Violet City "The City of Nostalgic Scents". Even the phrase sounds nice. The city itself looks almost like a town. There aren't any apartment buildings in sight, only a Pokemon center and scattered rustic-looking homes. Near the gym stands a tall tower. I'd heard stories from my grandma, when I was a kid, that the tower is home to the Sages. She said that they were people who could look into the future. For a while, I believed her. Now, I see the tower as a beautiful structure.

"Welcome," I hear a voice say as I walk into the gym. Looking up at the wooden beams that hold the roof up, I see a shadow. "I'm Falkner, leader of the Violet City Gym and holder of the Zephyr Badge." He jumps from the beams and lands in front of me.

"I'm Will, and this is Phoenix," I say, introducing us. "We are here to battle your gym." Falkner laughs and motions for us to follow him. He leads down a small hallway. Phoenix puffs in frustration, and I look back to see her just barely squeezing through.

"I must apologize. Most trainers who challenge here usually have smaller Pokemon, so I never got around to heightening the ceiling," Falkner says. Luckily, the hallway is shorter than I thought. It opens into a taller, much wider, room. Falkner claps his hands, and I see stadium lights turn on in a big *HUM*. The light reveals a large rectangle of grass in the middle of the room. I realize that this is the arena that we'll fight in. Falkner points to the left side of the arena. "Stand over there, please," he says. As I walk over to my side, I get a better view of the battlefield. Blue lines surround the perimeter of the grass rectangle. A battle referee steps onto a podium as I stand in a small square.

"Gym Leader ready?" The ref points to Falkner.

"Ready!" Came the reply."Trainer ready?"

"Let's do this!" I yell. The battle starts, as Falkner throws out a pokeball. It opens up and a Pidgey appears. Phoenix gives a loud roar and steps onto the field. "Phoenix, use Flamethrower." Phoenix rushes at the Pidgey and unleashes a strong wave of fire from her mouth. Falkner tries to get Pidgey to dodge, but it still takes the blast. I'm not surprised that Pidgey is knocked out from that attack. Phoenix is strong. Falkner is shocked by how quickly his Pidgey was defeated. He sends out a second ball, and it releases a Pidgeotto.

"Pidgeotto, use Aerial Ace!" Falkner quickly says. His Pokemon ascends into the air, and then dives straight down. Right before he hits the ground, Pidgeotto raises his wings and charges at Phoenix from just above the ground. Phoenix tries to dodge, but Pidgeotto is too fast. He slams straight into Phoenix which sends her flying back a few feet to the ground. Phoenix grunts as she stands back up. The Pidgeotto tries to attack again, but as it comes closer, I tell Phoenix to counter with Flame Charge. Immediately, she surrounds herself in bright flames and collides with the oncoming Pokemon. Phoenix is pushed back only a little bit, but Pidgeotto is launched into a wall.

"Both of Falkner's Pokemon have been knocked out. Will of Azalea Town is the victor," the ref declares. I congratulate Phoenix and walk over to the defeated gym leader.

"That is one tough Charizard you got there," he says. "I've never seen a battle go that quickly. Which is why I am proud to award you the Zephyr Badge."
