#1 of The Tale Of Lyncelia

Well, this is my first ever attempt at writing, and i hope you like it ^^. The inspiration for this came from an anime called Elfen Leid, although it isn't really similar to it, i was just inspired by it. I do plan on continuing this soon, and i appreciate any votes and comments :D. Criticism and opinions are welcome, because it will only improve my writing : ).

P.S. Thank you to 3nigmax for beta reading and making suggestions that really helped this story come along. Enjoy the story!

As the bell rang, the students of Ellenwood Elementary School came running through the hallways, each heading to their classrooms to begin another boring day of education. Among these students was Wayne, a 10 year old 4th grader. He took his seat in his classroom with a big smile on his face, unable to sit still. He had never really been excited about going to school, but that day he and his friends planned on exploring the forest near the school during recess, even though it was against the rules. It wouldn't have been the first time he had been there, but he had always enjoyed the atmosphere that the area provides.

Before he got too lost in thought, their teacher, Mrs. Larkin, walked in.

"Good morning class, I hope you have all prepared for today's science test. You should be fine as long as you went over the review that I handed out yesterday, but if not, well....good luck."

The class all let out a long moan. All except for Wayne, who seemed to be in his own little world. He snapped back to reality as Mrs. Larkin placed the test on his desk. Although disappointed that he had to start his day with a test, he still had a smile on his face while beginning to answer the first question.

A few long hours later, it was lunch time, and Wayne sat at his usual table with his friends Jason, Mark, Derek, and David.

"So, as soon as lunch is over and recess begins, we are gonna meet at the hole in the fence behind the slide, right?" Derek asked.

"That's the plan. And remember, if a teacher sees us, split up and meet at Marks house." David stated.

"Yeah, my big brother will cover for us and tell the school that my mom needed to see us." Mark added.

Wayne got up from the table, "I'm gonna go ahead and go now, I'll meet up with you guys in the forest, kay?"

"Okay" the group said as Wayne walked off towards the playground. "I wonder why he's in such a hurry..." Jason said. "Maybe he got scared and is gonna hide somewhere in the school while we go out." David answered. "No way, he loves going to the forest too much to skip out on us. He probably just wanted to get a head start and explore it alone for a little bit." said Derek.

The group just dropped it and continued eating while Wayne made his way to the playground, where the kids from the other building were already playing. As he approached the hole in the fence surrounding the playground, he looked around to see if any teachers were watching. The hole was used by mischievous students to get in and out of the school whenever they pleased, and it is kept hidden behind some bushes so that teachers would not discover it and make repairs. Once the coast was clear, he crawled through the bushes and though the fence. Once outside, he dashed into the nearby forest, and was immediately obscured by trees.

After the playground was out of sight, he began to slow down into a walk, and eventually found a nice stump to sit down on. The peace and tranquility of this area was very appealing to Wayne, and he always felt more relaxed here. He listened to the birds chirping, and watched the light on the ground dance as the trees blew in the wind overhead.

After a few moments of relaxation, he heard a rustling sound in the surrounding bushes. He figured it was just the wind, and thought no more of it. A few moments later, he heard it yet again, this time followed by what sounded like a thud and a yelping noise. He thought it was probably his friends trying to play a prank on him, so he got up and dashed towards the source of the commotion. As he parted the bush where the noise seemed to come from, he let out a sigh of relief. At first glance, it seemed to be brown dog hunched over with its leg caught on a root. Wayne slowly reached down and untangled the root off of the poor things leg. After he was finished, the dog started to get up, and to his surprise, it lifted itself up onto its two back legs, and stood up like a human does! It just stared at him, with an almost scared look on its face. It was about three feet tall, almost the same as Wayne, and had deep blue eyes.

It hesitantly opened its muzzle and dropped its gaze to stare down at the ground, and in a high, clearly feminine voice, said ".......Th...thank you for helping me....

