Chapter 6: Make Like A Bum
#6 of In Chaos
The thud of Sonic falling to the floor was enough of a noise to wake the light sleeper that was Edward. He almost instantly popped up to a seated position in his bed, then looked for the source of the noise. That's when he remembered that he had a guest over, and that his guest had already guessed that he may fall out of the bed he was sleeping in. He could see Sonic from his vantage point on the top bunk, and watched him as he checked his body for injury, then shrugged and proceeded to stretch.
Sonic, however, didn't know that his thump had awoken Ed. He made sure to keep quiet as he stretched, bending this way and that to remove the air pockets from his spine to allow for free, loose movement when it came to doing his signature moves; namely, the Spin Dash.
Just thinking about it made Sonic yearn for the open air. He knew that he had to continue to uphold the cover of a schoolboy while he was here, in order to not draw any attention to himself. He also knew that Shadow would do the same, but only for the reason of keeping an eye on him and making sure he didn't gather the Emeralds himself.
Sonic caught a slight movement out of the corner of his eye, so he turned his head... and got caught right in the face by a flying pillow. Ed laughed as the object caught Sonic off balance, and caused him to fall. His laughter was short lived, however, as the very same pillow caught him from behind, in the back of the head. He blinked, looking at Sonic, who seemingly hadn't moved from his spot.
Grinning, Sonic kept his attack a secret. He was going to keep his speedy talent a secret as long as he could, at least until there was a meaningful reason to use it. (Little did he know that such a reason would become apparent on Monday, but that's best left for a future chapter!)
Instead, Sonic looked Edward directly in the eye. "When d'ya'll eat around here? I don't mean to be rude, but I didn't eat all day yesterday, save for that wonderful dinner last night, and I'm one starved hedgehog."
Edward was about to open his mouth in reply when a voice wafted up from downstairs.
"Edna! Boys! Breakfast! Get down here and eat before it gets cold on you!" It was Edward's mother calling.
"We eat now, apparently," replied Edward, delayed, and with a grin on his smug face. He hopped out of bed, reached for the glasses he'd placed on his dresser the night before, and walked down to breakfast still in his PJ's, rapping on Edna's door as he passed.
Sonic followed, wearing his school clothes from the day before, as he had nothing else to wear. He could have almost sworn he heard Ed mutter through the door to his sister something about making sure she wore clothing down to the breakfast table this time. An odd remark, to be sure, but then Sonic really couldn't say anything; before being transported to this universe, he'd never worn clothing save for his socks and shoes, and the occasional pair of sunglasses!
Sonic made sure to walk at least a little slower than he usually did. His average walking speed was a light jog, but he figured he'd rather not draw attention to himself and his habit before the attention was needed. He joined Edward at the breakfast table, looking over the feast of waffles that had been laid out upon it. He hoped there was enough syrup to drown a hedgehog in, because that was his usual fare for eating waffles: Amy was the only one that ever cooked them, and she somehow managed to make them taste awful every time she did.
Edna joined them soon afterwards, and looked like she had found the skimpiest clothing in her arsenal and decided to wear that. Whereas Edward was dressed in a modest two-piece men's flannel, Edna looked like she had taken an Ace bandage and wrapped it around her torso, then found a short-as-short-gets-without-being-a-belt skirt to match it. Sonic's jaw dropped when she bounded into the dining room, and he nearly choked on the waffle he was chewing. He recovered, though, going back to eating his plate of food.
Ed's mother doing dishes in the kitchen, and every now and again would pop her head into the dining room to check on the kids. She had a strange feeling about the hedgehog, but it wasn't a bad feeling. He seemed friendly enough, and it was obvious that he had a good heart. It just felt like he was older than he looked, and he looked to be about 13. As she was pondering these thoughts, the phone rang, and she hurriedly dried her hands and rushed to answer it.
Now, let me take this time to break the fourth wall and explain to the readers something about Chaos teleportation. Some universes run on the same timeline as others, whereas some are faster, and others are slower. In Sonic's own universe, the hedgehog is 16, nearly 17. Edward and Edna's universe runs a bit slower than Sonic's own, so here the hedgehog appears to be just beginning his teenage years. Luckily for him (and for you readers!) this lapse in age doesn't affect his skills, nor does it do anything to the knowledge he possesses. If the roles were reversed and Edward and Edna were to be entering Sonic's domain, Edward would be about 17, and Edna about 15. Now, back to the story.
Sonic heard the phone ring, but though nothing of it. He finished his third waffle and leaned back, placing his hands on his stomach and sighing in satisfaction. Three waffles, he thought to himself. That's gotta be a personal record.
Edward sat back after he finished his second waffle, and looked at Sonic in awe. He'd never seen anyone eat so much, so fast. Wait, no, he had, but that same person wasn't able to keep the food down, and minutes after the guy had eaten, he turned around and emptied his stomach of it.
His awe subsided, though, as he decided he would much rather sit there and sigh in content. His sister continued eating, doing so much slower than the boys had. She wasn't one to make herself look like a pig.
Edward's mother could be heard in the kitchen hanging up from the phone call. Second later, her head popped into the room and she looked directly at Sonic. "Sonic, dear, that was Miss Corby."
"Miss... Corby? Am I supposed to know her?" Sonic tried to sound inquisitive without coming off as rude.
