He could hear the beating of his own heart as it thumped rapidly against his chest. His other senses were dull and he could do nothing to sharpen them. Blurred vision, watery hearing, strained breath, and to top it off the cold feeling on his skin was discomforting. He couldn't remember who or where he was nor could he remember what had happened to get him to his present predicament. Through some sort of slotted visor he could see that he was in a vat. Outside droids and technicians worked heedless of his movements.
A flash took his vision and it all started coming back to him in a flood of feelings. Pain, suffering, loss, everything associated with the anger he felt in his chest. One word escaped the respirator attached to the mask across his face. "Nara."
**
"Father!" her voice called to him cheerfully through her bounding steps.
He watched her approach and knelt down on the forest floor, opening his arms wide with his smile equally broad. As she jumped up into his arms he hugged her tight and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Nara what are you doing out here?"
"Mother brought me here so I could say goodbye." She hopped down out of his grasp and looked up, her face a beaming bright smile. "Can't we come with you father?"
Eduarin could only feel love in his heart for her. The girl was a Twi'lek, she was a blue-skinned beauty coming of age. Though only cresting into her teens she looked every bit the woman. Long legs fitted with leather pants crafted from the hide of banthas native to their home on the second moon of Kashyyyk. She wore a light shirt and a brown leather vest of the same type of material. About her waist she wore a utility belt he had crafted for her, she had always been an explorer from the time she could walk so he figured it would be better to leave her prepared.
As she regarded him with her bright blue eyes and youthful smile he had a bit of regret about leaving. After a moment of thinking he sat down on one of the boxes he had been loading onto his ship. He looked down at his hands, wondering if he knew what he was doing. They were covered in the same fine fur that stretched from his head to his feet. His features were that of a wolf though his people lacked a tail and their muzzles had shortened over the long years since their birth. His garb was similar to hers, brown leather and simple clothing. The only difference was that he was wearing a blaster at his side as well. "Nara am I doing the right thing?"
"Daddy you know you don't need to ask that." Nara sat down next to him and put a hand on his, squeezing it lightly. "Mom would be mad if she knew you were having second thoughts, don't stay just because I'll miss you."
"How about if I'll miss you too?" He replied with a smile.
"Nah I don't think that's enough." She shook her head, her lekku danced playfully about her back and shoulders. "You're going to train as a Jedi dad. You're going to go be one of the good guys and protect people. That's important work; we'll come join you as soon as we can."
"I don't even know if the order will take me Nara." Eduarin, or as his friends call him ‘Ed'. "I just hope that Master Skywalker will accept me."
"If he doesn't he's a fool." Nara smiled and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. "Mom said she didn't want to say goodbye because that would mean she's acknowledging a loss. I think she's just going to miss you a whole lot."
"Well I should hope so." Ed smiled and pushed her out to arms length, regarding her beauty yet again. "You've grown into a beautiful woman right before my eyes Narada Astraal and by all rights I must tell you that I'm proud to be your father."
"I love you too daddy." Nara turned away from him and started away. "Now I should let you and mom have a few minutes. She should have changed her mind by now."
"You know I hate it when you do that." A soft, feminine voice called out to them from across the platform.
Eduarin watched Kestral approach and with each step she took his heart skipped a beat. She was wearing the outfit she was wearing when they had first met. It consisted of black thigh-high boots and a short skirt with a matching top. Her lekku were decorated with various tattoos and ties as always but her black-hued skin and the white ink were a stark contrast. "I couldn't let you leave without saying goodbye."
"I'm glad." Ed replied, taking the beautiful Twi'lek into his arms when she had come close enough. Their lips met for a brief moment and she pulled back, searching his face with her hard colored emerald eyes. "I can see there's no turning you around on this still."
"I have dreamed of being a Jedi since I was young. My people revere them, they have ever since Master Yoda saved us from the advances of the trade federation so many years ago. He named us as a force sensitive people, the ones we chose to be shamans were the most sensitive, and encouraged us to have some of our young trained as Jedi." He ran a hand across her face and smiled. "Since the fall of the Jedi Order we have been waiting for a chance to accept that invitation and now is the time. Among my people I am the most gifted in the ways of the force. My father was a shaman, and his father before him. I must go, it is my destiny. But that doesn't mean I'm not going to miss you every moment I'm gone."
"Isn't attachment something against the Jedi rules or something?" She blushed slightly, her face flushing a dark red.
"Jedi are encouraged to be compassionate my dear, so what would we be like if we weren't able to love as well?" He pulled her close again and locked lips with her in a passionate embrace. They held it for a long time before he pulled away from her. "There's nothing that could keep me from loving you."