*Earlier, at about the same time that school was starting, deep in the forest*

"Mom, can I go play? I'm bored sitting around the den all morning." said the little lycanthrope (not the morphing kind, just like a humanoid wolf).

"Go ahead, have fun. I'll howl when your father returns with lunch. But try to stay away from that school. If any humans see you, they might try to capture or hurt you."

"I know I know, daddy already warned me about humans after the last time I saw one." she said with a frown.

"You know your father just doesn't want you to get hurt. You are our little girl, we just want you to stay safe and out of danger, okay?"

"Yeah, I know. I'll see ya when I get back!" she said and then began running from the den.

She had recently been very interested in humans, especially the ones her age from the school. There was nobody else around that she could make friends with, and she got very lonely. However, all of her attempts to make a friend failed miserably, and usually ended with either her being chased off, or the person just running away, not even attempting to talk with her. She quickly learned not to openly approach them, but still found it entertaining to observe them from afar.

After a few hours of mindlessly wandering around the forest, searching for something to entertain herself with, she came across a sparkling spring full of clear, blue water, and decided to take a dip. She leapt in the water, and giggled to herself with glee as she splashed and swam around, but she quickly became bored, being the only one there and having no one to play with. So she got out, shook herself dry and thought about what she wanted to do next. She decided to head towards the school, despite her promise to her mom, to see if there was anyone around that she could watch.

After the long walk through the forest towards the school, she saw a boy, around her age, sitting down on a stump. He didn't seem to notice her as she slumped down into the bushes nearby. She watched him for a little while, but all he did was sit there, occasionally changing where he was staring. However, she still greatly enjoyed spying on the human.

Just then, she felt a tickling feeling on the back of her leg. She slowly turned her head to see what the source was, and she saw quite a large beetle crawling on her leg. The tickling was starting to become unbearable, but she didn't want to make any noise at the risk of being discovered, so she began swatting at it to get it off. To her disappointment, it was unwavering, and continued its tickling assault.

She was close to bursting with laughter, so she swiped it as hard as she could to fling it off of her. She was successful, but the movement caused a loud rustling in the bush. The human turned and looked in her direction, and she attempted to slowly back away. However, fortune was once again not on her side, and she got her leg tangled in a root while backing up, and landed flat on her rump, letting out a yelp. She turned and struggled to get free, but she couldn't, so she just laid there as the human approached and decided to accept whatever fate that befell her.

Instead of the screaming she expected to hear from behind her, she felt the boy untangling the root off of her leg. She didn't know why he was helping her, but still she was grateful. Once he finished, she slowly got up, and noticed his caring expression change to one of slight surprise once she was standing. She figured that a thanks was in order, even if he would probably run away or scream at her. So she shyly looked at the ground and mustered up the courage to speak, and through her quivering muzzle said, ".......Th...thank you for helping me...."

"Y...you can talk?!?!" stuttered Wayne, who was in complete shock.

For a moment they just stood there, staring into each others eyes. Wayne couldn't help but notice how mesmerizing her sparkling blue eyes were. She too found herself lost in his gaze, until she finally realized that he asked her a question.

"Um.....yes...I can....Please don't run away!" She said as he began to slowly back up.

"O....okay. It's just that I'm not used to dogs talking to me, or standing on two legs for that matter..." He said as he began to regain his composure.

"Excuse me, but do I look like a dog to you...? She said in an agitated voice. "Oh, sorry, its just that being called a dog is a bit demeaning to me, that's all....I don't know what I am, but I am definitely not a dog..."

"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. What's your name? And why were you sneaking around?" he said with a confused look. "My name is Lyncelia, and I was sneaking because all the people I meet either chase me away or run...I think they see me as a...*sniff*...a monster..." She said as she began to cry.

"You're not a monster..." he said as he walked forward and placed his hand on her shoulder. She winced as she thought he was going to hurt her, but then relaxed after hearing him say that. "In fact, I think you're kinda cool! How come I've never seen you around here? I spend a lot of time in this forest."

