Moon Bound-Chapter 12
After knowing who the werewolves are, and getting caught before he could escape, what will happen to Matt? Find out!
My brow furrowed while I was moaning with a closed mouth. My eyes were open in slits at first, finding the sun shining on my face, then I slowly sat up and opened them up more wider. Right away to my surprise, I found I have woken up on a bed in a room.
I mumbled in a hoarse tone, "What...Where am I?" How did I get here? This doesn't look like my room. I gazed around, seeing there wasn't anything much in here. All there was in here was two bedside desks at each side of the bed, which I find to be a huge bed, with a big lamp placed on top of one of them. A huge dresser with a big, round mirror positioned near the window, with a few colored glass vases on it, and there was a closet across from the bed.
I felt that my throat was a bit sore and was rubbing my neck with my hand. I swallowed once and then wrinkled my face, trying to piece together what happened to me. How did I get here? I held a hand to my forehead as my thoughts were coming together very slowly. I remember leaving my house...Last night. I was heading to...The mansion, to investigate...Cat and her family. Then I...
My eyes went wide when I remembered that certain detail from that night. Oh crap, now I remember. I darted my gaze around the bedroom. I must be in the mansion, in one of the rooms, after...Well, what did happen last night? I remember one of the werewolves grabbing my neck, one with one eye I think, and lifting me off the floor and...Then everything went black. I looked over myself while still sitting on the mattress. Apparently I'm still alive, and still wearing the same clothes I wore last night. I don't look hurt, not feel it anyway. I must have been unconscious.
They...Let me live.
Wariness begun to overwhelm me as I scooted closer for the edge of the bed. I don't like this. They let me live, then they must have scary plans for me. I gotta get out of here...NOW. Before I could get off the bed, someone came in here through a nearby door. I immediately had my eyes on a figure entering the room.
It was Albert, Cat's grandfather. I breathed out in a tremble as I recalled Todd and Cat transforming into werewolves in front of my eyes. I know he looked like the same, normal old man I met before and I didn't see him transform into a werewolf, but I was very certain he is one as well. If Cat and Todd are werewolves, then all the residents in the mansion must be. Darn it, I'm in here with one of them! What does he want? I really don't like this. The old man smiled as he closed the door behind him. Albert said as he strolled to where I was in slow steps, "Ah, you're finally up."
I scooted back till I was at the other side of the mattress. When he saw what I just did, he stopped in mid-step right as he was halfway to the bed. I cleared my throat, and asked while trying not to panic too much, "What do you want?"
Albert remarked, apparently knowing what I was thinking, "And also remember everything. Doesn't feel like a dream, does it?"
I repeated in a demanding tone, "I said what do you want?"
With the smile on his face gone, he waved down his hand, "Calm yourself, Matthew...I mean no harm."
I found myself off the mattress without my eyes taken off the old man, speaking in a non-believed voice, "Oh really?"
Albert shortly replied while I was sidestepping slowly and cautiously, "I can tell you don't believe me." He nodded at me, making another step toward the bed, "Understandable, considering what you went through with us. Twice in fact. It's apparent the second time was a charm, and you now know what we are."
I narrowed my eyes when I stopped with my back facing the window, "Yeah...I do." Without hesitation, I whirled around and tried to open it so I could escape. I was on the second floor cause of how high it looked outside, only I didn't care if I had to jump out the window to get out of here. I was willing to take ANY chance right now. But I was having a hard time unlocking it since the thing that unlocks the window was hard to move. Come on! Open up!
Albert said while I still put some effort to opening it, "I told you...I don't mean any harm."
I gave up and turned around to face the guy, who actually stood at the foot of the bed now, "Yeah right! Get away from me!"
Albert narrowed his eyes too, "I can't do that, young man. Not till you know the truth."
"I do know it!" I yelled, pointing at him accusingly, "YOU'RE A MONSTER!"
He waved his hands, trying to calm me down with his words, "Stop. You're still alive, are you not? Your thoughts are merely mistaken."
I made a bold statement after flinging down my accusing hand to my side, "The hell they are! I know why I'm still alive right now AND for now! Well it won't happen!"
Before he was about to reply to that, I can hear someone's voice outside the room a little bit, and the door shortly opened up again. This time, Cat came in here, as a human like her granddad. I gasped quietly at the sight of her. Cat seemed to have a look of worry as she came to join Albert by his side. She spoke to me, "Matt." That's when she was taking a step toward me.
Right then, out of total fear, I went for the dresser and snatched up one of the glass vases. I raised it over my head, like I was going to throw it at her. I threatened loudly, "You stay the hell away from me!"
But she took another one, and pleaded, "Matt, let us explain."
"Don't come any closer!"
Albert grabbed for her elbow, stopping her with a stern look, "Catherine." Cat looked back at him, her eyes begging him to turn her loose. I think I saw my chance to leave when they looked at each other. So I ran for the bedroom door. Cat's grandfather tried to stop me too with a loud voice, "Matthew!"
