Jake slowly walked to his bedroom. He had just told his parents he was gay and they didn't take it very well. They had grounded him until he could get his own house. He got in his bedroom and shut the door quietly behind him. He went into his bathroom and looked in the mirror. He saw a 15 year-old 5 foot 6 dragon, completely covered in black scales. His white t-shirt and jeans squeezed his body and showed slight muscles. His eyes were worn down and tired. He ran to his bed and jumped on it, hitting the matress with his fists. He slammed his face down into his pillow. "Why..." Jake could only muster a whisper from the pillow. Tears ran down his face and soaked his bed. Although he knew his parents hated him, he knew they couldn't hate him tomorrow, of all days. His birthday was tomorrow. It was also a school day, so he would have to wait till the end of the day to celebrate. He tried his best to fall asleep, and he finally did.

His alarm clock blared a loud beep, and he slammed it before it could make another. He stretched his arms out and got up, grabbing fresh clothes from his closet. He slipped them on and walked out of the room. The house was quiet, but he knew it would be. Jake's parents always left early. The house wasn't very big, just a few rooms. It was enough though, for just him, his sister and his parents. He grabbed a popsicle out of the freezer and walked outside. His sister, Sam (short for Samantha) was standing at the bus stop. He up to her, smiling when he got near her. "Hey, Sam." He smiled warmly. Sam was a blue dragon, the same height as him. She had always been his best friend, and she was the first person he had ever told he was gay. "Hey, Jake, did you tell them?" She tilted her head a bit while asking the question. "Yeah... they didn't take it too well. They grounded me until I could find a place of my own. They seemed pretty mad, too." He looked at the ground and a tear fell from his eye. "It's ok, Jake." She put his arm around him. "They can't stay mad at you forever." The bus had been running later than usual. It had always been 5 minutes late at the least, but 10 minutes had past and it still wasn't there. "I'm just gonna fly to school." Jake said as he took off from the ground. He didn't like flying. The last time he tried he got distracted by a cute lion on the ground and hit a house. It costed $800 in repairs.

He flew straight to school, not looking at anything but his destination. When he landed he was greated by his best friend, a really tough bulldog named Tracey. He was hardened inside and out. He was alot taller than Jake, at least a foot taller. "Hey, Jake, how are ya today?" His voiced boomed loudly, even to the dragon's ears. "Good, I guess." Jake walked past his friend, into the school. It was a massive school. Thousands of students walked its halls at a time and there were hundreds of teachers. Jake tried to count during one of his free periods, but ran out of time at 240 teachers and 1890 students. His first period was math. He hated his teacher, a poodle way to short for her age. She gave the hardest tests, the longest projects and worse, the most homework. He walked to his class slowly, dragging his feet.
