hello, here is chapter 5 of my Pokemon fanfiction. i been in a writing slump lately and it became a struggle to write a story. so when today i finally felt like i could write something decent, i went full force on it.

I may have written it too long, but before i realized it i was mostly done with it. i apologize for that and what i made as a rush ending.

please comment on my work.

Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap. I repeated that in my mind as I looked in horror as Dustox glared at us from the burned remains of its cocoon. Cascoon evolved into Dustox, I wasn’t quick enough to beat it. Slowly the Dustox started to beat its new wing and started to hover a little. Okay we need a plan, but for now,” Poochyena we need to leave.” We turned away from Dustox and ran into the forest. Since Dustox just evolved, it will take some time for it to learn how to use its wings. We need what little time we have to put as much distance between us as possible.

We ran through the dark forest, dodging branches and roots with the little light provided by the moon in the sky. I slowed down when I thought I put as much distance as I could with Dustox. “Okay, we should be safe for awhile,” I leaned against a tree, trying to regulate my breathing. Poochyena didn’t look even tired from all that running. It won’t take long for Dustox to learn how to move around using its wings. We need a plan to deal with that. I tried to put together all the things I know about Dustox.

1: Dustox is aggressive. Both times as a Wurmple and Cascoon, it was the one to attack first. 2: during each of those attacks, he was in a tree. Tactic wise, this allows it to stay out of range with physical attacks and attack its opponents from afar. I doubt it is going to change tactics now after it evolved into something that can fly. Poochyena doesn’t have any moves that can attack from a distance, so a head on fight is out of the question. If only we can knock it out of the air, we might stand a chance.

I pulled out my pokenav and opened the map. Oldale town was a bit off, but walk able distance from here. Even if it goes against what I believe, I need to get to Brendan. He is the only one with a pokemon who can attack at a distance. “Poochyena, we are heading back to town. Keep low and try to avoid being detected.” Poochyena barked once, which I took to mean ‘yes’.

When we got to town, the first stop was the pokemon center. Brendan might have gone back there to contact the Rangers. The lights were still on, so I entered, “oh sir.” The nurse was surprised I returned.

“Hello, sorry I just left,” my mind wonder a bit, “how is Treecko?”

“Your Treecko is just fine. All the poison is out of his systems and he is resting.” I signed a breath of relief, “anyway where is the other one?”

“Other one,” Poochyena was still besides me.

“Yes, the boy you left with earlier.”

“Wait he didn’t come back?” the nurse shook her head, “but Brendan came back before me, I thought he would be here.”

“Nope, you’re the only one to come back from what I know.” Then he is still in the woods?

“Thanks for telling me.” I thanked her when the entrance door open and in came ran, “Brandon?”

Brendan was out of breath, cradling Mudkip in his arms. “Innes…what are you?”

“Forget it what happen to you and Mudkip?” I tried to touch Mudkip but I felt a shock when I put my hand on him.

“It was after we separated. I went back to contact the rangers, but we got attacked.”

“Attacked by what?” it couldn’t be Dustox, could it?

“It was by some trainer. When he saw me he sent out…something.”

“You didn’t see the Pokémon?”

“No, I remember feeling something from behind me then it was lights out. When I woke up Mudkip was like this.”

The Nurse came with a stretcher and placed Mudkip on it, “we have a 10-94 prepare for treatment in five,” the nurse said as she took Mudkip with her.

“Any Idea what caused it?”

“No, but it must have been an electric-type. When an electric type paralyzes a Pokémon, there are little bit of electricity still covering the body that can shock a person.”

“So the trainer used an electric-type?”

“I don’t know. What about you, how did go on your end?”

“A disaster,” I said, “Cascoon evolved into Dustox. I was hoping to use Mudkip, but he is in no condition to fight.” This night is a complete disaster, this can’t get any worse. At that moment, I believed Lord Arceus heard my thoughts and went ‘challenge accepted’ to prove me wrong. I heard a small bang from outside. When I went out to see what caused it, I saw a flash of light hit the ground in front of me and the blast sent me back inside the Pokémon center.

“Innes,” Brendon rushed to my side, “are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m good. Whatever it was just barely missed me.” Poochyena started to get agitated, barking at whatever was outside.

The nurse from earlier rushed in, “what’s happening?”

“Some Pokémon is running wild outside, it nearly hit Innes.”

In the background, I heard more small explosions and the sound of people screaming. I don’t know why this Pokémon is just attacking the town, but it is going to hit someone eventually, “We need to fight it.”

Brendon looked shocked, “What? Did you hit your head from the blast?”

