Chapter nine
Freedom through the fence
Sarah returned to the camp yawning after driving for 5 hours to get there. They had spared no expense building this 20 acre habitat. Sarah had even convinced the big wigs to let him hunt his prey by putting live deer in. Grey being the alpha of his old pack knew each trick in the book of the deer. He took great pride in his mini hunts letting Sarah watch from afar as the large muscular wolf matched the deer move for move side to side until cornering it using the perimeter of the cage. Instantly he was on it grasping it tightly in his jaws making the animal drop to the ground. His long white fangs dug deeply into the animal's throat cutting off it's air supply until it ceased to move. Only then did he release his grasp then raise his head to the cool night air and howl. It was something she had not heard him do before and it sent a shiver instantly through her spine. His song seemed to cry out sadly almost as a warning to any wolves in the area to stay away or they to shall meet his fate.
Sarah did however still find it unsettling to watch the wolf eat he did so with savage precision first gutting the beast then feasting upon it's flesh. After one hunt she approached him carefully she knew that when grey was in hunt mode his feral instincts were much higher. "Does the deer say anything to you as you are killing it Grey?" "He raised his head from the carcass and he was quite a sight, something from a Hollywood movie. For from his neck and covering his whole head was bright red blood that had soaked his grey fur. He smirked as he had done so many times before letting his saliva mixed with deer blood drip from his muzzle. He knew this bothered her and relished in it he felt that it was his one way to get to her. "No nothing is said between hunter and prey at that point there is only one thing that matters, life and death. For the deer the chance to live another day, and for me the chance to do so as well." She nodded and sat crossing her legs writing in her book every once and awhile looking up watching him eat.
Months went by of her gathering data from him. She would sit near him and he would speak to her about random things. Sometimes his thoughts were very animal and not formed at all, then other times she had to stop herself as she became lost in his words. His ramblings varied but over the long months that followed became filled with thoughts of his beloved pack and more importantly his mate. He would tell her stories of their hunts together, as well as territory wars with their nearest rival pack. Grey had come to the conclusion that he had already let the cat out of the bag to her about how animals can communicate so he thought he would share his personal past with her.
"One winter was particularly harsh for us, and we were all growing thin on our fat reserves. I knew that we were going to gather for a hunt. I went around gathering my fellow wolves but only took a few because at this time of the year the deer are slow and weak. We headed out on a hunt that we all knew could be life and death for some members of the pack. These winter hunts also always seemed to take longer, maybe because we were just tired and cold, or because the deer would travel farther away from our land.
Two days went by on the hunt with no tracks they finally one of my pack yipped to me calling me over. He had found tracks in the snow elk tracks. I smiled as an elk is a large prize that would feed the pack through most of the winter well. However an elk is much more dangerous to hunt than a deer and because I was their leader it was my decision. I sniffed the prints again in the snow and nodded one of the prints was not as deep as the others and it was that way with each step for this animal. It was lame so it would be easier to catch." He chuckled as he laid down and rolled over looking rather puppy "so here we are six wolves on a hunt after an elk that would normally take at least 12 to take down. We began following the trail in a line. Everyone thinks that wolves hunt in a fan pattern, but that is bull shit because the noise it would create could be heard for miles. So we followed in line, our paws were sore and we were tired but that it would be worth it.
That evening at dusk I heard something up ahead, it was big and by the sound of its steps it was tired like us. I looked to my beta and the others told them it was time. I had hunted for years with these wolves and they knew what that meant and moved out to my sides. The two on the outside crept ahead of myself and my beta who stayed back. The idea is to create a half c so that once the chase is on if it ran to the side one of them would stop it. Once they were in position we all crept forwards through the woods over the hill side and down the other 50 feet there he was a huge old elk with a huge rack holding a leg up.
This elk was about to die but being a large elk with a huge rack meant we had to use our heads. I stopped and there was absolute silence in the woods so much so that I think the elk heard the silence and knew we were there. I nodded and acting as a unit ran at the beast causing the elk to go wide eyed turn and run. Honestly I felt bad as it was obvious that his leg was hurt and had no chance to get away. I closed quickly for the first time had a moment of admiration for my prey. Because he was so slow I got to him first and leapt into the air landing on his back...... which was a mistake that almost cost me my life. The elk let out into a scream as my fangs dug in behind his head, then flipped his weight and neck the side. I guess he knew he was dust but figured he was gonna take at least one of us with him. In a surprising move he twisted his head and neck to the side flipping my body into the air. At the same time he lost his balance trying to pivot his weight on the bad leg, which gave out and he fell to the ground. As he fell my body flying through the air landed in the snow which was quickly followed by a heavy slam into my chest followed by pain. The others followed in with looks of horror in their eyes and quickly killed the elk cutting off his breath.
