"And When we Beseech thee, Almighty Goddess, you sent your Angels, armed with The Fire of The Stars, unto Us!"

  • Cant of Thanks, Upon seeing a Fighter-Squadron of Dragons.

Vandal trudged on, helping any of his Brothers and Sisters to their feet, handing them their weapons and urging them to fall back to the city, while he questioned them where his love was. Many had pointed him farther onto the bridge. Slowly he made his way across, finding less and less Evolutionaries alive. He rolled many of the charred, smaller bodies, fearing he had failed his beloved.

An Elephant roared in agony as an Adepta Hander whipped it to its feet, visibly angered at the failure of the massive beast to follow a simple command. The Wolf approached the Fox, who was now growling low in frustration. Vandal grabbed the Fox's arm, who snarled and almost bit at him. He relented realizing who had interrupted his lashing, but only looked at him in contempt.

"You dare touch an Adept?" the Fox hissed. "No, I'm stopping an animal abuser, and if he continues to speak, I'll rend his speech by ripping his tongue out." The Fox relented and took back his arm, stepping away as Vandal moved to and petted the living gun platform, working his way to the front. There, he whispered sweetly to the Elephant, who let out a low cry and trumpet, slowly and softly standing up. Splinters of wood where logged all along its front left leg, which quivered visibly.

Vandal took his bayonet and began to, as softly and gently as he could, pull the splinters out. The Elephant cried every now and then at each tug, but was faring better than if the Fox had done so, who simply watched on in silence. The Wolf was no Adepta Medikind, but it's nothing a simple removal, cleaning and searing shut the wounds, which were going to be a problem.

The Wolf turned to the Fox and saw a stun baton on his belt. He reached for it and removed it himself, the Fox clearly taken back by the blatant violation of his personal space. Vandal could care less, and grabbed a piece of steel that had snapped off somewhere. He wrapped one end is some cloth, tearing it from his uniform, and made sure there was no metal, only on wood beneath him, and switched on the baton. He quickly tapped the two ends together, sparks flying and a tingling sensation traveling up his arm, but it did the job, the steel rod turning a soft orange.

He readied himself to move, the Fox seeing this and took a few steps back, and placed the burning tip against flesh. The Elephant roared and reared, the Wolf stepping back to clear the feet. Once it settled down again, he continued sealing the wounds. The Elephant seemed to quickly fight the pain, its leg now sealed properly.

Vandal placed his paw against the wounds and whispered a small prayer of Healing, the Fox looking visibly bothered by the act. "You prey to heathens? There is only Darwin and the Adepta Biotechnologists! I'll see you-" The Fox crumpled in pain as the Wolf slammed the butt end of the baton into the irritating Fox's muzzle.

"First you abuse an injured animal, then proceed to insult and threaten a JTF4 agent for his personal decisions? I am not only your superior but also clearly more humane, than you could ever be! And it's just not about Darwin and the Adepta Casts! It's about being one with Nature, and caring for all of the beloved creatures Mother Nature has graced us with!"

The Fox had a bleeding nose and was about to retort, had not the Elephant reared. A missile streaked across the bridge, slamming into a beam next to the startled animal.

"Where's the drivers?" shouted the Wolf. "Dead in the river! They were thrown from the beast from the Whirlwinds!" Vandal growled low and grabbed onto the rope ladder on the Elephant, clambering into the metal harness. The Fox followed behind, knowing not what to do, and stood at attention. "Do you at least know how to drive or fire?"

"I am an Adepta Hander! You dare-"

"I COULD CARE LESS WHO YOU ARE! DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DRIVE OR FIRE?!" The Wolf yelled in frustration, not realizing he had drawn his carbine on the Fox, who starred before making for the reins. The Wolf slowly lowered his weapon and made it to the guns, hauling solid magnetic slugs into both barrels and drawing close the blast chambers.

The Fox managed to rein in the Elephant and angled the creature that both guns, linked together with a firing reticle, where pointed at the regrouped Clunkers. "Panzermann, dead ahead!" shouted the Fox, lining up the sights with the metallic monster on the other bank.

"Firing!" Shouted Vandal, and pulled the firing cords. A great boom echoed as the gas inside the chamber ignited and propelled the slug, plasma coating the surface in a blinding light of twin sun. They left a streak of burned particulates and ignited elements behind them as they travelled to the hated target.

The Panzermann let out a scream of metal against metal as his chest armor superheated and melted, smashed in and his body shattered and ignited as the suns hit their mark. The Wolf howled in success and began loading slugs into the venting guns.

