Chapter Nine

By

Furry Sith Lord

Shinto stood as still as he could as a man held a long flat string against his body. The man kept changing the positions as he stretched out the white string and Shinto saw some lines and writing on it but had no idea what it merant. The female that was looking after him as of late kept telling him not to move but he was getting tired of the man and the string.

At one point the man wrapped the string around his lower belly then used a finger to hold the place on the string where the ends met. He then told mom what sounded like a number but it still made no sense to him.

The man started holding clothes next to Shinto and he watched the man curiously as he wondered what he was up to. Mom then led him to a small room that had a large curtain across it. She handed him a pile of clothing and said a word he understood.

“Change!” She ordered and he was pushed into the room. He removed all his clothes and searched the pile for a new pair of underwear. When he saw that it was missing he put his old pair back on. Then he put the new clothes on with some difficulty because these were not the normal clothes he was used to wearing.

“Mom!” he called out and she entered the small room and looked at him strangely. “Help.” he said and she saw the difficulty he was having and she showed him how to put the school uniform on.

She brought him to stand in front of a mirror and she smiled as she looked at him. He didn’t like the new clothes because they felt tighter on him that his usual set. He started pulling on them to see if they would loosen up. She started fussing over him as she checked to make sure they were the right size.

“Maybe a size bigger.” She remarked but he could only understand the word ‘bigger.’

“Shion,” he said, hoping his brother would come rescue him from this place.

“He’s at work dear.” Mom said. He heard the word ‘work’ before but did not fully understand it. He had watched television and on some of the shows the people said the word work them they wore odd looking clothes as they fed and took care of other people and sometimes got in trouble and made messes. He would hear people laugh when it happened but he did not find it funny.

Taking a better look at the clothes he was wearing he was beginning to think he was being given clothes so that he could go to work. Would it be his trn to make a mess and people would laugh at him?

“No work! Shinto no work!!!” he exclaimed as she turned and stared at him.

“What are you talking about dear?” she asked but he was too busy folding his old clothing. He saw her sniff them and smiled at the smell. Shinto had taught him proper hygiene and it was showing since he worked hard daily to be clean.

“No work!” He repeated then he began to gesture like the people on the television do when they are working. It took her a moment then she caught on and chuckled to herself.

“Shinto.” She explained firmly. “No work. Shinto go school.” She then pointed to the clothing. “School clothes.” She said as he looked down and stared at them.

“School.” he said as he sat down and raised his hand. She smiled and nodded to him then began to pat his head the way Shion does. The boy seemed content as she muttered to herself that he still was not speaking well enough for school. She was afraid he’d be thrown into a special needs class and dismissed as being of any value. Her reputation would be ruined if they thought her child could not function properly.

I just got home from work and managed to sit down when my cell phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Hi this is Baron,” the kid replied and I leaned forward surprised that he called me.

“Well, haven’t heard from you in a while.” I said.

“Yeah I’m finally ungrounded.”

“Ungrounded? Well that’s a new one.” I remarked.

“Ah come on man, give me a break. I just wanna know if Shinto is mad at me cuz I haven’t been around.”

“Actually the opposite. He thought you didn’t want to be friends anymore.”

“Ah man, That ain’t it! I’ve been grounded and couldn’t get out to see him.” Baron whined.

“I get it. I’m sure Shinto will be happy to see you.” I replied.

“Will you guys be at the park tomorrow?”

“Well…” I then went on to explain what has been happening and how I now have a new job. I waited after I finished telling him everything to hear his reaction. I was afraid our calls were disconnected until he finally replied. I guessed he was thinking things through as thoroughly as he could.

“Well… shit. I guess that means I’ll never see him again.” Baron said glumly.

“What makes you say that?” I asked as my mind was already forming a plan.

“Duh, without you who will bring him to the park?”

“You on curfew tonight?” I asked.

“Yeah,”

“Then get to his house as fast as you can. I'll be there and we’re gonna talk to his mother and get this straightened out.” I ordered and he quickly hung up. Time was wasting and he only had a few hours before he had to be home.

We arrived at Fen Ju’s home and I loudly knocked and we waited until she arrived and opened the door. Her eyes narrowed as she saw us and folded her arms across her chest.

“Can I help you two gentlemen?” She asked coldly.

“Hey Shinto!!!” Baron yelled then we heard running and Shinto pushed her out of the way as he hugged Baron. Baron rolled his eyes but let him then after a few seconds he pushed him away.

“Easy kid, you’re wrinkling my clothes.” Baron said but Shinto just smiled back overjoyed that his friend was back.

“Baron… miss you.” Shinto said. I saw Fen Ju give me the side eye as we observed them.

“I missed you too buddy.”

“Wanna play?” Shinto asked as he removed his shirt.

“Only a couple because I can’t stay long.” he replied.

“Easy. I beat you fast!” Shinto said as they ran into the house to play. Fen Ju turned and glared at me.

“Well out with it.” She said and I sighed.

“Baron called me. He wanted to see Shinto and was afraid you'd say no. So I came along.” I replied.

“Wanted to see Shinto or had other ideas in mind?” I rolled my eyes and faced her after I crossed my arms across my chest.

“They seem perfect for each other. Shinto provides Baron with a challenge and Baron helps him learn to be a normal little boy. You plan to send him to a special school but we both know he’ll be dumped into the retard class,” I tried to explain.

“Don’t talk like that!”

“I’m sorry, but we both know it’s true. This is all you know now, because I have a new job and how things turn out are none of my business. You’ve been dumping everything on me and now that you’ve gotten an unfavorable position you’ll have to deal with things by yourself. What kind of class they put him in is whether he can function or not. Teachers aren’t gonna waste time and resources if they think he’s special needs. You can’t buy success for him no matter how much you spend.” I stated firmly and she glared at me half amused.

I turned to leave and heard the boys shouting from Shinto’s room. It was obvious they were having a good time together but I quickly looked at my watch and feared Baron getting in trouble

“Baron!!!! It’s getting late!!!!” I shouted and I heard them running towards the entrance as Baron was apologizing that he had to dash off. I saw Fen Ju watching my reaction as I saw the look of disappointment on Shinto’s face. I then firmly grabbed Baron’s arm and spoke to him but making sure Shinto could hear me also.

“Tomorrow.” I ordered firmly and Baron nodded. We then looked towards Shinto and he quickly replied in a satisfactory manner.

“Tomorrow.” he repeated and I pulled Baron towards my car so that I could get him back home on time.

He sat next to me as we drove to his place and he told me the streets he had planned to beat Shinto next time they played. I tried to engage him and tried not to knock all the wind out of his sails but I could easily see the flaws in his planning.

Shinto was just better at playing than he is and he could not see that. He kept thinking there was a trick involved when there is none. The only advantage I could think of was that being raised by wolves helped his muscles develop more than an average person’s.

“You’ll see I got everything figured out.” Baron said as we pulled up at his home. He quickly jumped out and did not see me wave to him as he ran towards the entrance. I saw his father open the front door quickly and looked shocked at how fast Baron ran inside and the old man turned and glared at me but said nothing as he closed the door behind him.

I let out a huge sigh of relief hoping that Baron wasn’t gonna get punished. He still had plenty of time to spare but it was not worth taking any chances. I spent more time hoping that I had made an impact on Fen Ju that maybe she would listen to reason. With her it’s hard to know for sure
