Chapter Five: Town
I woke to the sound of someone yelling my name. I sat up quiet fast, not paying attention to what I was doing. My paw landed in the coals from the fire, as soon as it touched I jerked it out. I felt my paw burning, it hurt like hell.
"Damn it, I'm awake." I said, almost yelling it.
"Crap, are you ok?" I head Blake ask me.
"I'm fine, just burnt my paw." I told him.
"Sorry, should have woke you up, a different way I guess." He said.
"Yeah maybe, hand me some cloth wraps would you?" I asked him.
"Yeah sure." He said.
I heard him rummaging through the bag we had. After a few moments he handed the wraps. I wrapped up my paw. It still hurt like hell. I pulled a glove out of my pocket and put it on to hide the wraps.
"You're sure you will be ok?" Blake asked me.
"Yes I'm fine, I have had much worse." I told him.
"Right, Serra went on ahead, she told me to get you up after a while if you did not get up on your own." He told me.
"How long has she been gone?" I asked him.
"About an hour or two." He said.
"Oh, well I guess we better get going." I said.
"Yeah, let's go. Oh, you're carrying the bag." He told me.
"Fine." I said.
I stood up and grabbed the bag. It was heavy,, but I could deal with it. We started down the road again. My hand burned, even worse seeing how I had to use both hands to keep the bag up. After a while of walking in silence Blake spoke up.
"So, what do you think of Serra?" He asked me.
"What do you mean?" I asked him.
"Well, I see the way you look at her sometimes, and the way you always blush around her." He said.
"I, don't know what you're talking about." I said nervously.
"Sure you don't. Damn assassin, just show your feelings for once." He told me.
"Hey, fuck you." I said and walked on past him.
"Listen, I know you have feelings for her, weather you realize it or not. And sooner or later you will have to realize that." He called up to me.
I continued to walk on without saying anything back to him. He shut up about it, and I was thankful for that. We walked for a few hours, and then I saw the town. It was still far off in the distance, but I could make out some buildings, a church, and the small castle that controlled it. I wondered if Serra already made it to the town. I also pondered on my feelings, mainly about Serra. What if Blake was right? What if I did like her? I couldn't, she is just another job, one that I have started to get too close to.
"Come on hurry up." Blake said walking past me.
"Yeah yeah I'm coming." I said.
"You know, I think Serra might like you, whether or not you like her." Blake said.
"Why do you say that?" I asked him walking up beside him.
"Well, just as you, I see the way she looks at you. You know, when I got up she was already up, putting up her tent. I put my tent up and when I turned around I saw her sitting next to you. I thought she was just resting next to what was left of the fire but I saw her looking at your face. When she saw that I saw her she said she was going to go ahead and for me to wake you up later." He told me.
"Oh." I said, it was all I could think of saying.
"Yeah, so whether you like her or not, she likes you." He said.
"I see." I said,
"Yeah, now all you need to do is admit your feelings for her, and there you go you have a mate." He said looking over at me.
"But....for one thing she is a dragon and I'm a wolf.. And plus I was just trying to kill her the other day, why would she like me?" I asked him.
"Well, for the first thing, race does not matter. And for the second, I have no idea, maybe she sees the good in you." He said.
"What good? I kill for money, how is there any good in that?" I asked him.
"Not in what you do, but you yourself. She must see the good side of you. You might be a killer on the outside but inside your just another person, and she sees the good within that." He told me.
"Maybe, but killing is all I know. And from what I have seen of her she does not like anyone hurt." I said.
"Yes, I know what you mean." He said.
"So what am I going to do?" I asked him.
"Well, a good killer means a good fighter, maybe you could be a guard." He told me.
"But I have the mark, and no town is going to let me be a guard." I told him.
"Good point. You could always do something for the lord of the town, and then be able to be a guard, or better, champion of the town. You would get paid like you were a guard, and all you would have to do is live in the town." He told me.
"Maybe, but for now let's just get to the town." I said.
"What do you mean get there? We are here." He said, I looked forward and so it was.
We had walked all the way while talking, I had not noticed that we had walked so far. So now we had made it to town, now it's time to find Serra I thought to myself. Well we had made it. I stood there looking around at the town as we slowly walked down the street looking for Serra.