I looked down to see one of the elk's antlers pierced into my chest and a small trickle of blood leaking out on the snow. As luck would have it somehow it did not do any great damage other than taking a rib which somehow did not stab my guts. Once they got the elk ripped apart I slid out still bleeding all over and just laughed. I still have the scar to this day here look." He motioned to Sarah and she got up walking over and sat next to him. She was apprehensive as he had never let her touch his belly and she knew from reading that for an alpha to do this was really unheard of. "Go ahead feel the left side of my chest bout half way down I won't bite and don't worry about the alpha thing I am that no longer."
Her fingers trembled as she felt his soft grey fur pressing a bit felt 8 inch scar and the not one but two ribs that had been broken and healed. "Wow you are very lucky that upper rib came really close to your lung grey." He looked to her "Sarah luck had nothing to do with it, I should have died there I was stupid lunging at that elk alone I got what I deserved and somehow survived."
Chapter 11
What is love?
Sarah removed her hand from him and nodded. "Wow you do have an interesting way of looking at life grey. One thing in your life you have told me little about was your mate." Grey rolled over looking to her for a moment then growled and walked off. "Her name was Tahoe and we had been together for about two of your human years. She was wonderful a black wolf with green eyes much like your own. But......I guess it was not meant to be she will take another I told my beta after I was shot for this to happen so that the pack may go on and not break up." Sarah stood and followed Grey doing something that she had not done before. There was something in this moment that took her and she knelt by him and hugged the wolf.
For a moment he resisted the human emotion and leaned away but because he had been around them so long and away from his pack the interaction was welcomed on some level. He leaned back into her looking up and licked her face with his tongue catching her off guard. She laughed "aww I knew there was a soft spot in you grey." "Well I am grateful for what you have done in making my miserable life if anything a bit easier." She thought for a moment then a spark went off in her mind " Grey one part of our research deals with trying to find out how animals deal with relationships. We know for some animals it does not mean much and is more of a mechanical and procreate the race deal but we do know there is more to it with wolves. If you would like I can being you a female wolf and see what happens."
He pulled away for a moment as wolves do mate for life but he had come to grips that he was not going to leave this place and did miss being with others of his kind. "Well Sarah see what strings you can pull and I will accept at least being with another then we will see what happens." The next day Sarah went to itt to talk to her favorite boss. He was his usual happy self as she dropped off her tapes and note books. They did not like one another but the door Sarah had opened to the animals had kept the funding flowing into the program and with her help had opened up how the other animals were treated and were rewarded with data as well. "Grey is lonely and wants to be with another wolf to talk to and bond with." Bob laughed looking through her papers "so your dog wants a girl friend huh? Shit why not after not getting any for two years I would be pissed too. We have other wolves here go pick one and have at it."
Sarah took the elevator to the predator floor and walked along the row of cages. After talking to Grey she now shared his hatred for this place as it was so clean, so un-natural that it was no wonder why these animals were depressed. As she walked she was trying to link with them mentally, she knew they could hear her but understood why they did not respond. Soon after Grey had arrived they had received a few wolves from zoos all over the country. There were a few females but Grey had told her little of his mate so Sarah had little to go on of how to find him a companion.
She walked the row speaking out loud in her mind about why she was here and a speaker a few cages down sparked to life. "He came from the wild?" Sarah shook her head and looked up to where the voice had come from and she ran down the hall. Stopping she said yes and asked to say something again please. Again the speaker cracked "behind you silly human, my name is snow what's yours?" She turned to the cage seeing the female wolf who carried her self totally differently than Grey. "My name is Sarah I am the only one that he talks to, but he is lonely because he was the alpha of his pack and was taken away." "What is an a....lll....pffffa?" Sarah raised a brow probably looking a lot like Grey had at her many times as she reached to the cage door pulling out Snow's file. She chuckled for a moment as she read then she realized why the she wolf did not know what an alpha was. Snow was born and raised single in the Michigan zoo, born from a wild wolf that had been brought in after being hit by a car. The pups were saved but the mother was not. So the pups were raised and sent all over to zoos but Snow stayed behind and was put into a small display. This was all she had known for her five years of life. Sarah was about to change that and looked to her "I think you need to meet Grey he might be able to teach you the real way of the wolf, would you like that?" She nodded wagging her tail and looking more like a dog than a wolf. "I would very much thank you I don't like this place."
Chapter 12
Dating game
Sarah arrived at the facility with a large flat bed truck behind her. They parked and she walked to the truck instructing the driver where the entry to the cage was. He nodded putting the truck into reverse not pressing the clutch all the way making the transmission grind into gear. A stab of the gas made the truck lurch backwards as he moved the truck into position. Pulling the parking brake he got out and lit a cigarette grumbling to himself walking to the back of the truck. "Shit they did not give me the truck with a lift, hey doctor you think you can give me a hand with this cage?" She rolled her eyes but nodded and did so as somewhat crudely sliding the cage back and forth. Finally they removed the cage and supplies from the truck and she let him know he could leave now she would take it from here. "Fuck doctor you got a set playing with these wolves one gets hungry and they could turn you into a wolfy treat." She huffed at his ignorance saying nothing and waving him away. The man hopped into his truck and started it gunning it and speeding off down the road.