Cat tried doing that as well by calling my name, "Matt! Wait!" Then when I yanked the door frame wide open and tried to run out of there, I found that a grey furred werewolf was standing guard outside the room. I screamed, and it was cut short when it grabbed my neck. I was choking in a werewolf's grasp once more while being lifted off the floor again. I recognized right away that it was the one eyed werewolf from last night. And I was in its grip again. As it carried me back in the bedroom, suddenly Gary, Deena, Todd and Autumn, all human, bursted into the room at the same time. While the werewolf growled at me while I was struggling and kicking the air with my feet, Cat got free of Albert's hand and was smacking her hands against the werewolf's furry arm. She hollered at it in desperation, "NO! DAD! DADDY, STOP!"
Jesus, it really is Elias. Figures. That's when while I was still held off the ground is when the monster's muzzle did something I didn't expect without looking at her, "Stay out of it!" That made her stop hitting him, but Cat still held a pleading look on her face. My eyes went wide at this realization. Holy crap! He can talk while being a werewolf! I groaned as his grip tightened up a bit more.
Albert hollered at him as well with an angry face, "Elias! Stop this!"
Gary helped out nearby, "Put him down!"
"NO!" Werewolf Elias responded angrily as his only working eye still locked on me, "He was gonna run away again."
Deena demanded as she stood beside Gary, "But you stopped him now let him go!"
He finally snapped his angry eye at her, "He knows too much! He poses as a REAL threat and I have to end him now!" A pit formed in my stomach from what he said, and I struggled harder to break free.
Todd tried to difuse this situation, "Don't do it, man!"
Elias replied with a teeth-baring growl, "Are you fucking kidding me? He's a silver bearer, I know he is!" That made me motionless in the air, and confused me greatly. What? What's that?
Autumn remarked with a shake of her head, "Come on, he doesn't look like it. Haven't you gotten a good look at his neck at all? He's not wearing the necklace."
Cat concurred when she backed up away a bit from her werewolf father, "She's right, I never seen him wear one."
But Elias talked back with this, "And I told YOU before that even sometimes a silver bearer wouldn't wear one of them!"
Gary added, "But he only attacked us with a poker made of bronze, remember? We've been over all this already!"
Elias's eye concentrated back on my chocking face now, "I don't care! He was sneaking around and taking pictures of us and that proves he is! Don't you see it!? He's one of them!"
I managed to sputter out some words, "Wh-...What are you talking about?"
Elias said to me, "Playing dum now huh!" He snarled, then snapped his teeth, "I'm not falling for it!"
"ENOUGH!" Albert yelled at him at the top of his lungs, "I DEMAND YOU PUT HIM DOWN! NOW!"
But the werewolf shot back, "No! We should have killed him a long time ago! Besides he doesn't believe a word you're saying to him so why freakin bother?"
"THAT'S ENOUGH, ELIAS!"
Then I remembered I still had the glass vase in my hand, and I smashed it against the monster's face with a cry. The vase broke in pieces and Elias cried out in pain, having him dropping me to the floor. When I got to sitting on my butt, I watched him holding his furry hands to his face and muzzle when he backed away to the others. Elias whined as the rest of his family were only focusing on him for a moment, "DAMN!"
I found I had another chance to escape and took it, getting off my ass and running for the doorway again. I sprinted out into a long hallway, taking a left turn without thinking which direction I should take. I didn't look back at all when I heard someone hollering for me, "Matt!" I ran past several doors in the hall till I was out in the foyer, on the second floor balcony that leads to the grand staircase. I made a run for that, and started running downstairs as fast as I could. But I accidentally tripped and fell, rolling and toppling down the stairs. I landed at the bottom step, and with a groan, and luckily no broken leg or anything, I got up fairly quickly and dashed for the double-door entrance.
When I made it and grabbed one of the doorknobs, I shot a glance back to see if anyone was chasing me. There was nobody behind me. I didn't hesitate much longer and pulled open the door. I sprinted outside, running across the grassy yard and heading for the woods onto that dirt trail I used to get here last night. Outside I was using all the energy in my legs, and it was making them tired and making my chest heaving for air. Very soon, I started to slow down to jogs. I didn't stop till it was a little bit after I jogged over the round patch of dirt with multiple paths I used before.
Now I was bent down on my knees and huffing with a pounding heart and an aching chest. I looked back finally after running for so long, and found nobody had still followed me. I absolutely got away from them. I let out a puff of relieved air. Phew...Made it. Then a curious thought crossed my mind. But...Why weren't they chasing me? Surely they would after escaping them, and surely Elias would after I managed to hurt him again. Why did they let me go? Then I was feeling nervous. I don't think this situation is over yet. I've got a bad feeling about this...
I heaved out a sigh as I caught my breath a little, and straightened myself up and looked forward. Alright...I need to get home. I shot my gaze up at the sunny sky. It's either morning or the early afternoon, so mom's probably back at home by now and worried about me. Then I remembered I took some certain photos with my camera, and that made my face light up. Oh yeah! I have proof that real monsters do exist in the world! I can make the photos and show them to mom! Oh, she'll HAVE to believe me now!
