It was a balmy spring evening in the town of Ashgvanthal. The citizens had already finished their day's work and the farmers were still busy in the fields.
The young man looked out of the window of the mansion down to the streets. His thoughts kept wandering instead of what he should be interested in.
In front of him, on a large table, lay many books, one of which was open. But he was more interested in the hustle and bustle of the citizens on the streets.
For a long time he had a feeling that something in this world could not be in order. Day in and day out he could observe how people used the power of slaves for work they did not want to do themselves. The slaves had always been wolves of the wolf clan. They were omnipresent and rarely treated well.
When he got stuck on this thought, he wheeled around as his teacher and friend approached the table.
>>Are our minds elsewhere?<< he asked gently.
The young man startled and literally jumped up from the chair.
>>Sir Brannigan!<< he exclaimed euphorically and held out his hand in greeting.
>>It is good to see you. Tell me, are there any new stories to tell?<<
>>Indeed. I have many things to report. But I am more interested in what you might have to report, if you would allow me to ask.<< Brannigan asked.
The young man waved it off and elaborated:
>>Please. You know I don't like this formality.<< he said with a smile on his lips.
Sir Brannigan knew that he would react this way, but it was always a pleasure for him to hear it from himself.
>>I'm glad you're still as I left you here.<<
>>And here we are, Sir Brannigan. What I have seen here in the last few days is enough to last me a lifetime. The aristocracy exploited not only the peasants but the slaves as well.<<
At the word slaves the young man already snorted contemptuously because he hated this word so much.
He directed his gaze down to the streets and again observed the bustle of the citizens.
For a moment there was only silence in the air of the room as Sir Brannigan did not want to interrupt him in his observations.
For him, it was an important moment that would decide much of his future.
Time passed for a while until he turned around and addressed Sir Brannigan.
Expectantly he looked into the eyes of his student.
>>I am tired. But I don't know what to do. What would you advise me to do?<< he asked his teacher.
Sir Brannigan had hoped that he would ask him this question because it was really not easy for him.
So the knight took a deep breath and then spoke to his student:
>>If we want to live according to the commandments of our order then there would be only one logical choice here.<< he explained briefly because he was looking for a reaction from his student.
The boy nodded and then said conscientiously to him:
>>We would have to stand against these abuses. Otherwise we are no better than those who cause them.<<
There was something like awe in his voice coupled with a hint of remorse that died down immediately.
Still looking at his student, Sir Brannigan continued to wait.
>>All right.<< the student finally said.
>>I think it will be the only right decision. If I don't do something about it, then I am no better than those who are causing these problems. Would you agree that we leave Ashgvanthal and go on a journey?<<
Sir Brannigan smiled as it was a response he had built so much on.
>>My Prince. I am glad you have this opinion. Yes, there is much wrong and you may be the only one who can fix it. Where do you intend to travel?<< he asked excitedly.
The young man turned to the window and paused for a moment. He briefly let the impressions of the city take effect on him, and then he said firmly:
>>We will need supporters. Sympathizers, allies, whatever it takes to end all this.<<
For a moment more Brannigan paused, filled with pride at his student's perspective.
Finally, he took a breath and then spoke to his prince:
>>I have the perfect destination for us. There is someone you should meet.<<
