#1 of The Start of Something New

I spent forever writing this on impulse and kinda want to know what people outside of my usual fursite thought. I'm not sure how much I like it so far, but I hope you do. I plan on keeping this story safe for work and I won't post again until I get a few good reviews. So, hope you enjoy, and don't think it's a waste of time to read it.

With a sigh, I stepped out of my mom's old beat up chevy and out onto the wet pavement. Lifting my dress with one paw and waving her off with the other, I made my way to the school. The air around me was filled with the sound of music and a sort of buzz that only came from nervousness.

Having only been at this little school for a few weeks, I knew already that I didn't fit in very well. The other furs in my grade were more stuck up than I was, and they liked to prove it to me with their noses stuck in the air as if they were smelling something rather foul. A few guys seemed nice enough, but most simply chose to ignore me.

I wasn't sure why my mom had forced me to go to this dance. She had lent me her prom dress, made of beautiful pale purple cloth lined with ruffles and a large skirt. The purple looked so beautiful against my grey fur, and the halter top showed off my shoulders well. The ruffles seemed to play up all my curves, making me look much sexier than I felt. I had applied just the right make up to help my blue eyes stand out, and yet I still felt dull and shy as I made my way inside the gym.

I pushed open the door and stood in line, thinking to myself. "This girls look like a million bucks. They're probably all wearing that much money, while I have on this shabby old thing. What a piece of junk. I wish I never came. No guy is gonna look at me when they have these beauties to compare me to." And so it went, my inner raging. I almost tripped over some one as the line moved, and impatient sighs could be head all around me. My stomach was alight with nervous butterflies as I handed my ticket to a woman in a cheesy looking uniform.

I hadn't even taken notice of the decorations before that point, and I took a moment to take it all in and calm myself down before entering the dance floor. The gym walls were disguised with a satin-looking blue fabric, which was draped over some tables and across the rafters. Glitter made the floor shimmer as the dj's lights flashed and spun. There was a table with what could only be described as five-star dining made to look like snacks. Maybe it was the other way around. To say the least, it was as if we were in a movie or something, and this was prom. In all actuality, this was only a simple winter dance and if this were a movie, I'd look ten times better and far more expensive.

With my heart beating in my chest, I made my way to the dance floor after stashing my shoes with all the other furs'. The music was catchy, and I quickly found myself bopping to the beat. I felt foolish, in a way, but the music moved through me, making me shimmy and shake in my own little world.

"Hey, watch it!" I heard some one snap, and I turned bright red under my fur. I twisted away from the group I had some how made my way into, looking for anyone in particular who looked like they could be friendly. Tears began to well in my eyes, blurring my vision and sending me rushing to the bathroom.

Once inside, I took a few deep breaths, calming myself down and patting some water on my face to help with the redness. After a moment, a girl I didn't recognize came in with a rush of noise as the door opened. I avoided her gaze, staring at myself in the mirror.

"Hey," she murmured, almost inaudibly, "you okay?"

"Wha- oh. I guess." I replied, flushing red once more.

With the first friendly smile I'd seen all night, the dalmation said, "I like your dress. And... uhm... my friends and I were wondering if you'd like to dance with us? Being new here sucks, and everyone's so unforgiving of every little thing you do. I thought we could try to get to know you, if you wanted."

Her eyes seemed to sparkle in a way I didn't even recognize as she took in my feline features in my dress, and I blushed more out of shyness than embarrassment. I nodded and followed her out onto the floor, where the dance was in full swing. She introduced me to her friends, two females, a fox and a doe, and male wolf. The wolf was exceptionally cute in that sweet, soft way that typically came from being gay, or an actor from school plays. Or both, whatever. The doe was rather pretty with her large eyes, while the fox had a nice figure.

The wolf, named Marky, took me by the paw and danced around me, which sent a whole other swarm of butterflies into my stomach. He bumped against me with a smile that could light up the room. In a rather random burst of courage, I spun and pulled him against my back. His friends seemed a bit surprised as we danced, bodies moving in perfect rhythm to the loud, bassy beat that played over the speakers. We did what could only be described as grinding, with him pressed against my backside as we swayed and rubbed against one another. His paws played against my side, rubbing first up, then down, then back again, before resting firmly on the curvy part of my hips. Even I was surprised at how much he seemed to like being pressed against my backside, and I figured if we were in a well-lit room, walking after this could prove to be a bit embarrassing for him. His lips made their way up my neck, causing me to murr slightly and dig my claws against his paws. He yelped and stepped back a bit, and the spell was broken.

The wolf and I met each others eyes for a brief moment, and I instantly knew I'd made a new friend, whether it was a completely innocent friendship or not. His friends were still dancing around us without noticing that we had stopped. When they did, we all decided to go grab some drinks and chat a bit.

We made out way to the table, snaking in and out of the groups of people, and we each grabbed some punch before making our way to an empty table. The conversation started, loud and overwhelming, and I just sat there, feeling a bit out of it.

"Jade," murmured the dalmation, "are you alright?"

"I'm great, actually. I'm rather surprised to find myself enjoying this." I responded, my eyes never leaving the wolf's. "I thought it was just going to be a bunch of stuck up rich kinds. I'm glad you guys decided to talk to me."

"Uh huh." She replied with a giggle. "You're happy we talked to you? Or our wolven friend here?" Her smirk made me flush again, and I avoided her gaze without answering.

Just as I was about to break the awkward silence that followed, my phone buzzed. I reached inside my little purse and pulled it out, flipping it open.

"Arg. Sorry guys, it's my mom. Just a sec." I was already putting the phone to my ear. After a few minutes of heated conversation, mom informed me that she was coming to pick me up.

"I'm sorry. I hate to do this, but I have to run. Mom has me on this dumb curfew... and she's coming to get me. Can I get your numbers so we can hang out sometime?" I enquired with a sleepy smile. We exchanged numbers and goodbyes, and I made my way to the door.

As I stepped out into the cool night, Marky caught up to me, grabbing me by the arm. He kissed my cheek with a blush and a smile, and whispered. "I'm not sure why, Jade, but I'm really interested in you. Please, can I call you tonight? Or even text you?"

I smiled and nodded before giving him a hug and making my way to my car. He watched all the while and I couldn't help but add that extra bounce to my step before I had to avoid the questions about the wolf from my mother, whose catlike mothering skills could rival any predatory animals hunting ones.

After returning home, I removed my make up and hopped in the shower. When I was finished and my headfur was blown dry and in a ponytail, my phone buzzed.

And I leave with suspense... kinda. I'll continue if some one asks me to, I suppose. I have writers block, at the moment. I'm not sure how much I like the story line, so far, but I hope to advance it on my next post. Please tell me what you think!