I glanced down to my chest, expecting to see the film camera dangling from my neck by its strap. I frowned when I didn't find it. Where's...Oh wait...I didn't see it when I woke up in that bed. Is it...? My hands dug in every single pocket my pants had, and it wasn't in any of them. All I found in one of them was my flashlight.
My heart raced in my chest in panic. Shit! Where's my- My eyes went wide. Oh no, they took it! They stole my camera while I was lying unconscious! I groaned out with a hand to my forehead, standing around lamenting at my failure. Great. After all that, after sneaking through the woods at night and getting chased by werewolves again, I don't have proof in my hands. I swung my hand down and went on to stroll for home. Well, nothing I can do about that now. Better get back home before mom calls the cops for me...And before the werewolves actually catch me out here.
I calmly walked on the trail for a long time till I finally made it back to my familiar front yard with my home in view. Out on the picnic table, mom was sitting around with her head down. I knew why she was sitting right there the moment I looked at her. I sighed quietly as I was making steps toward her. Well, here it comes...
My mother heard me coming and her head snapped up to see me. She cried out my name, her tone of voice sounding both relieved and worried, "Matthew!" She got off the seat and jogged up to where I was to wrap her arms around me. Mom said during the embrace, "Good god where have you been?"
Despite what I went through earlier, I made a tiny smile, "Morning to you too, mom."
She pulled her face back to look striaght at mine with a serious expression, "You think this is funny? Seriously, where have you been? I thought you were asleep when I got home, but I find out later you weren't in bed at all!"
I melted it off my lips and replied, "Sorry."
She finally removed her arms off me and calmly took in a breath, "Where the hell were you? You didn't leave a note or called and told me where you were going! I've been calling on your cell so many times but you didn't answer. I was thinking about searching for you in town to be frank."
My cell phone! That's when I remembered that I dropped it somewhere in the woods after I watched Cat and Todd turn into werewolves. Well darn, it must have rang in the woods so many times without anyone picking it up. With all the running I did earlier it's no wonder I didn't hear it. I shook my head, "No need to do that now."
Mother nodded a little in agreement, "Sure, no need. Why didn't you answer?"
I came up with the only simple explanation for it, "I think I lost it somewhere. I can't find it."
"Well I guess that answers that. And now for the last time, where did you go? Did you go to town and spent the night at someone's house?"
I REALLY wanted to tell her about my discovery from last night. Tell her what I went through and why I was gone from home without her knowing. But without the proof I lost, I couldn't say anything about it. So, I made up a white lie, "Yeah...I went to Kent's place. Just to hang with his daughter and Andy, you know."
She crossed her arms across her chest, "I bet to get away from this house and stay away from these...Werewolves, right? Are you trying to be dramatic again?"
Not this crap again. I closed my eyes and sighed, "Mom, please." I waved her off, "I'm not in the mood for this. I just want to go and take a shower...I didn't take one last night."
She just stared at me for a bit before she uncrossed her arms and asked me this, "Did you eat before you got here?"
I simply replied, "No."
"...Alright. I'll make something for you while you're in the bathroom, ok?"
I strode for the front porch of the house without looking at her anymore, "Kay." My mind lamented at my own failure again as I was stepping on the porch and getting closer to the front door. Goddamnit...If only I had my freakin camera!
*****
As the sound of the night rang outside, I lied on my bed on my side, not sleeping at all.
I let out a tiny, nervous breath. Nothing much happened since I escaped from the werewolves and got back home safely. My mom didn't talk to me much either since I got back, except I can tell she was happy I was not hurt or anything. Although she also seemed suspicious of my actions still, I can tell that from her too.
But that mattered little to me as my mind thought of the werewolves throughout the rest of the day.
I rolled, now laying on my back with my eyes staring at the ceiling. I was alone in the house again, mom leaving for nightshift once more, and I had thought of what could happen to me now. Cat and her family may have let me go, but I had a bad feeling for the whole day that it wasn't over. I was betting since, among other things, they know I do not trust them at all and their plan to turn me into one of them didn't work out, they were probably gonna come here and kill me this time.
Kinda makes sense why really.
I was afraid a little, and had some sort of thought of leaving this house forever like I did before, but I still held my courage and not let them intimidate me too much. I wasn't going anywhere. I wasn't backing down. I'll fight back if I have to.
My chest rose and a breath of trembling air escaped left it. I would, but I also know that killing them was out of the question right now, since I don't have a good weapon made of silver. How can I kill them if I don't have silver? And I can't do it alone. It's seven of them against me. I need mom or somebody else's help, but I need proof to get someone to help me.
I turned over, now lying on another side of my form as I tried to come up with a plan. I lost my camera, so that means I have to get a new one...And go through with my crazy plan in the night again. I frowned and moaned deeply at myself against the idea. No way, I'm not gonna go through that crap again. One time is enough. Besides, after last night, they'd probably be ready for me next time. Then I probably have to go back to the mansion, sneak myself in there and get my camera back. Oh, but that's also too risky! They'll get me again either way!
