Coffee and Contemplation
Coevolution Ch.18
It was a relatively peaceful afternoon for what was supposed to be finals week, and Umbre was frustratingly bored. Bored enough that when Levi suggested going out to a coffee shop, Umbre readily agreed without thinking, just happy for the chance to do something, anything. The walk, unfortunately, was only short enough to keep him from second-guessing himself until about halfway there.
«So you and Flynn are okay now?» Levi started, pulling Umbre out of his thoughts.
«Yeah, the night I went over, after Jonah’s… whatever, we talked some things through and then, well,» Umbre blushed and looked away.
Levi’s mouth curled into a mischievous grin. «You fucked?»
«Haha,» Umbre signed, chuckling to himself out loud. «Something like that…»
«Yeah, I know you don’t really do that,» Levi signed, rolling his eyes. «Are you sure you’re not asexual?»
Umbre glanced at Levi. «With how fucking horny we are? No chance.» Before Levi could say anything else, he pushed open the door of Alcremie’s, and immediately slammed into the back of a very tall Machamp.
The crowd inside was loud, but the smooth jazz playing over the blaring speakers was somehow louder. A cacophony of voices intertwined with an experimental saxophone slammed Umbre’s ears as the roar of the coffee machines destroyed any hope of finding a solid footing.
Umbre pulled off his cochlears and stuffed them in his pockets with a pointed look at Levi. «This is why I don’t do coffee shops.»
«Look, I was surprised when you agreed,» Levi signed with a smirk. «Not my fault you’re fuckin stir-crazy. Is this really the end of the line?» The Leafeon craned his neck to try to spot the front. «Damn, must be right after the sociology final or something.»
Umbre glanced at the line while a whole four more people jumped in behind them. «What’s so good here that this many people need anyway?»
«Well, it’s the best time for all the seasonal flavors—gingerbread, pumpkin, peppermint. But also this place loads their lattes with so much sugar that you get fuckin’ horny for it.»
«There’s a kink here, I know it.»
«Up to you to find and exploit it,» Levi signed with a wink. «And besides, they take meal plan dollars here, and everyone’s trying to use theirs up before the end of the semester anyways. Might as well for something that’s basically a coffee milkshake.»
Umbre raised an eyebrow. «Isn’t it basically winter?»
«Fraps are never out of season. Hey—it’s Jess! And Val too. Remember him?»
«Flynn’s boyfriend,» Umbre recalled, seeing the Vaporeon and Gallade bustling around behind the counter. They both seemed to be working in double-time, each with five drinks lined up at their stations and plenty more waiting on the counter, where a flustered-looking Scrafty was hurriedly punching things into the cash register.
The Scrafty yelled something at Val, who then whirled around and yelled something back—Are you fucking serious?!
Levi grabbed Umbre’s paw. «They just got ten more online orders. Fucking hell.»
«Levi, do you really want coffee this badly?» Umbre said, glancing back towards the door.
«Yes!» Levi signed, looking offended that Umbre had even thought of the question. «Alcremie’s is the best. You gotta try it.»
«This better be the best fucking coffee I’ve ever had,» Umbre grumbled. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a couple of Pokémon staring at him, but they quickly averted their gaze. He sighed. Typical.
At long last, the Machamp in front of them moved out of the way to reveal the Scrafty again. A line of paper drifted out of the receipt printer just as Umbre and Levi stepped up to the counter, and the Scrafty glared at it.
Levi immediately switched to interpretation mode. «‘...stupid fucking DooRapiDash and their stupid fucking online orders—Hey Val! We got three more!’ …something in Orreano from Val. ‘Not if I kill them first—Hello, how can I help you?’» Levi straightened on the last part, complete with a fake smile that matched the one now on the Scrafty’s face.
Umbre blinked, realizing that Levi was letting him go first. «Uh… do you have… hot chocolate?» Umbre signed, knowing that Levi would voice for him.
«‘Oh shit, he’s deaf? Cool—» Levi’s eyes widened and he directed Umbre’s attention to the Scrafty.
