Chapter 7: White Fox
Imported from SF2 with no description.
As much as Art wants to be useful in the journey, he can’t do anything when we are in Segara’s wagon. He seems disappointed, seeing that nothing can be done while journeying to another town. He occasionally looks down at his things before looking outside with a bored face (at least how a human’s bored face looks like). Segara doesn’t seem to mind him in any ways, but I feel bad for Art.
It is not long until we reach another Badland town that looks big and self-sustaining. It looks as big as Orwallis, but without walls and is divided by a river. Since Orwallis is not as big either, this city does not look like it, too. The name of this town is Deserted Heaven. While it does not look deserted to me (especially how it is very crowded and bustling with people), it does feel so out of place, seeing that our car can’t find in so many of the roads.
Aside from the road, the place is mostly pedestrian. Cars and other big vehicles are parked outside the town and we are forced to walk inside. In the end, we reach a café, where we are given some good things to eat and drink for the hot summer day. Apparently they use the same currency like we do, since it is nationwide. I am quite surprised that there is actually a town that is here, in the middle of a wasteland.
Segara leaves us at the café while he claims to try to find information. By this point we are trying to get closer together, especially with Art. Art is a good person, and is a little bit shy, knowing that he has been living alone for so many years since his friend and father figure passed away. I am not surprised when he said he is 19 and will be 20 some months later, but I am pleasantly surprised that he actually have a combat knife with him all the time, which is forged in his own workshop and given magica bead at the base of the hilt to hunt monsters. Of course, for a pure-blood human like him, he needs someone to help him recharge the bead, and there was no Mythars or Magi living in his town. Despite of this, he lived his life hunting normal animals, not monsters, since he is not brave enough to risk himself hunting monsters, even going so far as to say “There is no glory in killing monsters, just suicide.”
That is kinda heavy, but ironically, that is true. This is real life, not some story book fantasy (nope, I’m not being sarcastic…well, at least I am when I am doing this inner monologue and is talking to you guys). Instead of hunting dragons and catching a unicorn, we tend to let them roam free because without them, this ecosystem will go with a bang. There are some magical plants only wild monsters can eat, and some preys only dragons can fight and hunt. This is the circle of life in this world, with a fantasy twist that seems to be our reality. I really wish we are not in a situation like Trueman is, but considering my awareness, we really are.
“This kinda sucks,” said Art slumping on the table. “I can’t get to hunt in here. I thought being able to go on an adventure is nice, but…”
“We can occupy ourselves with something, right? Here, let me charge that bead for you.”
True, we are currently struck with boredom. After escaping imminent death three times (all because of the father-daughter combo), I feel like being in the safe line is not an option anymore. We need more action than just sitting on a bench in an outdoor café watching people walking around and do things like normal humanoid beings.
Just when I am thinking about anything to do after we get out from this town, there is a young child who approach us. Upon first glance, this child looks like a normal human being, but upon closer inspection, I can see that this child is a Hidden Beast. He might look human, but his ears, eyes, and tail tells me that he is a human-fox mix. Something tells me he is trying to find us because he is being chased, considering that he is wearing a collar and he looks scared.
“Hey, kid, is there something wrong?” asked Art.
“N-no in particular. I’ve just finished running and…I met you guys. Those adults said they will pay me well if I find you.”
At that moment the three of us realize that it is a trap, and this child unknowingly sold us to the enemy. But then Art takes our hands and jump to the side just before a sudden attack comes from somewhere we cannot even think of.
That kid is a Discord User!
“I should have known this kid is not normal the moment I saw his collar,” said Art.
“Eh? What’s wrong with that collar?”
“Just look at it. Isn’t it covered with runes?”
Yes, now that Art mentions it, the collar is covered by runes of some sort, which strike as weird since I can’t even feel any magic aura coming out from that boy.
As the boy approaches, we try our best to see where another attack might come again, but he does not do anything.
“Oi, Art…we gotta run away.”
“I…got a problem right now. I’m trembling…”
What?! He looks like a badass just now and now he can’t move? This is just like a dog who cannot fight against something they know that is exerting dominance to them, but then…
I can’t let them die because of a…
“Hey, mister, where are you looking at? I’m right behind you.”
