A Dragon's Tale-Chapter 37-Broken Steel
#37 of A Dragon's Tale
The year is 1999. Retried Marines John Alex Mason, friend Hudson James Weaver and brother Issac Tyler Mason, have stepped back into the Corps to rescue their fellow Marine and brother in arms Wyatt Nolan Clarke. The friends are overjoyed to get the team back together. Little do they know that this is 30 year old John's last mission.....as a human anyway....
St L'o,France 3:25 PM 4/29/1943 Firebase Delta Jack's POV
American and British fighters flew over the camp as Alex and I relaxed in the Jeep. It was hotter than hell,so everyone was just taking it easy.
"Why?" Alex asked looking at me,"why is it so freaking hot?"
"Don't ask me,I replied throwing off my shirt,"i don't control the weather."
Alex was a skinny,113 pound fourteen year old,but you'd never guess do to his massive six three hight. He stood a full inch taller than me and his blue eyes and short hair perfectly suited his skinny frame.
I was fifteen and was around six feet. I had short spiky black hair and and green eyes, which were covered by sunglasses because I always hated bright light.
"Hey Perez",Hayes called.
"Yeah?" I called from the jeep.
"Come over here for a minute."
I pulled myself from the jeep and went over to my friend. He was a massive,6'11 beast of a man with huge biceps the size of a Comp-B demolition charges, and could do almost as much damage with them as he could with any rifle.
"What you need sir?" I asked.
"I got five bucks that says you can't hit those four helmets all in a row."
"Oh yeah?" I replied smirking,"I've got a fifty in my wallet that says I hit them all."
Hayes smiled. "All right private",he said throwing a fifty on the crate next to his M1 carbine,"fifty bucks."
I went back to the jeep and retrieved my M1 carbine from the backseat.
"It's not to late to back out",Hayes said as I stepped up to the firing line.
"In your dreams Hayes",I said taking aim and sending a helmet flying.
"Good shot",Hayes said,"but don't get cocky,there's still three more."
I sighted in another helmet and let the bullet fly, sending the helmet to the ground, quickly repeating myself on the other two helmets. I turned and looked at Hayes, gripping my rifle by it's stock.
"I believe I just made fifty greenbacks,I said smirking and taking the money.
"Alright private,Hayes said opening a box of grenades,"if your such a good shot, fifty more bucks says you can't throw this grenade through that window."
"Deal,I said throwing down a bill.
I picked up the grenade and pulled the pin, pulling back my arm to arc the throw. After a second,I tossed it. The frag flew right through the window and exploded, caving the house in around it.
"Anymore challenges sir?" I asked smiling.
"That will be all private",Hayes said smiling,"dismissed."
I walked back to the jeep. Alex was lazily reclined with his feet up on the dash and his head draped over the back of the seat.
"So how much money did you make?" He asked with out opening his eyes.
"Hundred",I replied.
"Pff,Alex huffed,"when will he learn that making a bet with you always equals loss of funds?"
"Hopefully never,I replied picking my up from the dash and wiping the sweat from my chest and back. I pulled a clean, cool, dry shirt from my ruck and pulled it on before getting back into the jeep. I placed my Carbine on the dash and reclined with my feet up on the dash, like Alex was doing. Even through closed eyes and sunglasses,it was still bright enough to hurt my eyes.
"Jack,Alex,"David's voice called from the tent,"grab your gear and get into the truck, our unit's being moved."
Alex groaned as we puled ourselves from the jeep. I grabbed my rifle and walked around to the back of the jeep. Alex grabbed his Springfield 1903 from the back along with his kit and walked to the truck. I grabbed my kit and threw it over my sholuder's along with my carbine, tightening the straps as i walked to the truck. Alex and I climbed into the back of the truck, closely followed by David,Thomas,Ingram and Hayes. A Sargent then walked around to the back of the truck.
"I'm McCullin",he said sternly,"Two Rules,Rule one, your no good to me dead. Rule two,Ah what difference does it make? You'll all probably end up dead anyway."
He got off the truck and disappeared around the corner.
"Well that was inspiring."Alex cracked as the truck lurched forward.
