Chapter One
The wind carried some leaves down the old cobble stone road and sidewalk. A door slammed a few yards behind me and the moon light was the only light around. I stretched out my wings, everything on my body hurt. And what better way to kill off the pain of working in the military all day? Going to a bar and downing it out with beer. My entire seven foot tall dragon body was dying for rest, wishing for it to be with someone else but nearly all my nights were spent alone.
I pushed open the doors to the bar and looked around. Like normal there were a bunch of random furs sitting around in the bar, drinking and playing pool. But one of them stood out from the rest, he was the cutest dragon I had ever seen. He was sitting at the bar. He had green scales, except for on his neck which were red and maybe down his body but I couldn't tell. He had spikes going up and down his back, from the top of his neck all the way to the end of his tail.
I walked over to the bar and sat next to the green dragon. I ordered a beer and sat looking around while I waited on it. I wanted to say something to the dragon but I was too shy to say anything. I sipped from my beer when it got to me. I had drunk two beers before the dragon spoke up.
"Why you going to heavy on the drinking?" he asked.
"Sore from work," I said.
"Ah I see, where you work?" he asked.
"I work with those guys, you know them, the United Plant Alliance," I told him.
"Oh?"
"Yeah, you're speaking to admiral John Dragoon Al," I told him.
"You're kidding, you're that dragon?" he asked.
"Yes, I am the 'Slayer of the Sector 103' 'The Destroyer of Planets' and all of those other nicknames the public has given me,"
"Wow, never thought I would talk to someone with such skill, and all that," He said.
"Please for once, don't talk about it, when people find out it's all they want to talk about, it gets old real fast," I told him.
"Oh, sorry,"
"It's fine; by the way, what's your name?" I asked.
"My name is Silas, Silas Maximus. I work at the auto shop down the road, play some guitar and love doing nothing. Nice to meet you John, by the way," Silas said.
"Nice to meet you too Silas," I said as I smiled.
"Well John, I have to be heading home, my brother will kill me for being out so late," Silas said
"Aw, do you have to leave so soon?" I asked.
"Yeah, sadly my brother makes me get home by eleven, and I'm already two hours late," He told me, "Also be careful around these parts, plenty of muggings happen around here, there's some gang that 'controls' the area. Well see you later John."
With that Silas got up from the stool he was on and smiled at me before turning and walking out of the bar. I sighed slightly and got up as well. I walked out of the bar and turned left down the sidewalk. The small apartment I had while my fleet was stationed around the planet was just a short walk from the bar.
The cool breeze felt good on my scales. The planet was in its winter stage, but it was not very cold, not compared to many winters I had been through. I had went to the bar hoping to get drunk, but thanks to Silas I had hardly gotten a buzz, my race of dragons had a high immunity to almost every drug.
I heard footsteps, several pairs, approaching me from behind. I continued to walk as the footfalls became quicker and closer together. Then I felt a hand grab my arm and a blade to my neck.
"Give me your money dragon and we won't kill you," One of the men said.
"How about this, you turn around and walk away and I won't kick the life out of you?" I asked him grinning.
"What was that? Want to feel this knife slit that pretty neck of yours?"
"Please, I have been at end of ten thousand battleships, I think I can take a couple of thugs," I said.
"Wait, you're kidding me, you're John Dragoon Al are you not?"
"Yes, the admiral in charge of the fleet over our heads right now, with one press my friend Kel could blow you head away with one of the ship's guns," I told him.
"I wonder how much they would give for someone like you," The man said ignoring me.
"I'm tired of this," I said.
I grabbed the man's arm and twisted it. He yelped in pain and dropped the large knife. I pulled him forward over my shoulder and slammed him down onto the ground. The other man punched my side. I turned and kicked the man in the side of the head with one motion. Both of the men lay on the ground wining.
"Hey are you alrigh- oh." Someone said, I hadn't even heard him coming up.
"Yeah I'm fine," I said and turned and saw that it was Silas. "Hey what you still doing around here?"
"I walk slow, and I heard all the commotion, thought I would come and try to help, but it looks as if you can handle yourself," He said with a chuckle.
"Well I have been at the receiving end of a thousand or so battleships, so I think I can take a couple of thugs," I said grinning.
"I hear that, just make sure to not let me be on your receiving end," He said smiling.
"That won't he too hard, I don't get mad and I won't fight if I don't have to," I told him, "now I guess you have to be heading home now?"
"Well... I should be heading home yes, but the night is still young is it not?" He asked me.
"No not really but I'll say yes if that means getting to hang out longer," I told him, we both laughed.
Silas showed me around some parts of the town, him being an 'auto person' he has to travel a lot, mostly to make sure the cars and stuff work right. He also told me about his small cabin he owns in the mountains outside of the city. I was about to ask if we could hang out there sometime when he said he really needed to get home, the sun was beginning to come up. I told him where he could drop me off and he took me to my apartment, a cheap piece of crap. He said that he understood why I wanted to stay out, we said our good byes, and I went inside and slept through most of the day, I missed two meetings with my officers, and a meeting with my lead general.
