Cousin Amber- Shopping Trip

And we're continuing on with our examination of Mark. Like one of the things I found really fun to think about. That just because Super hero X has super strength, that super hero Y also having super strength does not mean their powers work the same. It just really allows for far more diversity of characters to have this disparity. Just think, if done right you could have two people with completely identical powers in regards to function, but if the mechanisms behind them are completely different, then how they fight and train would have to be drastically different.

"So bad news is your power is nothing like Jet's. His creates energy to amplify his attacks. Your body as far as I can tell is behaving normally, just with the strength generated amplified by who knows how much. Unfortunately, that likely means that barring finding an enchanter that can make you something that will drain your strength you never will be able to just live a normal, ordinary life," she says, noting how his entire being deflates. "That said, there is one thing I want to try that I think could help. I noticed that your legs have just as much strength as your arms, but you aren't jumping hundreds of feet every step and I think that's because your feet have gotten used to a level of fine movement that you can walk. I have an idea on how we could try and train you to lower that threshold for your arms. Like I said you'll probably never be able to interact with things thoughtlessly. But if it works should at least allow you to hold stuff."

"Like I said, I'll do anything," he responds quickly.

Amber sighs, "though I guess I need to figure out what to have you do as payment." He looks rather uncomfortable about her statement, probably having not brought any money by himself, not that she would need their money. "Okay, that should do. This place is a wreck. Some of the wood smells rotten and will need to be replaced. But hiring construction guys to go through it all just to tear down the bad wood would be a pain and a half. So for your payment, you're going to follow me as I do another sweep of the house and I'm going to point out wood that will be needed to be completely replaced and you're going to use your strength to smash the bad wood."

"How will I know what's bad wood and good wood?" he asks.

"Simple," she points at the eye in the middle of her forehead, "this is quite useful for that. So I'll be simply checking all of it and pointing you at the stuff that will need to be repaired. Might not be able to get at all of it right away, can't compromise the building's integrity too much."

"And me?" Chris asks.

"Well I'm sure you mainly want me to help with having you run a circuit using my eye as an aid. But I need to buy some things that I really need for this place. So after I get him all set up, you're going to come with me and we're going to do a bit of shopping. There are a lot of things that I'm going to need on a very fundamental level and you know this place far better than I do. You help me with all that and carrying some of the bags and I'll give you access to my eye for a few hours, at least. Might call one of you two for a small matter here and there if I find anything else that needs some extra work. Sound good?"

Chris shrugs in response, probably as good as a response as she's going to get. She heads on up to the front door to open it up to let them all in. Mark follows, looking somewhat shy at the prospect. "What if while you're away I need to um," he says sheepishly, gesturing down towards his pants.

"There is a giant hole in the side of the building right now. Plumbing works but I wouldn't drink the water. Should be easy enough for me to create a path for you to use one of them and I'll just flush it when we get back. Unless you're saying you need help to do that. Because I'm not going to."

"No, no," he says quickly, blushing slightly. "I've figured out enough of a way to take care of relieving myself by myself."

The statement does lead her to think that her course of action for him might actually pay off in the end since he clearly isn't always destroying his pants and other things. Shrugging, Amber heads into the building an begins walking through all the corridors. She uses her eye to basically see what happens when he destroys each part of the wall. And not really having much expertise in regards to telling good wood from bad she is mainly doing a lot of guesswork. And she can't even really do everything. A lot of which creates structural issues on the building if she were to have everything done all at once. She'll just have to repair some of the walls and then get the rest broken down. If she can get a decent enough income going she could probably even go so far as to hire an inspector to go and mark what all walls need to be replaced. She'll eventually need one to look over the place eventually anyway. There's just no way she'll be able to find everything wrong with the place, even with her abilities, simply because she wouldn't be able to tell what is good or bad. And hopefully the Core doesn't try and screw her over by having much more and practically require her to start the building again from scratch. But once she's done she leads them back outside. Still having some of the boxes that she had bought for her training of Chris she grabs the largest one and puts it together. Then teleports herself and the box to the nearest junk yard, which takes her a little while to find it in the city and fills the box with just random bits of metal and then teleports herself back to the alleyway.

"Okay, so while we're heading out for shopping, here's your practice." She stands right next to it and places your hand near the top half of it. "Put your hands up here and try and push it to the other side of the alley. If the box tips over, just put everything back in, drag it back to the start and try again. Everything in here is literally junk metal. I don't care what happens with any of it. If you make it to the other end just take one thing out and go again. Trick here is to learn how to use a gentler and gentler touch."

"Oh, you mean like those bottle people?" Chris adds.

"Sure. But as I said before, I don't think I can ever get you to the point where you don't have to think about not destroying things. But as you don't destroy your pants it means you are capable of delicate work. The trick is just getting you to the point that you can easily dial back how much strength you put into things. This box will help with that. By holding the top half of the box, if you push too hard it'll tip over. Push light enough to just overcome friction it'll move. And as you remove junk from it, the amount of force you need to not tip it over will drop as well. I think if you can ever get yourself to being able to reliably push just the empty box up and down without tipping it over, then you'll be able to interact with people and objects without immediately destroying them."