"You want inspiration Alex?" Hayes asked,"read a poem." Sarge is ten times the soldier you'll ever be."
"Listen up",Hayes said continuing,"were on a secret mission to get coffee and doughnuts, the bad news is that the German's drank all the coffee and ate all the doughnuts,so now we have to go kick their asses."
"Or we could just stay back at base and eat all those french rolls they got",Alex replied.
"Were being tasked to provide support for the 52nd Armored Division." "We'll be coming in from the west flank, and guys? "Remember rule number one."
The back of the truck fell silent as we began to run through our equipment, making sure we had everything. Thirty seconds into this, the smell of death and rotting flesh assailed us.
"Oh god",I said gagging and pulling my scarf over my face to try and rid my nose of the horrid odor.
"Ah".Thomas said smiling,"I love that smell, smells just like home."
"Your a freak Thomas",Ingram said shoving him away.
As we rode along, more and more Sherman tanks and American men began to run behind us,the sound of gunfire growing louder with each passing second.
"Damn",Alex said sticking the bolt back in his Springfield,"the German's are this far out?" "I thought the 52nd had this area?"
"Open your eyes Alex,"Hayes said,"It's been like this for weeks."
"Hey wait up!!!"
I glanced over Ingram's shoulder to see Private Tyler running behind the truck.
"What the hell are you doing down there?" Thomas asked.
"Tell the driver to slow down!",David barked.
"Hustle up private!"Ingram said laughing.
"Come on Ingram, this isn't funny!" Tyler yelled as he ran behind the truck.
"Take my hand and I'll pull you in,David said reaching out.
Tyler reached out,but he was a few inches short still.
"Stop messing around and reach",Ingram said.
Tyler reached out again, but was still short.
"Quit screwing around",Ingram said again,'reach for my freaking hand!"
As Ingram reached for Tyler's hand,a high pitched whistle filled the air. The truck was suddenly rocked by an explosion, sending Tyler flying and all of us to our backs. The truck began to pick up speed and violently lurch from side to side as the drive tried to avoid the German mortars that were now falling like a heavy rain. I felt a shock wave hit me like a wall of air as the truck was thrown to it's side. My vision went grey and blurry,I couldn't make out much. As my vision cleared up,Alex and another guy took hold of me and began to drag me. Gunfire rang out and the other man was hit in the face, killing him instantly. Alex dropped me by a wall and I had a chance to take in my surroundings. The truck was laying in flaming pieces in a large mortar crater.
"Is everyone okay?" Hayes asked.
"I'm fine",I replied.
"Me too,Alex called back.
"Uninjured"Ingram called. "David?"
"I'm fine,dazed,but fine."
"Where's Thomas?" Hayes called.
"Thomas?" Ingram called. "THOMAS!" Ingram shouted running to the truck.
Thomas was pinned underneath the truck with a large spike stuck in his chest, coughing and spiting up blood.
"MEDIC!" Ingram called,"we need a medic now!"
I ran over to them, grabbing my rifle off the ground as I did. I knelt beside Thomas and began to inspect his wounds. Both his legs had been completely crushed, even if we somehow managed to free him from underneath the truck, there was no way he was walking. The spike, which I now discovered was the trucks tail pipe had entered at his waist, but came out at his chest, telling me that it had either entered at a slant or somehow twisted inside him.
"This is going to ruin my whole day",Thomas rasped coughing up even more blood.
"Don't die on me Thomas",Ingram said crying, don't you dare die on me!"
"Come on Ingram",Thomas rasped smiling,"we all know I'm not going anywhere."
"Don't you even THINK of giving up on me!" Ingram shouted shaking Thomas's body,"you are going to get out of this and you are going to go home to your daughter!"
"Not this time my friend,I'll see you,Thomas rasped,"on the other side."
Thomas let out a long sigh, and passed.
"NO!" Ingram shouted violently shaking Thomas's body,"NO,no,NO,NO!"
"He's gone Ingram!" Alex said putting his hand on his shoulder.
"Get off me!" Ingram shouted shoving Alex away. Ingram knelt down beside Thomas, took his dog tags and hung them around his neck.