What do I do?
That's when I can hear a howl coming from outside. A strange one. I sat up in bed, gasping in a little fright. Oh shit...They're here. I got out of bed real fast and went for my bedroom window, to see if I could see any of them out in the backyard with Tobey. I can see my dog a little, out of his doghouse and staring off at a direction, but I didn't see any canine bigger than him.
They're somewhere outside...
I didn't want to back down in fright, I was ready fight. Scare them off if I can. I tried to think of what weapon to use this time and I came up with it.
Mom's gun.
It may not have silver bullets, but it'll have to do now. I remember it being inside my mom's drawer in her bedroom so I jogged out of mine, through the hallway and went in there. Right away I went for the dresser, pulled one of the drawers open, and found the firearm in plain sight. I may not look like the type of guy who uses a gun, but mom being a police officer taught me how to use one. It was simple enough honestly. I picked it up, then pulled back the slider hard to have it ready to shoot somebody. After hearing that loud click of the chamber, I dashed out of the room and went downstairs. I went to find the flashlight I used last night and turned it on, then went running for the front door.
I turned the porch light on outside for extra light, then yanked the wooden frame open. I shut it behind me as I stepped out on the porch, and made my way slowly out on the yard with the flashlight on in my hand and the pistol held in the other. As I took tentative steps on the grass, I breathed in and out in a little fear, trying to hold myself together as I was ready for anything that comes at me.
Then I heard a voice out of nowhere, "Matt."
I froze, placing my eyes and the light beam on a werewolf coming out from around the corner of the house. Right away I see this one didn't have one eye, and that meant it wasn't Elias. I actually noticed for the first time that there was something different about this one. I probably didn't pay attention to how different anything else looked much, probably cause I was shocked and scared before, but I saw the color of the fur on that one was totally different. It wasn't grey like Elias. From what I can tell, judging by the flashlight shining on it, it has golden fur.
I showed it a glare, and the gun by pointing at it. I snarled as I was stepping toward it, "Get the hell away from my house!"
I stopped about a few feet away from it, and saw it waving its furry hand down, calmly talking to me, "Matt, it's me. Calm down."
I demanded, "Who are you?"
The tall hairy monster repeated, "It's me."
Its voice sounded a little bestial, but it was a girl. And with its fur being yellow...I figured who it was. I asked, "Cat?"
The golden werewolf gave me a nod in answer.
Then I was getting more furious now with my courage helping me threaten her with the gun, "Listen, if I were you, and that also goes to your family hiding nearby, I'd leave right now. I have a gun!"
She tilted her head to the side like any common dog would do, "Does it have silver bullets?"
I lowered the gun down a moment, "Uh..." I hesitated to answer that at first, then proclaimed with me aiming it at her face, "Yes."
She actually giggled as a werewolf, "Heh heh...I don't think it has one of those."
I asked in a threatening way, "Wanna bet?"
She formed a serious look when her muzzle let out more words, "Not really. Can you put that away, please? I didn't come here to scare you."
I didn't do as she said, only pressed, "By scaring me you mean hurt me?"
"Honestly neither. I'm not here to hurt you." Cat's foot made a step toward me.
I yelled at her, gripping the gun tighter and ready to pull the trigger, "Stay back!"
The girl werewolf repeated with her eyes seemed to be holding assurance, "I'm not here to hurt you, Matt."
"Bullshit! If you didn't want to hurt me then you wouldn't be a monster right now."
"Do you see how dark it is outside?" She explained, "I have to be so I can see better in the dark. I can see black and white when I'm like this."
Shortly, I told her flat out, "That worries me."
"You don't have to be. I came here to talk to you."
I screamed, "Talk to me?! TALK TO ME?! You expect me to believe you just came here to talk to me?! I know what you're doing, you're distracting me so your family can come out and get me!"
I watched Cat shake her head in denial, "Nobody came with me. It's just me and you out here. We're alone."
I glanced at the woods behind her, then at the trees across the front yard and behind me. A part of me didn't believe her, but somehow I think she was right. If her whole family was out here with her, they would've ran and got to me by now.
I guess I can take her word for it. I looked back at her form, and nodded slowly, "Alright...I guess I'll believe you on that...For now." She shrugged her shoulders in response, then I asked after I lowered my weapon but kept the flashlight shined on her, "So what did you come here to talk to me about? I suppose you wanted to tell me that being a werewolf is an incredible feeling and it's a great gift to be one? And hunting things, like human beings, in a very bestial way makes you feel powerful? That I was destined to be one? And you were going to offer to turn me into one after all that?"
Cat frowned, "You REALLY don't trust me, do you?"
"You finally figured that out?"
Her frown went away, "I already had. I knew you wouldn't when you knew who I was."
"That's what I thought. I won't let you turn me into a monster, Cat."
She denied, "Matt, I'm your friend. I would never offer to do that to you."
I spat out, "Not unless you planned to forcefully turn me one anyways without my consent."
Cat protested, "No! Not even that! I'm not like that. I'm not who you think I am."
