A Hoard of Scents
a Blind dragon invades the perfume stockpiles of a young princess
“Wait... are you seriously just kidnapping my perfume?”
The princess sounded indignant. Was there something wrong with what was occurring? I thought she’d be overjoyed to learn that I planned to leave her alone. Mostly.
“Uh.... yes?”
“UGH! Why do I always get the weird ones!?” there was a muffled stomping and a small “wumph” I assumed that to mean she had stomped over to her bed and thrown herself upon it. I shrugged and continued sniffing out the best of her perfumes.
Whoever she was, she was clearly rich enough not to care about how many expensive perfumes she had. It wasn’t easy to find parfum d'ornithorynque, and she had 3 bottles of the stuff just sitting in a cabinet! I’d never seen such a wasteful display in all my years.
Well, smelled. Being blind had it’s setbacks, but I’d learned to manage.
I gingerly groped her cabinet for the bottles, casting aside the more common scents in my quest. Honestly, eau de chocolat? That was among the most sickening scents available and for some ungodly reason it had been mass produced! Every single collection I’d looted had at least one bottle of the vile stuff.
I tossed the disgusting bottle out of the hole I had created for my entrance. No sense in keeping it after all.
A small gasp made me pause. I chucked another bottle out of the hole to see what would happen, and the princess let out a shocked “NO!” I turned towards her, for the sake of manners.
“You actually like this vile stuff?”
The princess gasped. “VILE!? Her’da’s chocolat riche avec un soupçon de beurre d'amande is one of the grandest scents ever created!”
I gave the princess what I assumed to be a doubtful look, then tossed the bottle in her direction. “Fine. you can keep it I suppose.” the princess began to splutter
“I can keep my own perfumes!? You’re the one ransacking my-” she suddenly stopped. Why did she stop? I lifted my head and sniffed the air. Nobody had entered the room, so what has caused a pause to her outrage?
“You’re taking that?”
“Taking.... What?”
“That!” The princess didn’t offer any further explanation, so I directed her towards my milky pupils.
“Oh. right.” I heard some footsteps, and she took one of the bottles from my grasp, “This!”
I took the bottle back and sniffed it. Ah yes, jus de crosse de castor, a grand scent that I had been looking for since I had started my collection. The princess began rifling through the bottles I had collected once again, then paused.
“Really? You only want these ones?”
“What do you mean by these ones?”
“They’re all just.... Hunting scents.”
“Hunting... scents?”
“Yeah,” she took another bottle, “My dad uses this one when hunting moose. Apparently the bulls are attracted to it.”
I took the bottle and gave a whiff. Ah yes, orignal en chaleur. A rather common scent, but it was-
Wait a minute.
I handed the bottle back, “What does the label say?”
The princess took the bottle. “Uh... female in heat #227”
I handed her another bottle, “and this one?”
“Beaver juice”
I began to panic as I thrust another bottle into her hands, “this one!?”
She paused for a moment, then read, “Platypus extract”
The sensation I felt at that moment was something I can only describe as my heart trying to collapse in upon itself at the revelation of what I had actually been collecting all these years.
I fell to the floor with a massive crash as my legs gave out from shock. Years of collecting! Years of scouring the world! All of it not for the finest perfumes but for brutish hunting musks!!
I covered my face and began to silently weep. I was a fool.
Then, a new scent was placed in front of my nose. It was the same brutish musk I’d been foolishly collecting, but tinged with an odd sweetness. It was... calming.
I felt around for whatever was creating that scent, and eventually found a small glass bottle. It was... one of the ones I had collected, I was sure of it. But it wasn’t a scent I recognized in the slightest.
I felt the fabric of the princess’ dress slide against my snout as she sat down next to me.
“What do you think?”
My confusion and recent crisis compelled honesty. “It’s... odd. Not bad, just... strange. It’s so similar to what I’ve been collecting, but also completely different.”
The princess giggled. “It’s called castor enrobé de chocolat.”
I gave the princess what I hoped to be a moment of doubtful silence. “What is it really?”
“I mixed the beaver juice with some eau de chocolat. Honestly, it worked a lot better than I thought it would.”
I thought about the name she had originally given me for the scent, then let out a small chuckle myself. “Chocolate covered beaver, huh?”
She held back a snort of laughter.
I took another whiff of the new scent. It was... nice. It has the same smells I had enjoyed over the years, but an added bit of excitement that I hadn’t known existed this whole time.
Maybe chocolate didn’t smell so bad after all.
