The light of day was slow to enter the apartment, but this didn't stop Spyro from getting up. He was up and straight in the shower, but instead of doing workouts like he normally did, he watched Cynder sleep. He watched her chest rise and fall slowly and her eyes flutter a bit as she dreamed. He sniffed the air around her and took in her scent, it was sweet and soft on the nose, the smell was not strong but it was enough to keep Spyro there. Her head moved a little and Spyro panicked for a moment, but then it settled again.
The sun was rising rapidly now, Spyro layed a hand on Cynders shoulder and spoke in a warm voice.
"Hey... rise and shine"
Cynder's eyes slowly blinked open and she began to glance around, her eyes fell upon Spyro and she spoke in slurred voice.
"This is the second time, you've been standing over me when I've woken up"
Spyro sat still but his tone became more serious
"I'm sorry, I won't do it again"
"No... no... I don't mind. Just an observation"
Cynder stretched and she slinked out of bed. She made her way to the shower and she washed herself and she felt the cleanest she had in years, She spent ages in there and just let the water run over her. She had forgotten what it was like to have a proper wash and it felt fantastic.
When she was finished her scales seemed to shine, not just because of the water but an embedded layer of depression had seemingly lifted. There was next to no difference but there was a definite change to her, she no longer slouched and instead of trudging along she walked properly and with her head held high. Cynder had gotten some of her confidence back and she was proud of herself. She looked herself over in the mirror and she realised that she wasn't that bad looking, nowhere near as bad as she thought.
She could only think of one reason why the change had happened, Spyro. He had changed her life in so many ways in one day and he never asked for anything back.
She wanted to show off her new self to him, she dried off quickly and left the room. She had a quick look around and found him in the kitchen, he was cooking something which smelled even better than the soup yesterday.
"Spyro..."
He looked up and spoke absent mindedly
"Yes Cynder? what is it you...."
He saw how she looked and he stopped, her scales shone in the light and she looked better than she ever had. He didn't bother disguising the stare, he just gawked at her for a bit. Cynder cheered in her head, it had actually worked, maybe he did like her in the same way she liked him.
"Cynder? have you had a make-over or something? because you look fantastic"
Cynder laughed a little
"You're such a smooth talker. I'll let you off for staring"
"Let's just hope everyone at school is a smooth talker. Because you are going to get A LOT of attention"
Cynder laughed and pecked him on the cheek, he froze up and he touched his cheek.
"Wow... I'm one lucky dragon... wait! did I just say that out loud?"
Cynder giggled and nodded Spyro's look turned to one of horror
"crap! I meant as in that you are helping me with things... yeah! not that fact that you kissed me"
"You kissed me yesterday and I didn't complain" Cynder said sweetly but there was a mischievous undertone, Spyro thought back to after she had given him the money. It was the perfect excuse to steal a quick kiss off her, he could just pass it off as being overly excited.
"Well... I was giddy about buying the apartment... I lost control a bit" he started to sweat a bit and Cynder advanced on him.
"What? didn't you enjoy it?" She asked and her voice was playful
Spyro squirmed under her question, he didn't want to say yes outright because that would seem weird but if he said no then it might hurt her feelings and it would be an outright lie.
"Well..." he started but then he smelt burning
"Oh crap! the bacon!" He turned to see the food beginning to blacken up. He rushed to get off the frying pan and onto to plates, but in his rush he accidently laid his tail on the burning hot pan.
With a roar he leapt up and ran the tail under water, whimpering slightly as he did. Cynder, while amused by this slapstick display, was still concerned. She rushed forward and grabbed Spyro's tail.
"Ok, this is going to be weird, but it should help"
Spyro watched as she put he by the burn and she kissed it, Spyro felt the pain slowly disappear and he relaxed. She pulled her mouth away and there was a slight green wisp in the air, Spyro watched as she check the whole area had healed.
"Wow, I thought it was just a rumour that dragons could heal through their breath"
Cynder looked at him jokily.
"Well, your tail is healed so it isn't a rumour, but it really takes it out of you"
Spyro looked at her a asked in a mock curious voice.
"If it's just your breath that heals... why did you need to kiss it, why not just breath on it?"
Cynder stopped she tensed up as she thought of an excuse but Spyro just laughed a bit.
"Now we're even, call it quits from there?"
Cynder nodded frantically and Spyro grinned.