"Then who the hell are you?!" Her eyes held hurt as she stood where she was while I went on, "I don't even know who you are anymore! You kept this secret from me! I don't even know if you're this girl I met or if you are someone else entirely. I have a feeling you're the second part." She dipped her muzzle down with her ears laid back on her head, "I didn't want to believe it at first, but now I believe you lied to me about things, even about yourself. Like your shyness. I know what some of your family said, saying you hardly talk to strangers. I do believe that, but I don't believe you were really shy. Is that real, or did you mostly avoid strangers so they wouldn't somehow find out who you are by accident?"
Her hands held together in front of her, and her head turned away from me, "Well, it was that."
I shook my head bitterly at her, "I knew it."
Werewolf Cat brought her eyes back on me, "But I was shy! I was telling you the truth about that!"
"Oh really? You lied to me about where you actually lived, remember? And I think I know why really you did. And you denied that you never knew why my dog attacked you before, but you knew why all along, didn't you?"
"...I lied a little before..." Cat softly shook her head, "But not everything I said was a lie."
"Really? Was your reason why you began talking to me the truth?"
"Yes!" But then she added, "Well, actually-"
I yelled out my accusation, "I FREAKIN KNEW IT! There was more to it! You want something from me! You want to turn me into a werewolf and join your pack, that's why you're drawn to me!"
Cat replied in the same tone as me, "No, I'm talking to you because I like you!" Then her voice lowered, "I never wanted to turn you into a werewolf."
I sucked in some air and spoke softly, "I'm not sure if I believe you now. Are you seeing the point I'm making? Every time you talk, it's probably a lie, and I'm afraid of that. And I'm bettin Todd and your whole family has the same problem. How can I trust you and them after everything? How? How can I know you and your family are trustworthy? How do I know you won't hurt me?"
Cat looked at me for a long moment, then she slowly kneeled down in front of me. I showed her confusion upon watching her do that. What's she doing? One of Cat's ears twitched when she said, "Touch me."
I asked in a confused tone, "Huh?"
"...Pet me." Cat clarified, "I want you to pet my face."
I was hesitant at her request, then I kinda considered it. I put my gun down on the ground, then went up more closer to the werewolf. As I stopped in front of her, I, with a little hesitation, raised my hand toward her face...And stroked her cheek. She was practically motionless as I petted her softly, her eyes only watching my every move. Cat said while I was doing what she was telling me, "You're new living in the forest, but do you know what wild, rabid animals usually do? They bite. Bite at any person near them. I'm not doing that. I'd never think it. As far as you and everyone else is concerned....I'm thoroughly domesticated."
She shut her eyes and pressed her face against my hand, accepting and loving my touch. My brows went up when I stopped petting her and let her do that. She went on, "I may not look like her, but...I'm still the same, shy girl you met. I changed, but I'm still Cat." I finally pulled my hand away from her and backed up a step. Cat opened them up to look back at mine, then said as they showed sincerity, "And so is everyone in my family, and Todd. I'm not a monster and neither are they. We're not biters, we don't bite people and make them like us, and we don't kill them either...Even I would never kill a person."
I looked away from her, mumbling, "But...Your dad wanted to kill me."
"Yeah." Werewolf Cat nodded at that as she was standing up high on her feet, "He almost did last night, but grandpa and Todd stopped him." I glanced back at her, "And I know what he said today was horrible, even watching him lift you off the ground was scary...But he doesn't want to now. He just didn't know you. My dad may not like people, and may seem to bite a lot like he's wild...But he's good at restraining himself from transforming and killing somebody. And I'm sure he'll restrain from doing that to you from now on."
I just gazed at her, not saying a word. Cat spoke, "Matt...I won't blame you if you don't believe everything I'm telling you and can never trust me again...But I want you to give us a chance. Give ME a chance. You thought I wanted something from you, well that's all I want from you now." Then she turned her body a bit towards the woods away from the front side of the house, saying, "Well...I think I'm gonna go home. You probably had enough of me now." She turned her head to look at me, "Please think about what I said. We'd never do the things you think we do. I seriously mean that."
With that, Cat began to stroll off towards the woods. I followed her strides with my flashlight following on her. She stopped momentarily, and said the last thing before leaving, her tone fully worried and apologetic, "I'm sorry I lied before. I was always afraid you wouldn't be my friend anymore when you knew what I was...I don't want that to come true. I don't want to lose you...Because you're my friend and I like being with you." She shot a bit of a glance at me over her shoulder, "And I mean that too." She resumed her pace to the woods, and I watched her leave till she dissappeared in them.
My chest expanded then deflated after taking in a calm breath. While standing and still staring at the woods Cat went in, my mind was thinking about all the words she said, even looked back at where I petted her. She didn't hurt me. Cat was a werewolf, standing in front of me as one, but she never did while I was petting her. Not one bite.
She seemed...Sincere. I think I saw that in her eyes...And she REALLY sounded sincere at the end.
She...Doesn't want to lose me.
