All is revealed!
Chapter 10: Broken
"How could you let him touch you like that?" Garth snapped at Lilly's unsuspecting face. He met her in a dark corner behind a grouping of trees.
"And the whole time," Garth snapped, "he didn't even care.
"Who didn't care?" asked Lily softly and innocently.
"Your own damn mate! Humphrey!"
Lily looked at the ground, "I didn't expect him to. We're not exactly close." Then she gasped and looked up. She couldn't have said that. She should've said he's not being as sensitive as Garth was. But it was too late, all I had been revealed.
"He doesn't deserve you." Garth's voice grew heavy. "You of all. The...best wolf I've ever known. And he has you."
It's not like we had a choice," scolded Lily in a whimper, "and neither did you and Kate." "Don't talk that way," said Garth gently. It was not what she said that bothered him but how she said it. So bluntly and callously. It took away the softness in her voice that's so melted his heart.
"Lilly," he said with a slight gasp, "you're the only person I've ever loved. And to see you with him at every day as he looks at you as if you were just some other wolf pains me deeply. I hate him for it! He has the best, most beautiful wolf at his side and he looks on as if she's nothing." Garth quickly reminded himself that he was going off on a tangent and redirected his anger towards the shaggy dog named August. "The worst of all is that you let that dog touch you that way and you...you licked his cheek and you danced with him that way. That _human_way!"
"Please Garth don't get angry with me," she said softly again. Garth's heart sank he never wanted to yell at her ever again. He looked at her glistening lavender eyes, her white fur that blew in the breeze, her slender body. The only thing he ever wanted to yell at her was her name--her name--as he wrapped his forelegs around her and pressed her tightly to his body as if part of him was falling away and he desperately grasped on to every bit of himself. He wanted her so bad it hurt him--physically. He was getting horrible cramps and headaches and it was showing in his demeanor. He was grumpier and more spiteful even do his close friends. And now he looked at her as if she was his only cure. But he couldn't have it. It was as if fate itself was taking sadistic pleasure in depriving him of the only thing that could make him well again.
"Please Lily," he whispered as he slowly approached, "I'm sorry."
She backed up in fear. She couldn't imagine how much in the same position as they both were in. Whenever he was around, she never felt any pain. No physical pain. Away from him, she had upset stomachs, migraines, and sometimes and insomnia. She couldn't explain it.
"Lily," he said again softly and closing in on her, "I love you. And there's no other person in the world I'd rather have as my mate then you." Then his voice raised again. "But I swear, if I see him touching you that way again, I'm going to succumb him to the same pain that I feel every second I realize I can't have you. It'll be enough to make him pass you."
"Why don't you do that to Humphrey!!!" She yelled. Immediately the pains of guilt swept through her. She wished no harm on Humphrey. It was not his fault that she couldn't be with Garth. "But you're all talk! You're all talk! And you don't do anything about it! Not try to change anything, no! You're an alpha and you change nothing! What is the purpose of having alphas if they are so cowardly?"
She couldn't control herself nor her anger. She wanted nothing more than to just be the soft-spoken omega for the rest of her life. To dance in the fields and play with the insects along with her tail and privately perform impersonations of turtles. But slowly that Lily was dying in her and she could feel it and she could do nothing more than just a shout at every little thing that reminded her that she was dying when the one she loved held the only key to her survival.
Garth stood there stunned in silence, but he moved. He moved closer, dropping his muzzle enclosing his massive body on her slender white frame. He tried to shop himself--to stop--but he couldn't. He had lost control of himself. An Alpha! All those years of training and learning to be brave and to control himself, especially from selfish desires, seemed wasted. He couldn't resist.
He wanted her. And there was only so far that she could make herself back up.
*************
Kate and Humphrey moved along the rocky path through the forest. The cool moonlight shined through the tree branches onto the two, and a nice brisk wind reminded them both that autumn was on the way.
"Did you enjoy the show, Kate" asked Humphrey, his voice jovial and lively. Kate smiled and she looked at Humphrey's blue eyes they were shining, again youthful insensitive. She was so happy though she cannot quite describe it. She was happy to see Humphrey once again as the carefree, fun-loving wolf that she always knew him to be. She did not want that to die.
"It was the greatest show I've ever seen in my life."
He grinned, which made her more excited, and he said "You want to come down to the cave some time and listen to them play? I've been going down there every day and just listening to them."
"I would love to, said Kate, though she knew that her other responsibilities would make it almost impossible. "But she didn't want that glow in his eyes to fade. "Maybe I will. Someday. No. I'm sure I will."
And they walked some more. They really didn't talk a whole lot but just strolled together meaningless. Yet it was so overwhelming. All the troubles with her marriage she had forgotten and all her responsibility. She loved just do nothing and enjoy this time with Humphrey: her closest friend. It felt good to think of him that way.
Suddenly, something broke the silence between them. It was not a sound but is sent. It was so potent and so familiar to Kate, yet she had never smelt it that way before. It had been contaminated by something.
"Wait Humphrey," she said. Without seeing if Humphrey was following, she pushed her way hastily through the bushes and finally came across an opening in the forest.
There, before her stabbing yellow eyes, were the bodies of her own husband... and sister. He was pressing her to the ground. There muzzles rubbing each other furiously, as if they could take the skin off each other's noses. His body grinded against hers and he painted her name at least five times. Her eyes were closed and she occasionally nipped at his lips or nose. She took in whatever she could've him happily. There was so much heat between them.
Suddenly, Kate's view became disrupted by a big, black presence that had eyes staring at her glaring. It was Iargo. As soon as she noticed this, she saw Garth and Lily spring up from their feet, both shaken in surprise and embarrassment. Then Humphrey appeared joining the side of Lily. He had seen the whole thing too. His eyes heavy and weighed down towards the ground and his voice so low and broken as he said to her, "Come on. Let's go home."
Lily did not look at Kate once. Instead she bowed her head and swiftly followed her mate home. The perfect escape for her. But Kate didn't meet her eyes with those of Garth's. Still, she could feel them staring at her coldly and shouted one million things. The most prevalent of which was:
"You understand, right? You understand because you can't give me what she can?"
This litany of silent rants was swiftly broken when Garth ran off carelessly. Iago followed in his direction calmly and slowly.
Kate was alone.