"Brilliant, we best hurry up or we're going to be late"
************
By now the whole of school had heard the news, the new kid had beaten Flame in a match and hung about with Cynder all the time. They watched intently as they entered the school grounds, chatting like they had been friends forever.
Countless dragoness's watched in envy as the dragoness which nobody liked, spoke with the most desirable male in the school. All the male dragons, however, watched her for another reason. just as Spyro had predicted, everything single boy she passed spared a glance or two. Cynder was unnerved by this attention but Spyro just nudged her an whispered
"Hey... Do you still think you're ugly now? I've seen about 40 guys check you out, and even, I do hope I'm wrong though, a teacher"
Cynder whispered back
"maybe, but you are the only one I'm even slightly comfortable with checking me out"
"Really? well if you don't mind then... *whack* oww!"
Cynder smacked Spyro round the back of the head with her tail , not hard enough to hurt him but enough to shut him up. She smiled sweetly at him.
"Whoops! maybe you could have dodged if you weren't too busy 'checking me out', better keep your eyes off me next time. "
Spyro grumbled and he kept walking. Spyro turned a corner but Cynder stood still. He glanced back at her confused, but Cynder answered his question before he could begin to say it.
"I've got music now, I don't want to be late. I'll see you later"
Spyro's face fell and he spoke in a sad voice.
"Really?... I guess I'll see you later, meet you in front of school at break?"
Cynder nodded and gave him a kind smile.
"Yeah... that sounds great. Goodbye Spyro"
She turned and walked away, as she did Spyro felt a little part of him die. He knew he couldn't always be with her but it still made him sad to see her go. The black dragoness was more than just a friend to him now, as soon as he first saw her, he knew that the black dragoness was special.
He let his head drop and he trudged to his next class, maybe he should tell her how he felt. She was getting a lot of attention now and it wouldn't be long before a dragon tried it on her. Thought's circled his mind like vultures, picking holes were doubts were making them bigger. Maybe he shouldn't, one day wasn't enough, he wanted to get to know her. But then what if a more confident dragon comes up and snatches her away from him. He shook his head to get rid of the thoughts and continued to lesson, it was only a few hours, he could last for that long.
*************
Cynder was sitting in her music lesson, she normally loved music. She love trying desperately to try and play the instruments, but she truly loved singing. She would often find a room on her own and just let all her worries just poor out of her through song. She would often sing the same old sad song, she had forgotten the name but she had sang it to death. Normally this wouldn't bother her, but she had so much more inspiration now, she wanted to sing something exciting, something new.
She sat deep in thought in her normal room, it was dark and dingy. The darkness normally suited her fine but even this most comforting of companions was old and stale. She flung the window open and the light hit her, she covered her eyes with her wings but then she adjusted to the sudden brightness. The room overlooked a small courtyard, and kept watching out and in the distance she saw a set of apartment towers, she sighed happily as she knew one of them had her and Spyro's home in them.
Her minds clouded with thoughts of Spyro and she gazed dreamily out, she couldn't sing without knowing Spyro loved her. She felt a stab in her heart, she felt so complete by him, and yet she had no idea what he felt about her. The room behind her vanished and she was just there staring blankly out at the world.
The faint soft white puffs of cloud in the sky set the image for a perfect day, the sun was strong and the sky a deep blue.
"Blue like his eyes..."
She retreated from the window and placed herself on a stool. With a sigh she stared at the wall opposite her, but she wasn't looking. Her mind was making up many different scenario's of them together, so many impossible scenario's full of passion and love. But there was one which she got stuck on, there was a hillside, the city below them and the most beautiful sunset. The view was astounding but she wasn't looking at the view, she was staring into the purple dragons eyes. They leaned in but before she felt the soft touch of his lips, a sharp bell rang out signalling the end of lesson.
She snapped out of her day dream and she perked up. She could see him again! She gathered her stuff and began to rush towards the front of school.
********
When she arrived at the front and looked around desperately. She sat down a bench and looked glumly into the surge of dragons, not one of them purple. She sulked a bit and watched intently for a sign of him.
"Is this seat taken?"
She spun around at the voice, she met a pair of massive sapphire eyes and a gleaming smile. Her lit light up like a Christmas tree and gave an excited squeal.