I frowned a bit. Should I assume everything she said was true? Was everything she was telling me the truth?
*****
In a campsite within the darkened forest, fire was popping in a pile of small logs. Sitting close to the fire was a young couple who are both eighteen years of age and seniors of their high school at Larson, a town about thirteen miles away. One was a blonde haired girl named Holly, who is basically a sexy cheerleader for the school's team. And the other was her boyfriend named Chris, who is nothing more than a athletic jock.
For being in school still, they were supposed to be sleeping in their beds at their respectable homes. But earlier in their school day, based on an idea from Chris, they've decided to skip tomorrow's day so they could do something fun together tonight and not worry about it. After all, it was only ONE school day they were skipping and it wasn't a big deal to them. Their parents would know it was, but they didn't care, and they were careful not to let them know what they were planning, especially Holly's dad who was a little strict, especially about her relationship with Chris, which he doesn't approve.
Holly, who was sitting several inches away from her boyfriend, breathed out through her nose quietly as she looked away from the fire. She pretty much thought she and Chris were going to the movie theater in town and watch this comedy they heard about on TV...And maybe make out in the car, WITH PROTECTION, behind the closed down general store that nobody owned and used for a long time, and sleep around till morning. But god she was so wrong. Turns out, Chris's idea for a good time with her...Was to go camping in the woods for a night. And she was disgruntled about it. The only reason being was Holly HATED bugs, including ants, and the woods are filled with them. She does not like this idea at all!
Holly did whine to Chris that she doesn't love it, but he argued saying it's the most romantic thing to do with someone. All she's done after that was not say much and TRY to put up with this till morning. But now, even for a long time, she wants to leave, and she's pretty much mad at him still, and that was why Holly and Chris aren't sitting REAL close together like a couple should. She still loves him no doubt, but she wasn't in the mood to show it.
Chris got up from his spot and sat closer to her. Then shortly after he leaned back his head and looked through the wide opening of the canopy, looking towards the many stars in the sky, he broke the silence, "Doesn't the stars look real pretty tonight? I don't think I ever saw them looking like that when we're in town. Least I think so." He chuckled and pointed up, "Hey, I think I see the big dipper."
Holly replied, brushing her strand of hair and seemingly not interested in the stars, "That's nice, Chris."
He laid his hand back down and looked at her, frowning, "What's your deal now?" She didn't reply to that, and Chris mentioned loudly, "Oh come on, you can't tell me you aren't at least happy for being out here! I mean really! It's nice...It's quiet..." He devilishly grinned, "And we're ALL alone with nobody around." He shifted a bit more closer, wrapping his arm around her, "I think the fire has already set 'the mood'."
But she wasn't in the mood to do what he was thinking and used her hands to get his arm off her, "Sorry, but I'm not FEELING it."
Chris gave her a rejected glare, "Well when are you? I mean we do have all night and there probably is no rush, but come on!"
"Well next time, I'll be the one who comes up with a romantic idea better than this. Like maybe go park at the back of that old store and make love there." Holly turned her head away from him, "I'm sure there would set the mood."
Her boyfriend stated, "Why do you think we went to the woods? Everyone always goes to that spot. It's too cliche. There's not a lot of private places to have sex in town, you know." He motioned his hand across the campsite, "I mean look around. We're literally all alone here. Not much of a chance of getting caught when we're out here."
The hot cheerleader brought her eyes back on him, "We probably wouldn't get caught there too, moron."
Chris shrugged with his hand, "Well do you want to take that chance? I mean what if your dad was out looking for you? He does hate me."
"So am I." Her arms were crossed and she looked away again with a dissaproving face.
Chris put on a smile shortly after that, "Holl...You don't mean that." She did not say anything, not even look at him. Not too long later, Chris melted it off his lips and slowly wrapped his limb around her shoulder again. Then he apologized, "Okay, look...I'm sorry this isn't what you wanted. It's just I wanted to do something different with you, and let every boob in town do whatever they want." Holly relaxed a bit, uncrossed her arms and went to stare back at him. He said, "I know you think I'm an idiot right now...But I really did it just for us."
Holly dropped down her gaze in a little shame. Shame that she's mad at him for trying to do something nice for both of them, "Yeah, I know. It's just I hate bugs and I feel like they're crawling all over me."
He formed another smile and playfully said, "And possibly having their way with you. That's why you feel that. They're all attracted to you like me!"
She actually slugged him in the chest for that, "EWWWW!" He laughed and she found herself giggling for the first time since she got out here. Then her happy expression melted off and she explained, "But seriously, I feel that bugs are all over me. But that's probably my imagination."
Her boyfriend nodded adamantly, "You're right, it is."
She at first gave him an annoyed look, then wiped it off and went on, "And other than that, it feels a bit cold out here now."
Chris made a playful frown and gestured towards the fire, "And that's why I've built the fire!"
Holly shot her head to the right and nodded with a smile, "AND I admit, I was pretty impressed you've built the fire and the tent. You didn't do too bad, I think."
Chris mentioned, "You can thank the boy scouts for that."
