Harpies & Angels

9 year old Natalie Baker was riding her pony behind her hulking friend's huge warhorse. It was a beautiful early fall day and the two were exploring a valley of dead trees and desert. Natalie watched James' massive wings twitch as he gently pulled Thunder's reins. Both equines came to a stop and James dismounted his steed, slipping a feedbag on him and patting him. Natalie hopped off her pony and imitated her huge friend, who smiled warmly at her as he came over, bearing a picnic basket.

"Oooh, snacks?" Natalie wondered, as was her newfound habit she wore her cardboard angel wings and halo and the armor and swords James had just gifted her; she spied he wore her gift on his wrist, a name bracelet.

"Sure is honey! Lonely made chicken sandwiches for us." He said excitedly, Natalie knew he meant his anthro mule girlfriend, whom Natalie rather liked; she was kind.

"Yes. Over here." Natalie commended, her easy-going big friend didn't mind and spread a blanket for them. Natalie sat and James went to join her.

"You look pretty today!" He gave a graceful dramatic bow, spreading huge wings.

"Ever so pretty am I." Natalie agreed, not shy like blushing James or Lonely. "James...um...what's that?"

James whirled, the two huge swords on his back clanking in their holsters. A flock of 10 harpies rapidly approached, screeching and laughing callously. They were beautiful, but, the two friends were about to find, unfriendly.

"Why...what have we here." One screeched.

"Looks like a little girl who wants to be an angel, and a real big one...yes, a tanker, from his build."

"He looks like 400 pounds of meat to me." Another chirped, salivating and licking her lips to show fangs. James withdrew his swords and spread his wings and puffed out his chest, stepping in front of Natalie protectively.

"Now ladies....we mean no trouble, we'd be happy to share our food." James said generously, unless his hand was forced or it was just sparring, he didn't like to fight females. He would to protect his precious Natalie, he thought, eyeing the bird women uneasily.

The lead harpy laughed.

"Oh...we prefer something...fresher. Get the girl and kill the male!" She screeched. James snarled and beat his broad chest, swinging his swords, which sang as they flew, but he held back, still feeling guilty and torn cause these were women.

"To me!" He yelled, his wings crackling with lightning, which struck his wrist armor; all 10 of them clawed and bit at him, his tanking skills working. Natalie bravely swung at them as her friend tanked and held their attention.

"Leave him alone!" She shouted; they picked her up in their claws, trying to abduct her.

"Nat! Put her down, ow, hey!"

The women bit and clawed James, yanked at his halo and wings and tried to lift him but he was too heavy for them. His white and blue wings bled in places and he was all scratched up. James grabbed both the harpies that had Natalie and pinned them by their necks to a tree, his huge hands encompassing their throats; he could have killed them easily.

"Goddamn it! I don't want to hurt you, but you need to leave her alone!" James roared, panting in anger, lightning striking all around from his newfound magic. The harpies didn't take him seriously, they pressed their assault, pushing both friends to the ground. James scrambled over Natalie and wrapped her in his muscled arms to protect her, and the women turned their savagery to his broad muscled back.

"Ahhh, fuck!" He snarled angrily, clenching his arms in rage he fought still.

"James, oh no!" Natalie cried, sniffing. The sound of feathers filled the air, but it was much heavier than the sound of the harpy wings. The friends heard a male voice mutter Latin, and James covered Natalie and grimaced as a fire spell swept over them and the harpies, who shrieked in agony and fled.

"Be gone, you foul bitches! Really now, you ought to have crushed their necks, I'm disappointed." James and Natalie gasped, for they knew that voice. They helped each other up and turned. Wearing a black satin hooded robe and carrying a new staff, there stood James' sorcerer father, Abaddon, his black wings shifted, tiny flames dancing over them. James' own newly born lightning magic crackled in anger at the sight of his estranged father, but he didn't attack him this time, merely bit his lip and looked away in a huff.

"Oh...come now. You're very welcome." Abaddon mocked, leaning on his staff. "And what...pray tell, are you supposed to be? Imitating my son with your little cardboard wings? Oh, this day just keeps getting better!" Abaddon picked up Natalie with 1 arm and threw back his head and laughed at her.

"Hey, don't you talk to her like that! I'll..." James started to snarl, unsheathing his swords and channeling a ton of lightning into his bracers, he stormed forward, his father flicked his wrist and a fiery rope wrapped itself around James taughtly, including his lips, tying him to a dead tree.

"Be quiet, boy." Abaddon mocked, half angry, half amused. James struggled and tried to talk.

"Why are you so mean! You're such a big jerk face! Let Jamesy go!" Natalie shouted, trying to pummel Abaddon, who smirked.

"What an amusing child. Is that any way to talk to the mighty sorcerer who saved you from the harpies?" Abaddon taunted, shaking her as he still held her 90 pound frame by one arm.

"I don't care, I hate you! You left James and his mom when he was just a baby! You're evil and you suck!" Natalie spat. James gave her a caring look, then an angry one at Abaddon and went back to his futile battle with the magic rope binding him.

"Well....what do you know about it? Huh? Miss smart-ass? This day gets better and better, I must admit. Foolish girl!" Abaddon threw Natalie down roughly like she was nothing, and the impact knocked her cold. Now James was truly angry. With a roar he broke the rope, Abaddon whirled and recast the spell, this time with 4 of them, tying and gagging him roughly.

"No you don't, boy! Your little friend will be just fine, but she ought to watch her mouth." Abaddon watched the fury in James's eyes, which had turned gold instead of their usual grey in his angry magic. Abaddon grabbed James by his groomed bearded face roughly, seeing his big son struggle and try to shout, hatred in his eyes.

"And you ought to stop running yours, little boy. What do you know about anything? What do you know? I ought to teach you a lesson, lucky for you I'm in a good mood today. Next time...zip your lip!"

Abaddon shouted in Latin and cast a healing fire spell on Natalie, simultaneously releasing the 4 ropes from James. With a dark laugh he wrapped himself in his wings and was enveloped in fire and he vanished.

"Natalie!" James cried in worry, she was in pain from his father's healing spell.

"Uh...Jamesy." she said, passing out again.

"Oh Nat, sweetheart! Please hold on honey, oh I'm here, sweet Natalie, hang on honey, I'm gonna get you to a healer!" James was frantically trying to heal her and fly at the same time, so upset by her pain he didn't realize she'd be fine. His pet bunny comforted her as his huge wings frantically bore them to another angel he knew, a healer, who would later explain his young friend would be okay.
