Red Moon: Revolution Chapter 10

"Now before you get all emotional on me," Rommel stepped out from behind the car. Banks and Adornato elected to stay where they were, away from the large man that looked like he could rip a man in half. He could. "You need to know that I didn't get Trevor for you." He put himself between the two and didn't fail to notice when Dmitri tensed up. It was dangerous getting between a male such as Dmitri and his chosen mate, but Rommel needed to set things straight before he lost control of the situation. "You weren't supposed to be here in the first place."

Dmitri didn't make a move. He wouldn't attack Rommel, he wasn't stupid, though he wouldn't be against forcibly moving him out of the way to get to Trevor. Rommel wasn't stupid either, Dmitri also knew this, so he was going to let the older wolf talk first. "I did what anyone would have if their mate was in danger."

"I understand this." Rommel nodded. "And I don't blame you for coming, but I need you to hold off on Trevor for the time being."

"Why should I do that?" Dmitri growled. "He's my mate, not yours. Why should you be in control of him?"

"And why should you?" Rommel countered and took a step forward. Dmitri took a step forward as well. The distance between them was going close quickly if the argument didn't diffuse. Rommel was hoping that logic would prevail before something did happen. "I convinced Trevor to come with me. I gave him the option to stay behind." He left out the small bit where he didn't really have much of a choice, Dmitri didn't need to know that at the moment. Rommel looked behind him at Trevor who had a worried look on his face. "If the story holds true, he left you when you gave him a similar choice two years ago."

"That was then." Dmitri said and took one more step forward. He was easily within lunging distance to move the old man out of the way. He wouldn't attack to harm, but he would get to Trevor. "This is now." He looked at Trevor and reached out a hand. "I don't know what exactly Rommel has planned for you, but you don't have to follow him. Come with me."

Trevor looked between the two who watched him. Rommel had a soft, but commanding face on, one that Trevor imagined that he wore back in World War 2 when he led Germany's armies across North Africa. Dmitri looked desperate, not very different from the face he had when Trevor did leave him behind, all that time ago in Russia. He remembered how he turned away from the man, breaking him with a single gesture. He had no idea that he had actually meant that much to him.

"I won't stop you Trevor." Rommel said. "If you go with him, I won't stop you, but I can't guarantee anything with him."

"Don't worry." Dmitri said, glaring at Rommel. "I don't plan on running off like some fanciful fairy tale. I fully intend on continuing the fight against the Inquisition, but I won't let you use Trevor as a weapon."

"He's the most powerful asset we have." Rommel recalled the accounts of how large Trevor was, a savage, beast of a werewolf that sported an autumn red coat and the ability to heal faster than any other wolf. He, if controlled properly, would be a powerful tool that would spell the end to the Inquisition, and most importantly, The Coordinator. "If you take him and shelter him, you risk the war effort."

"You still live in the old days." The large man sneered. "This isn't the old war anymore. There's no need for super weapons and I doubt Trevor wants to be used like that."

"No." The two men stopped and looked at Trevor who stepped past Rommel who stepped out of the way to give him room. "I don't want to be used."

"See." Dmitri said with a smug grin. "Trevor..."

Trevor raised a trembling hand. His heart was beating heavily in his chest and he was sweating. He took a deep breath to calm himself. He was used to being confrontational and simply being around a confrontation got his blood pumping, stopping the two arguing werewolves was quite the trip, but he needed to say something. "I don't want to be used, not by you." He looked at Rommel who looked at him back. "Nor you." He then looked at Dmitri, whose grin faded, his lips turning to thin lines. "If I'm going to do anything, It's going to be because I want to."

"And what do you want?" Dmitri said, genuinely concerned about what was going to be said.

"This whole mess, this fucking mess." He clenched his fist. "Drug me out of my home and now I'm going to be used as some weapon because of something that I can't even remember." He gave a hysterical chuckle. It was a lot to handle before, but now that he was recanting it all, it was almost too much for him to handle, though he held on. "All I know is that I want my life back and if that means running off to Germany or wherever, then fine, but I choose to do so." He sighed and rubbed his fingers through his hair.

Rommel stood up straight and loosened his collar slightly. "Okay then." He rolled his shoulders. He was getting old, just tensing up like that, facing Dmitri had made him sore. "I can work with that."

"So can I." Dmitri relaxed.

"Good." Trevor clasped his hands together. It went better than he thought. He had never done anything like that, taking control, even just for a little. It was rather exhilarating, as much as it made him feel like he was going to soil himself. "Now let's go. It's getting dark." He turned to Rommel. "What's the plan to get out of here."

"Before the airport became the center of the world's attention." He gave a quick look at Dmitri, not looking at him directly, but flashing a look to let the wolf know that he was partially responsible. "I was simply planning on flying out, but that's obviously not an option."

"Portland isn't far." Trevor said. "It's a bit of a drive, but it's still something.

"I don't think flying is an option." Banks spoke up from the car that he and Adornato had been hiding behind. They had waited for the three to finish their little reunion first before saying anything since that seemed like the smartest thing to do. Now that there didn't seem to be any threat of violence, the man felt comfortable to lend his knowledge. "After an event like this, Inquisition agents planted in the TSA will be watching all airports."

