The Dog House, Season 2
This is another writing prompt from the furry writing group in which I take part on Telegram.
(Interested in joining us? Feel free to send me a PM for an invite!)
The focus of this prompt is to do a short story of "about 1000 words" with the prompt: "All's Fair in Love and War And Reality TV"
This prompt takes place in my established Burb Dog universe in which Humans and 2-legged anthropomorphic Dogs live side by side. Some of my followers indicated that I do a lot of dominant Dogs with rather demure Humans and suggested flipping the script. I present to you, a flipped script.
As always, thanks for reading!
The Dog House, Season 2

Ty had never been much for reality TV and he certainly didn't care for the Human-to-Human, Dog-to-Dog, cys gendered, hetero-normative approach most of the "find the one" romance shows had for their programming, which might have explained why he was drawn to The Dog House whe it first aired. He watched each episode, drawn ever-more into the chaos that reigned within a house consisting of 6 Dogs and 6 Humans trying to find a match. It only got better when, half way through the season, Bond, arguably one of the most sought-after Dogs ended up turning down two Human gals in favor of matching with his friend Jake, the dark horse Human of the show's premier season.
While the show had been over for months, most of the gossip sites and online podcasts still occasionally brought the two up since, according to rumors, the two were together as a couple, and the 'bromance' as indicated by Bond had turned into something more. Ty was jealous on a number of levels-- not just because he'd often toyed with the idea of having a Dog boyfriend, but because the relationship those two shared was the exact thing Ty himself was looking for... well... not the EXACT thing since the roles were reversed.
Having learned about his preference for men in high school, it took several more years before Ty also came to grips that he preferred a Dog partner over a Human one. In that time, he'd graduated, got a two year degree at a community college, and became his dad's right-hand at the family business. By all accounts, Ty was well on his way in life: he was successful; he was financially stable; he was healthy, mentally and emotionally sound. What he hadn't had much success in was finding someone. Perhaps it was his obsession with Season 1 of The Dog House that inspired him to apply for Season 2.
He was, of course, over the moon when he learned that he was accepted, but that was nothing compared to learning that all the contestants for Season 2 were all represented within the LGBTQIA community. While everyone agreed that Ty shouldn't have had any trouble finding a quality match in the real world, things hadn't worked out that well for him and so, after receiving the approval from the producers, he figured he'd give the 'reality world' a try. Securing some time off from his dad, Ty packed his bags, and off he went to the new site for The Dog House: a secluded villa in Belize.
Ty had always considered his height, build, and good looks to be a luck of the draw but, even though he couldn't take much credit for them, he had learned how to use them to his advantage. He was selected as one of the first contestants to make it into the house and, after that, he went into things full speed ahead. He was all in from day one, and, the first four days really took their toll; his first match was a neurotic Terrier named Mick who seemed far more interested in getting him into bed than making a lasting connection. Ty had no trouble bailing out when two new Dogs came in, and he figured his second match, a seemingly laid back Collie named Gil would work better. He did not.
While Gil was definitely much more easy going than Mick, the Collie turned out to be so relaxed and easygoing that it was hard to create a real rapport. Gil was generally happy to go with the flow and the only time Ty saw the Dog get angry was when Gil learned that smoking pot wasn't allowed on the set. No matter how gorgeous the Collie's fur or how fit he was (god only knew how seeing as he only ever seemed to laze around), Ty knew the two of them couldn't be a proper match, and so he began to meet up with the other Dogs... which wasn't entirely easy since their Human partners often shooed him away or accused him of trying to 'wreck a good thing'.
When the next set of Humans came onto the scene, Ty was a little concerned that Gil would match with a blonde haired, blue eyed, heavily tanned professional surfer from California, but the surfer was snatched up quickly by a Blue Heeler surfer from Australia; they certainly seemed to vibe. Gil did end up taking off, however, by pairing up with Cici, a real estate agent from the east coast; Gil was bisexual, and Ty was so focused on his own stuff he hadn't even considered the fact that the Collie would leave him for a woman. Fortunately for him, there was a well-dressed Rottweiler with a reserved smile and an empty seat next to him. Ty had to contend with a part time DJ named Calvin for the Rottweiler's match but, fortunately for Ty, the Rotty wasn't into loud, skinny guys with an over-the-top personality.
Over the course of the next two days, Ty and his new match Len turned out to get along well but there really wasn't a spark. Len was happy enough to engage in conversation with Ty but the Dog's 'type' was the shorter, stockier type. Likewise, Ty didn't mind Len as a friend, but the Rottweiler was a little more 'overbearing' and forward than what the Human sought in a possible Burb Dog partner. The two spent a lot of time laughing about Alphas and Puppies-- terminologies familiar to Leashers and Burb Dogs, and they promised to keep an eye out for opportunities for one another. Ty didn't have to wait long.
The next time two Dogs were introduced to the show, Ty was immediately put off by the trans male Shar Pei, but his attention was drawn immediately to Shadow, a dark Chocolate Labrador with a pale pink nose. If Ty had to guess, he would have estimated Shadow's age to be in the low 20s; Ty himself was 26 so there wasn't too much of a difference. Most Leashers that Ty had come to know preferred their Burb Dog to be taller than they were; since Ty was almost 6'4" it wasn't an impossible prospect for him since Dogs averaged a few inches taller than Humans, but Shadow would have significantly less luck since he looked like he was well under 6'... but Ty wasn't most Leashers, and he didn't mind a smaller Dog.
The final straw was Shadow's soft, almost withdrawn personality; while Ty enjoyed extroverted friends, he was self aware enough to know that he didn't want to have to compete with his Burb Dog for attention. He found it incredibly easy to walk up to Shadow, who was generally ignored by the rest of the participants. Offering a hand out, Ty made the first move. "Hey there... they said your name's 'Shadow'?"
The Labrador nodded demurely; Ty could have sworn he saw the Dog's ears blush. "Uh... yeah. Shadow-Over-Anaheim. I'm new tonight... but you already knew that, I guess."
The Human smiled, taking hold of Shadow's offered paw and he gave it a firm shake; the Lab's return gesture wasn't meek, but the Dog definitely took his cues from Ty-- it was a good sign. "So what are you looking for here? I've been here since the beginning... could maybe help you out if I knew your type... you know: help you find your way around the house, if you want."
The Dog's ears went up, reddening even further. "My... type?"
Ty had to fight not to gush at the Dog's level of cuteness-- it was far too precious. "Right. What kind of Leasher are you looking for?"
Despite Shadow's coyness, the Dog was not slow, and his follow-up answer showed surprising spunk. "Maybe... one who could help me find my way around the house?"
Although Ty preferred being the one in charge, he appreciated a Dog who knew what he want, and the Human definitely felt up to the challenge. They matched ten minutes later, and he found out that, despite knowing what he wanted, Shadow was definitely being up to getting told. He was told three times that night... and once the following morning.
