Ceryx Expedition Species Log #2: Royals (Addendum article#1)
A continuation of the species log for Ghillie Spiders. Now, with greater information, we can explain the role and abilities of their noble caste to the greater galaxy. And the remarkable potential they may hold.
Ceryx Xenozoological Species Log#2: Ghillie Royals Addendum
My colleagues and all relevant readers. Today's issue is both unexpected and exhilarating. An expansion upon the knowledge of the Ghillie Spiders as they are known, and more importantly, the enigmatic nobles of their species. It appears our initial assumptions were wildly inaccurate to the true magnificence and marvel of their leader caste.
Through a willing agent implanted with subtle subdermal sensory equipment. And my own repeated interactions with the artisan I will now refer to as Kio (See my personal note on artisans in the last article). We have made remarkable strides in both diplomacy and discovery when it comes to the highest eschelon of the Ghillie Spider species.
While this log may be relatively brief. As an addendum it will add much-needed and fascinating information to the first species to be catalogued. Consider this to be nothing more than an extention of the first. As of such, culture, morphology, and breeding regarding the species as a whole will not be expanded upon to any degree outside of relevance to the current subject matter. Any pertinent species data is available within the initial log.
{DISCOVERIES}
With recognition to the sacrifice and duty of agent Clover. Whom the ghillie selected as a prime desirable target for breeding with the help of Kio. We have been able to discern a remarkable amount of information about the ghillie nobles and their capabilities.
A quick refresher of their revised description will be provided.
The "Royals" as it has been heard they refer to themselves. Stand on average 10-12 feet tall with 3 pairs of arms and legs. The lowest pair of arms often hugging their midriff or "reserved" unless greater articulation is needed. They uniquely have a single pair of eyes with discernable yellow pupils, and are the only caste to sport full prehensile antennae with short soft bristles fanning to the sides. Unlike the artisans, whose color seems to brighten or pale in color. The royals have uniformly dark or pitch-black flesh.
The towering arthropods have an enormous collar of supple golden or copper-toned fur around their necks and shoulders. Alongside large crests of the sensitive bristle-like hairs along the scalp, chest, forearms, and abdomen. They are almost devoid of chitin entirely. With only their scalp, mandibles, collar, shoulders, sternum, upper back, and feet having any at-all. Otherwise the nobles are relatively bare, flowing figures and soft spongy flesh with firm muscle underneath it exposed to scrutiny besides a gloss of oils that keep it moisturized.
Remarkably we've learned that they actually take the time to style their fur and bristles to stand out from one another. Even using their remarkable silks to adorn themselves or trophies they keep. Each royal apparently having a strong personality.
Which brings us to the new and relevant information. Firstly, the resin.
While it was always known the resin and silk of ghillie spiders seems to increase in quality, and to some extent, properties depending on both castes, individual, and diet. Royals all have something truly remarkable about their resin. It is a uniformly golden or polished bronze in colouration. As if one has spun threads of the pure metals themselves. It is not just conductive, but piezoelectric! Any form of impact or touch generates a small signal that the royals, being highly attuned to electrical activity, can pick up on. These threads are subtly woven throughout the ever-expanding hive. Effectively designating the territory of each one by the distance their signals can reach before degradation beyond interpretation. Allowing them to effectively monitor the hive and its activities by simply remaining in contact with the appropriate threads. Even sending their own pulses with which to command lower castes or communicate.
This sensitivity is further enhanced by how the royals utilize their resin with their own bodies. Certainly they spin gorgeous gowns and robes of the substance. But more interestingly, they coat themselves in the raw resin and allow it to dry to their forms. Forming an incredibly durable and extremely conductive flexible latex-esque wrap that takes on a tone not dissimilar to polished copper. A natural armor they casually shape how they wish to stylize and adjust to specific tasks. Each royal standing tall as an ebony giant seemingly sheathed in flexing precious metals.
This electrical manipulation extends past their remarkable resin and silk. Through Clover we discovered just how truly attuned to bioelectric impulses they were. Firstly, Yurn, the royal that currently owns and frequently breeds Clover. Immediately detected our subdermal equipment, even communcating with it through simple contact with our agent. Immediately aware it was some form of spying device, he seemed to take pleasure in sharing some subtle secrets of the hive. Both through demonstration, and observation. Afterall, he had his trophy.
Disturbingly, this control of theirs extends beyond mechanical. While in-contact or even close to Yurn. Clover found the royal could assert total control over our agents motor function. The extent to which they can control the nervous system of a being is unknown. But their sensory capabilities allow them to perfectly diagnose stress, injury, seemingly even emotion and body language to a degree beyond human ability. Yurn taking the time puppeteering Clover for our observation, but also for his sexual gratification.
The latter seemingly completely unnecessary if truly frightening and impressive. Afterall, the musk and pheromones that seem to pour off the royals is so intense as to be palpable and intoxicating. Inducing a constant arousal and admiration of the subject, Clover has described it as oppressive and addictive. Pungent and heady, bitter and invigorating. The musk potent enough to stain a victims senses and make them utterly subservient. Eager for breeding or even simple contact. In little time our agent became entirely complacent and obedient. Yurn offering them his scent and pheromones as a reward for good behavior. Even without coitus, Clover could spend hours in the royal's arms or under his abdomen without complaint.
For what it is worth. While domineering, Yurn appears to be a dedicated lover and master to our former agent.
As for common behaviors. As assessed earlier, royals adore music. Often fashioning their own instruments, singing to themselves or for others. They will readily experiment with new instrument designs and place great stock in any individual with muscial talent or find themselves drawn to harmonic frequencies. Through a currently unknown process, they are even capable of fashioning their resin into an actual metal. Regrettably we have been unable to acquire samples. But this unusual resin-metal is oft used for their instruments or to reinforce their burrows and dens.
By simply offering an antique record device that would play several classical songs from our culture. Yurn was utterly jubilant. Enamored with the variety of sounds and instruments that could heard through the recordings. The royals have since softened towards diplomatic engagement and negotiation. At the very least finding merit in our musical choices and instruments.
This cultural exchange, as it were, has at the very least stirred their interest in further cooperation.

While this is the extent of our current information. It has been recommended by both the Captains of the Third fleet, and the Churrlin Council of Elders. That the ghillie be inducted into the greater galactic community and placed under protection order to ensure the prosperity of their species for future study.
Our current interests with the species are:
>Deconstructing and understanding the nature and properties of their highly conductive resin.
>Understanding the means and extent of their electrical control. It has been observed they can not just control machines, but corrupt machine code. Alongside controlling the bioelectrical signal of organic creatures.
>Learning more of their breeding cycle. And the potential mind-control or inhibiting abilities of their incredibly potent pheromones and musk. (As a subject to Kio's pheromones I can attest they are potent and unnaturally alluring)
This concludes the addendum report. We are happy to provide answers to any questions fielded towards the expedition.