The little boy’s voice quickly turn to something sinister and deep-voiced, and before I knew it, my instinct acts quicker than I do. I conjure up a shield in front of the attack and roll away with Art. Liza followed suit, and then I see something is not right with the user.
Just a moment ago I thought I am seeing a Hidden Beast child, but then, now I am seeing a full-grown fox? Am I seeing an illusion? Was that attack just an illusion? Illusion or not, another attack makes me sure that it’s the real deal.
After I dodge it, I see the mark by the floor. It chips the floor’s ceramic tile. Something like this would have been a strong dragon Mythar or a bestial Anima, but like I said, the child is not even close to a beast. He’s a fox boy…or maybe…
Without thinking much, I grab Art and starts running away from the kid. Liza helps me carry the smaller Art with us, and run with our more agile digitigrade legs. The attacks becomes more ferocious and they start to involve citizens. We know that this is not their problems, so we decide to split, not knowing that in this unknown place, we might as well be sitting ducks to the yet unknown danger.
I run with Art, not looking at my back for a moment. It just begs for time to let us find ourselves hit a dead end. There are walls around us and I don’t know where to go. Just as I am trying to find another way around, I see the child, standing in front of us like an innocent kid, but man, how can’t I mistaken those greedy eyes. Those are the eyes of a fox who is trying to find its rabbit prey. What makes me even more unsettled is the fact that the collar he is wearing looks like it is not to channel magical energy, but instead it is to contain it.
“Come on, mister, I don’t want to get myself in trouble,” said the kid while giving out an innocent smile (like I’d fall for that). “Adults are scary people.”
Gods, just please, stop making your voice like a fucking demon! It is effective to make even Art trembles, after a short bout of bravery.
“H-hey, Art, do you think you can go through that wall behind you?”
“I can’t…I can only phase through wood.”
Well, that’s kind of a bummer, isn’t it? I can’t believe this is the moment where I actually got killed…and no Segara will come to help me. Damn it, I am supposed to be the protagonist of this story, right? Why am I being the weakest one?
“Just tell me who are you,” I said, with the clearest voice I can get. Shit, a wyvern cannot let others see you scared, right? It’s hurting their so-called ‘Dragon’s Pride’.
“Why, mister, I’m just a foxy boy,” said the boy while smiling. But after a while, his smile fades, and he said, “Oh…what am I thinking? You guys are clearly not fools.”
“Who are you working with? Why are you even involved in this affair in the first place? You’re barely 8.” Nice way to talk a kid out, Hal. Keep it going. “Are you being threatened? We can help…”
In an unknowing twist of events, the child laughs. While it is considered normal, for us, it is not, for his voice is of that of an adult woman. The small body quickly transforms into something more appropriate for an adult talk.
First, his red fur slowly turned lighter before becoming white altogether. Then, aside from height and everything that signifies his transformation, the now adult person has this big bust that rival even Liza. Damn, this woman is hot! Before long, we realize that this woman also has multiple tails behind her. I can count at least nine. I might be convinced that she is not even a Discord user, but a true Mythar, but I am wrong.
“Well? This is my true form, after all,” said the vixen, smiling to me with her foxy face. “I am not a child, and I’m a female.”
“Are you…supposed to have those kinds of abilities?”
“Sadly, this is not a Mythar’s magic. I have this supernatural ability that I subconsciously named ’64 Foxes’. With it, I can shapeshift into almost anything in blinding speed, but then…it is not just for appearance.”
I don’t think it is a good idea to talk about the functions of your Discord ability, especially for an enemy like me.
“For example…”
Within a blink, she vanishes, and suddenly is behind me. Her face turns into a predator-like face, with black sclera and red eyes. I can’t even say “fuck me” before she hits the back of my head with such a force I am thrown to a nearby house, breaking through the wall. Art, on the other hand, cannot do anything and just stand there, unable to move because of fear.
“Not long my dear,” said the Mythar to the gasping Art. “I’ll be back for that tasty body of yours.”
