The Adventures of Nall Wolf
Chapter 4: The Test
Nall had been tossing and turning all night long thinking about the events that had happened before he went to bed. He continuously wondered if he was that strong, or if he had finally snapped from the depressing monotony that was his life. He finally decided to give up on sleep after waking up for the 20th time. He slipped out of bed and into some shorts and headed off to the bathroom.
He stood in front of the sink, staring at himself in the mirror. "At least I don't look any different." He finished up and headed back to his room. The Blackberry on the bed said it was 11:23 AM, so he jumped on the Internet and checked the weather.
"Hmm, looks nice. Think I'll head outside..." He quickly disconnected, changed into his usual walking clothes, and grabbed his phone and music player. He put on the headphones, turned on the music, and threw on his jacket as he walked out the door.
"I wonder where a good place would be..." Nall thought with a swaying tail as he walked down the road. The "lighter than usual/easier to walk" feeling from the other day had returned, so he decided to experiment with that first. He pushed off the ground in a half-hearted jump and easily went 10 feet up in the air before coming back down. He started to crack up again as he landed.
"Guess this means I better get over my fear of heights!" he said through the uncontrollable chuckling. Next up was speed. He looked down the road to see if anything was in his way, and then took a running stance. He pushed off, only to find himself soaring down the road, easily clearing 200 feet in a second. He tried to stop, but ended up tumbling head over heels past the end of the road. He eventually stopped by slamming into an old fence post, cracking it in the middle.
"That wasn't too fun..." The laughing had finally stopped, as he realized that these abilities can be dangerous. What if he had slammed into something harder? Or landed on something sharp? He did take notice that he wasn't as damaged as he should have been, considering his body just skipped across some rocks and slammed into a 1 foot square wooden post, cracking it. He was a little sore, and had a few small scrapes, but that was the extent of his injuries.
Now it was time for the true test, a test of strength. Nall decided to go a little out of town for it, so he started down the dirt road that continued from where his home road ended. On the way, he practiced controlling his speed and stopping. Soon, he was able to move around well enough to look like he was teleporting. His image blurred and disappeared where he started and re-appeared where he stopped. There were still a few instances of tripping or slamming into trees, though.
He finally reached a small wooded area with a ditch going through the middle. "This should be good enough." He got out his music player and manually changed the song to "Head Strong" by Trapt. While he listened to the song, psyching himself up, he looked at the trees around him. He finally picked a fairly large one.
"Well, here we go. Hope I don't break a hand..." He dug his hind paws into the ground and slugged the tree as hard as he could. It started cracking loudly as the trunk was bent in from the punch. Nall pulled his hand back, expecting to have some broken bones after doing that kind of damage. The only injury was some painful bloody knuckles.
As he turned away, the tree started cracking again; it was going to fall, and he was right in the path. Nall thought about catching it, but decided against it at the last second as he flash-stepped out of the way. The tree crashed down loudly, as many branches snapped under the huge trunk.
"What the hell was I thinking! That thing would have crushed me!" He walked up to a smaller tree, one he could easily wrap his arms around with room to spare. He started to pull up on the tree as his tail swung back and forth. The roots were popping underground as it started to move. It finally broke free, sending Nall backwards. He landed on his back with an"Oof!" as the small tree fell on top of him. He pushed it off with ease and got up. Nall then picked up the small tree, snapped all the branches and the thinner top off, and held it like a large baseball bat.
"Batter up..." He swung the tree toward another similarly sized one. Both trees splintered on contact, sending shards of wood everywhere as the target tree fell down.
Across town on top of a forested hill stood a black panther. He was wearing black pants with a full-length black leather coat. He was looking in the direction of Nall with a two-way radio in his hand. He was startled as a voice came over it.
_ "Steve, come in. Did it work? Does he have powers?"_
"Oh, it worked all right..." muttered the panther as he watched the gray wolf practically destroy the wooded area.
_ "Well, what kind of powers did he manifest?"_
"It looks like his speed and strength have improved dramatically"
_ "So he's strong, huh?"_
"...You have no idea. If we're going to confront him, you had better send backup. I don't want to be the one to potentially piss him off." Steve said with fear in his voice.
_ "Alright then Steve - he must be pretty fucking strong to scare you like that. Just keep an eye on him for today and make sure he doesn't do anything stupid. We'll confront him tomorrow with plenty of agents on standby just in case, but from what we've seen earlier I don't think we'll need them._
"Copy that." said Steve as he revealed his black feathered wings and flew up to the top of a tree to get a better view.
"I think that's enough of that for today." said Nall, feeling a little sore after destroying multiple trees. He spent the rest of the day trying to perfect his flash-step, adding in some jumping to "teleport" to different house roofs around town, and occasionally slipping off and landing on his butt.
It started to get dark, so he headed home and spent the night wondering what to do with these new abilities as he watched TV. He eventually got tired and stripped down, played "Anywhere But Here", and went to sleep.