«Hot. Chocolate. Question mark,» the Scrafty signed. Choppy, but readable.
Umbre grinned. «Yes please.»
«Big. Less big. Less big. Which?»
Umbre tried to match the middle size the Scrafty had indicated, then fingerspelled, «Medium,» showing the sign to the Scrafty.
The Scrafty’s eyes flitted to Levi, and Levi confirmed—«Yes, medium.»
«Sorry. My. Learn-learn. Slow,» the Scrafty signed, then wrote Umbre’s order on a new cup, adding it to the pile of cups in waiting.
«I understand,» Umbre signed back, then nudged Levi to keep interpreting. «I’m happy enough to have anyone to sign with. I’m Umbre. You?»
The Scrafty held up a claw. «S. C. A.» They hesitated. «X—» They waved their hand as if trying to erase the letter. «R. L. E. T. T. E.»
«Scarlette,» Umbre spelled, smiling. «Nice to meet you. I may come again.»
«Nice to meet you too,» Scarlette signed back. That one had very clearly been well practiced. «Money?»
Umbre was about to pull out their card when Levi jumped it. «I got it,» he said. «Pumpkin gingerbread latte with cinnamon for me, please.» Umbre stifled a laugh—Levi sure loved sugar. He was sweet like that.
By the time Val called out two drinks for “the Leafeon twink and his Umbreon boyfriend,” the café had somehow almost cleared out, save for a few who had placed their order after Umbre and Levi had.
“Lots of pissy Pokés today ‘cause of you,” Val said to Levi as he handed them their drinks. “You got the last drop of gingerbread syrup. You’re lucky I like you,” he said, taking a sip from a drink of his own that also smelled suspiciously like gingerbread.
Compared to most, Val was very easy to lipread—probably thanks to his voice training in the theatre program, if Umbre had to guess. It certainly helped that the café had gotten considerably quieter.
«What a shame,» Levi said and signed one-pawed. The Leafeon had gotten quite good at one-pawed signing—not that Umbre had anything to do with that. «How much longer you got?»
“Y’all are my last batch o’ bitches, luckily. And right on cue—there’s mine,” Val said, nodding towards the door.
Sure enough, there was Flynn, who strode over to them quite quickly.
“The crossover of a century,” Flynn said. “Umbre and Val, all in one place, and talking to each other!”
Val grinned and slid the cup he had been drinking from over to Flynn. “Gingerbread latte, just for you mi amor,” he said, with a wink towards Levi and Umbre.
Levi blinked. «Didn’t you just—»
Umbre covered Levi’s paw with their own. «Shhhh.» Levi’s paw wriggled in Umbre’s, but he didn’t pull away. Val took the opportunity to go back to making drinks, but not before blowing a kiss in Flynn’s direction.
“So, what brings you two here, Umbre?” Flynn asked, taking a long sip from the latte. The three of them found themselves a table near the back, where Val could meet them at the end of his shift.
«Levi wanted to go, and I had nothing better to do,» Umbre signed, punctuated with a shrug. «What brings you here?»
“I let Val fuck me after work as an incentive to keep making money,” Flynn replied, taking another casual sip of their coffee.
Levi burst out laughing. «Are you serious?! That’s amazing. Umbre we should try something like that sometime—» He went voice-off. «Maybe you can hypno it into me?»
«Are you ever not horny for hypnosis?» Umbre signed, speaking for the first time since he’d entered the café. Flynn nearly spat out their drink.
Levi went red. «N-never, Sir,» he signed, his paws trembling.
The door of the back kitchen swung open, and Val materialized beside them, swinging his work apron on the tip of a claw. “Alright, bitch. You. Me. Back alley,” he said to Flynn, pointing behind the back wall.
Flynn spread out their arms with a look of fake shock. “Hey, I’m talking to my friends here,” they said. “Also, I’m not done with my drink yet.”
Val stuck his paws on his hips. “And what’s so important that what I wanna do with you has to wait?”