"I see." Rommel held his chin between his thumb and index finger, stroking the stubble that had sprouted there over the course of the day. Unlike many other werewolves in their human form, Rommel wasn't particularly hairy. He was very average and it took several days for him to grow any noticeable amount of facial hair, versus the single day that he was sure it took Dmitri. He could already see a five o'clock shadow on his face as well as Trevor. "Then, we'll have to find a different route."

"If we're going to need to get to Germany..." Adornato added his own two cents. "Then by ship is really the only option. He ducked into the car and pulled out the laptop that he had brought along with him from the house. He opened it up and quickly scrolled through several menus. The others quickly gathered around him as he set the laptop on the hood of the car. "Airports are going to be watched closely, but ports are much harder to watch since the traffic isn't as concentrated."

"Who are you?" Dmitri asked him and stared down the man who shrunk under his gaze.

"They're with me." Rommel said. "I picked them up along the way. You have nothing to worry about them." Dmitri snorted and looked back at the laptop.

Adornato collected himself and continued, but not without wary glances towards Dmitri. "Other than here in Seattle, for obvious reasons, any port will do as long as it has some sort of passenger ship heading to Europe."

"It's going to take time." Dmitri hummed. "But if that's the only way..." He looked down at Trevor who was focused on the screen. "I guess it will have to do."

"I can work on getting tickets." Banks said. "I don't think the Inquisition realizes that we've gone and I should be able to pull some strings."

"You can just tell them we're trying to get out since we can't perform our duties anymore." Adornato added and Banks nodded and turned to the group.

"We should find a place to stay for the night. I should have something by the morning."

The motel wasn't large, but it was cheap and the owner accept cash without question. The middle aged woman with a floral printed shirt behind the counter simply looked at them, blew a puff of cheap cigarette smoke and gave them two room keys once they handed over the money. She had been working the motel business to not even bat an eye at the group.

The group split between the rooms. The two old Inquisition agents had their room and the werewolves went to their own.

"You're not concerned that they may turn on us?" Dmitri said as he sat down on the bed that groaned under his weight. He wrinkled his nose at the musty scent of the room. He could smell every person who had ever used the space and their nightly activities. He would take a shower in the morning, preferably with Trevor, who sat on the other side of the room. It was intoxicating being near him. His scent which had been taken from him for so long, filled his head every second and it had taken a miraculous strength of will to not rip his clothes off when they were pressed up against each other in the car. He wanted him so much, but he also wanted to respect his wishes and personal space. He was a stranger to Trevor, but Dmitri hoped to change that with time.

"I doubt it." Rommel said as threw his single duffel back onto the other bed. "They've had plenty of opportunities to call for help and they haven't" He unzipped the bag and pulled out a small travel pouch that had his toothbrush in it. "Plus, they wouldn't risk their lives like that. The Inquisition doesn't mean that much to them."

"Just keep an eye on them." Dmitri warned. "If anything happens that would put Trevor in danger..." He let the words hang. They both knew that they would have to kill them if it ever became apparent that they had been betrayed. Trevor was just as important to Rommel as he was to Dmitri, even if it was for different reasons.

"Don't worry, I'm watching them." Rommel smiled and grabbed the bag and went into the restroom where he closed the door, leaving the Dmitri alone with Trevor for the time being.

It was silent at first, an awkward silence as neither of them really knew what to say.

Trevor was trying to sort things out in his mind. He felt a strange attraction to this man, Dmitri, a warm safe feeling. In the car, he had sat in the back of the car, right next to Dmitri. He had done it without thinking, simply slipping in right next to him as if it was just meant to be that way and he didn't realize what he had done until well after the car was started off and they were on the highway. He sat there in silence, their bodies pressed against each other, crammed into the too small back seat of the car that was struggling to carry them all. He could feel the heat radiating off the man. He remembered the werewolves had a higher body temperature that human, much warmer. His doctor had always tried to get him to take medication since he always thought that he had a flu. Then there was the scent.

Years without practice or much use had stunted Trevor's nose, but in the small confine of the car, it was impossible not to inhale it with every breath. It stirred something in his head. It brought something up, or rather, tried to. The smell was so familiar and suddenly Trevor didn't care that he remembered nothing about Dmitri.

Now that he wasn't so close and could think again, he was trying to figure out why he felt so strange around Dmitri. He tried to call on memories that were not there.

"Will you give me a chance?" Dmitri said suddenly, twisting the edge of the blanket in his hands.

"What?" Trevor looked up. He had been staring at the shag carpet that was in desperate need of a deep cleaning.

"Will you give me a chance to start things up again?" Dmitri didn't know how else to ask. "I know that you can live without me, but it's so hard for me. Will you let me be... be your friend." He reserved the word mate for the time being. He didn't want to go too strong and scare him off.

"I..." Trevor thought about it. He was going to be with Dmitri a lot in the near future. It didn't take a genius to see that. He doubted that he would be able to get rid of Dmitri, even if he were to entirely shut him out of his life. He doubted that he would be able to do that to him anyways, there was already something in his pulling him towards him. An old part of him, the part that he had lost in Russia was still there somewhere. "I guess?"

It was close enough for Dmitri. He immediately stood up and seated himself in the chair next to Trevor.

They just sat there in silence, but unlike a few moment earlier, it wasn't so awkward. To Trevor, having Dmitri so close, it made him feel safe, it made him forget that he was once again leaving an old life behind.

To Dmitri, it was a start.