"Spyro! of course not! sit down"
The purple dragon plonked himself next to her and he could barely contain his smile of joy. Cynder on the other hand could barely contain pouncing on him and kissing the dragon. She shuffled close to him and she shivered in delight as she smelled him. She gazed at him, she was being the model schoolgirl with a crush, she was practically leaning on him. Spyro however didn't care in the slightest, if it was anyone else he would have told them to go away then left. He knew it sounded harsh but he hated people obsessing over him, even that was big headed to think and he just wanted a peaceful life. Cynder however was different, mainly because if Spyro had a chance he would pull her in and kiss her again and again.
During lesson he had decided how he felt. He felt connected to her, she was a part of him and he kind of loved her. His rational side constantly screamed at him to stop thinking these thoughts, but his heart was so full of happiness it over-ruled any object.
Spyro saw a dragoness glance at them, glare for a bit the walk off again muttering something. He just laughed and spoke to Cynder quietly.
"You know, most of the school thinks I'm dating you already"
Spyro was taken a little by surprise by little care she showed, in fact she even seemed to get happier by the second.
"Really? I guess I should count that as a compliment" She kept smiling but a smirk crept onto her face.
"Why?" Spyro asked
"Well, most dragoness in the school like you, and if they think we're dating it means that they think I'm good enough for you"
Spyro chuckled at her optimism.
"I guess that's one way of looking at it. It's a good way of looking at it, certainly beats you're outlook on life yesterday"
Cynder shuffled even closer and her tail tapped his. Spyro felt his face go a bit red at the contact but Cynder kept her tail there, she was slowly turning red as well but she didn't care.
"well, I did move in with the hottest dragon in school... if that wouldn't cheer me up I have no idea what would" She spoke in a smooth voice, she gave a sky smile a few pearly white teeth glinting in the sun
Spyro felt a blood rush to his face and he stammered in surprise
"Y-y-you think I'm... hot?"
Cynder gave a single laugh and spoke in the same, seductive voice.
"Have you never looked at yourself in the mirror and thought 'damn... is that me'?"
Spyro shakily shook his head and Cynder's tail shivered in delight again, Spyro couldn't help but growl a little as he enjoyed the contact. Cynder's face was becoming more and more red, but still she kept close.
"well, I'm glad that you know now..."
Cynder was trying to be as seductive as possible, she was trying desperately tp convince him to ask her out. But then as she looked at Spyro's face she realised her plan had back fired catastrophically.
"What's got you in this mood?" Spyro asked
"oh... it's nothing... sorry I don't know what came over me. I gotta go" She instantly grabbed her stuff and walked off, cursing in her mind.
"Why hadn't it worked? I was doing my best! maybe I wasn't good enough..."
A voice yelled for her and she turned to see Spyro looking a bit confused and... hurt.
"Where are you going, please come back. Can we just talk a little bit?"
Cynder stopped, she felt a presence beside her and she tucked her head away from it.
"What did I do? whatever it was I'm sorry?" Spyro's voice was desperate but Cynder spoke nervously.
"It's not your fault... I got carried away then I acted like a slag, I'm sorry for putting you in that position."
Spyro put an wing around her and even more dragoness looked on enviously.
"You weren't being a slag... I kinda liked it, what dragon wouldn't like a dragoness like you being close to them... see? now I'm at it"
Spyro looked at his wing around her.
"I see where the rumours come from now... I swear I've hugged you more than anyone else in years. I should really stop... I bet you're freaked out by it"
Cynder laughed and her head went up again, she began to smile in happiness and she relaxed.
"You really know how to cheer me up... you are the best friend anyone could ask for."
Cynder was happy again but she didn't rush to break the contact. Her idea from earlier came back to her and she spoke to Spyro.
"I need to take you somewhere tonight. You will love it, I just want to show you something."
"it's a bit early to plan stuff like that, I means it's midday. We still got the next half of school."
"Please just promise you'll come with me"
"I promise"
Cynder jumped a little in happiness and Spyro released his wing from around her, she gave him a kiss on the cheek and practically skipped in circles. She could make her dream come true, but she'd have to try. Spyro on the other hand had froze up yet again, every single time her lips touched him his heart swelled so much it was fit to burst. The amount of contact the two had had in two days was more than most best friends, they were testing the water. They wanted to know whether the other accepted their contact.
Cynder stopped parading and saw Spyro frozen stiff again, she realised it was her kiss that did it. Everytime she did he froze up, she instantly began to worry, what if he did it because he hated the contact and he was just trying to be nice.
"I worry far too much..." she muttered and Spyro gave himself a shake. Cynder walked next to him and they set of to next lesson.