Holly then said with her head dropped down once more, "But it still feels a little chilly."
Chris was trying to make another move as he pressed his side against hers, "Maybe I should help warm you up."
Holly looked at him with a tiny grin, "You don't want to give this up, do you?"
He shook his head then said, "I keep believing this is our only chance of doing this, so what do you think?" He let out a breath, "Holly, I know you hate bugs and it's a little cold tonight, but give this a little more time. You haven't got used to being in the great outdoors like me yet."
Holly stared at him for a bit, then she was saying this, "Well...Maybe you're right. I don't get out in the woods all the time."
"Oh I know that and you see my point."
She held up her chin and closed her eyes, "Fine...I'll try not to complain about it anymore." She opened them, looked back at his and said, "And besides, it is only one night, right?" Then she gave him a bit of an angry look, "Unless you want to stay here more longer than you originally planned."
Chris replied to that statement, "That's if we have to hide out here from your father."
Holly giggled deeply, "Not a bad idea. And...I think I can put up with that if it happened."
He giggled as well, "Now you're talking like an outdoors girl."
She narrowed her eyes, "Don't push it, it hasn't happened yet." They softened up and she said, "Hey Chris...I'm sorry for acting like a bitch."
Chris said with a shake of his head, "Oh, forget it, babe. And let me promise you that this will never happen again...Unless papa wants to kill me. Deal?"
Holly smiled, "Deal."
That's when the jock snuck in for a kiss on a cheek. Then a moment later, his lips were making their way down to her neck and were planting kisses on it. Holly moaned with her mouth closed from his lips touching that spot. He said, "You said you were chilled...Well, I think we should head in the tent and warm up. I'm feeling cold too." He planted another kiss.
Holly pushed him away a bit, "Cool your jets. I'm not ready yet." He sighed, putting on a rejected look. She chuckled and kissed his lips. When she pulled back she said, "When the fire's out a bit and I feel REALLY cold...You can help me out."
He finally unwrapped his arm off her and shot his head to the side, "Oh, alright." Although he agreed to it, his tone showed that he did seem a little impatient.
The hot chick rubbed his shoulder in a playful way, "Hang in there." She sighed as she looked up at the stars. He joined her gaze too, and soon made a smile as he was enjoying his quality time with her. Holly admits inside that she was starting to like this now, with all the tension about her issue with bugs brushing off her for now. Now a part of her wished she should have done this sooner. Holly said somehthing after staring at the sky for a short amount of time in silence, "You said you saw the big dipper? I don't see it anywhere."
Chris chuckled, shrugging his shoulders as he did't take his eyes off the sky, "I don't know much about constellations. Besides, I was just joking around."
"Oh."
Holly heard him hum a bit, "...But do you know what the stars got me thinking about now?"
She asked in response, "What?"
That's when he did something so unexpected, "AHOOOOOOOOOWWWLLLLLL!"
His howl made her shriek and jump off the ground. Upon standing, Holly shot daggers at him from her eyes and hollered angrily, "What the fuck?!" Chris still sitting was laughing at her reaction. She screamed, "What was that for?! You scared me!"
He defended, "Ah, come on, you weren't supposed to! You were supposed to howl with me! Like the coyotes that howl in the night!"
Holly, still angry and surprised by his act, corrected him, "They only howl at the moon, not the stars, you idiot!"
"So? Who cares? This is OUR night and we're supposed to howl like we own it!" He let out another idiotic howl.
"CUT IT OUT!"
After taking a deep breath, he did it again as loud as he could.
She got a little amused judging by her smiling, and she smacked his arm for that, "SHUT UP!"
But then, right when he was done...It happened. A howl, that didn't come from Chris, emerged. That made both Holly and Chris go quiet, then they both quickly went to stare at the woods since it apparently came from outside the campsite. And they were just silent after it was gone. Holly felt nervous, cause to the girl it didn't sound like it was far away. It was close by. And that howl...Sounded strange. She never heard something like that before.
Holly without taking her gaze off the edge of the campsite gave her boyfriend a whisper, "Did you do that?"
Chris replied in the same tone as hers, "No way. I wouldn't sound like that."
"What was that, a coyote?"
He shook his head softly, "Didn't sound like any coyote I heard of."
Holly narrowed her eyes, "Well it didn't sound like a dog either." She finally put her eyes on him, her tone apprehensive, "Chris, I wanna get out of here."
Chris looked at her as well and said, "I think we're safe here. The fire will keep it away."
"I don't care. Something doesn't feel right. I want to-" Her ears heard a faint sound from the woods. Like a footstep. After snapping her sights at the noise within the trees she asked, "What's that?"
Chris followed where she looked at with his own gaze, "What?"
"I heard something..." She pointed out with her finger, "Over there."
Her boyfriend's eyes glued to the forest for another moment, then he shrugged, "Probably a deer."
Then Holly thought she heard something in there again, and pointed it out out loud, "There it is again."
Chris glanced to her with a bit of a annoyed look, "I told you, it's probably a deer."
