's November 11th, 2018, you were oddly enough transferred into your new body on your birthday. Rather fitting, I would say, we never actually planned that. Our head doctor pointed that out after we sedated your old body for the last time. He said it truly was your rebirth," she says. I let out a sigh, eight years? My god, how much has the world changed?
My ears perk up and I look back at the doctor, she noticed my look of concern. "You want us to reach out to those two? We can let them know you're awake and okay, but with a new body. We'll have to give them clearance first. We had those two people listed on your contacts, we pulled your emergency contacts from your old place of employment. I hope they're ready to handle how you are now," she says, with much uncertainty in her voice. I mean, I'm a living humanized animal.
And just like that, my other question finally came back to me. I gestured for the notebook again. "Oh, here you go. What is it?" she asks. I write down my question for her to read and hand it back. She reads and gives me a smirk. "Your body was inspired by an arctic fox, Russell," she says to me. An arctic fox? Huh, I do like foxes anyway. Well that answers that. But one more question for the doctor. She hands back the notebook, and I write away. Handing it back, she lets out a laugh. "Russell, we already have some clothes for you. They're a bit bulky, but they'll work. I'll get them for you. We don't have shoes however, as nothing would fit you correctly and your foot pads are quite durable and grippy! Your own natural shoes!" she says with a smile.
"Alright Russell, I'll fetch you your clothes and we'll have our first speech lessons for the day. We'll contact your girlfriend and father later on," she says as she gets up from the old chair and walks to the door. "I'll be back,"
The door closes and I decide to get and up venture towards the mirror to get acquainted with my new body. My eyes were a light shade of blue, I had sort of hair I guess, it had the texture of hair despite being white like my fur. I run my hands through my hair and it felt very naturally like hair would. Strange but I liked it, I smirk and little by little this body is growing on me. I wasn't very fond of my appearance as a human. But this? Man, I felt suave and handsome. It was quite the nice confidence boost. As I loose track of time looking in the mirror, the doctor came back with a handful of folded clothes and with a surprise, a pair of glasses! "We read up in your medical history that you had vision issues, so we made a pair of glasses just in case! Did you need them?" she asked. I nodded happily. I take them and rest them on the top of my muzzle and adjust them. The had no arms on the side of them, for obvious reasons. But the arch of the glasses fit just right! Ah, and just like that, I can see!
With a smile I take my new clothes from the kind doctor. She exits after handing them off, leaving me to get dressed. With a deep breath, I start to accept the start of this second chance at life.