**
Pain lanced through his body stealing him away from the pleasant memories. A sharp stabbing sensation invaded the side of his head and he tried to lash out but found his limbs unable to move. A tendril of red floated past his eyes and caused him to cry out in anger, lashing around in the tank through his restraints. A raw cry of anger escaped his throat, distorted through the mask and the apparatus still clinging to him. "Nara!"
"He's resisting the treatment sir, his will is strong." One droid said to a figure shrouded in a dark robe from head to toe.
"Increase the power and try again." The unidentified person ordered in a crass, uncaring manner.
"Increasing the power could potentially kill him." The droid quipped, looking back at the tank. "Authorization is required."
"Authorized, code twenty-three bravo." A long feminine arm stretched out from the folds of the robe revealing a pink-skinned being underneath the shadow of the hood. "Proceed."
"Yes ma'am."
His vision blurred again and he felt a jolt of electricity hit the tank. With every muscle in his body going through spasms uncontrollably he couldn't find the energy to right himself and resist. Blackness took him again and yet another memory was pried from his mind.
**
"Nara what are you doing here? If your mother finds out you've stowed away with me she'll have my head!" Eduarin yelled, having found his adopted daughter hiding among his stores for the journey. He was already half way to Yavin IV so turning around would not be an option. "You've really done it this time."
"Please don't be angry with me father, I wanted to come with you and be a Jedi too. I knew mom wouldn't agree to it even though you would so I decided to take action and come with you. I was hoping you wouldn't notice until we got there." She looked down at the deck of the ship away from his angry eyes. "You're not going to turn around are you?"
"No, we're too far along now." He sighed and ran a hand over his head and across his tall ears. "I have no choice but to let you come with me but my dear it's not so simple to be a Jedi. It's a hard life and quite honestly I don't know if you're even cut out for it."
Seeing her look of disappointment he instantly regretted that statement. Crossing his arms over his chest he sighed and was silent for a long time. Gently he put a hand under her chin and lifted her gaze up so she could see his eyes. "You are a gifted young girl; I didn't want this kind of life for you."
"My life is my own father, and my decisions, though inaccurate from time to time, are my own to make and learn from. There is no better way to know than to try." She shrugged lightly and met his gaze easily. She always found it comforting to look into his eyes, there was a certain measure of peace there that she had never seen elsewhere. "I'm sorry I deceived you."
"Don't worry about it, but next time could you just come out and tell us instead of just taking action? That's not always the best course." He was trying to chastise her without being harsh; it was hard to be mean to the wonderful young woman. She had been by his side since she had been born. Her mother had been pregnant when he had purchased her from a slaver. Eduarin had subsequently set her free and offered help her get off world. The startled Twi'lek had opted to stay to repay his generosity and slowly but surely they had fallen in love. Nara had been born not long after they had been married and he had treated the girl as his own daughter ever since. "It's hard to be mad at you, you know that right?"
Nara smiled wide and giggled at him. "Yeah, that's why you let me get away with so much."
**
The thoughts of his daughter, his beloved Nara pulled him away again and with a renewed rage he clenched his fists tight. The move surprised him and he realized he had control of his limbs again. A wicked smile crossed his features and he began gathering energy within himself.
"Tranquilizers quickly! Fools!" The hooded woman cried suddenly, her eyes going wide. As if she knew it wouldn't work she ran out of the room as quickly as she could leaving the door to slide closed behind her.
Using every bit of the power within himself he spread his arms wide and lashed out around him. The glass of the bacta tank shattered and he was thrown from the recesses into the room. It took a moment for him to regain his senses and by then he was faced with several droids holding needles and prods of some sort. Something felt amiss, he felt as if he should have something in his hand to lash out at these impudent droids. Clasping his hand into a fist he flung it out to the side and knocked all of the droids down as if they were dominos.
Having that emptiness in his hands was hard for him so he reached down and grabbed two of the electrified stun rods to supplicate his need to destroy. He screamed again, it was feral but hindered by the apparatus still on his face. With one shaking hand he felt his face, neck and torso. His head was covered by a leather mask of some sort that was connected to the front of the mask and a visor. Stretching down from there was a series of tubes running down his back and into his spine. His chest was covered by some sort of metallic plate armor that seemed to be protecting the tubes and simultaneously protecting his chest. He had a series of metal ‘ribs' resting across his chest as well.
It seemed his arms and legs were free to move about and he recognized the leather vest and the pants he wore as his clothing but looking down at himself he saw more metal than flesh and fur. In his rage he lashed out using the force sending a rippling wave of energy into the door in front of him, blowing it out of the groove and across the hallway to slam into the far wall. "Nara! Where are you?"
A startled man wearing an imperial uniform was standing not far from him. Before the man could free he reached out with his hand, closing his fingers lightly he lifted the startled doctor from the ground a few feet. "Where is Nara?!"
"Nara lord?" The man choked out between gasps. "I know no Nara!"