“Apparently Levi’s a slut for hypnosis,” Flynn said through a grin, hiding it behind their drink as Levi blushed even harder.
«S-stop,» Levi managed.
Val raised an eyebrow. “Hypnosis? Sounds kinky, I’m in. And in public too—is that why you guys sign all the time?”
«Well, my Deafness also has something to do with it,» Umbre cut in, «but yes, I regularly make him horny in public using sign that no one understands. He likes it. Thinks my signing is so pretty and hypnotic in and of itself.» It seemed like Levi was about ready to crawl under the table and disappear, but Umbre knew full well that Levi was definitely enjoying it, given the growing tent in his pants.
Time to take it a step further.
Umbre brought a faint glow to his paws, just enough that the other three could clearly see it, including Levi, who was starting to dissolve into a nervous wreck. Umbre kept signing, passively channeling his hypnosis into his paws for his boyfriend to watch.
«Yeah, Levi’s a real slut for my hypnosis. I mean, sometimes he’ll practically beg for it, and all I have to do to give him just a little dose of my power and he’s a drooling, throbbing horny mess who’ll do pretty much anything I say. One look his way, and he’ll simply… obey.» On the sign «obey,» Umbre’s rings pulsed, and Levi was out like a light.
Val jumped, but his attention wasn’t focused on Levi or Umbre. Instead, he was looking at the floor, where Flynn’s latte had fallen and spilled open, leaving a small but growing puddle of coffee pooling on the ground. Flynn themself had gone slack, their eyes glazed over and tinged a light blue.
The Vaporeon looked at Flynn, then the spill, and back to Umbre. “You’re cleaning that up.”
Umbre giggled. “Yeah, don’t worry.”
*****
Levi seemed preoccupied that evening.
Sure, the Leafeon was always one to be hooked on his computer, but Levi could barely look up from whatever it was he was doing. To Umbre, it was all just lines of white and colored text on a black screen, but somehow, the result was a computer program.
Umbre casually sat down next to his boyfriend and glanced at the screen. Yup. So many lines. «Whatcha doin’?»
«Final project. Procrastinated too much.»
«Looks stressful.»
Levi nodded. «Gotta make a website. It’s a lot.»
«Anything I can do? Relieve some stress? I could put you under and—»
Levi snapped his laptop shut and looked Umbre in the eyes with an intensity that Umbre had never seen before. «You know I’m more than just your slut, right?»
Umbre pulled back. «I—what?»
Levi huffed. «I mean, yeah, I’m really fucking horny for you and your hypnosis, but—I feel like that’s all our relationship is based on sometimes. I can’t just be your hypnotized slave all the fucking time, I have—I have a life, I have friends, and I have Ez, and, goddamnit, I have you! Why can’t you just be my boyfriend sometimes instead of it being just. Kink. All the time. Forever. I want there to be more to it.» Levi’s paws didn’t lower, but he stopped.
Umbre waited, but Levi didn’t move. «Is there… something else?»
Levi hesitated. «I… don’t know. Yes. I just… I feel like sometimes, you only love me for what I can be for you, an interpreter, or a hypno play partner, and I… I don’t feel like you really see me as me.» Tears welled at the edge of his eyes.
«Levi…» Umbre started. «I didn’t know you felt this way at all, I thought you liked it, the openness, the publicity, the play…»
«I do! Damnit, I do, I just… I need a break sometimes. It’s a lot.»
Umbre nodded. «I understand. I… appreciate you telling me. I’ll be more aware of that in the future.»
«Thank you.» Levi fell backwards onto the couch. «Sorry for snapping at you.»
«I’m sorry I pushed you too much.»
«It’s okay.»
«Yeah?»
«Yeah.»
Umbre stood to leave for his room, unsure what else to say.
«Please stay,» Levi signed, suddenly. His laptop was open again.
Umbre sat back down and looked at him, eyebrow raised. «What do you need?»
«Snuggles while I work on this?»
Umbre smiled.
«Always.»