She would have agreed, but she didn't think so. She had a creepy feeling they were being watched...By SOMEBODY. She can feel it in her bones. Holly replied, "I don't think it was a deer."
He changed his expression to confusion, "What are you talking a-"
Holly cut him off when she snapped her eyes down onto him, "I think somebody's watching us."
Chris narrowed up his, "What? Holly, come on, there's nobody out here but us. Are you getting back at me for-"
"No, I heard someone walking in there."
Chris only stared at her a bit and then he shot his head to the side, "Deers walk and make noises too."
She adamantly replied, "Chris, I FEEL someone is watching us."
He argued, "Yeah, who? Your dad? It can't be your pops. He doesn't know where we are."
She shook her head, "I don't know, but someone's out here with us."
Chris sighed, shortly nodding three times before standing up on his feet and saying, "Alright...I'll go take a look and make sure no one's there."
Holly got worried by the idea, "Are you sure? I think we outta just get out of here."
"No way. I'm checking it out."
"Chris, I don't like it, what if it's a crazed maniac running loose?"
Chris smugly stated with a smile, "Well, if there was, I can take him. I'm not afraid of someone who's crazy. They're probably not smart enough to fight a tough guy like me."
Holly asked with a little hesitation, "Well...Do you need a flashlight? I didn't bring one with me."
"I didn't bring one either, but I won't go too far. I'll be fine."
She felt more nervous for her boyfriend despite his assured statement, "...Ok. Hope you can fight whoever's in there without one."
"Relax, Holl. There's probably nobody else here." Chris began to stroll around the firepit. He said over his shoulder as he walked away from the burning fire and his girlfriend, "Be back in a minute."
Afterward he soon went into the woods. Holly at first can still see him, but as he walked deeper, he dissappeared in the darkness. After the young girl slowly lowered herself to sit back down on the ground, she let out some trembling air. Holly waited around for about five minutes, and she was getting real worried. He should have been back by now. Holly really didn't like this...
She slowly stood up, and called out for him, "Chris! Are you ok?" There wasn't a reply from the darkness. A pit was being made in her stomach as she still stood and waited. Then, even though she didn't want to, she decided to venture in there and look for him. She hoped it was just a joke. After walking past the fire in tentative steps, she strode through the same spot her boyfriend entered, and walked further away from the burning light. Things were getting darker as she went further and further in the forest, but thanks to her eyes adjusting to the darkness she can still see where she was going a little bit.
Holly hollered for Chris again, "Chris? Chris, where are you? If you're doing this to scare me well it's working! So come out please!" Her gaze wandered around the dark area, not finding a sign of her jock boyfriend. She called for him once more, "Chris...Chris? This isn't funny!"
When she made another step forward, the front of her foot kicked against something. Shortly, Holly looked down to try to see what her foot bumped into. On the ground in front of her, she can barely tell that it was her boyfriend. He was lying on his back...With his throat ripped out, his right arm torn off and missing, and blood all over. He seemed to be killed by an animal. A loud, horrified scream left her chest. No! He's dead! Then Holly spun around and ran away, not wanting to end up like him.
Sprinting back for the camp wasn't hard for her since the light from the fire guided her back. Very soon she came back and immediately darted for the car not far from from there. Holly ran and ran till she found the vehicle Chris drove them in parked near the edge of the highway, facing the woods with its back towards the road. She pulled the car door open and moved herself onto the driver's seat. After slamming it shut she was searching for the car keys, but couldn't find them in every spot she looked.
Holly was in total distress as she was running her hands through her hair and tears were falling down her face. She muttered, "Oh god..." Chris must've had the keys. Her mind ran with images of what Chris's form looks like now. She can't go back and get them! The animal that killed him is probably outside somewhere!
Now what does she do? She can't drive off, and she can't call for help cause she left her phone at home.
What does she do?
Then something fell on top of the hood of the car and she had her attention on it. Right away she knew what it was.
It was Chris's missing arm!
The girl screamed in terror, and it pushed her to getting out of the car and just run home as fast as she can. Holly quickly stepped out of the car then dashed for the highway. But when she was about to rush past the back of the car, something came out from behind it and she stopped short in front of the figure. At first, judging that it was on two feet, Holly thought it was another person. A VERY tall one at that. But noticing up close, she realized it wasn't human at all. It looked like some tall, hairy wolf creature on two legs. Like a monster.
She couldn't believe what she saw!
She screamed once more. Before she was gonna escape, the monster shot out its hand and snatched her throat, then she was lifted off the ground. Despite the hand gripping around her neck, Holly was letting out high pitched screams left and right while kicking her feet. The monster snarled as hatred was shone in its eyes. Holly kept screaming and screaming...Until she was finally silenced by sharp teeth piercing her neck. Her eyes went wide and she was trying to take one gulp of air, but it wasn't working.
Very quickly as the monster's teeth dug deep into her neck, her legs were motionless and only hanged above the ground, her arms went limp, and she was letting out one last, quivering gasp.
Then her vision was growing dark as her life slipped away.