He nods and gets to it, pushing on the top half of the box and immediately tipping it over. She had half feared that he would have simply punched a hole in the side of the box, tearing right through the cardboard but apparently that wasn't the case. Amber nods to Christopher and they head off to the nearest mall so that she can get what she is looking for to at least start on making that building into a home. Thankfully for her, this day is a work day and thus most of the people are away at work as she is heading to the store. Meaning far fewer people gawking at her appearance. She wonders idly how many that don't know who she is likely would call the police informing them of a monster being present. How she wished that she still had full access to her ring. But there was enough of that for now. She was good on clothing, she needed furniture more than anything. There would probably be a few cots here and there in that building, but she wasn't sure how much she could really trust them and given her current situation she felt she deserved to have a new bed that worked best for her. Beyond that she'll definitely need water filter, an electric stove since she's not sure she can really trust any sort of gas stove without having first fixed up the place. Some tools to start rebuilding the house, though the wood and whatnot could wait. And in some regards, most importantly, food and a fridge to put it in. She could probably make do without a lot of them, but the ability to eat things not just takeout or fast food was necessary.

Even though it's not technically time for his training she decides on their trip to the mall that she'll give him some time to train after all, only on the condition that he not run into anyone. And so she opened her third eye for them as they walked the streets and whenever he found a large enough gap to justify doing so would use his speed to try and navigate the crowd much faster than she is going and then simply waits for her to catch up. She could simply teleport to the store but doesn't really feel any need to rush at the moment. And teleporting to catch up with Chris could potentially backfire. When she's in that other space, people in this plane of existence don't get the advantage of her third eye. Granted the time she's out is extremely short, especially for such short hops. But without conditioning him to be okay with the blips in her ability, he might misjudge and cause harm.

Most of the things she really needs on the outside could be handled with starting at the hardware store and they make full use of it. Amber has to really give Christopher credit in that having been through the tour twice already he's already gotten some ideas she never even thought of yet, like getting a large tarp to cover the giant hole in the wall until they can get it fixed. And she takes a lot of his advice to mind. When she has enough to start with and has at least enough stuff for the major problems they go and wheel their cart to the checkout counter and she pays for it, though she definitely gets a lot of looks and Christopher is definitely looking a bit strained in carrying everything they have purchased so far. But it's a simple enough fix for the time being. Once they get everything paid for they drag everything outside and she is able to simply grab everything and teleport it all to her home. When she does she sees that Mark has actually made a bit of progress and seems to have managed to get halfway through the alleyway with the box, though there doesn't seem to be any junk taken out just yet. Nodding slightly she jumps back over to the store and the two of them continue shopping.

She will not be surprised if her bank calls her on the sudden change and increase in purchases. But that's to be expected. Though she is reminded from that thought that she'll probably need to have all of her legal documents changed for that to be her primary residence. Their second trip through the mall is to go for smaller things that are non-perishable. A water purifier, some blankets and pillows, a towel, stuff like that. Food is the last step as it'll keep and is the least likely to be desired just sitting out in the open. When they get to the grocery store she lets him use her third eye again, but only with the restriction of anything he breaks he's paying for with his own money and she will abandon him here if he can't pay. He takes it to heart and is very cautious about moving, seemingly interested in more just using the ability to gauge distance, dashing to the end of the aisle and back without any maneuvering as quickly as he can. For food she's picking a decent enough variety of things, some of which gets an expression of disgust from Christopher. Though she's not exactly picking for things to be non-perishable, other than things she's planning on using in the next day or so she isn't grabbing anything that needs to be refrigerated to stay fresh. There's no guarantee that they'll be able to get the fridge working today, or even tomorrow. She knows that at least some of the outlets are working, but how well is another matter. She also makes sure to grab a few large, empty jugs to store water in, a necessity until they can get a built-in purifier installed.

Once they are done it's time to head back. This time, however, she doesn't just bring everything back using her ability, but instead goes about heading back by walking, giving Chris to hold some of the bags and practice moving around with his ability to see how well he can handle moving with objects that will have their own momentum and extra weight. She makes a note that perhaps later on it might be interesting to have a bunch of water balloons tied to him and see how he can handle that without popping them. It wouldn't be something that would be exactly helping him, but it would be interesting to know.

Thankfully they're able to get back to her home without any real issue. There's a few instances where Chris almost ran into something to ruin the food she had grabbed, but since she was watching things as well, she was able to grab him just before he tried to make the dash attempt. Unfortunately, he did start using it as a bit of a crutch near the end of their walk, becoming more and more aggressive in his attempts and trusting in her stopping him. Which was useful for him, but did definitely mean that she had to spend a lot more time making sure that he didn't run into anything. And when they do finally get back she finds that Mark is no longer in the alley, though his box has made it to the other end of the alley, with one piece of mangled junk sitting crushed right next to it. She grins slightly as she quickly figures out what happened at least in regards to the box and why he isn't there, though where he is she'll just have to figure out later.