"I'm always either at home deep in the forest or sneaking around here looking for something to do...there isn't anyone else like me around except for my mom and dad, and I'm always alone when I'm out playing... not that playing alone is very fun or anything..." Lyncelia stared at the ground with a heavy sigh.

"Nobody should always be alone...I'll be your friend! I love spending time here, and I wouldn't mind being around you!" said Wayne with a big smile and sparkling eyes.

"You're really willing to be friends...with something like me...?" she said as her eyes began to water once more.

"Sure! Why wouldn't I be? You're nice, and I bet we can have lots of fun together!"

Lyncelia was speechless. She finally had a friend to spend time with and to play with. She couldn't think of any thing to say in order to thank him, so she walked towards him and wrapped him in a warm embrace. This caught Wayne a little off guard, but with a blush on his face he slowly relaxed and returned the hug.

A few moments later she released him after realizing what she just did. She blushed slightly as well and looked to the ground and began to mutter apologies. "I...I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that, I'm just so happy that I'm not alone anymore..." "It's fine, you just surprised me is all." He reassured her. "By the way, my name is Wayne, what was yours again?

"Wayne... I like that name" she said with a smile. "I'm Lyncelia."

"Lyncelia...that's a nice name! It's cool and unique, so it matches its owner!" said Wayne. She blushed at the compliment, and watched as Wayne walked off and jumped onto the stump he was sitting on earlier. He turned to her and shouted, "So, what do you wanna do? I got all day to be here, the teachers from school won't come looking here, and my parents know that I'm here if I don't go straight home."

‘Wow, he sure is energetic' she thought. "We can go swimming if you want, I found a great place nearby with a huge spring that's perfect for swimming!" She said with hope. She loved swimming, and thought having a friend with her would be even more fun. "That sounds great! I love to swim!" Wayne replied as he jumped down off the stump. "Lead the way!"

Lyncelia smiled as they ran towards the spring she had found earlier. She was so excited to finally have someone to play with, and that he wasn't repulsed by her. Wayne too was extremely happy. He made a new friend, and thought she was really cool.

When they arrived, Lyncelia turned back to face her new friend, but as she did, her smile turned to a frown. Wayne was nowhere in sight. She felt tears building up in her eyes as she turned back towards the water... ‘He abandoned me...I knew he wouldn't want me as a friend...he probably just pretended to like m-!!!!' Her thought were cut short as she felt something tackle her from behind and tumble with her into the water. Thankfully it was pretty deep.

*Splash* Splash*

She swam towards the surface and took a deep breath as soon as she reached it. She looked around in confusion at what just happened. A few moments later, she heard a splash, followed by a long bout of laughter coming from behind her. She turned around to see Wayne laughing hysterically and splashing around.

"Aaaaahahahaha! You should have seen your face when you....you fell towards the water! It was hilarious!!!! I can't believe you thought I woul- *SPLASH* Before he could even finish his sentence he heard a small growling noise as a pair of paws on his shoulders pushed him down into the water. When he resurfaced, he saw Lyncelia staring at him with a hurt expression. He began thinking of an apology, but before he was given a chance she smiled and swam towards him to give him another hug. She was hurt that he would make her think he left, but she was also overjoyed that he really didn't, and was here with her.

"Um...Lyncelia? Are you okay?" He said as he heard a small sniffle.

"I thought you left me alone and ran away from me... I didn't want to lose the only friend I've ever had...But I'm so happy you didn't leave." Her small tears were tears of joy. She released him with a blush after realizing that she had done it again, and was very embarrassed. "It's ok, I don't mind hugging you. It feels nice to be hugged by a friend" he said with a caring smile on his face. This only made her blush more, and she tried to change the subject by splashing him in the face while giggling. He caught wind of what she was trying to do and responded with a splash of his own, effectively starting a splash fight.

************************************************************************

After a few hours of fun and relaxation, the two got out of the water to set about drying off. Lyncelia simply shook the water off, while Wayne just figured he could sun dry. They sat down by the edge of the water and enjoyed each others company.