"Miss Corby is the head of the Foreign Exchange Commission, and Vice President of the St. Lovejoy's Educational Committee. I guess you wouldn't know her, since the students aren't really informed of what's going on in these programs, or who to talk to. She called the Principal of the school last night, informing him of the plane crash that happened last week. Remember that, Edward?" She directed the last comment/question towards her son, who nodded dimly.
"Yeah..." he replied slowly. "Nobody survived. Some kind of terrorists hijacked the plane and crashed it in the ocean. It was bound for the airport near here, and came out of Japan."
Sonic cocked his head to the side. He didn't know where this was going, but he figured that this Miss Corby thought that he and Shadow were two foreign exchange students from Japan, and if this were the case, then fitting in here would be easier than previously thought.
"I can't for the life of me remember your Principal's name," she continued. "Anyway, he told her that you and your... brother? Is Shadow the name of your brother?" She didn't wait for an answer, but continued on after a short pause. "He told Miss Corby that you and your brother were the foreign exchange students, and that you must have gotten on a different flight from Japan, one that left later than the original one. He told her to call here, and that you might know where your brother ran off to.
"Anyway, she says she's coming over in about an hour to pick you up and take you to the parent who'll be taking care of you during the school year while you're here, but that you need to find your brother." She looked at Sonic quizzically, who shrugged.
"Shadow ain't my brother, ma'am. We're cousins that happen to look alike. I dunno where he could be, but if you have a Park anywhere near the middle of the city, chances are he went there for the night. But since it's daylight, he could be anywhere."
Sonic was guessing everything as he spoke. He didn't know Shadow's habits, but figured that making like a bum and staying somewhere with trees for cover from rain would be a good thing for anyone without a place to stay to do.
Edward piped up. "You know, Edna and I could go with Sonic and Miss Corby to wherever she's gonna take him, then help him look for Shadow. Since he really doesn't know this town yet, it would be better for him to have people to help."
Edna put her two cents in as well. "Besides, we have friends here that could tell us if they've seen another hedgehog running around."
Edward and Edna's mother considered this, then nodded her head in agreement. "Fine. But be home by supper."
Edward rushed up the stairs, taking two at a time. Normally, being let out of the house like this was normal, especially on a Saturday, but for some reason he felt especially ecstatic today, like there was something special that was going to happen to him, and that he'd miss it if he didn't go.
Sonic followed behind, at his normal pace of light jog, in order to keep up with the fox boy. He needed to get a shower at some point, and hoped that this Miss Corbin or whatever her name was had some fresh clothes for him. If he had to keep himself covered, he could at least be comfortable, right?
Let's snap to Shadow, who woke up about the same time as Sonic, but in a not so comfy position. His back hurt from where he had fallen out of the tree, and thinking about this, as well as what had happened after he regained consciousness from falling a second time, made him wonder how he had ended up in the tree after all. He began to write off the sexual celebration as a vivid dream when he looked down to the base of the tree. There, piled neatly, were nine pairs of white panties.
Shadow hopped down from the tree and popped his back, then picked up the undergarments and stuffed them into the bushes, making sure they were hidden from view. He wanted to make sure that anyone passing by while he stretched didn't see them and come to some kind of perverted conclusion.
Judging by the height of the sun in the sky, Shadow guessed that it was about eight in the morning. He stretched out his body to allow for maximum mobility and looseness, popped his neck and his shoulders, and checked for his recovered Emerald. The Emerald was still there, which surprised him slightly, but he grabbed it and held it to his forehead, searching for another signal. He found none.
He guessed that maybe their forms hadn't fully stabilized in this realm yet, but it would only be a matter of time. If he played his cards right, he might be able to gather up all the Emeralds before Sonic realized it, and then he would be on his way back to Mobius, leaving Sonic trapped in this alternate reality forever.
Shadow dropped the gem into his pocket, then looked about him. He had no idea where to go from here, and his stomach growled. He was hungry, as he had not eaten since the morning before they got there.
Looking around for witnesses and finding none, Shadow took hold of the gem in his pocket and concentrated on it. He muttered, "Chaos Control!" and everything around him stopped. For the time being, he could walk about freely, and with time stopped the way it was, he was free to do as he pleased. He normally used this power as a way of escaping from enemies too big for him to take one alone, but now he was using to steal food.
He found a fast food restaurant near the park, and ran in, grabbing some of the freshly made cinnamon rolls that were cooling on the racks behind the counter and running out. The employees would never know who or what had made off with the food, and would eventually write off the disappearance as having not ever happened at all, and that they merely had forgotten to make some of the batch of breakfast pastries.
Shadow ran off as fast as he could towards some hidden place to eat the food, hoping that the Emerald's power was not affected here. He confirmed that it wasn't, because the Chaos Control's effect lasted the entire thirty minutes, same as it had any other time. This allowed Shadow time to eat his breakfast, as well as ponder other things about the Chaos Emeralds, including using his Super form.
By the time Shadow finished his breakfast and found a nearby stream to wash up in, Sonic and the fox cubs were leaving the house with Miss Corby. Sonic kept his eyes open, looking for any trace of the black and red hedgehog. The foxes did the same, thought the only description for Shadow that they had was ‘hedgehog.' Miss Corby, though, was oblivious, focused on maintaining and completing her task at hand.
