A Dragon's Tale-Chapter 16-The Resistance
#16 of A Dragon's Tale
The year is 1999. Retried Marines John Alex Mason, friend Hudson James Weaver and brother Issac Tyler Mason, have stepped back into the Corps to rescue their fellow Marine and brother in arms Wyatt Nolan Clarke. The friends are overjoyed to get the team back together. Little do they know that this is 30 year old John's last mission.....as a human anyway....
I woke to Adelind nuzzling me.
"Good morning my love, she said softly, did you sleep well?"
"Yes,I said in a soft voice and nuzzling her back. "I had a dream about the day we met."
"I remember, she said moving closer to me,we had gotten lost during flight school."
I laughed,"I seem to remember you calling me cute?"
"Oh",Adelind said placing her head beside mine,"that never happened."
"I think it did",I replied licking her,"and I also seem to remember the four weeks we spent in that cave, even after you said we'd go our separate ways in the morning. Or did I just imagine that?"
Adelind laughed, but didn't say anything. I looked around at our cubs. Ace and Dusk were on their backs, wings limp at their sides with light snores. Kayel was was balled up between Tyson's paws, who was fast asleep, his torn, but nicely healing wings limp like his brothers and Helix was curled up in the corner.
"Come on",Adelind said,"let's go get something to eat."
Quietly as not to wake the kids,we slipped out of our room and headed for the mess hall. I had to follow Adelind because I'd been in a coma the entire time I'd been here. When we exited the barracks,I was stuned at what I saw. There was grass, not sand as I'd expected. The grass between my claws was a feeling I missed and welcomed back. I sank my claws in to the moist ground, the feeling of it reminded me of the preserve. Many dragons and their cubs were moving about, playing or just hanging around. There were a few metal buildings, some small, some 4 stories high. The camp was surrounded by a ring of mountains and the sky was a brilliant mixture of orange, red and blue.
"Welcome to the Resistance HQ",Adelind said.
"It's amazing,I said.
We walked down to the mess hall and Ator met us there. The mess hall was a large, white tent with metal pipes jutting out of the top. The smoke they carried had an aroma that was driving me nuts.
"Aww",Ator said,"Tyro,your drooling!"
"I can't help it!",I said now noticing that i was drooling very profusely,"I haven't eaten anything in six months,I'm starved!"
"Heh,Ator said,I bet."
I now noticed that Ator had scars on his abdomen and back from where he had been impaled by a ten foot long wooden spike.
"How did that wound heal?",I asked motioning to his abdomen.
"It took four months of surgery, but the doctors say I'll recover." "James has been cooking my stuff with extra spices to tenderize and to help my stomach because the stake really screwed me up." "Whatever it is that he puts in it,it works."
"Enough talk",Adelind said,"let's actually go in and get something to eat!"
On her order, the three of us entered the mess hall and were greeted by the rest of the team, who were all over joyed to see us.
"Thought we'd lost you,Rolland said with a bit of a laugh.
"It turns out I'm stubborn,I said with a laugh.
"Was wondering when you'd wake up,a voice called,I was worried sick."
The voice belonged to Sozenn. I turned to see him standing behind me with Cora and his cubs,a smile on his face. We locked heads.
"You know I'm going to have to kick your ass in front of Adelind for the shit you just pulled."
"Good to see you Sozenn,I said with a laugh.
Sozenn returned my laugh,"You too Tyro."
We took spots in the corner of the tent. The sent of roasting meat and fish was torture to my empty stomach. I could feel it growling.
"You okay man,Sozenn asked, you look like your about to pass out."
"I will if I don't eat something,I moaned.
Then, plates of meat were brought to us. I placed it between my paws and ripped off the biggest piece I could fit in my mouth and still chew at the same time. It was amazing,it melted so much,i almost didn't have to chew it. Needless to say that piece of meat satisfied my hunger. It had sweet spots, sweeter spots, and even sweeter spots.
"I hate all of you",I said still chewing on the meat.
"Why,Val asked sarcastically.
"For not jerking me out of that coma sooner and then eating like this every single day."
Vez huffed, but I ignored her, keeping my eyes locked on the meat as I chewed on it.
"Tyro,Taro called from the door way, come here, there's some one who want's to talk to you."
I looked at Taro, then at the meat, with a single motion,I swallowed it and then went with Taro.
"So who want's to see me",I asked.
"Lung Wei,Taro said, the highest ranking dragon in the resistance, right next to me."
"Why does he want me,I asked,as soon as I'm recovered,Adelind and I are taking the kids and going back to the preserve."
Taro's face turned deadly serious.
"You can't go back to the preserve Tyro,Taro said, the US military has put a bounty on your head, they labeled you rouge and want you nothing short of dead."
I huffed,"Your joking right?"
"No,Taro said, and if they find you, they'll kill your kids and your mate, before killing you."
I shuttered from the thought of harm being done to Adelind or the kids because of me.
"Why,I asked,why was I labeled rouge?"
"Because you failed a mission,Taro said, you fail and don't come back, they label you rouge."
We walked up the steps of a large temple,it looked like it was carved into the mountain side. The ancient atmosphere it carried was a spin off from the rest of the place. Taro led me to a door with a dragon etched into the rock,it was something to look at. The door opened with a grinding, stony sound. Taro led me through the fire lit passage ways and into a large room, where a older looking dragon was waiting for us.
"You must be Tyro,he said,I am Lung Wei,please, sit. I lay down where I was as he began to speak.
"20 years ago,he said,I rescued Taro from death,he was nearly killed by his former friend,Tyson.
I shivered a bit at hearing that name.
"I can understand your thoughts,he said looking me in the eye,but I assure you, this dragon was evil, nothing like your adopted son."
"How did you know he was adopted,I asked.
"I've been around a long while,he said staring at me,I pick things up."
"Anyhow,Lung continued, shortly after Taro recovered,he and I formed the resistance." "We are dragons who will no longer tolerate being used like tools." "And we would like you to join our ranks."
I tossed the idea around in my head,on one hand, part of me wanted to help my brothers still being used "like tools",if what Lung said was true. But on the other hand,I enjoyed being in the military,it was always good to me,and something about the discipline involved made it that much more attractive. On a third note,I didn't trust Lung,I don't know why,I just didn't,part of me was screaming to take Adelind and the kids as far away as possible.
"If I join,I said, you have to promise me a few things,1 you leave my cubs and my mate out of it,2,I will only work with my friends form Strike Force Raven,Taro and Sozenn,3,you have to promise not to purposely put me in a situation where I am pitted against another dragon,4,if I decide to leave, anything about me,and my family and friends, must be burned."
"Are we clear?"
I was not taking any chances,if he said no,I'd disappear,Adelind, the kids, the team and Sozenn with me.
"I agree to your conditions,he said.
"Then were in,I said, but know this,I said standing and looking Lung straight in his eyes.
"You take one step backwards, make one false move, give me ONE reason to THINK you might cause harm to my family or friends, and I will end you, right then and there."
I could see Lung shaking a bit,I had gotten the reaction I was looking for. Taro and I left the room.
"Did you mean it,he asked.
"Mean what,I returned.
"Mean it when you said you'd kill him if he made one false move?"
"Every,word,I said.