Sarah had grown very tired of the others and how callus and ignorant they were with animals. Even after her findings had been published little had changed in the public's eye about animals. She opened the door of the enclosure closing it behind her and looking about. "Grey come on stop hiding when I come in, you always want to play this cat and mouse game." "hmmm yes I do Sarah I am just testing you trying to figure out who is the cat and who is the mouse, use your brain don't look with your eyes look with your nose, your ears." "You are up there to my right on the rock I can not see you but I can smell you Grey." He laughed leaping from the rock and padding into view tail held high then stopping holding his nose to the air. "What is that scent Sarah I know that is not you unless they are trying some sort of strange experiment you smell like a female wolf." Sarah laughed walking to him and hugging him, it had become something that they did each time she returned to the sanctuary. "No grey it is not me it is her" she pointed behind her near the entrance of the cage. The workers had installed a large gate there used to put Grey's prey though when needed.
He froze looking towards the darkness sniffing the air squinting then looked back to Sarah. "She is not wild she was born in a box wasn't she? How sad I sense she is full wolf and has the will but is as disconnected from the wild as you were ignorant before you and I linked." Sarah sighed then growled at Grey "she wanted to come here to be with you she told me her story it was not her will that made her be brought up this way do not treat her as a dog. I have extended you that respect do the same to her please?" He nodded with a huff and turned padding away to a large rock jumping to it then sitting. "Well please by all means Sarah release this wild beast into my domain."
Sarah did not know Snow well enough yet to trust her to be in the same area as herself so she went back outside the cage to open the door releasing snow. Grey watched as the door opened and for a moment there was deafening silence then the sound of paw stepping against the stainless steel of the transport cage. Into the evening moonlight stepped a pure white form. Her fur was as pure white as any he had ever stepped upon in his lands. Her form was fit from muzzle to the tip of her long flowing tail she was the pure essence of what a wolf is. However caught in her beauty he could sense that she was tame of mind knowing none of the wolf's ways, a baby in many respects and he laughed. "Sarah please come in here for she is as tame as a kitten, she will not harm you any more than I have done in the past." Sarah had learned to trust Grey he had never lied to her and knew that if something were to change he would protect her. She opened the door closing it behind her and stepping a few feet inside then kneeling watching the two.
He watched the she wolf for a moment more then spoke "So what is your name, where are you from?" Grey stood at the rock for a moment then hoped down and standing his ground looked upon the she wolf and for the first time noticed her eyes. They were ice blue piercing seeming to look directly to his core into his soul, so much so that he blinked and shook his head for a moment before returning to his proud stand trying to hold onto his last shreds of being alpha. The she wolf stayed close to the cage feeling his presence and spoke to Grey. "My...... name is Snow I was born in a zoo then a few years ago was put into that place where they wanted me to talk. I did not want to talk to the humans they were mean to me, one tried to pet me and I bit him. I know I am not a wild wolf but I still have the thoughts of one and knew that I did not belong in that place. Sarah told me about you.... how you were alone.....how I related to you in that since. I know what it feels like to be put into a cage on display, watched and studied, I feel pity for you Grey if nothing else.
Grey took a deep breath from his chest and stepped towards the cage a few feet. "You poor creature born into a human world, fake and filled with concrete and steel. You have never known what it is to be free and if it were put upon you I bet you would be that of a dog and run to the human's side whimpering." Sarah laughed to herself listening to them knowing he was right, it was sad that in this day wild animals were being breed in zoos all over with the thought that they were keeping the species alive. But all they were creating was a beast that may look the part but in fact was none the more than a simple house pet.
Suddenly a fire grew in Snow something she had never felt, one that told her to do things....it was a glimmer of what she should be. She growled and moved forwards, Grey caught a glimpse of her pearl white fangs and looked to Sarah speaking, "hmmm maybe there is hope for this dog just yet." Snow snapped at his words digging her claws into the soft moist ground barreling towards Grey. Being an older wolf he had become a bit slow and she caught him totally by surprise. She knocked the once alpha off his paws rolling him to the ground and pinned him. He could have gotten out of the hold but let the wolf hold him to see what she was really about. Snow had a twinge of true wolf ways left in her DNA and she knew what she had done was wrong but she needed to stake her place with Grey and she felt this was the only way to do it. She ended up almost nose to nose with him under her and for the moment he allowed it which surprised Sarah who had grown to know Grey's ways. Maybe it was the fact this was a she wolf, maybe it was that he was testing her but whatever even Sarah knew this she wolf was pushing her boundaries, and at any time Grey could put a stop to it and yet he did not.