“Brendon, whatever is out there is running wild out there. If we don’t do something, people and Pokémon are going to get hurt if not worse.”

“Do you even know what Pokémon it even is?”

“I’ll pass that bridge when I get there,” I turned to the nurse, “is there a place where you can evacuate the injured Pokémon and civilians?”

“Yes, we have a storm shelters here in case of emergencies.”

_ _“Good,” I removed my bag I was carrying, letting my shoulders much needed relief. “Poochyena and I are going to try to lead the Pokémon away from the center. You two get everyone you can into that shelter and call the Rangers.”

“Hold on, why are you going to lead it away?”

“As far as I understand, I’m the only one here with a second Pokémon. Plus the Chanseys are needed here to help with injuries. Also, if it is who I think it is then all the more reason for me to be the bait.” Brendon and the nurse looked confuse at my last statement. I took a deep breath, “alright, let’s go Poochyena.” We both bolted out the door, ignoring the word of the people we left behind.

The outside was not too damaged. I saw the craters of where the attacks hit, but I think that was the worse it did so far. Not far off was the Pokémon in question. I figured as much. Green wings covered most of its back, but even from behind, I could see its purple head and antennas poking out.

“Hey, you looking for me,” I yelled. Slowly, Dustox turned to face me. I caught its attention, now to taunt it. “I am amazed you did all this, for a knock-off Venomoth.” I moved when I said the last word, which was a good thing as Dustox launched an attack at me in that moment. If I had been a second slower, that attack would of hit me. That attack had to be Psybeam. But how is it learning moves so quickly? This Dustox was dangerous, all the more reason to get it out of here. “You had better aim as a Cascoon.” I ran again, avoiding another Psybeam attack, I really did make it angry this time. I ran into the woods, it was the best place I can think to lead it.

We ran through the woods, avoiding both branches and the Psybeams being launched at us. We had to stay close enough not to lose Dustox but far enough to avoid its attacks. I don’t know how long we ran, but at some point I notice something was wrong. Dustox has not fired a Psybeam for an entire minute. The time between the attacks were roughly ten seconds apart. I turned around to see Dustox was no longer behind us. I slowed to a stop trying to figure out what happen, but then ‘it’ happens.

Pain seared in my chest. It felt like something was crushing my ribs and organs. I tried to get air into my lungs, but whatever air I got in just came out immediately. I knew this feeling all too well. This was the pain I have known for years. Of all the times I had to have an attack now. I cursed at myself for not thinking this would happen. I crouched down, the pain still in my chest. Poochyena came up next to me. Keep calm Innes, you need to calm down. The faster my blood pumps, the worse my pain is going to be.

“Dustox,” an ominous voice said over head. Dustox had found us at the worst possible time. Poochyena lunged at Dustox with a Fire Fang, but Dustox just flew out of the way like it was nothing. Before Poochyena could get another chance to strike, Dustox covered Poochyena with some web. Poochyena howled in pain when it covered him. There was only one move that I can think could hurt him like that, Electrowed.

I was stumped. Poochyena was out and I didn’t have any other Pokémon on me. When I set my eyes on Dustox, it had the most unsettling grin on its face. All I could do was curse at myself for everything that happened and prepare to meet Arceus soon. I haven’t been a trainer for more than one day and this is how it is going to end. If I had one regret, it is that I left my parents on bad terms. They’re going to blame themselves for what happened to me for years. I resigned myself to my fate. Arceus, I know I never was any bit religious and you have any reason to refuse me but…make sure Treecko and my parents have happy lives after this.

Just before Dustox released its Psybeam, it was attacked from behind. Whatever attacked Dustox sent it flying over head and its Psybeam into a tree. When I looked at my savior, my feelings were a bit of joy and shock. It was Treecko and he was okay.

I felt tears ran down my face from the joy of Treecko being okay, but the look on Treecko was much more serious. Behind us Dustox was getting back up. Treecko placed itself between me and Dustox and got into it battle stance. That’s right; we still have to take care of Dustox. I picked myself up and pulled out the pokedex. It immediately went into battle mode and info filled the screen. “Alright Treecko, we need to beat Dustox for everyone back in town, you up for it?” the grin on his face said it all ‘challenge accepted.’