"Hey!",McCullin called,"Over here!"
We quickly took up our weapons and went over to the sarge, who was crouched with two other guys behind the brick wall.
"What unit you with private?"McCullin asked looking me over.
"Private first class Jack Perez",I replied. This is Specialist Ingram Scott,Hayes Holland and David Conrad." "were with the 40th ID,first squad. Our C.O bought it back in Martinville."
"All right",McCullin said,"then your with us."
"You"the sarge said pointing to the medic,"stay with Santos."
"No,your with me now."
"That's an order private!"
"Sargent!"The medic yelled.
"End of discussion private!",McCullin yelled back.
"Perez",McCullin said turning back to me,"take your team and go back stop our armor."
"Sir yes sir,I replied.
"The rest of you-including you,McCullin said pointing to Alex,who had a fearful look,"are with me,up and over,MOVE!"
McCullin began to boost us over the wall, first David, then Ingram,Hayes and Alex, followed by me. As I poked my head over the wall,a mortar went off, kicking up dirt and a few bodies. My instincts took over, causing me to duck back behind the wall for a few seconds.
"Up and over Private!" McCullin yelled.
I pulled myself over the wall and quickly drew my Carbine as I ran for a destroyed tomb. MG-42s began to ring out from the church, causing me to instantly duck for cover.
"MG-42's!",David yelled,"HIT THE DIRT!"
"Get suppressing fire on those forty twos!" Ingram yelled.
The bullets from the German machine guns were falling on us like a rain from hell. From the amount of noise and bullet impacts,I guessed there were at least three, trying to cross to the church would be a suicide run. The sound of Alex's Springfield was welcoming.
"Put some fire on those machine guns!" I yelled sighting one in and letting off a round, the machine gun I'd targeted fell silent.
"Got one!" I yelled.
Alex's Springfield went off again, another machine gun fell silent.
"Got the bastard!" Alex yelled.
I sighted in the last machine gun and let off another round,I heard the .30 caliber round strike the top of the barrel, the machine gun stopped for a few seconds, but then burst right back out.
"Ahh",I angrily whispered to myself taking aim again,"no dice."
I let off another round, the machine gun fell silent.
"42's down"I yelled.
With the machine guns down,I turned my attention to the soldier's ducked behind the sandbags. As they broke form cover to fire,I sighted them in and let off my rounds as fast as I could. I was reaching into my kit for another magazine when I heard Alex's Springfield crack again.
"Clear left"Alex called.
"Clear right!" I called.
"Clear" Ingram called.
"Zero!" Ingram called. Move to the church!"
McCullin called. I stuck the fresh magazine into my rifle and clanked the chamber closed as I ran for the church.
"German's behind the rubble!" Hayes yelled as an MP-40 cracked off a few rounds, striking the wall just to my left.
I quickly ducked behind the wall and trained my rifle in the direction that I'd heard the sound. Sure enough,I could see just the top of a German helmet. I brought my rifle to my shoulder and cracked off a round. It ripped through the man's helmet and sent him to the ground,he didn't get back up.
"Good shot Jack",Ingram called,"let's move!"
I took point as we crawled below a fallen support beam. As we did,the unmistakable sound of a Panzer rolling on the cobblestone road priced my skull. It was like being asked to sign my own death warrant.
"Freaking Panzer",I said fearfully.
The sound grew louder, louder and louder still, until it's back end was coming from behind the rubble.
"Nobody move",Ingram whispered.
I felt myself stop breathing as the Panzer began a slow, death crawl along the road above us. Two seconds later, the sound of a shell slamming into the tank rang in my ears and the Panzer went up in smoke. Four Sherman M4A1s then appeared from behind the rubble, closely followed by around fifteen other guys.
"Damn 52nd",Alex stated,"'bout freaking time."
"Move,I said standing and sprinting from the trench.
As I turned the corner,an MG-42 let rip and we quickly recoiled behind the wall. I picked up a piece of broken glass and held it around the corner,to see a Tiger perched on the top of the rubble.
"Oh wonderful",I said,"don't they ever run out?"