"Lord?" He echoed lightly, dropping the struggling man to the ground with a motion. His voice was but a whisper. "Who am I?"
"My lord?"
"Answer me!" He yelled, pounding his foot against the ground he sent a ripple of energy across the floor pushing the man back and sending various parts and pieces scattering about. "Who am I?"
"Darth Serratus!" The startled doctor yelled as he scrambled to his feet and ran down the hallway as fast as his legs could carry him.
"What?" The startled Lupin fell to his knees and pounded the ground with both fists until they began to bleed and another flash overcame him.
**
"I don't understand Master Skywalker, Nara is my daughter you must allow me to go!" Eduarin put his face into his hands and continued to plead through his despair. "She's just a girl!"
"We will do what we can Eduarin but you're too connected to this. Your grief, your emotions they'll cloud your judgment. I cannot allow you to go, I want you to stay here we'll find her." Luke turned away from Eduarin who scowled at his back as he left.
His memories became jumbled and unclear at this point, he remembered leaving the temple against his master's wishes and traveling to the planet she had been visiting. In his anger he slew every person in the imperial base until one man; the commander in charge had told him where to find his daughter. Subsequently he had killed the unfortunate man.
**
"Nara." His voice was a hoarse whisper. Gathering his wits about him he stood up and cast the two stun batons aside and walked back into the room. He looked around for a moment then spied what he was looking for. Reaching out with the force he pulled his two light sabers toward his hands and activated both of them, staring at the red-hued glow of them for a moment before stalking out of the room.
He picked a corridor, not caring where it took him. The hum of his weapons echoed throughout the metallic halls. The first thing he wanted to do is find a ship and get away from them, all of them. Again his mind flashed and he was rocked to his knees with images of pain and torture, mainly his own. He had given himself in exchange for her release much to her displeasure. He had watched her ship pull away from the facility he had assaulted on his own and then surrendered soon after. A lithe and beautiful woman was all he remembered; she had soft white skin and dark eyes with a mane of wild red hair and green eyes. She was always shrouded in darkness; her name was etched into his mind. "Darth Lyshyyk, my master no longer. You will pay for what you did to Nara and I."
His memories were flooding back to him as the apparatus hooked to his body kept him alive. He'd attempted to kill the Sith, betraying his word and attacking her when she was at her pinnacle of gloating. She'd brought him to the brink of death for his insolence but she had known what he was going to do before he did it. Instead of killing him she'd kept him alive and rebuilt his body, she'd attempted to overwrite his memories with her own set of instructions, an experiment carried over from some Sith Lord she revered. The experiment was a failure obviously; his mind was too strong for her probes and brainwashing techniques.
Each step brought him a little closer to full lucidity. His past, the edicts of his people especially, hit him hard. He had betrayed them. Eduarin was to be their champion the first Jedi among their people. Now he was broken and hollow inside, missing something. He was too distracted to notice the form coming up behind him until the last second. Ed swung around quickly and caught his would-be master's lightsaber between his twin blades. He snarled and reached down inside of himself, letting loose a ripple of energy in front of him.
She flew backward and slammed into the wall, not expecting a response so strong. His movements were impossibly fast as he closed the distance and swept his left then his right blade across a now empty expanse of air. All he could see was red; the glow of his weapons and the hate festering in his heart lent him a strength he had never known before. Turning around to face the woman that would have enslaved him he focused every ounce of detestation on her all at once. The metallic plates in the floor around her bent downward and she was forced to her knees fighting hard against the crushing weight he was forcing down upon her. "I'll feast upon your entrails."
"What would your precious daughter say to you now?" She strained against him trying not to be overwhelmed by the immense power he was wielding. "Your hatred has made you strong! Do it! Destroy me now and throw away the last of your humanity!"
He knew her ploy and unfortunately it had worked. Astounded at his own behavior he released her and ran, his legs pumping furiously to gain distance between the vile tormentor he knew was right. He deactivated his weapons and hung them at his belt, ducking into a side hangar bay praying to whoever might be listening that a ship of some sort would be inside. It was sheer luck that he had picked a full hangar, it was a short order to leave the place behind him and set a course for the first place he knew his daughter would go. The coordinates for the Jedi Temple on Yavin 4 were hard for him to program but he did so never the less. "Nara."
**
"You're certain of this my child?" The old Lupin asked the wavering hologram projected before him. He had addressed young Nara many times before and he knew in his heart that she was not lying to him. His heart was breaking even as she relayed the story in full of how his eldest son had given his life in exchange for hers. "His sacrifice will never be forgotten little one. I must go meditate on this information."
As she disappeared tears slid down his cheeks and he howled long and low, trying as hard as he could not to let his sorrow eat him from the inside. Its claws were sharp and its bite fierce even through the great resolve he had built up over the years. Deep down inside he could feel his son's presence though he dismissed it as the hope of a helpless old man.