"Well maybe I thought wrong of you Snow, maybe there is a bit of wolf hidden in your bones." He did not make a move only to glare into her eyes and hope and pray that she could not notice in fact he was taken by her stunning beauty. "You are an ass Grey you think you are so special when really you are just the one that ratted the rest of us out. Since word got out that animals can talk and are of higher thought than the humans knew before, some have been tested more back at the house. You remember the concrete rooms hooked up to a computer?" His eyes went wide for a moment as he had closed out most of their voices. "You are right but you knew that it was going to happen so what the fuck why not me? I did not volunteer to be here I was quite happy where I was but I felt maybe if I spoke that maybe it would not only help my self, but others if they spoke." Snow glared at Grey baring her fangs and snapped her jaws towards his neck "you idiot all you have done is made it worse for us all. The humans now know what you have said and press the rest of us to back it up. Unless you tell them it is ok to talk they wont and will continue to be tortured in their cellls. I have been told of your story and how you came to be here and I am sorry no I can not relate because I was born not the the wild but a zoo. But even I feel a burn in my chest to be what I truly am and that is why I am here.......to learn.......to be with you."
She turned off him towards Sarah padding to her stopping just two feet away and looking back to Grey. "You know I could kill her now and the cage door I came from is still open we could escape. He rolled to his paws shaking out his grey fur then padded to Snow standing next to her feeling something deep in his gut that he had not in a very long time. "Snow that will solve nothing, we both have tracking sensors in us and the humans will just hunt us down and either kill us or bring us back. We might as well lay down our weapons and try to give them what they want. Also Sarah is special she is not like the others, it is because of her that we are both here and out of that hell. If you kill her we will have nothing, please she is a friend."
All the while Sarah was listening to them talk back and forth and knew that her life was in jeopardy. She had grown to respect Grey very much and knew what a wolf could do to it's prey, or enemy for that matter. Also she knew Grey would protect her he had given her his word and his word was the last thread of being an alpha he had to hold onto. There was a moment that dragged on for what seemed as hours with the two wolves eyes locked to Sarah's. The forest fell silent almost as thought every animal was watching the three to see what would happen. Snow tensed up growling curling a lip once again as a form of rage filled her. She ignored Grey's words and lunged at Sarah who stammered back falling to the ground as one hand drew to her waist trying to find her pistol. At the same moment Grey who had softened a bit lunged as well seeming as though both were going to kill Sarah. Grey a half step behind Snow opened his jaws turning his head and snapping down on Snow's rear leg and digging his claws into the ground. A yelp rang out as her body was stopped in mid air by the larger male and dragged to the earth. She flipped around to Grey's muzzle snapping with bared fangs but he did not relent dragging her backwards away from Sarah, his eyes had a look that had not been seen since he was leader of his pack.
"Back down she is not your enemy if you want to make a creature your enemy let it be me. She has done much good, as much as one can with her power. Hurting her will only cause more pain you have much to learn Snow, of both her and me." For a moment Snow did not listen, she had always been raised with humans around. To the point that she thought of them as friends. Since been put into this program she felt betrayed and was going to take her anger out on someone. She twisted breaking free from his grasp and turned back to Sarah leaping into the air fangs bared. Sarah closed her eyes making peace with herself as she knew that sight was after seeing Grey attack before. A whoosh of air hit her face then stopped as Grey hit Snow mid air in the side knocking her to the ground. He turned padding to Sarah sitting next to her catching her off guard as Grey had never defended her before. "She is our friend not enemy Snow, I thought the same the first time I came to this place. Although they have decided to cage us that is simply because they do not understand our ways, but they are not all evil or stupid. He looked up to Sarah with his yellow eyes then back to Snow. She is our friend and our link to how the world should be. If you end it now all will be lost and both you and myself with either be killed or tested hooked to computers till we die." Snow rolled to her paws growling still deeper feeling anger stronger then before, and her muscles tensed in her body. "I am a freak don't you see that? You sensed it from the moment I came here I do not know the true ways of the wolf, I am but a shadow of what I should be. One born from wild seed but raised to be a pet, what sort of life is that?" Grey stood walking directly towards Snow holding his head higher than hers watching her try to match him. He went nose to nose with the she wolf and growled tensing as well. "I do not want to fight you there is no cause for it, if we fight it is because of the humans and not of what we are. I to was brought here against my will but over time have made my peace with it, if anything I have this small patch to call my land. I can teach you but first you must first make peace with this human....then myself for the sins we have committed against all animals." As he spoke once again he became lost in her ice blue eyes. I see the fire in your soul Snow but I have to teach you how to bring it forth slowly."