Two loud cannon shots quickly rang out and the Tiger went up in smoke.
"Oh hell yeah!" Ingram said smiling,"fireworks and it's not even the fourth of July!"
We sprinted from the church and over pipe to a destroyed building. As we entered, the sounds of German caused us to quickly recoil back out the door. I pulled a grenade from my kit and pulled the pin, letting the safety fall to the ground.
"Three,two",I said before chucking it.
"Grenadian!" The German solider yelled as it went off.
There was screaming, and more shouting in German. I couldn't make any of it out,my German was too rusty.
"Your going home in a coffin you Nazi bastards!" Ingram yelled as he stood in the doorway and let his Tommy gun rip.
"Move",he said after changing his magazine.
We moved through the house and came on a barricade.
"Damn",Ingram said,"no way in hell were going past this."
"Perez",McCullin said turning to me,"your on point, take this house."
Raising my rifle to a ready to fire position,I slowly entered the house, checking every angle and corner. As I walked through the doorway,I heard a scream, and turned just in time to have a Mauser 98 collide with the side of my head, sending me to the ground and my rifle flying. I tried to reach for it,but I was too slow. Unarmed,I turned to face my attacker. He attempted to slam his rifle longways onto my neck,in an attempt to break it,but I caught it and began to push back up. The German had an evil look on his face as he attempted to break my neck. He couldn't see my eyes through my sunglasses, but I'm sure that if he could,he'd be smiling. I had a look of fear on my face,I was fighting for my life, and losing the battle. As he slowly pushed his rife down on me,my friends faces flashed in front of my eyes. I thought of my Mom,Dad,little brother, and girlfriend I had waiting back home. I decided, not today." With a surge of strength,I began to push up.
"Not today you Nazi son of a bitch",I said angrily,"NOT TODAY!!"
The German's eyes went from anger to fear as i pushed his rifle back into him.
"I'm going to kill you!" I shouted bashing the rifle into his face, sending him reeling and giving me enough time to stand up. He charged me with another scream, and once again tried to break my neck with the rifle,I shoved back, pushing him against the wall as the look of fear grew more intense as I bashed him with the rifle again. As he reeled,I quickly slammed the weapon into his head, crushing it like a grape. His body slumped to the floor. I began to inspect the rifle.
"Not actually a bad weapon",I said placing it on my back and taking up my Carbine.
"Nazi son of a bitch",Ingram muttered,"good work Jack".
"What's that tank doing just sitting there?",McCullin asked agnerly as we came to a stop infront of a large hole in the wall.
"Taking cover if it has any sense",David said.
"Perez",McCullin barked at Alex,"get on that tank and tell the driver you can spot target's for him."
"Why me?" Alex asked fearfully.
"You a radio op aren't you? I'mm not asking private,I'm ordering."
"Private",McCullin said turning to me,"spot targets for your brother".
"Yes sir." I said climbing on to the back of the tank with Alex.
"You pick out targets",Alex said giving me a pair of binoculars,"and I'll call them out."
"Sound's good to me!" I shouted as the tank lurched forward.
The Sherman plowed through a few barricades and came to a stop in the square, the sounds of MG-42's rang out, causing Alex and I to drop our heads. I brought up the binoculars, spotting a 42 in a building on our left.
"There!" I said pointing to the building.
"Left corner building,70 meters,German squad, second floor." Alex called into his radio.
There was a loud hum as the tank began to turn it's turret in the direction of the building, and a loud BANG ans the cannon fired, collapsing the building in on itself.
"There's still more guns out there!" I said pointing to another machine gun.
"Kraut machine gun",Alex called,"75 metres, top floor, three story house on the right."
The Sherman turned it's gun on the house and let off a second round, sending the house into an inferno.
"Nice shootin solider",Alex said,"they ain't getting up!"
"There's heavy weapons still out there!" I said pointing to a third machine gun.
"MG42",Alex called,"60 meters,right corner building ground floor."
The tank let off a third round, silencing the machine gun permanently.
"Intersection looks clear",Alex called,"keep moving and well keep an eye out."