"That was the most fun I've ever had here..." said Wayne with a contented sigh. "Me too..." Lyncelia replied. "We should do this again sometime!" she added. "Definitely. I'll try my best to come visit as often as I can. You're a good friend Lyn."

"Lyn...?" She said with a confused look. Wayne turned his head to face her. "Yeah, Lyn. I think that's what I'll call you from now on. It's not that I don't like Lyncelia, Lyn is just easier, like a nickname." He said with a happy expression. Lyn looked down and thought a little before looking back up with a smile of her own saying "I like it..." Just then she realized that she hadn't gone to the restroom all day. "Ahem...I'll be right back okay Wayne? I have to go tinkle" She said with a slowly forming blush. Wayne laughed and said "Okay, I'll wait for you here."

Just as Lyn left the vicinity of the spring, Wayne heard yelling from ahead. "WAAAAAYNE!" Four kids were running in his direction, and Wayne soon made them out to be his friends Jason, Derek, David and Mark. They soon reached him and all began their questioning.

"Where have you been?" "We've been looking all over for you!" "Why are you wet?" "Why did you leave us behind?" All these questions were being thrown at Wayne at the same time, but before he could answer any of them, they all turned towards a loud rustling in the bushes nearby. As Lyn made her way through, Wayne smiled at her return, while the others simply stared with open mouths.

After a moment Lyn realized that they weren't alone anymore and looked to the 4 friends, then at Wayne with a confused expression. Before Wayne could get a word out, Derek shouted "What the hell is that thing?" followed by David shouting "It's a monster!" Then Jason said "It must have attacked Wayne and pushed him into the water!"

Lyn just shook her head as she began to sob at all the things they were shouting. Wayne began walking towards her but the four of them rushed past him to chase off the "monster." Wayne shouted "No! She's a friend, and she's not a monster, please stop!" However, his plea fell upon deaf ears as they rushed towards her and grabbed her before she could run. They carried her towards the spring and roughly threw her in as Wayne ran towards them in an effort to stop them.

Jason stepped forward. "How do YOU like it, freak?" The others all laughed, and David said "Get out of here before we decide to drown you!" Wayne crashed through them all and shouted "Leave her alone! She didn't do anything to me, she's my friend!" They all stared at him wide-eyed, but as he turned to apologize to Lyn for his friends behavior, he only saw an empty spring, and a trail of wet paw prints leading deep into the forest.

Wayne turned around to face his four confused friends. "Why did you do that! She was my friend, and you all scared her away and said terrible things!" They all continued to stare blankly at him until Derek finally said, "How can you be friends with that THING?" Then Mark stepped forward saying "All this time in the forest is getting to his head, he thinks freakish animals are his friends! We need to get him home so he can rest and think clearly again." They all grabbed him and slowly dragged him out of the forest. All the while Wayne shouted "LYN! IM SO SORRY! PLEASE FORGIVE ME, I DIDN"T MEAN FOR THIS TO HAPPEN!

Upon arriving at his house, his friends told his mother the story and all walked off to their own houses. It was getting late, and the sun was about to set for the day. She turned to him with a stern look and said "Is what they said true? Were you hanging around wild animals in the forest? You know that's dangerous, and you can get hurt! I have told you time after time that you need to be careful while in that forest, and now I hear that you are attacked by some wild dog? Get upstairs right now and go to you're room. I think you need a break from that forest young man. Its not healthy for a young boy to spend so much time away from civilization. From now on I want you home by four o' clock, no excuses or forest visits. Maybe you will be mature enough to explore the forest when you are older." With that, she turned away into the kitchen while Wayne walked into his room without a word.

Soon after closing his door and collapsing on his bed, he began to lightly sob...

"I'm so sorry Lyn...*sniff*...I didn't mean to let that happen...*sniff*... I just hope you can forgive me and we can see each other again...." After a few more hours of crying, he eventually drifted to sleep...