“All right the first move is ours, use Pound.” Treecko rushed up to Dustox and swung its tail at it. A glance at the screen revealed two things: one, Dustox was female. Two, it was still recovering from our battle from earlier. Dustox flapped its wings franticly creating a strong gust of wind. “Treecko hold on!” Treecko crouched down to try to keep from flying away. Okay Dustox used three different moves so far: Psybeam, Electroweb, and Gust. She still has one move she haven’t used yet, better finish this up fast. “Okay Treecko use Quick Attack.” Treecko’s body glowed as he lunged at Dustox. Despite her attemps, Dustox was not able to dodge Treecko and got hit. If we keep this up, we can win.

Dustox flew high above the tree line. She is using the fact she can fly to her advantage. From the sky she let lose a barrage of Psybeams and Electrowebs. I grabbed Poochyena and ran for cover. If we try to attack directly, then she would blast Treecko before he got close. If only Treecko can get close without being hit. I had an idea, “Treecko into the tree now.” Treecko seemed to understand and disappeared among the branches of the closest tree. I can picture Treecko move among the branches getting into position. If we don’t time this perfectly, we won’t get another chance.

I’d visualized everything in third person, my position, Dustox’s position, and where Treecko is at that moment. Without a second to lose I step out into Dustox’s sight, “this is the end, Quick Attack!” out from a tree came Treecko to attack Dustox from her blind stop. Both of them fell to the ground from above the tree line. But there was a difference, Treecko got up after hitting the ground while Dustox remained down. I stood there for a minute in silence before it sank in. when it did a wide grin was spread on my face, “We did it! We beat Dustox!” Treecko climbed on top of me, sporting the same kind of grin as mine. Poochyena barked happily at our victory and danced a bit as well.

After all this happiness, we realized something; we still had to take care of Dustox. Dustox was only knocked out. There is no telling what she will do when she wakes up. While I contemplate what to do a voice rang out, “is that the one?”

I turned around and saw two people. One was an adult male, slightly tan and wearing a Pokémon Rangers uniform. The other one was Brendon, “yeah, I am positive that was the one who attack the town.”

“All right,” the man passed me without a second glance focusing only on Dustox. “Wow, you did a real number on her. That just makes my job much easier,” the man pulled something out from his pocket and tosses it at Dustox. When the object touched Dustox, she turned into light and entered the ball. The ball then glowed and disappeared before my eyes. “Alright that is one thing taken care of,” the man turned towards me. I felt so tired that I didn’t feel the man hit me or hitting the ground. I just want to sleep.

I was in some room when I woke up. The first thing I notice was my head was pounding. The second thing was my Pokémon was cuddled up with me on some bed. I sat up in the bed trying to understand how I got there when the door open. The nurse entered, “oh, you’re awake.”

“Yeah,” I groaned, “where am I?”

“You’re in one of the Pokémon Center’s trainer’s room. We have lodging for traveling trainers to use when they want to spent the night.” The room only had the basic necessities, so I didn’t doubt her. “I leave brunch on the table for you.” It was then I realized the nurse was holding a tray of food. She placed the tray on the table and left. Wait what time is it?

Treecko and Poochyena both woke up, but it was easy to tell Poochyena was not a morning Pokémon. After eating the food I threw on some spare cloths my parents packed and peeked out of the room. A Chansey was standing out in the hallway holding a note pad with something written on it. When you awake, please come by the front desk. Nurse Joy. So here name is Joy? “Okay I am on my way.” I went back into the room and pack everything up. After making sure I had everything, I returned Treecko and Poochyena to their balls and head out.

The lobby didn’t seem any different from yesterday, “Oh Innes.” Nurse Joy called me from over the counter. I approached her, “did you sleep okay?”

“Yeah I guess, although my head is pounding.”

“I am sorry to hear that.”

“That’s okay, you needed to see me?”

“Yes, I wanted to thank you for what you did yesterday. I apologize for not having a reward for your work yesterday.”

“No problem, I really didn’t expect to get one anyway.” I glanced around the lobby, “Where is Brandon?”

“Brendon left already. He wanted to wait for you to wake up, but said he needed to leave as soon as he can.”

“Did he tell you why he needed to leave?”

“He said something along the lines of ‘I need to get there today’.”

“Get to where?”

“He didn’t say. But he might have been talking about Petalburg City.”

“Peyalburg City?” another place I haven’t heard of.

“It’s a city west of here. It takes a couple of hours to get by walking. There is also Rustboro City, but that is much farther away from here.”

“By how much?”

“I say maybe at least four to six hours if you don’t get lost on the way.” That sounds pretty far.

“Alright, thank you for telling me.”

“You’re leaving already?”

“Yeah, I need to catch up with Brendon. Thank you again for letting me spend the night here.”

“Yes, please come again.” I walked out of the Pokémon center into the afternoon sunlight. At least I know where I am going to next.