The tank once again lurched forward as Alex and I began taking shots at the German's,dropping as many as we could.
"More Machine guns",Alex said.
I brought up my binoculars, spotting a dual 42 emplacement. I tapped Alex's shoulder and pointed.
"Kraut machine guns",Alex called,"70 meters, top floor, three story house on the right."
The tank let off the round, destroying the emplacement.
"Good shot",I said,"there done!"
"PANZER! I screamed slapping Alex's shoulder and pointing at the tank.
"Ahh crap"Alex called,"we got a Panzer on the right,40 meters!"
The tank turned it's gun,and clipped off the top of the Panzer as the other four Sherman's from the 52nd joined us.
"Welcome to the party guys",Alex said smiling,"the 52ndis moving up!"
A quiet fell over the area, the only ting that could be heard was the sound of tank tracks and engines. Right out of nowhere,a mortar went off three feet in front of us. Alex and I were only sparred death because the tank absorbed the bulk of the force.
"Mortar's in coming",I screamed,"we have to get off this road!" Next thing I knew,I was on my back,my vision blurry. After a few seconds,I was able to stand and what I saw horrified me. David as crouched over, blood pouring from underneath his vest.
He laughed,"This is one hell of a birthday present."
I lay him against the wall and ripped his vest open. About twenty rounds traced down his chest, there was no way any of his organs' had been spared. McCullin,Ingram and Alex came through the hole in the wall.
"MEDIC",Ingram shouted,"WE NEED A MEDIC NOW!"
"Won't do any good",David said coughing and spiting up a bit of blood,"i'm hurt to badly."
"I'm a dead man,and we all know it."
Reality began to set in.
"Take care of each other." David said taking my hand in his grasp. The extent of his blood loss began to come clear as the color drained from his face.
"You asshole",Ingram said.
"See you on the other side brother",David said laughing and closing his eyes.
His grip loosened and he passed. I quickly yanked his tags from his neck, finding not one,but two sets.
"Why the hell would he.." "No",I whispered as I discovered my father's tags on the chain.
"He wanted to tell you boys,"Ingram said placing a hand on my shoulder,"but he couldn't bring himself to do it."
"Did he go out like a soldier?"I asked staring at the tags.
Ingram didn't answer. I hung the tags around my neck.
"Let's get the hell out of here before we lose someone else."
We ducked out of a hole in the back were greeted by no fewer than thirty German soldiers. I ducked behind a destroyed wall and began to drop the enemy fighters as fast as I could sight and pull the trigger. Slowly, but surely,we pushed froward.
"There!",I shouted,"get to that cafe!"
We sprinted to the door and stacked up beside it.
"Drop it Ingram!",I commanded. Ingram walked to the front of the door and began to kick it,Once, twice, three times. A hail of bullets ripped through the door and into Ingram. He dropped his rifle into the dirt and stumbled backwards as the bullets ripped through him and chunks of flesh went flying from his back. He fell to his back, coughing as his blood pooled under him.
"NOOO",I shouted,"NOT YOU TOO!"
I quickly grabbed Ingram by his web gear and pulled him away from the door. I lifted his head up of the ground and began to assess the damage. No fewer than a hundred rounds had ripped through his chest. There were two, gaping holes in his throat. The only thing keeping his left arm on his body was his shirt. I began to cry as Ingram took my hand in his grasp. His eyes were begging for help as he choked on his own blood.
"See.."Ingram rasped,"y." He died before he could finish his sentence.
"Somebody put a grenade in that house!" I shouted.
"With pleasure!" Alex shouted as he pulled a grenade form his kit, cooked it and tossed it in. The explosion came just seconds later. We entered the cafe,Alex and I executing anyone who moaned. When we got into the main room, three men dropped from a hole in the wall. Mg-42 fire and mortars were rinnging out from every direction and throwing us around.
"A few minutes this place will be down around or ears!"Alex said fearfully.
"Fancy seeing you here sarge." One of the men said smiling at McCullin.
"It's going to hell in a hacksaw out there!"The Sarge replied,"You run into much trouble?"
"These boys just lot their whole squad."