I can say Art shudders with that comment, but right now I am in a heap of a trouble. This Mythar is clearly dangerous in both appearance and in ferocity. If I don’t do something I’ll die. Shit, Segara is the one you’re supposed to hunt, damn it! I don’t even have a Discord power.
Just when I am trying to find anything to fight her, something grab me by the throat and lift me over her. When I notice it, it is one of her tails.
“You may be thinking why you are being targeted instead of Segara of Dornthal. My boss wants you dead. Your friend there and your girlfriend is not targets, but I can’t guarantee they will get out of your current situation now without getting hurt.”
Wait, why am I also being targeted? It doesn’t make any sense. I was just a college student some days ago. I don’t get any debts with me!
“Guess I’ll take my share, then, Haelstrom Trixija.”
Just before I said, “Wait, what?” the foxy lady is hit in the head by something that looks like a pole. I see Liza behind her, panting like she was running tracks. The Mythar does not give out any reaction. She stands there for a moment before turning her head towards Liza, who quickly pull out her claws (pure dragon Mythars are known to have strong feral instincts, enough for them to fend themselves without any training) and try to attack the Mythar. But right before she is hit, the Mythar vanished, making Liza stumbles onto me. The Mythar appears behind Liza and grabs her.
“I never thought you have guts, young miss,” said the Mythar with a smile. “Don’t you think you are dating the wrong guy?”
“Hal may not be a badass, but I know he is honest! Unlike someone who is using illusions!”
“At least I am more elegant than being too masculine!”
A girl fight? Wow, this scenario is getting out of hand. Normally I would back out from it and get the hell out of there with Art, but now, incapacitated and hurt after being thrown through a wall, I can only watch their deadly stare.
“Being a furry does not always mean elegant, nor having that full bust!”
“What? Jealous of having small pairs because you are born a dragon?”
There is another staring contest before Liza steps forward, claws ready, and preparing to slap the other woman, but she is slow. The Mythar catches it, and said, “Oh, you want to fight?”
“I’m gonna Rhoda Ronsey you, bitch!”
Uh, Rhoda Ronsey? Did she meant that female mixed martial arts with deadly paws? Honestly, I like that lion, but Liza?
Before I knew it, Liza opens her wings and pull the fox Mythar out of our view, fighting in mid-air. Apparently the Mythar can levitate and they fight like there is no tomorrow. With that distraction, I grab Art and get the hell out of here.
I follow Liza’s movement, afraid that she might get hurt or hurting others. Goddamn it, this is supposed to be my fight! Why is my girlfriend ends up rescuing and fighting her for me? And why did the Mythar call me ‘Haelstrom’? Hal is not the nickname for Haelstrom.
“Art, get to the car and wait for me there. If you find anyone suspicious, run.”
I believe Art knows what he is doing. He nods and runs toward the direction where we park the car. I am preparing to fly up to help Liza when my girlfriend is falling down. I panicked for a moment before I quickly jump under where she is falling. It hurts my back a little, but at least I don’t need to worry about breaking my wings.
“Hal?! Gods, I am so sorry!”
“Never mind about me. We gotta run and find Segara!”
“No, don’t! I doubt this woman will stay alive if my father is facing her. We cannot let another person to die because of us.”
She is right, by the way, but I still can’t find anyway to convince her to find Segara. If Segara was fighting this woman, he would surely kill her, and we wouldn’t find out anything about our enemy, just like what happened before.
“This woman is lying about many details, including her sultry personality and her reason to fight. I believe she has a better motive than money,” said Liza. As I always like from her, she knows when people is lying. Her Discord power is powerful and useful.
“So do you know how to convince her to show her true self?”
“Like I said, this is not your fight. Let me talk to her. I cannot do anything to her without knowing her name first. In fact…I don’t need my Turnabout. Seeing her true heart is enough. Men cannot understand that.”
Hmm…I know she has her reasons to say that, but she is still in the middle of a fight and I know she is risking herself. If this fight is getting out of hand, we have no choice to kill this Mythar woman, against Liza’s wishes.
(By this point, multiple POVs will occur. To avoid confusion, I will give out a way to tell you who is currently talking).
