Messages from the Heart
A couple share a yearly tradition, bringing them ever closer as they do so.
This story was written for Serling as part of my themed Patreon request day for the month of February 2019. This month's theme was simply "Love", and the story contains romantic cuteness between consenting adults. <3
Messages from the Heart
"Evening, hon."
Freddie called out cheerily as he slipped in through the apartment door, still in the process of slipping off his jacket when a beaming dalmatian's face appeared from the living room door.
"Hey! How was work?"
Unfastening his tie, the fox grinned.
"I fought two evil princesses, fell in love with and was repeatedly ravaged by a beautiful dragon, and then gave laser eye surgery to a Gorgon."
Emily giggled.
"Ah, so a normal day then."
Freddie nodded, but before he could say anything more his eyes widened, he snapped his fingers and span around on the spot. His hand delved into one of the pockets of his jacket, and as he turned again, sweeping that hand and its contents behind his back, he grinned at Emily as she raised her eyebrows.
"Did you bring me home a Princess tooth?"
The fox chuckled and stepped closer to the woman he loved.
"Better than that. Close your eyes, and put out your hands."
Smirking, the dalmatian stepped out into the hallway more completely and did so. Even with her eyes shut though, one eyebrow remained distinctly quirked.
"Okay. But, I warn you, if I feel your balls in my hands, I'm going to marry you just so I can divorce you again."
Freddie laughed, but when he did set the object down in Emily's upturned palms his expression took on a more sincere smile, eagerly awaiting her reaction as he took a step back and looked gleefully at the dalmatian's beautiful face.
"Open 'em up!"
She did so, and after blinking and cocking her head to one side so that she could read the packaging of the small object, her eyes widened, and a soft, giddy squeal escaped her lips as she raced forward and flung herself into Freddie's arms.
"Oh my gosh! Where did you find these? I thought the news said that there wouldn't be any available this year with the company shutting down!"
Kissing the fox gleefully, the dalmatian took a step backwards only to lift the packet of candy hearts closer to her face, trying to peer through the plastic wrap and see the message on the first of the roll. For years now, since they'd been high school sweethearts, the two of them had shared a tradition on Valentines day. They would get a roll of candy hearts, open them up and feed them to each other one by one, and perform whatever sweet little act or message was written on the candies themselves. This year however, there had been no hearts in the stores. No packages available anywhere aside from some year old ones appearing on ebay which looked decidedly less than fresh. Valentines day had come and gone without a candy heart to be seen. But now, almost two weeks later... it seemed as though a miracle had happened.
Freddie stepped closer to his fiance, and leaned forward to kiss her tenderly on the side of her muzzle once again.
"It was the weirdest thing. There was this little grocery store on my walk home. I've walked down that street a thousand times and never noticed it before, but there it was, and right in the window in a big display were all these candy heart packets. The owner said something about them being a last minute, limited edition run. I checked the date codes on them, and they look like they check out. So..."
He smiled, and reached up to cup the hand holding the candies within one of his own paws.
"...I know it's a little late in the month, but, do you wanna play our game?
Emily beamed, nodded, and without even waiting for the two of them to slip into another room or for Freddie to change out of his work clothes, she began to hurriedly unwrap the packet and thumbed the first of the candy hearts out onto her palm. She grasped it between a finger and thumb in her other hand, held it up with the message facing herself, and giggled as she read it out to Freddie before stretching out her arm and gently feeding it into the fox's muzzle.
"Kiss me."
With the candy still resting on his tongue, Freddie wasted no time in gently taking Emily into his arms and kissing her. Her eyes widened, and she giggled as she felt his tongue briefly slip the candy into her muzzle, which she pushed back with her own tongue before pushing him away with a snort of laughter while he crunched down on the candy and swallowed it.
"Gross! Candy drool!"
The dalamatian teased, though both she and Freddie knew that they'd shared more than enough fluids over the years that a little saliva on a candy was no big deal. They grinned at one another, and then she handed the pack of candies over to the fox as he took his first turn giving her a heart, and its associated command.
"Cuddle me close. Aww, cute!"
He chuckled as he fed the second heart to Emily, and sighed in contentment as she stepped forward once again and wrapped him up in her arms. He did likewise, and without kissing, without speaking, they just stood there for ten seconds, then twenty, then thirty... then before they knew it, a full minute, just cuddling, hugging one another tightly and tenderly, and wondering why on earth they didn't do that more often.
The third candy, 'Hold my hand', gave them yet more time to appreciate the simple intimacy of contact without any other purpose or additions, and the fourth, 'Smooch plz!' allowed for Emily to return Freddie's earlier tease by slipping her tongue and the heart candy into his muzzle, only to squeal and bat her hands at his chest when he grinned, swept the candy away from her tongue with his own, and swallowed it whole before she could do anything about it.
"Meanie! Thief! Rude!"
The dalmatian howled with laughter as she playfully attacked Freddie a little more, only to fall back into his arms and kiss him again, giggling gleefully alongside the fox's own mirth.
"God, I love you..."
Freddie murmured as he ran his hands along the dog's back, blushing as she stopped giggling, and looked at him with those utterly heart-stopping eyes of hers.
"I love you too, Freddie. Thank you for this. Really. I... I know it's just a silly thing, but... the fact you found these candies for us? It really, really means the world to me."
For a few more moments, their eyes remained locked adoringly on one another. Then, with a soft blush alighting beneath the pale fur of her face, Emily glanced down and plucked another candy from the roll.
"Huh..."
She murmured, her face getting a deeper red as Freddie grinned eagerly, knowingly, his tail thumping against the back of his legs as it began to wag hurriedly before he cleared his throat and tried to steady himself, playing along with what he knew was about to happen.
"...t-this one says... come to bed with me."
She gently lifted the candy heart to Freddie's lips, and moaned softly as rather than just extending his tongue and taking it from her like the others, the fox craned his neck forward and gently encircled her fingers with his lips and tongue, suckling on them tenderly until he had retrieved the candy morsel.
"Funny, I don't remember that being one of the usual options. But, every year one of us seems to get that same candy."
Freddie murmured to Emily, reaching out and taking her hands into his, squeezing them gently and leading her out of the living room doorway, into the hall, and slowly back down its length towards their bedroom.
"But, I guess we've gotta keep playing the game... d-do what the heart says, right?"
The dalmatian whispered playfully, eagerly back to her lover, and her already scarlet cheeks burned brighter when he nodded, growled, and began to pull her faster, more hurriedly and hungrily towards the bedroom door.
"Absolutely."
Freddie agreed.
"Besides, when it comes to you, Em? I always do what my heart tells me."