"Nah",the man with the M1 Grand said,"but the German's sure as hell did."
Another shell went off too close, sending us all to our backs.
"This place will be rubble inside of two minutes",Alex said with hs voice full of fear,"we can't stay here!"
"Wait dammit",The Sarge barked,"where is everybody?" "Sound off."
"Everyone is dead!" I replied as another explosion went off.
"That's it",Alex said,"I'mm falling back!"
McCullin trained his gun on my brother, causing Hayes and I to raise our weapons at him.
"FRANK!"The man with the M1 said,"Frank, put the gun down, let's all just calm down!"
"Your not crazy enough to shoot me!",Alex said angrily.
"Desertion a capital offense Perez",McCullin snapped,"shooting you won't be crazy,it'll be the sanest thing I'v ever done!"
"Frank",the man with M1 said again,"comon now!"
"We all know your not going to shoot me",Alex said,"'cause if you do Jack will kill you where you stand."
"Hey guys",Hayes said,"we got ourselves a tunnel here!"
"Looks like we got a way out",I said.
"All right, were buggin out, move!" "We'll continue this later",I said to McCullin as we dropped down through the tunnel.
Loud boot steps and yelling in German began to echo through the tunnel.
"Hey",Hayes said,"we got live ones down here!"
I could hear them, but see them I could not. I began to glance around the room. I could see a large wine rack that split the room into three corridors. I turned the corner to see a German soldier raising his Mauser. I quickly fired two shots, the man dropped into the dirt with out so much as a grunt. I then side strafed through the room, finding another soldier crouched with an MP-40. I reacted quickly, firing three rounds, dropping him into the dirt.
"Area clear,I shouted taking a fresh mag from my kit,"move up!"
I took point up the stairs. I could hear more shouting and MG-42 fire from the rooms above me. As I cleared the stairs,I spotted two soldiers hiding behind walls and another manning an MG-42. I lifted my rifle to my shoulder and cracked off three rounds, two of them ripped through the sheet rock wall and into the Germans behind them while the third entered the machine gunner's waist, sending him to the ground.
"Room clear",I called as I moved to the next one, finding two more MG-42s,both of which I disabled.
"Everyone regroup in the middle room!" McCullin called.
I quickly reloaded my rifle and went into the middle room.
"Nice work boys",The Sarge said,"check your ammo levels and smoke...
Everything went quiet to me as I noticed a Panzer rolling around the corner, turning it's turret in our direction. I opened my mouth to yell,"Panzer",but the tank fired, cutting me off before I could. I was thrown to my back,McCullin landed on top of me,blood pouring from his mouth,he was dead. I shoved him aside and looked around for my Carbine, spotting it laying in the corner. I grabbed it and began to sight and drop targets as fast as I could.
"Counter attack!",Hayes screamed.
"Hold this position!" Alex called over the crack of his Springfield,"the 52nd is inbound!"
The Nazi push was relentless, the more we killed, the more showed up,the regular infantry now joined by Waffen SS Stromtroopers.
"Jack!",Hayes yelled,"get on that 42 and give these bastards a taste of their own medicine!"
I ran for the machine gun and raised it up through the window,it made a horrible sound as I let it rip. For once, the sound of this dreaded machine gun, feared and respected by both Allies and Axis powers, was like music to my ears. The German's gave little fight as they fell under the storm of lead that the 42 let off. Bit by bit,the German's began to move back.
"Keep up the pressure!" I shouted over the crack of the machine gun,"there falling back!"
After ten more minutes of gunfire, the 52nd finally arrived, cleaning up what resistance was left.
"That's it",Hayes said panting,"the German's are bugging out,Alex,radio division,we've taken Saint Lo."
I panted as I dropped the machine gun and fell to my back, laughing as I did.
"We did it!"I laughed,"we did it!"
After laying there for a few minutes,I pulled myself up,picked up my rifle and went to mete the commander of the 52nd.
"Jack Perez",he said shaking my hand,"you and your brother have done your country a great service."
"Thank you sir!" I replied smiling.
"Wheres the rest of your team soldier?"
"Dead sir",I replied,"there all dead."
