Life From A New Perspective - Chapter Six - Law of Equivalent Exchange

I spent a lot more time editing this one, so I hope I didn't miss anything and that this makes it easier to read. Hopefully I'll put together an idea for chapter seven before the end of the week, and have that finished soon after. As always, comments are always appreciated and enjoy!

The next day, I woke up to see Baldur standing in the entrance of Reenin's and my den. He silently motioned for me to follow him. I quietly moved from Reenin's warm body to follow Baldur. We walked quietly into the woods without talking for a while.

"Leandra, do you know why I asked you to come with me?" He said, breaking the silence.

"Not entirely." He stopped and sat down, looking at me.

"As you know, I am the alpha male, and Reenin is my son. If the time comes for him to be the alpha male, that would make you the alpha female. I have no doubts about the safety of the pack with you two as the alpha's, but what I'm wondering is if you would be ready to accept such a responsibility." I thought for a moment, wondering if I truly could be the alpha female that he would expect of me.

"I-I think that I could. I mean, it's not like it will happen today right?"

"Good, that's about what I thought you would say. Now, this brings me to the next thing on my mind. The love I see being shared between you and Reenin reminds me of the love shared with the wolf that was my mate. However, she was killed by my other son, Reaver, when he found he would not become the alpha. He was exiled and since then formed a pack of his own and sworn blood against us. I tell you this to be wary. I'd be the death of me to see anything happen to my son or his mate."

"Duly noted." Baldur's ears perked up sharply and he sniffed the air.

"Well, speak of the devil." Baldur said, taking a defensive stance.

"Well, well, well. Father, after all these years you're still talking so highly of me. I'm touched, truly." A wolf said, stepping forth from the shadows with two other wolves backing him up.

"Leandra, go back. Now." Baldur whispered to me. "Reaver, what you have done was murder to the one who brought you into this world. How do you live with yourself?"

"Quite nicely, actually. I get what I want, and we got a few bitches that do what we tell them."

"You mean you hold them against their will and rape them when you see fit? You are only my son in blood, not soul, a traitor of your kind." Baldur shot me another glance before one of the wolves lunged at him while he was distracted.

"Baldur!" I shouted, taking a step towards him.

"Leandra, leave now. Do it for the pack. Do it for Reenin!" he shouted, shoving the wolf off of him.

"But..."

"Now!" He shouted again. I started to turn, taking a look at Reaver who was eyeing me like a hunk of meat. I dashed back towards the den, leaving Baldur to his fate, fulfilling his last wish.

I dashed from the tree line, shouting for Reenin. He came out of his den and ran to me frantically.

"What is it?" He said panicky.

"Baldur... He... He."

"What is it?" He said.

"Reaver... He had a couple... And he attacked Baldur." I finally got out.

Reenin turned around angrily and stomped into the den. I followed him to see he was slamming into the walls and clawing at everything in reach. He started screaming before dashing back out of the den towards the woods.

"Reenin wait!" I yelled, going after him. "Reenin, it's too late, what's done is done!" He stopped and turned to face me.

"You were there, why didn't you do anything!" he shouted at me furiously.

"Reenin, I would have, I was going to but..."

"But what?" he shouted again, causing my tail to fly between my legs and lower to the ground.

"Because he told me not to." I whispered quietly, not making eye contact. A tear began to roll down my muzzle.

"Leandra..." he said quietly, stepping back. "I'm, I'm sorry. It's just..." I nuzzled his neck and licked his cheek.

"I understand." I said. We quietly walked back to the dens and saw a crowd forming, asking what had happened.

Reenin stepped forward. "Baldur, he's... Gone." Reenin walked back into his den, tears forming in his eyes. I followed him into the den, sitting next to where he sat. I nuzzled his neck, trying to make him happy again.

"Reenin, we have to tell them. You're the alpha now, he knew you could do it. I know you can do it." I said, licking his muzzle. He stood up and turned, looking out of the den. He started forward with me by his side out to the pack, our pack. There were murmurs and questions of what was going on. We sat down and Reenin raised his head.

"Baldur was attacked by Reaver and his pack members." There were gasps and a volley of questions. Everyone quieted down, and then one of the small pups, Rahol, piped up.

"What happened to him, where is he? Will he be back soon?"

I looked at Reenin, who had a tear forming in his eye, looking into the eyes of innocence.

"He, he's gone. He won't be back for a really long time." He said, unable to tell the pup the truth. The pack fully understood what he meant by that, and resumed what they had been doing, minds racing with reality. I saw Reenin heading back to the den, unable to hold back his tears anymore.

"What's wrong with Reenin?" The same small pup asked me, cocking his head to the side.

"Reenin is, he's just sad because his dad is gone, that's all." I said before heading to the den.

Reenin was lying down, quietly whimpering and whining in the middle of the den, starring off into the distance. I walked over to him and snuggled right next to him, lying my head down while he let his pain slowly seep out. We stayed like that for a while, tears forming in both of our eyes. His whines turned to whimpers and whimpers turned to silence. He stood up, me still at his side, and turned to the den's entrance just as one of the mothers ran in, panting heavily.

"Reenin, you've got to help!" She shouted, pacing back and forth shakily.

"What is it?" He said surprisingly calmly.

"One of the pups is gone, we think he ran off into the woods!" He nodded and then dashed out of the den towards the woods. I sprinted after him, passing the mother who was in tears. I caught up to him as he seemed to have locked onto a scent trail. As it got stronger I began noticing it as well.

Reenin suddenly stopped and bolted upright, ears perked and eyes searching anxiously for the missing pup. A noise emanated to our left and we both simultaneously honed in on it. It was the pup, who was unaware of our presence, seemingly looking for something.

"Rahol!" Reenin shouted harshly. The pup spun around in shock and tucked his tail between his legs and lowered his head.

"Y-yes Reenin?" He said nervously.

"What the hell are you doing out here? You could have been killed!"

"I-I-I was looking for Baldur. You looked so sad with him being gone, so I wanted to go find him and tell him to come back because it made you sad." Rahol said, a tear forming in his eye. I saw Reenin relax his muscles, his own eyes beginning to water.

"I appreciate you wanting to do that for me, but you can't just run off like that. Besides, we can't find him anymore, he's gone now." Reenin said, fading off towards the end. "Come on back home, the others are worried about you."

Rahol nodded and followed Reenin as we turned back towards the dens, his tail still tucked under his belly.

When we got back to the dens, the whole pack seemed to breathe a sigh of relief that nothing horrible had happened. A few of the pack members thanked us on our way back to our den, all of them leaving us alone as we entered our den for some privacy.

"Reenin, it's all going to be alright, you'll see." I said, trying to reassure him.

"Yea, I know." he said lightly. "What's been done is done, and now we've gotta be looking out for not only ourselves, but for our pack. It is our pack, right?"

He asked. I understood what he meant by that. He was asking me to be his alpha female and to be his mate.

"Forever and ever, I'll stand by your side." I said, licking his muzzle and nuzzling him. He chuckled slightly and returned the lick. Yep, everything was going to be all right as long as we were together.