A Tiger and Lion had clambered up into the carriage, the Fox startled and had almost wipped the Lion. "Sir!" they saluted, "We can take over! It'll be faster with two gunners."

"Thank you! I'm looking for someone, Private Dion, a half Neko."

The Lion looked over his shoulder, thinking for a moment. "I think I saw one over by the over-turned tanker..."

"But the Clunkers where advancing on us before we could extract her..." finished the Tiger.

Vandal shot right the front of the carriage and peered over, seeing a smoldering tanker farther up. "Cover me!" is all he said before running to the side and leaping down. The trio simply watched as the Wolf hurried into a sprint. Suddenly, rounds filled the air as the Clunkernaughts made another push for the bridge, more Panzermanns having slogged their way across the city. Quickly, Lion and Tiger began loading and firing the guns as the Fox spat out verbal encouragement.

The Wolf made a fast dash, occasional rounds landing near him as some saw to take cheap shots. He easily found cover on the ruined bridge, still littered with overturn vehicles and spilled war material. Much he could not use, do to the fact they required augments to safely use without having a limb ripped off from the recoil. The Wolf also made the realization that he was quickly running out of gas and caps.

Plasmid and solid rounds began to fill the air, missiles and slugs exchanged in kind as the two sides fought with renewed vigor. But it was not Vandal's turn to join the fray, not yet, not until he is sure to unleash the death dealer within, and joining his beloved beyond.

So close now, he was sure he could smell her scent upon the burning air. Closer he came to the tanker, yes, he saw there upon the ground, a small form, curled up and shaking... No...

He was a few steps away now, he reached out. She had slowly turned to see who was approaching and-

A Fuel-to-Air rocket exploded above them, throwing the Wolf upon the Neko!

She squirmed and hissed, ready to lash out in utter primal might, before stopping completely, and throwing her face into his chest, sobbing uncontrollably. The Wolf leaned on one arm as he shook his head clear of the ringing noise in his ears, then smiling down to his beloved, stroking back her small brown ears and ragged black hair.

She looked up to him through tear drenched eyes as she made to kiss him, trembling as he slipped his free arm under her. They shared this embrace as the world and the vicious war disappeared around them. They shared this moment for what felt like eternity crashing down upon them. Vandal broke the kiss and nipped at her neck, inhaling her scent as he moved down her shoulders, planting kisses of affection along her arm, until he reached her hand. He held it softly in his as he kissed and nipped every fingertip, making her squirm and giggle in affection every show of love along her tender soft skin.

As soon as they had found each other, the war found them once again. High-pitch whistling filled the air as fighter-planes swooped in from the east. "Fuck! They're going to bomb the bridge! Move!" shouted Vandal, who jumped to his feet. Dion had rolled onto her front, but

was picked up by the Wolf by her waist, and flung her over his shoulder. She hissed at being man-handled, and then covered her ears as she saw a Rhino fire both of its rifles. The high pitch whine of exiting slugs streaked through the air. Vandal had turned, allowing Dion to watch as the slugs made their way to the Clukernaughts. They slammed into another reinforcing Panzermann, burning straight through his armored chaise, fluids and parts left spilled out on exit. Clunkers and Germans moved in to fill the gap in the line, firing wildly as they began a slow advance.

Vandal patted Dion's butt and wrapped his arm tight around her torso. "Hold on tight!" With that, he began his sprint to back to Evolutionary lines, jumping charred remains and fallen beams, gaps in the road and bullet ridden bodies.

Dion did as she was told, covering her ears and shut her eyes tight, trying to block out the horrid war. She would peek out, only to see her vision filled with a smoky sky and metallic monstrosities moving in. She heard the buzzing of the engines, the bomber moving into position to drop its payload. She made to scream, to let her Wolf know of the coming treat.

But no, she instead screamed as she was thrown from the shoulder of her beloved, rolling across the rough wood and stopping within a burned out tanker. She crawled, dazed and confused, her ears ringing and vision blurred, as she looked for Vandal. She saw a paw holding tight to metal rebar, dangling over the raging river below.

Scrambling over, she grab his wrist with both hands, tears welling in her eyes as she struggled to help him up. "Vandal! Vandal! Come on my love! Pull yourself up!" He looked up, dazed and staring in bewilderment. He made to reach for the planks and concrete, when another bomb exploded overhead. Dion was forced onto her front and ground into the road, losing her grip on Vandal. He was forced into the river, silently, but with a look of despair, her paw gripping hopelessly for his love who was receding from him.

She screamed. She screamed as she never had before. Tears streamed from her eyes as she watched him fall.