"I'm sorry for your loss son",the General replied,"but it can't be helped." "And neither can this."
The General quickly drew his Colt .45 and shot Hayes straight in the face. The bullet ripping through his head, killing him before he even began to fall backwards. Time seemed to slow down around me as Hayes fell into the dirt. Alex tried to draw his rifle, getting shot in the gut as he did so. As I tried to draw my Carbine, four men took hold of my arms, stripping me of my kit and weapons.
"YOU TRAITOR!" I screamed.
"I'm no traitor,"The General said smiling,"you'll see in time."
"So is he a match?" A man with a strange looking rifle asked walking to the General's side.
"Let's hope." The General said.
The four men handcuffed me and dragged me to a waiting Deuce. Loading me into the back and then entering themselves.
"Why?" I asked the General as he climbed into the truck,"why would you betray your country?"
"You'll see soon enough.' The General replied as a Medic approached me with a large needle.
"HEY",I said half shouting, and half speaking,"What the hell is this shit!?!"
It felt like I was being stabbed as the Medic plunged the needle into my neck. It was revolting as the warm, vile tasting liquid filled my throat and I began slip out,my vision steadily going dark.
"Go to hell....Nazi bastard."I said as I fell off.
When i awoke,I was sitting upright in a metal chair, with my hands cuffed down to a table which was bolted to the ground. The room was covered in a white carpet, like what you might find in an insane asylum. I slowly began to check myself over. I was wearing all white pants, boots and a shirt, with selves that were skin tight below my elbows and finger less gloves. My neck was extremely sore from the needle. As I gradually came back to reality,I began to feel very light headed and threw up on to the floor. I moaned as I wiped my mouth off.
"What the hell just happened?" I asked myself aloud.
The door clicked open and the General that had killed Hayes and Alex walked in,followed by two men in lab coats and another man who looked like a Five Star General.
"Name,Jack Perez, the man with a clipboard began,"age,15,Father,Mason Perez, brother,Alex Perez and no known sister."
"You flailed General Price, the old General said,"the first ever recruit, and he's a failure!" "I knew this was a waste of time."
"Who the hell are you people!" I snapped,"Where and I and where is my brother!?"
"Your underneath the Pentagon son",The older General said. "You were drafted into a top secret military program known as Project Draco."
"What the hell is Project Draco?"I snapped again.
The older General pulled up a chair a chair and sat in front of me,ordering the others to leave. We sat in silence for the longest time, then ,he spoke.
"Project Draco was founded in 1941 when a living dragon was discovered in an old temple in China." "With some doing,we collected a few samples of her DNA before she passed." "We have since tried to grow new dragons, but all have failed." "Around two years ago,one of our top scientists discovered a break in the human genome the genes we got from the dragon fit like a missing puzzle piece, suggesting that humans may be able to transform into dragons when exposed to the gene." "Wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men." "Our goal is to create the perfect super soldier." "You",Jack Perez,"are the fist ever Project Draco recruit." 'When we tried to cross you DNA with the dragons,it failed,it's miracle it didn't kill you."
'Why me?" I snapped balling my hands into fists and throwing myself at him.
"Hmm",The General said,"maybe you wern't a fail after all."
I then noticed that the feel of the handcuffs around my wirsts were gone. I looked on to the floor and saw them laying in pieces. I'd broken the military grade handcuffs.
"Have a look at yourself soldier." The General said pointing to a mirror.
I looked into the mirror and was shocked at what I saw. My hair had gone from jet black to a light brown, almost blond. My eyes had gone from a dark green to sliver with black slits and inhuman flecks of midnight blue threaded into them. It was kinda scary.
"You sure this ain't as far as it goes?" I asked checking myself to see if any other area of my body had changed.
"Positive",the General said,"your brother went all the way."
"Alex is here?" I asked spinning around and staring into his eyes.
"Just down the hall",the General replied,"Ill take you to see him."
"Oh and by the way,"the General said turning to me,"your new name."
"New name?" I asked confused.
"Yes",he replied,"your new name is Nolan Xavier Scott." "Welcome to Project Draco General."
